i believe something that both benson and randy have in common, that allows them both to work a job where they have to deal with customers, is a very passable friendly normal veneer that holds up well enough for chit chat or passing small talk with family friends or taking orders from unassuming strangers. but it’s like one of those optical illusions that starts to come apart when you stare for too long. most people only have a conversation or two with them, to most people, they are perfunctory pleasant people. any more time than that and it very quickly caves. there’s some great unknowable thing about them that says they’re weird, subconsciously distinct people find off-putting or pitiable. something that, even when overlooked, only becomes unmistakable with time, we see it in benson’s ma & lisa. i think it just pulls randy’s mom closer, the unshakable notion that her son is wrong, that she’d made him that way, drives her to hysterics constantly. there’s still people who aren’t rebuffed, probably hailey, miss beard and her daughter, just takes a certain type of person.

but itd work well on the road togther i think. itd pull them together perpetually like two magnets :)

we get to see benson pull this off, but randy doesn’t really get a chance to really display this because he’s either around people he already knows or is incredibly tense and petrified that he’s gonna say something wrong & benson’s gonna kill them. very much not in his element. probably not crazy far off but. definitely not the very best and normalist of Randy Bradley that particular day. we make do

ever since mark started reintegrating, i've been thinking about reintegration as just another form of violence against innies.

like. if we accept that an innie is a person with personhood and rights independent of their outie, then reintegration absolutely must be mutually consensual. reintegration doesn't just "give" one person "their memories" back - it merges two distinct people into one. the end of the distinction between them is the end of "mark s" and "mark scout" as individuals. we've recently mourned the retirement of several innies, but there's always a chance, however remote, that they could reawaken. reitegration, however, is most likely truly irreversible. this is what the death of an innie looks like.

and if you actually stop and think about it, being subsumed into someone else's identity and consciousness is violation on a nightmarish scale, worse than the severed floor itself. even more so when you consider the pain, the disorientation, the risk of punishment at the hands of lumon and the risk of physical death involved.

but for the vast majority of severed people, it can't be mutually consensual. because there is no way to communicate with your other half besides reintegration. so only the outie can make the decision to reintegrate. which makes it seem less like healing a wound or making something broken whole again and more like the stronger of two siblings killing and eating the weaker.

no choice in their own creation. no choice in their own destruction. no knowledge that it's even happening while it happens. mark s trembles and bleeds and hallucinates and feels his selfhood blurring at the edges and he doesn't even know why. he doesn't know that this is the end.

perhaps the outies and the unsevered people think reintegration means giving innies a life outside lumon, but the innies don't get to live outside lumon as themselves. they get to die and be remade into something new. is that freedom? really? or is it just another form of exploitation?
