A little break from requests—my mutual @vinnystaysawake is REALLY stoked about the recent Pokémon leaks and it got us talking about his and his friends’ Pokémon ship. I promptly turned into a Wings of Fire AU. He insisted that I post it. I’m not set on Kynthos as Cynthia’s name, so if anyone has any suggestions, throw em in the comments!

5012 AS: Post-War Pyrrhia AU Part 1/2

The year begun with plenty of euphoria and anxiety, from the sand palace, Burn had sent an invitation to all queendoms to come to the palace participate of her new holiday, the “Victory Day”, a large scale military parade of SandWings, SkyWings and MudWings.

The event was a showcase of Burn’s now professional standing army, which scared both queens Glacier and Tsunami, both queendoms had been enemies of Burn in the war, and saw what her poorly equipped army could do, now they were equipping. A new standard armor design, copied from the SkyWings, was light yet offered considerable protection towards piercing projectiles and weapons.

Despite Scarlet forbidding such design copies, preferring to export armors to Burn, in order to secretly keep her at bay, in the military business, Burn seemed a manipulative mastermind as much as Blister was personality wise, secretly reverse-engineering the armor to suit her own forces.

The event also demonstrated high coordination and communication between the branching flights, another thing Burn’s army had lacked through the war, acting more like a horde than a proper military force, which had granted her enemies the ability to counter her large-scale offensives.

Although the military parade caused concern, it was if anything, for deterrence. The Sand Queendom was the second most affected place in the war after the Mud Queendom, not Burn nor her allies were in any shape to launch a sweeping strike against their former enemies, and most correctly concluded Burn was satisfied with only putting the show to avoid war at any cost.

In fact, things would complicate further more to her side, for trouble sparked in the Sky Queendom.

Queen Ruby of the SkyWings had brought her most loyal soldiers to perform at the parade, while leaving the bulk of her army at her queendom. Most had questioned why the SkyWings, with the largest army of Pyrrhia, had the smallest presence at the parade, and the truth was, Ruby had no control over most of her army.

Since the murder of Scarlet, the SkyWing army had acted as its own entity, somewhat responding to Burn but not to Queen Ruby, whom they saw as weak and a puppet of Burn. During the late phase of the war, it had launched its own operations without Ruby’s approval nor consent of what happened, which later would cause the mass execution of prisoners at the Summer Palace, an event that still would stain the relations between both queendoms for decades to come.

The cabal of SkyWing generals who led the army, under an unknown, but presumably collective leadership, had disregard Ruby’s every orders to almost ludicrous lengths. Had Ruby told them to take a shower, they wouldn’t. In a more serious tone, Ruby had abolished martial law and Scarlet’s infamous breeding program, yet through most of her territory outside of the palace, the SkyWing army kept business as usual.

The war parade would be the tipping point, in its aftermath, the SkyWing army launched a coup against Ruby. Although their goals were conflicting in the early phase of the Skyfire Revolution, with some wanting to merely put Ruby under house arrest, others wanted to simply end the alliance with Burn, while a minor group even wanted to depose Ruby and install prince Cliff as an easily controllable heir to the throne.

The lack of coordination of the SkyWing generals would prove their main weakness, as several soldiers’ flights opposed the coup, and under one month, the territories the generals controlled was impossible to even say, but they believed it was most of the queendom.

Queen Ruby, returned to the queendom, and mobilized her most loyal to face this overwhelming threat, also calling aid from her allies. Within a week, SandWings and MudWings flooded the Sky Queendom and battle after battle defeated the cabal of generals. Not even full 8 months after the end of the Great War, war had sparked again in Pyrrhia.

While seemingly against overwhelming odds, the SkyWing generals had a veteran army on their side, as well as many under civilian roles that were indeed angered with Ruby’s rule, had they for so long enjoyed lavish army bonuses from Ex-Queen Scarlet, who above all, knew a satisfied military was a docile one. A reality Ruby had refused as the war ended, drastically reducing the military spending, demobilizing thousands of dragons who had returned to impoverished or destroyed fields of their families, quite often to nobody left at their sacked homes.

The civil war happened too around the same time the DoD were teaching and administrating the Jade Academy, which was located in the Sky Queendom, which for a short while became a conflict zone until Burn and Moorhen’s armies arrived to protect it, with Tsunami also sending a whole battle group to protect her friends, and Peril was there too as a deterrent to any further attacks.

For the duration of the Skyfire Revolution, the Jade Academy became the most well defended building in all of Pyrrhia, an unfortunate but understandable situation according to Sunny.

By the end of 5012 AS, the revolution was completely destroyed, its members scattered across the queendom and in the underworld of Possibility, while the cabal of generals were captured and Ruby, at an ultimate act of mercy, merely threw them at the dungeons for life.

