Edit: The two updated versions got lost in the reblogs, and people keep asking for characters, so I'm editing the original post now.

Also, after playing In Stars and Time, I have realised Siffrin isn't really voiceless in the way I meant, and people have said Six and especially Mono shouldn't count, but consider: it's my gender and I get to choose the blorbo

In 2024, the professional sailing team formerly known as Spindrift, now renamed Sails of Change, will return to compete with an expanded fleet of multihulls. This transformation marks a new chapter in the team’s long history of success and environmental commitment.
Duncan Späth, son of Dona Bertarelli, will assume the role of skipper of the TF35 Sails of Change 10. After three seasons as mainsail trimmer, Duncan inherits the sail number SUI10 from his mother, who helmed the legendary D35 Ladycat multihull for over a decade. This transition marks a family continuity in the world of competitive sailing.
Duncan has been actively involved in team activities from a young age, balancing sailing with his studies. His experience includes three world record attempts for the Jules Verne Trophy and victories in prestigious competitions such as the Transat Québec-Saint Malo and the Rolex Fastnet Race. Now, in addition to being skipper, Duncan works as a manager in sustainability management, taking on more responsibility within the team.

Spindrift Racing: Because sometimes a family can be a skipper, a sponsor, a stepson, ten other guys, and an Ultime.

Violet in Fourth Wing:
"Yeah, well, I'm his..." I open my mouth and shut it a few times because… fuck if I know what I am to him. But the longing that holds my heart hostage, this driving need to be at his side because I know he's suffering, no matter if it means throwing myself headfirst into uncertainty… I can't deny what he is to me. "I'm just… his."
Xaden in Onyx Storm:
What even am l?

We all laugh about “did you just ask my father to leave his own house” but flint is and always has been the family guard dog he literally doesn’t know how else to be it’s not in his DNA. This is MY family and you’re threatening them gtfo bark bark bark. The fact that he always returns to casa de barlow without fail and she dresses his fight wounds. Miranda giving the kill order for the maria aleyne and charles town and he follows it to the letter. Real canine loyalty type shit. Silver confused flint forgives him after their fight not realizing he’s flint’s guardian now. Silver pulls the gun on him at skeleton island and his face immediately transforms from growling defiance to sad betrayal. You adopted me, how could you do this to me? 🥺 Thomas looks at him in the field like 🤨 but he keeps walking up to him anyway. What else is he supposed to do, NOT run up to the porch of his house?

i know that uhura’s role in tos was written to be like a radioman (the guy in wwii movies who carries the phone on his back sometimes) meaning that the “communications officer” role evolved from radioman to linguist in the time since tos aired. but that makes uhura in tos really interesting with a retrospective read of her character, applying things novels and later iterations of her have fleshed out, because she doesn’t do any visible linguistic work in any tos episode. she does security and navigation and piloting and engineering which sort of makes her seem like a valuably flexible sort of many-skilled officer.
it was probably both enterprise with hoshi and the 2009 movie that really cemented the idea of “communications officer means linguist or at the very least polyglot” instead of it just being an uhura-quirk. uhura in the 2009 movie does a lot of engineering/operating work of comm equipment and is implied to speak a lot of languages on top of be able to interpret subspace “noise,” so to speak (like, there’s no way it’s radio. it can’t be radio. star trek takes place across distances of lightyears—when they say “signal,” i’m assuming it’s not radio). and of course strange new worlds has run with the linguistics angle and made it even more explicit that yes she studies linguistics, linguistics is a core part of starfleet academic infrastructure, to the point where whole episode plots are written around the act of translation.
the retrospective addition of this expertise to uhura makes what she is in tos a character even more focused on leadership and, idk, becoming something like a captain, because she doesn’t seem all that specialized. she’s more of a kirk-like character, or janeway or sisko, characters that have a specialized skill but have set it aside mostly to pursue some sort of command. obviously this wasn’t the intention of her character. writers of uhura have mostly just stumbled on the idea of her as a polyglot (according to wikipedia, first introduced in the novel uhura’s song, so) and been like “neat idea! makes sense! explorers need to learn languages!” and kept doubling down on that idea until we get to an origin-story uhura in snw that (wildly) speaks 37 languages, for whatever definition of speak or language, i guess.
what all this overthinking on my part has generated is this idea of uhura very much like a futuristic-captain aubrey or a captain sisko not nailed down to one station, hanging off the shrouds of a solar-sail ship’s rigging, looking beyond, in the most romantic and idealized version of an explorer. i think a lot of people read/write female characters as being more down-to-earth than the whimsical leader-on-the-sea or more nurturing than than the hardened captain-of-a-ship, partly why janeway and burnham are so wonderful to me. but it’s fun to imagine tos uhura being the exploring-captain archetype, amongst the political structures of the 60s. like the additions to her character over the years have solidified that romantic adventurer portrait of her in tos, when the idea of her in command would be the least welcome.
and the fact that she was shown to be excited about a solar sailing ship in snw, like sisko was in ds9 for that one episode, i think emphasizes this read of her—and that her character-journey in snw is going to be how she goes from bookish linguist to “hanging-on-a-shroud-on-a-sunsail-ship” looking out to “sea”.

