Safe Routes to School

The comments below were made at the LAUSD School Board Meeting on 10.13.2020 regarding traffic Input to City of Los Alamitos Interactive Map.

I am Jody Roubanis and am currently the Los Alamitos Council of PTAs Walk to School Day Chair. International Walk to School Day was last Wednesday, but it was celebrated virtually this year due to COVID. 

On behalf of the California PTA 2008 resolution on Safes Routes to School, I encourage you to help make routes to schools safer for students using Active Transportation such as walking and biking to travel to and from school by identifying safety concerns in an interactive map provided by the City of Los Alamitos.  

The Los Alamitos Unified School District geographic boundaries encompass several communities including Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and even parts of Cypress. Students attend schools in the Los Alamitos Unified School District, after elementary school, they attend Oak or McAuliffe Middle School, and ultimately Los Alamitos High School.  All three of these secondary schools are in the City of Los Alamitos.  

As part of its Active Transportation Plan “ATP”, the City of Los Alamitos is conducting a traffic study that will conclude before regular school traffic patterns resume (due to the end of the grant that is funding the traffic study).  For students who are returning to schools, we are in a hybrid schedule where much of the teaching and the learning occurs virtually – not face-to-face. Because data collectors will not be able to directly observe regular traffic patterns around Los Alamitos schools, it is important that all who have experienced difficulty in traveling around the Los Alamitos secondary schools during busy traffic times provide their input.  You do not need to be a Los Alamitos resident to participate.

It should be noted that the City of Los Alamitos has applied for Active Transportation Safety Improvements grants in the past and has been denied, in part because of lack of community input into its Active Transportation Plan.  It behooves everyone who is concerned about the safety of Los Alamitos Unified School District secondary student of now and of the future to participate in the City of Los Alamitos interactive map to improve traffic safety especially for traveling to and from school.