The end of the conflict was also most fortunate for Burn, who a day after the hatching of her dragonet, had several terrorist bombings through her queendom, a terror tactic later revealed to be work of Vulture and Blister, now working together to bring Burn down.

In what could be considered the shortest demobilized time in history, Burn had again mobilized her force to hunt down for Blister and Vulture, but the shadowy SandWing had made several assassination attempts to all the royal family, from Burn, to Sandstorm, to Smolder, Scald, Singe, to even Blaze, though all failed thanks Burn’s quick military mobilization, the message was clear, this new war in the Sand Queendom could not simply be solved by an overwhelming strike at a certain place, for Vulture had hideouts and smuggling bases through all the desert and beyond.

Rumors of a potential cooperation between Vulture (a fan of the IceWing model) and Glacier had sparked a major outrage from Burn at an international scale. Although Glacier was innocent, she promised an investigation to be conducted from the first circle down to the last for any collaborators with the terrorist strikes. Of course, such investigations of royal on royal led to absolute nothing and everyone declared innocent.

The truth would later be revealed that Glacier was fully aware of princess’ Tundra and her daughter Icicle’s dealings with Vulture, and Glacier simply had closed her eyes to the whole deal and pretended it didn’t happen.

Glacier was very afraid of Burn, she and her allies may not be strong at the moment, but once they recovered, she feared Burn would resume the war to this time end on her own terms, disregarding the peace the DoD had negotiated. The SeaWings had not been afraid of Burn going underwater somehow, but the IceWings were.

In an ultimate twist of fate, Glacier was now collaborating with Blister, her former enemy. Although she would have preferred to put Blaze on the throne, for she was easily controllable, Blister’s recent attempts even to Blaze’s life had showed Glacier that her picked the wrong friends, but now turning back would risk one final angering of the IceWing upper circles, just the trigger they would need to overthrow her, like the SkyWings tried with Ruby.

It has been only 18 months since the end of the Great War, yet is Pyrrhia inevitably walking towards conflict once again?

I’m the anon that sent in all the Ruby stuff! It makes me so happy that you love her so much. I didn’t expect her to be such a beloved character to you and I was kind of nervous that you would have hated her tbh. ^^;

Something Ruby related — I had a fic about Twig and co. confronting the siblings before I ultimately scrapped it because I could not write villainous characters without making them feel cliché. I do remember this one line said by Ruby’s sister when she lashes out towards Twig:

“You wouldn’t get it. You have a cushy life style and you baby your daughter instead of actually raising her. We’re doing that ungrateful, spoiled brat a favor — we’re teaching her how to survive. You wouldn’t know the meaning of that with that silver spoon in your mouth.”

I don’t blame you for struggling with not making the siblings feel cliché— writing villainous characters gets 900x more difficult the second you don’t want to make them sympathetic. Ark was fairly simple for me to write, even in scrapped scenes where he was all-in with his villainous role during the events of the post-game. Twig’s aunt, meanwhile, gave me a heck of a hard time while I was developing her backstory.

Chapter Nine: Red Rum, Red Hands

Oh, he’s spotted it,” said Blaise from behind her, his voice giddy with anticipation.

“Who?” asked Parvati.

There was no answer, because Harry and Cedric both seemed to dive in unison, robes snapping in the wind after what must be the Snitch near the ground, far too small to see.

“Now, the technique Potter’s using’s called a Spiral Dive—” Blaise began.

“Shhh,” said Parvati, almost dangling over the railing. “They’re so close!”

The two Seekers were neck and neck, hands outstretched, pressing themselves flatter against their brooms—

Then they both pulled up. Hard. The Snitch must have slipped away.

“Well, wasn’t that hair-raising?” called Lee, and the stadium cheered in approval. “It’s still anyone’s game, sixty to eighty, Gryffindor to Hufflepuff — but Johnson’s currently doing her best to make that score even.”

The tension in Harry’s shoulders as he rose was clear even from far away. The Gryffindor stands yelled encouragement, but he seemed indifferent, unhearing as he watched the swarming chaos of red and yellow below. Cedric looked similarly contemplative.

And then, it happened.

Cedric dove.

“Diggory spotted the Snitch!” called Lee. “With Potter in pursuit — no, where’s Potter, why’s he just sitting there? Earth to Potter!”

“Why isn’t he following?” asked Parvati, the wind from Cedric plummeting blowing her hair back from her face.

She was right; Harry was just sitting there, casual as you please.

What if something’s wrong?

“Wronski Feint,” Blaise supplied. “At least, that’s what Diggory’s attempting. But Harry knows there’s nothing down there.”

Indeed, Harry’s face was tilted towards the sky, scanning the clouds with a tense, quiet determination.

Is that really what he’s doing?