on one level, black sails is about what happens before treasure island. on another level, it’s about solidarity and revolution. on a deeper level, it’s about the fucked up things people do because of love. but on the deepest level, it’s about shame

I think my issue with referring to Flint and Silver by their first names is that it makes them sound too normal. James and John are the names of my brother's mates or jesus's disciples. they need their silly made up pirate names to remind me that they are pirates with silly made up names

been thinking about the differences between SASASAP and ISAT lately. because looking just at ISAT and the two hats ending, you'd think loop went through the exact same house as our siffrin, but looking at SASASAP, it's different. it's mixed up. it's obviously a condensed prototype.
but. that doesn't have to mean it's a different universe entirely.
maybe that's just what happens after a thousand loops.
the house warped in act 5. siffrin lost their shit and the house got changed and corrupted, far past its baseline king uncanniness. so it wouldn't be too out-of-the-question for it to be able to warp in more subtle ways as well, due to a more subtle breakdown.
like a jpeg uploaded and downloaded a thousand times, siffrin changed, and the loops changed. over a thousand loops of efficiency, the house got more efficient. rooms combining. items moving. data compressing. and of course, run in a changed house, the script changed as well. it did so slowly, one bit at a time, over a thousand loops of zoned-out half-listening – and by the time siffrin would have noticed each difference, they were already used to it. (and in the moments that they did look at a room that was less familiar than it should be and realize that they had no idea where to find the key, well. that's just classic siffrin, isn't it.)
through sheer repetition, siffrin was corrupted, and the loops and the house along with them. all purpose lost, all signals distorted, until finally they couldn't recognize the meaning in any of it. it was all noise and despair.
so they made a wish. and the loop restarted. not just a reboot, but something more complete.
the data was backed up onto a star – a guide, a warning, a reference – and the loops were factory reset. and for the first time in a thousand loops, siffrin woke up to a clear mind and the crisp sound of birdsong.

No wonder Billy gets blindsided by the intensity of the silverflint situationship in s4. Flint tries to reel him in during s1 and he hates it. He's looking for a way to escape that complicity the moment he's tricked into it. He can't imagine anyone wanting to spend time with the guy who stares at you with his crazy eyes, raves about his machiavellian schemes and then fucking winks at you. He thinks Silver is relatively normal. He thinks that's his cool normal brother who just said a few weird things whilst starving to death. Why would he ever worry about him siding with the crazy eye suicide mission man? He thinks Silver is normal.

Sharing another longer comic I made for The Nib back in 2016, since they'll be shutting up shop at the end of this year. This piece was such a great excuse to dig deep into the world of sail-powered cargo! I particularly loved talking to the team behind Ceiba, who are now years into their build and documenting the entire shipbuilding process along the way.
