The shared rural network (SRN) is a billion pound scheme 50% funded by UKG and 50% by the mobile operators aimed at getting more 4G in rural not spots. As the name implies they will share masts making the expansion of 4G into these areas more economical.

The first phase is to hit a target with respect to partial not-spots. What will be more difficult is the next stage where areas further away form 4G infrastructure, not spots, are brought into the 4G online community.

In addition EE is talking with it's rivals in sharing masts in rural areas. EE has the largest number of masts in the UK, including the rural areas. Sharing of masts will make connection to Vodafone or O2 much easier.

(2024-06-02 image ©shared rural network) The Shared Rural Network (SRN) is a scheme financed by the operators [50%] and UKG [50%} to get 4G mobile coverage into rural areas. This has been running for a number of years and whilst EE clim to have built their share of the network the other operators are lagging behind. Obviously the build has started at the easy targets to gain a large initial impact. Now the Public Accounts Committee have warned that there is real danger that the target dates will not be met, due to the costs of providing a 4G network in these harder to build areas. The pace will slow.

Part of the issue is the focus on competition between operators even in these remote locations and is all masts were shared between operators then the situation would improve.

Not withstanding all of this Vodafone have announced that it has extended its SRN obligation to over 250 sites as well as expanding 4G / 5G coverage over Northern Ireland.
