What happens in the bylines au?
OK OK SO
(preface: i don't know much about japanese journalism so a lot of this is gonna be framed through the lens of american journalism)
The background: during World War III, a lot of war crimes were exposed by journalists deep undercover in the military in order to circumvent increasing post-Vietnam restrictions on the movements of war correspondents. This resulted in an international wave of deep-undercover journalism, widening the scope of press tactics considered acceptable so that, in this universe, undercover reporters might have the responsibilities and training similar to an undercover government agent or police officer
Enter the investigative unit of The Asahi Shimbun. Reporters on this unit have their stories published under the same anonymous byline, and their identities aren't made public. (This is NOT how things work in real life, to be clear. I'm just pulling Asahi because they're Japan's most prestigious paper.) They have a general practice of always having a reporter undercover in the Japanese government. So they put rookie reporter Matsuda into the NPA — it's easy to do so with his dad's connections. They also plant one of the assistant editors, Ide. Their job is mostly to track down sources and notify other reporters of stories covered up by the Japanese police, not do their own reporting. But then the Kira case happens, and the Japanese police start chasing Kira with a skeleton crew. Matsuda stays on the Kira task force, and Ide leaves so he can keep an eye on the Kira investigation from the outside.
As they learn more and more about Kira, particularly that he needs a name and face, they're forced to grapple with issues of news ethics. How do you balance the public's right to know with the fact that you're putting a crosshairs on the people you name? When the Japanese police stops chasing Kira altogether, should they hold them accountable by running a story on that, or will doing so just put the task force at risk? If I ever wrote this into a full fic, I think it would be a really cool opportunity to discuss how news ethics and practices would change in the Death Note universe. For instance, a journalist should always put their name to what they do — that would probably change.
Takada is a TV journalist who tries to stay neutral, just reporting on the impact of Kira's killings. But she's torn. She sees firsthand both the fall in crime as a result of Kira and the grief his victims leave behind. She gets in contact with more pro-Kira circles and starts going undercover within them. In the end, she starts pretending to be pro-Kira while being determined to catch Kira if the cops won't. Imagine her surprise when Kira contacts her. With his name attached. And it's her ex.
But her word alone isn't enough. Not for a story like this, and she can't do this reporting by herself. So she gets in contact with two papers she knows have plants in Kira investigations: Asahi Shimbun and the Washington Post.
Gevanni is a photojournalist undercover in the FBI investigating corruption when he gets recruited to the SPK. Takada gets in contact with him and Matsuda.
Matsuda doesn't believe her at first. So of course he joins her. If something needs to be proven wrong, he wants to investigate.
I don't really have a concrete idea of what the plot would look like — that's the overall premise. Some more tidbits:
-Matsuda is trans, and him and Gevanni met in college when he was pre-transition. So he knows who Gevanni is when they meet, but Gevanni doesn't recognize him
-Matsuda and Ide are using aliases, I just refer to them by those aliases for clarity. So when Misa gets the shinigami eyes again, she and Light soon realize Matsuda isn't all he seems. Takada isn't using an alias, because she didn't start her career intending to do investigations. Gevanni also isn't, because that would require a fake ID, which is illegal, and he's a stickler for the SPJ code of ethics.
-as an irl journalist i dont condone ANY of this
-Does L know? Who knows. Probably about Matsuda, but not Ide. Depends on how much of a background check he does
-gevanni only uses pittman ruled notebooks and writes in shorthand. if he has to use gregg he will cry. he and i have that in common
-matsuda and gevanni kiss

New video! In this segment of my book interview with Paolo "GameDiviner" Munoz, we discussed why GamerGate was important to him, media ethics, EzraKlein's JournoList, harassment, the GG Harassment & Hug Patrols, and his famous "Line in the Sand" speech ahead of SPJ Airplay.
GameDiviner's Line in the Sand speech: “I think what's gonna happen between here and one more month, it's really all we have left. I think the intensity is going to get higher in trying to derail this. We're gonna have to keep it under as best as we can. And I think what's going to happen between here and one more month it's really all we have left I think I think the intensity is going to get higher in trying to derail this we're gonna have to keep it under as best as we can and I think that's part of the reason why we've had all these interesting weird debates going on that are kind of artificial on the tag people are sensing especially in anti GamerGate that if Airplay does go through and we are heard and the truth starts coming out. They are in serious trouble, so I think every single effort is being made between now and the next month to get us disheartened, to get us to give up, to get us to think that this is all for nothing, to get us to fight each other, to get us into pointless dramas on the freaking hashtag over how to use it.
I mean, for goodness sake, we've been at this for 11 months and we're debating over this stupid shit that from month one was already out there; we've been arguing about this since month one. No matter what happens next, we're all friends. We all know each other, we know the people we can rely on, we know the people we can trust, and we know that we can build something better from this. We're connecting with the industry in more ways than we can imagine now.
We're not on trial; their entire damn profession is on trial, and we're bringing the evidence to prove it. We're not on trial—they are. We're going to make it better. We're going to prove to the world that this is probably one of the most progressive, most open, most incredible and creative fields there is out there. We're going to break the media lie that the entire industry is made out of show business and sex. They're not just hurting us as gamers; they're hurting developers. They're hurting the people who want to get in as developers because they're spreading lies. We're going to break that here and now. We just have to show up and speak the truth. The truth does not need defending; you just need to let it free. It will defend itself like a lion.”

This is what happened to me this week
This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences, filled with both challenges and moments of joy. From Monday to Friday, the days seemed to blend together in a whirlwind of activities and responsibilities. Schoolwork consumed a significant portion of my time. I dedicated long hours to studying, completing assignments, and preparing for exams for upcoming Monday. The workload felt overwhelming at times, but I pushed through, seeking support from classmates and teachers. Last Thursday I attend for the events of School in Spj for Mathematics and Science month Im so happy because Many games and this is the to interact to other and this is a chance to bonding with my classmate. Last Friday I went to Goa to fulfill my requirements for my scholarship And to meet my former classmate in Senior high school I'm so happy that time because we sharing stories, laughter, and offering each other encouragement. Their presence provided a much-needed break from the stresses of the week. I Attending mass in Sunday morning brought me a sense of spiritual grounding. The tranquil atmosphere and the messages of faith provided moments of reflection and inspiration. It was a time to find peace amidst the chaos.
Throughout the week, I also cherished moments with my family. We gathered for meals, engaging in conversations that deepened our connection. We laughed, shared stories, and supported each other through the ups and downs of life. Their love and presence served as a constant source of comfort. As the week comes to an end, I reflect on the challenges overcome and the small victories achieved. It was a week of growth, resilience, and the importance of human connections. I look forward to the weekend, where I can recharge and create more cherished memories with loved ones.

Research and Investigative Skills Development Course
In the Research and Investigation Skills course at full Sail University, I had learned multiple skills as an upcoming journalist. I had learned multiple tools I could use in my genres of writing pertaining to higher education. I had obtained Public Records resources that could assist with my current and future data and publications.
The Finding & Using Public Records Tutorial was a source I enjoyed because it provided me access to more online tools for research. I will utilize the SPJ Toolbox and the FEC website to gain political and current media information.
Also, I felt there were writing templates to assist with story ideas and the expectations needed for articles I will produce for my brand.  As I write, it is important to be mindful of current trends and topics to discuss.  In addition, I should seek potential experts in higher education or surrounding higher education to interview.  What I liked about week 3 was the types and approaches of different interviews. It was interesting to evaluate multiple interviews and recognize effective and noneffective strategies to gain information and be mindful of being biased. The Finding Interviewees was very informative and helped with my goals as well as reassured some of my tactics with emailing questions to some experts in the field.
As I continue to research and connect with experts in the field, I realize I will be recognized more as a serious journalist especially if my writing is valid and has purpose.  So, networking and being well-read in these topics of higher education are important.
Moreover, I am conscious of creating multimedia aspects in my published articles. So, it is important to become more familiar with as well as master graphic design elements in Adobe Design, Visio, and Canva. Because this is not my background, I felt I had trouble with designing some infographics.
Reviewing more articles that have multimedia aspects will help with understanding the expectations and the design appeal to audiences.  Although I did not create videos and photographs for this class, I should be prepared to master these skills as well. Again, it would be important to be conscious of news segments that have photos and videos that I can reference or feel inspiration.

Most Common Freezer Problems (and How to Fix Them)
Hello Households,
Let’s make these common freezer problems solve with SPJ Electronics today!
Strange Noise - Sometimes you hear a sizzling sound which is normal. But if you notice a constant noise, you should check if your evaporator fan motor is fine. You must know this your freezer has a fan motor at the back, which circulates air through the evaporator coil. Although it has a long life cycle of over 8 -10 years, sometimes it is unable to rotate properly and makes noise.
Frost Buildup - Heavy frost forming may need a replacement in the freezer but not every time. It will help if you noticed few things to judge right. If the frost forming is around the freezer gasket, this generally tells us that the freezer door was not properly shut.
Also, you need to make sure that your freezer temperature is according to the ideal temperature for freezing, i.e., 0°F (-18°C) and around 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator. Do not avoid defrosting if you face heavy frost building, and it may take 2-3 cycles to defrost it properly.
Ligh indicators - If it is a green light indicator in your freezer, it means it is connected to the mains, and you don’t need to worry. If it is indicating red, then this is a warning of high temperature, and if no light is there, this means there is an issue. Sometimes indicator light stops working due to broken wires, it needs to get checked with the help of an expert.
If you are facing the above problems, here we go, but wait, if not, you might get it later! Let us know, SPJ Electronics will help you solve even your small problems

‘A total lie’: Mexican engineers say they were misled into manual labor in Ga. factories
Among the belongings Luis, a mechanical engineer by training, packed for his trip from Mexico to Atlanta was a business suit.
He had just accepted a quality engineering role based in West Point, Georgia.
But things began falling apart almost as soon as he landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, on a cold night in December 2020. A man sent by Luis’ new employer greeted him with a strange revelation: the engineering job he had been hired to do – and which he uprooted his life in Mexico to take – did not exist.
For the next 11 months, Luis would put in 12-hour shifts on the factory floor of a Georgia auto parts manufacturer, where he carried heavy loads to keep the assembly line fed. The nature of the work — which involved lugging parts such as bumpers or transmissions weighing over 100 pounds — put strain on his back, his hands, his feet.
Luis is one of six Mexican nationals who told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution they were brought to the U.S. under false pretenses, with engineering job offers from a staffing agency proving to be smoke screens for low paid assembly-line work. The men provided documents showing a little-known visa program that immigrant watchdogs say is ripe for abuse paved the way for the agency to bring them to Georgia.
“For me, it was just surreal,” Luis said. “I kept asking myself, ‘Am I dreaming?’ Like, what is happening? What is going on?”
The visa that allowed Luis and others into the country is the Trade NAFTA —or TN — visa, meant to fill high-skilled jobs in the U.S. with Mexican professionals. According to a list published by the U.S. Department of State, jobs as engineers and technicians are among the professions covered by the TN visa program. Assembly line work is not.
With little oversight of the TN visa program, some immigrant advocates report a growing pattern of fraud resulting in worker exploitation, with many cases linked to the auto sector in the Southeast.
The company that hired the Mexican nationals and that supported their applications for TN visas is a Newnan staffing agency, GB2G, Inc. also known as Allswell. Workers say Allswell hired them to work for several different auto parts manufacturers in the West Point area that supply the Kia auto plant there.
Allswell hasn’t been charged with any wrongdoing in connection to its use of the TN visa program.
During Luis’ first night in the state, he says the housing he’d been promised by Allswell turned out to be a spot on the floor in a house shared with seven other TN workers.
“I laid there and obviously I couldn’t sleep, out of frustration,” he said. “I was thinking, ‘The only thing left would be for them to take us to the cotton fields tomorrow.’”
A rising trend
The six Mexican nationals interviewed by the AJC arrived between December 2020 and May 2021. During that stretch, a worsening pandemic left jobs unfilled and set the stage for a surging labor movement — conditions that made low-wage jobs harder and harder to fill with U.S. workers.
“It’s a huge moment” in the economy, said executive director of the Sur Legal Collaborative, an immigrant and workers’ rights non-profit based in Atlanta. “And so employers are going to look elsewhere for a labor force that is going to be more compliant … especially in some of these industries where there’s high turnover.”
Staff at the Centro de los Derechos del Migrante (CDM), a migrant workers organization that operates in Mexico and the U.S., say allegations of TN visa fraud of the kind coming out of the West Point auto sector are not unusual.
“It’s definitely notable to us that it’s going on in an industry that has such a high level of visibility in that region and has sort of been held up as this model for rural economic development,” said CDM’s legal director. “When you think about the shiny cars rolling off the assembly line … it’s not something that’s on people’s radar, that the industry is sourcing its parts from producers who appear to be engaging in practices that are highly concerning and in many cases unlawful.”
In April, a class action lawsuit filed in Atlanta federal court claimed a Gwinnett-based labor recruiter used the TN visa program to hire dozens of Mexican engineers, who said they wound up performing manual labor in a facility based in Luverne, Alabama. The lead plaintiff in the case is Jaime Obregon Acosta, a Mexican national who holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in business administration. While on the job, Obregon and others “had to work horrendously long hours on the production line at hourly wages that were a fraction” of that of U.S. citizens. Over 40 hired through the visa program have joined the suit.
A civil rights litigator who is representing Obregon and his colleagues, said he is coming across cases of visa misclassification “over and over again,” where companies’ aim is to lower labor costs.
For the Allswell employees interviewed by the AJC, the prospect of an engineering job north of the border felt validating, a sign that years of study and resume-building in Mexico had earned them a legal shot at the American dream. When they realized their new jobs were not what they expected, the men said they hung on for several months, clocking in at the Georgia factories because they needed to make money somehow.
Some of the workers said they were too ashamed to go back to Mexico and face their families as victims of what they perceived to be demeaning treatment.
“They treated us like we were animals,” Luis said. “Like pack mules.”
“It was a total lie,” Augusto, another engineer, said of the job offer that got him his visa. “They’re making the U.S. government believe that they are bringing in qualified personnel for a professional job, but it’s a lie.”
An immigration attorney said the Mexican engineers’ descriptions and their experience in Georgia could amount to human trafficking. In fact one of the engineers has applied for protection under human trafficking laws.
Because the auto parts manufacturers didn’t directly employ the Mexican nationals, relying instead on a third-party staffing firm, they might not be responsible if a violation of the TN visa program were found.
“One reason that employers in all industries use these third-party staffing agencies is in part to shield themselves from liability and compliance costs” said an associate professor at Georgia State University’s College of Law.
The Mexican engineers who spoke to the AJC provided documentation to show they worked at three parts makers that supply automaker Kia in West Point. On its website, staffing agency Allswell lists the three— Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Glovis and Mando — as part of its client roster. All are South Korean auto parts manufacturers with facilities in the West Point area.
Mobis and Mando didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment.
Limited oversight of a visa program
Because of the limited eligibility requirements, the TN visa program accounts for only a small number of foreign workers especially relative to other, more popular types of employment visas.
In fiscal year 2021, the U.S. issued 24,904 TN visas, up from 16,119 just four years prior – a more than 50% increase, according to federal data. Of the total number of visas issued to TN workers and their dependents in 2021, the latest year for which data is available, Mexico accounted for an overwhelming 98.8%.
Labor protections such as enforcing work contracts, ordering employers to pay back wages and referring cases for prosecution as the need arises don’t exist for TN workers.
“I mean, the workers come here and there’s just no reporting, no oversight.... And I think that’s part of the reason why it’s attractive to some employers,” said a civil rights attorney.
Because a TN visa is tied to the workers’ employer who helps them obtain the visa, quitting to take a better job in the U.S. can be difficult, leaving workers stuck.
The State Department operates the TN program for Mexican applicants.
It’s unknown how many TN visas have been issued to Georgia workers. The State Department told the AJC that it does not collect or publish data on TN visas broken down by destination state or employer.
Another Case
In the fall of 2020, Heber Zapata, came across a LinkedIn job posting that caught his eye. A Georgia labor recruitment agency called SPJ Connect was looking to fill U.S.-based engineering roles.
But the promising job Zapata moved nearly 2,000 miles to take was nothing like it had been described, he said. Nearly two years later, the 28-year-old is still in LaGrange, hoping the U.S. government will declare him a victim of human trafficking.
Zapata’s experience during the job recruitment process was echoed by other workers, all of whom secured their visas to work in Georgia through SPJ Connect.
According to Zapata, Spanish-speaking SPJ Connect staff set him up on a job interview with the Newnan staffing agency Allswell. In an email to another Mexican job seeker, an SPJ Connect employee wrote that Allswell was a “company that provides [labor] outsourcing services to other businesses that are located in Georgia and that are looking for production engineers, maintenance engineers and internal logistics engineers.”
In short order, Zapata was offered a $44,000 salary as a “production engineer,” and a package of benefits. To support his application for a TN visa, Allswell sent Zapata a letter stating he had been offered a job that was “professional and specialized in nature.”
With his education and multiple years of experience, the letter stated Zapata had “the required knowledge and sophistication that would enable him to comprehend complex engineering concepts and scientific theoretical principles.”
The AJC reviewed six TN visa support letters provided by the Mexican nationals who were recruited by SPJ Connect and hired by Allswell to work at auto parts manufacturers in West Point. The letters show five of the men were hired to work at the Hyundai Mobis plant and one at the Mando plant. Salaries they were offered ranged from $40,000 to $44,000 a year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once in Georgia, Zapata says the nature of the work he was asked to do didn’t match what was described on his visa.
Zapata’s job turned out to be working the overnight shift — 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. — on the assembly line at the Hyundai Mobis plant, a Kia supplier located in West Point.
Pay also fell short of the $44,000 he had been promised: His paychecks show Zapata earned roughly $580 a week, which amounts to just over $30,000 a year. According to Zapata, American workers at the same plant performing similar work earned an hourly wage higher than his $11 per hour.
Zapata took his complaints to several law enforcement agencies, but they apparently did nothing to follow-up.
According to a LaGrange Police Department incident report filed July 24, 2021, Zapata told an officer he worked as a production line worker at Hyundai Mobis despite being offered a job as an engineer – and having been allowed entry into the country only on the basis of that engineering job offer. His information was taken, but no action was noted in the paperwork. He also made a report to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, which issued him a case number, and he filled out a form to report suspected criminal activity on the website of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Eight months after he arrived in West Point, Zapata left Allswell in August 2021. He later turned to an Atlanta immigration law firm to apply for a visa that grants legal status to victims of human trafficking, a crime involving the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some type of labor.
He said his allegations of trafficking are still under investigation.
A Lying Pitch
In the meantime, labor recruiter SPJ Connect continues to advertise new job vacancies, with videos on social media showing staff pitching their services and the benefits of the TN visa to students in universities across Mexico.
Zapata says inexperienced young graduates are less likely to complain about working conditions once in the U.S.
On SPJ Connect’s Facebook page, a recording from an April 8 visit to the Universidad Tecnológica de Huejotzingo captured the aspirational rhetoric at the heart of the company’s recruitment strategy.
Addressing a crowd gathered at a campus auditorium, an SPJ Connect executive, Yadira Leos, explained that although students might only have heard of U.S. work programs in the context of agricultural labor, the TN visa is different.
“You will be able to go to the U.S. and grow personally and professionally … [Your loved ones] will see you grow and you will impact their lives…. Because if you can do it, they will say, ‘I can do it, too,’” she said, noting that her company has roughly 500 vacancies to fill every single month.
One of Leos’ colleagues, Elizabeth Cantú, is seen on the video explaining in Spanish that all the jobs SPJ Connect recruits for are in the U.S. automotive industry. Her brief presentation suggested assembly line work would be their first job in the U.S.
“Everyone goes to the production line the first year” regardless of job title, Cantú said in the video, which has since been deleted.
But working on an assembly line for any length of time while on a TN visa constitutes immigration fraud, according to experts.
SPJ Connect and Allswell present themselves as two different entities — Allswell is listed as a “satisfied client” on SPJ Connect’s website, alongside Hyundai Mobis, Mando and other manufacturers. Yet, according to information from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Corporations Division, SPJ Connect and Allswell share the same registered agent address: 124 Big Horn Drive in Newnan. And an individual named Youngjin Lee is listed as both CEO of SPJ Connect and secretary of Allswell.
SPJ Connect did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
‘They don’t stop asking for Mexicans’
If some visa workers are paid less than local workers, it could incentivize employers to rely more and more on foreign labor pools.
Employers are going to naturally prefer the cheaper, more vulnerable option.
“Before filling vacancies with local workers, [companies] give us the opportunity to bring them people from here,” said Leos during SPJ Connect’s visit to the Universidad Tecnológica de Huejotzingo. “Believe me. Once they become familiar with the Mexican work culture, they don’t stop asking for Mexicans.” She repeated that message in a June 13 Facebook Live.
SPJ Connect and Allswell’s efforts to recruit Mexican workers for Georgia manufacturing jobs has received a boost from LaGrange city officials.
Demand for foreign workers can generate tension on the assembly line, as the Mexican nationals interviewed by the AJC explained.
“The comments we got were like ‘Get out of here;’ ‘You’re taking jobs from my people,’” Augusto said. “Every plant that has Mexican workers, the people that work there know that they earn much more than us. Of course they know.”
‘I wanted to be a respected person’
In 2019, the 29-year-old, Jose, rose to production supervisor at a biotechnology company in Tijuana. Hoping to pick up new skills and improve his English, he accepted a production engineer position in 2020 at Hyundai Mobis and moved to Georgia on a TN visa.
The line assembly work he found instead marked a return to a life of manual labor he thought he’d left behind.
“It destroyed me like you have no idea … physically, emotionally, psychologically,” he said. “How is it possible that I killed myself studying and working to try to have a better life when, at the end of the day, it would have been the same if I had just come here illegally?”
Shame kept Jose from letting family members know about his life in Georgia, he said.
“I wanted to do things the right way. I wanted to be an engineer. I wanted to be a respected person.”
“I’m biting my lip now as I talk to you to make sure I don’t start crying.”

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Kidapawan City National High School, also known as City High is located in the City of Fruits and Highland Springs, Kidapawan City.  Founded in 1970, KCNHS is celebrating its 50 years in delivering quality education for all. The School offers Science, Technology and Engineering Curriculum (STE), Enhanced Basic Education Program (EBEP), Special Program in Arts (SPA), Special Program in Sports (SPS), and Special Program in Journalism (SPJ), a variety of programs you can choose when you enter Junior High School. In Senior High School, you can choose from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Strand (STEM), Accountancy, Business and Management Strand (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences Strand (HUMSS), and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track (TVL).
I can say that my roller coaster life in High School started when a representative from Kidapawan City National High School visited my school when I was about to graduate Elementary School, batch 2014. I do not remember her name anymore but she came there to tell as why we should choose City High as our next home. She talked about the school and what I remember the most is that the entrance examination for Grade 7 is fast approaching and she encouraged us to take participation in the said entrance examination.

The first thing you will see upon entering City High before
The day of the examination came and I asked my mom if she could accompany me to the city but she is very busy that time so my brother, who is in college that time, came with me. The moment I enter the school campus of Kidapawan City National High School I was in awe, experiencing City High first hand. I was captivated of its beauty. Unfortunately, the entrance examination is already done but I did not stop there, because I was not able to take the entrance examination I have to rely on my grades to study in City High.
During enrollment, I was really undecided which program to choose. At first, I wanted Special Program in Arts because I love arts and I have been joining on the spot painting or poster making contest while I was in Elementary School. At the back of my mind, I wanted to choose Special Program in Sports because I am a keen Badminton player and I grew up in a family who play and love sport. I can’t enter Science, Technology and Engineering Curriculum simply because I was not able to take the entrance examination which is intended for that program. Finally, I decided to choose Enhanced Basic Education Program because my grades are good and I really wanted to focus on my studies in preparation for Senior High School.

Our very first class picture, the first people to welcome me
I came from a nearby Municipality so everything was new to me and I can’t handle the stressors around me just like how my classmates handle them smoothly because they were used to it. It is like I needed to start all over again. It is very different from how I was taught. Everyday there is a role playing, creative reporting, on the spot oral recitation, a lot of assignments, and other activities. Whenever I make mistakes, they laugh at me but I know that it is a friendly laugh only to motivate me to do better the next time. I still remember that I nearly gave up, while I was crying I told my mom that I can’t  take it anymore but she told me, “You will get used to it and probably even more.”

My role as Chi-Fu in the Musical Play - Mulan
Before, I don’t really like acting because I am shy, I don’t know how to act, and it is not my forte. I did get used to it through the years and be confident enough to show other people the character I am portraying to the fullest of my ability.
I also got the role of Kapitan Heneral in a play in the novel Noli Me Tangere written by Jose Rizal. And I directed a play entitled Biag ni Lam-ang, an epic poem of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos Region of the Philippines. Both of these plays happened when I was in Junior High School. The role I got in Mulan took place when I was in Senior High School.

Buwan ng Wika Celebration with our coach in Diwang Sagisag
This would probably be my most memorable celebration of Buwan ng Wika because I went to school wearing Barong Tagalog hoping to enjoy the day. I forgot that I have to have my review together with my coach ma’am Christel May Paguican and teammates for the upcoming 5th Regional Diwang Sagisag Competition to be held in General Santos City. So I ended up reviewing wearing Barong Tagalog while it’s very loud and vibrant outside.
Ma’am Christel Paguican is not only a teacher, she is a friend, and she is a sister to me. She was my very first classroom adviser in Kidapawan City National High School. I still remember when she scolded me during our oral recitation in her subject. She reads the question first before picking a name to answer it. And me being so talkative, I did not listen to the question because I was talking to my seatmate when suddenly my name was called. I asked ask her what was the question but she said she only reads it once so I had no choice but to tell her I did not know the answer. She then told me that she expected a lot from me and I am very sorry for that. I did not took it against her, instead I made it a lesson that I had to learn and inspiration to do my best. She is one of my mentors that I dearly love and respect.

Dinner after a long day of review
At first I was hesitant to accept the invitation to join the competition because I have a lot of responsibilities as a student in school but ma’am Christel May Paguican is very good at convincing people and I also like history, tradition and culture so I accepted it.
The moment we stepped out of the room after a review, I do not see myself in a competition. I see myself with a family having a good time together sharing a meal.

Division Eco-Scilympics 2017 - Create, Show and Tell
This competition started as a classroom project. Then we competed with other sections in our program. Next to that we competed representing our program. After that is the school level competition. Until we reached the Division level competition.
We started with 4 members. We went through a lot of challenges before coming into this competition. It was decided that the group will be cut into two so the work was doubled. In two hours we needed to create a diorama based on the topic given to us. After that we showed and presented it to the judges and answer all their questions.

Speech Choir - The Congo
The competition was between different programs or curriculum. The three sections in Enhance Basic Education Program was known to be rivals of each other. I was the leader assigned coming from our section. It was at this time that we started socializing with each other and became friends. From then on we have established good relationship with the other sections.

Folk Dance - Class Presentation
If you try to look closely, you can’t see me in the picture. I was not around during this presentation for a very important reason. In order for me to have my grades, I was tasked by our subject teacher to compile all the videos and create a music video about it. This only shows that my High School life is not perfect and this is just one of those times.
Tumblr media
Power Dance Competition -  My classmates for 2 years in Senior High School
This was my last competition as a student of Kidapawan City National in Senior High School under Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It was hard considering that the school was affected by the destructive earthquake that hit Mindanao. We had limited time to practice and we needed to secure a good place to practice which can be accessed by everyone. Amidst the hardship we still managed to give our best during the competition proper and was hailed as the champion.
Tumblr media
Kidapawan City Sports Complex - Badminton Court
All throughout my Junior High School years, I have spent my intramurals in this court and I considered it as my playground. Although I was not enrolled in Special Program in Sports I made a way so that I could still play Badminton. Even though I am not very good at it, it is an honor playing with the Palarong Pambansa players coming from the different programs of the school.

Team Makilala- Old Terminal, Kidapawan to Makilala
My friends for almost 9 years. We are all classmates way back Elementary School. We went to Kidapawan City National High Scholl but chose our own programs. For 4 years, they are the people who accompany me every day going home. When we graduated Junior High School, they transferred to other schools and I was left in City High. I miss those moments when we argue about who gets out of their room last because everyone is waiting outside and is eager to go home especially when we have night classes. Sometimes I feel lonely because I was used to riding the jeep with them by my side but since we started to take different paths those seats are occupied by strangers. That is the reason why I sleep in the jeep to my way home aside from I am so tired.
Tumblr media
The Panget Squad - smiling despite adversity
I became friends with these people throughout my Junior High School days. They are one of the people who know and understand me. We share a lot of commonalities in education, arts, music, and personality. We took different strands in Senior High School but we make time for each other as much as possible. The group is not complete in the absence of one member.
Tumblr media
WHTP Squad - after Hataw Presentation
When I enter Senior High School, I opened myself for the possibility to meet new friends. That’s where I got to meet them. Some are coming from other programs in Junior High School and others are transferees. We did not instantly had connection with each other but time made it possible.
Tumblr media
My classmates for 4 years in Junior High School
I consider all my friends my family. We don’t just celebrate happy moments. We are also there to accompany each other at our lows. When I am with them, my problems become small. They will always have a special place in my life.
Tumblr media
Moving-Up Ceremony
I spent 6 years of my life in Kidapawan City National High School. It gave me a sense of protection and an assurance of preparation from the outside world and what lies ahead. I am very happy I chose City High as my second home. It was the best decision I made and I did not regret anything about it. I was able to discover the best of my abilities and be able to share it to other people. Truly, Kidapawan City National High School is home to committed and passionate stakeholders which molds a well-educated and well-rounded individuals.
When I was about to give up, my mom was there to cheer me up. She was right when she told me I will get used to the things that is giving me stress in my first year of being part of the City High family and I had fun dealing with it. I was able to balance all my subjects together with my extra-curricular activities. I graduated Junior and Senior High School with High Honors. These achievements are not mine alone, thanks to my friends who made the journey worthwhile, my classmates for sharing their ideas with me, my teachers who taught me life lessons, my family who supported me big time, and most especially to the Father Almighty for giving me strength to endure everything.
Now, I am off to the next chapter of my life. I’m not going to ask for an easy journey but a strong will to finish what I have started.

A glimpse behind her mask. (part 2- knowing the deeper me)
What is my dream? What do I want to become?
I am Ma. Lourie May M. Mina, a simple 18-year-old teenager, having an average life living in the peaceful barrio of Brgy. Capirawan, Palo, Leyte.
When I was still a kid, I’m being usually left in the care of my grandparents because my mother has to go to the school she teaches. While after sending my mother off to school early in the morning, my father has to go to our rice field before the “mayas” finish devouring the rice grains.
I have three younger siblings, and as the eldest, it is expected that I am always the mastermind of every trouble that will occur.
I could still remember the day when my sister and I discovered a pair of scissors being hidden in the attic. My grandmother was busy planting in her garden while my grandfather was also focused on making bamboo chairs. I didn’t know what came into my mind when I started cutting my sister’s hair off. But it seemed that she’s actually amazed looking at her hair falling on the ground.
Spending my early elementary days at Campetik Elementary School, where the PNP Regional Office was almost just ten yards away, it was common for me to see trainees jogging on the street with muds all over their bodies and with very exhausted faces full of sweat.
That’s the time when I finally thought that someday, I will also be wearing that blue striped uniform. Being a policeman as my dream was the reason for me to act superior towards the other kids. Some of my mother’s co-teachers would say that I am boyish since I always bully my boy classmates by pulling their shorts down. Sometimes, being involved into boxing and wrestling even if we’re in the middle of the class.
But my mother thought of a bright idea that turned my whole world upside down. When I turned grade 3, I was transferred to Palo Central School. There, I finally felt that I don’t have friends anymore. For the first time in the history of my life, I was bullied. The clever and tough me changed into a cry baby in my new environment. Every day, I’m always afraid of what will happen the next day.
But as I turned grade 4, I learned how to defend myself and finally learned my lesson. From that moment on, I am not a bully anymore and neither to be bullied.
Since there are a lot of fruit bearing trees all over the yard in my grandparent’s house, it was always my task to climb up to the roof top to get some guava,” santol” and” dalandan” while my siblings were waiting for me to hand over the fruits with their heads facing upwards.
From then on, the rooftop where the guava,” santol” and” dalandan” trees seemed to converge, was the place where I considered as a safe zone. A place where I could be alone since I’m the only one who can climb the trees up to the rooftop. It was the only spot where I could spend my time whenever I get to repay all the troubles I did and that was after my mother scolded me.
And most of all, the experience that I considered as the highlight of my childhood was when I climbed a twenty-year old “santol” tree and didn’t notice that a big colony of bees was hiding behind its two big branches. When I went to school the other day, my classmates thought that I have a chicken pox because of the bite marks on every inch of my exposed skin.
I spent my high school years in Palo National High School. I met my first crush there. I seriously tried to keep it as a secret except to my two friends. But unfortunately, one of them did not intend to keep it to herself. Until the whole SPJ class knew who he was for me and later on, my crush knew it as well. But thanks God, my mother was his godmother that was why he considered me more of a friend than just a mere admirer.
I somehow miss my old school since it was the place where my talents were first acknowledged. I won first place in siday making. I became a part of the desktop publishing group in our Filipino publication. I was also a singer of my school’s Circle of Performing Artists. And my feature and editorial writings were also published on our English school paper even though I often get allergic into writing in English. I even wrote some poems in our literary page.
PNHS was where I really envisioned the future me. Which was to become a cadet either in the Philippine National Police Academy or in the Philippine Military Academy. I also had a lot of true friends there. They’re also the reason why I never gave upon my dreams. Even when most people say that I can’t make it because I don’t know how to swim, I’m not tall, the training is rigorous and many other reasons.
When I was in grade 9, I also felt how to admire a girl. Yes, a girl. She was the reason for me to finally forget all the bitter sweet memories of my campus heartthrob crush. In the middle of my high school years, I somehow wondered if I’m a lesbian.
But the answer to my somehow, “identity crisis” was finally concluded. It was summer before I moved to Senior High when I met this tall, dark and handsome guy in a “sayawan”, a plaza where the annual disco is being held in connection to our barrio fiesta celebration. When I saw him approaching with his hand reaching for a dance, that was the first time I literally felt the whole world stop. Seriously, I am not joking.
Months passed and we are still in touch through texts and chats. I learned so much about him and so is he. I am really comfortable conversing with him. Not to mention his matured “paasa” style. We also shared our thoughts, ideas, including our dreams in life. I remember he even got shocked when I told him that I want to become a cadet in PNPA.
But I was glad he is not the same as those who are discouraging. He said that he knows I can make it. Several weeks have passed and we totally don’t have any communication at all. And it was all because of me. I told him not to contact me anymore for some reasons.
Last October 2017, is when I took the entrance exam for PMA which was held in Eastern Visayas State University, the same school where he studied engineering. My parents were so supportive of me taking that exam, and we actually went there early. As I was falling in line, I saw a familiar figure. It was him and I wasn’t just day dreaming or hallucinating. The minute I saw him standing in the middle of the throng people that will take the exam, many questions kept running on my mind, “What is he doing here?” “Is he here to wish me luck? But that’s impossible!” “Maybe he has a class later and he’s just looking on what’s the matter.” I don’t even know if he ever saw me because I just hid my face with a piece of paper.
The next month, the results were finally posted online. As I saw the entire list, I was surprised for two reasons. First was unfortunately, my name wasn’t on the list. And second was his name was printed bold and clear as a passer! It took me some time to process the whole thing out. At first I was really disappointed. I really want to pass the exam since it was the only possible way to make my lifetime dream come true. Later on, I found out that he also found out that he also passed the entrance exam in PNPA! But as I asked my friend Anagay, “Why is it that my dreams happened to him instead?” The only thing that she said was, “Your dreams happened to him because he himself is your dream.” 

Mike Reilley Blog Post
I really enjoyed Mike Reilley’s visit to our class. I thought it was very helpful to my professional development, and I especially enjoyed his lecture regarding new Google tools. I liked learning about the MapChecking function, and believe that it will be helpful to many different forms of journalism. I particularly think that this will be helpful within political journalism, especially with things like campaign events, rallies and protests/demonstrations. One of the “bonus” tools I also really enjoyed was the “lose the very” website. I find that I frequently looking for synonyms when I am writing, and I think that it will be amazing for making my writing more succinct. I also had the same thoughts regarding the “Thsrs” website, as I struggle to make my writing the most concise it can be. I also think the Google Earth Engine Timelapse could be very helpful for examining stories, subjects or areas over time.
Before listening to Reilley’s lecture/program, I did have some background knowledge on data scraping and using materials like Google Sheets and Google Flourish. However, Reilley’s discussion was a good refresher on how to use these tools, since I had not used them since the fall when I was in Multimedia News Production. I also liked how Reilley explained it because he made it seem a lot more simpler than it did in earlier courses. I also enjoyed that he was connected to the SPJ,
I do think Reilley’s lecture/program would be very beneficial to students in the future. However, I think that the program would be most beneficial in lower level journalism classes, so that students can hone these skills as they move through years at Elon. I wish that I had learned about some of these tools for my Multimedia News Production class, even though I am grateful that I have these tools and skills to use now. Overall, though, I thought that this program was great for furthering my multimedia skills, and I am glad that someone like Reilley was available to present it, because he made it very accessible and easy to understand.
