Apologies if already asked, but any recommendations on where to start with Shakespeare criticism?

I honestly did not study Shakespeare criticism in the abstract systematically. What I did was to read the plays in the Signet Classics or sometimes Norton Critical Editions. They contained famous essays on each individual play, so I absorbed a lot of the criticism that way and got a high-level overview of it piecemeal.

If you want to go in chronological order, though, the classic Shakespeare criticism starts with Samuel Johnson in the Enlightenment and goes on to William Hazlitt and Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the Romantic period; Tolstoy's denunciation might be the most notable criticism in the late 19th century; in the early 20th century, there's A. C. Bradley and G. Wilson Knight. After that, celebrity theorists: Greenblatt, Kermode, Bloom, Garber. For a wild card, and a wild book, try Ted Hughes's Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being. And if anybody comes at you with the Earl of Oxford or something like that, please read James Shapiro's Contested Will.

Kyiv Post has discovered that Samuel Charap, one of the most prominent Ukraine skeptics among American foreign policy analysts,has been a regular visitor to the White House’s National Security Council (NSC) during the past three years of the Biden Administration. Charap has been a stalwart advocate of Kyiv negotiating with Moscow since the early days of Russia’s invasion in 2014 and a frequent voice in media and international political circles questioning the logic of arming Ukraine.

The NSC, which operates from the West Wing of the White House, is headed by Jake Sullivan, who is Biden’s point man on Ukraine, under whom Charap earlier worked at the US State Department’s Policy Planning Staff before becominga political scientist at the largely US government-financed Rand Corporation.

In the publicly available White House visitor log, one of Charap’s most recent visits, on July 17, 2023, was listed as an appointment with Jonathan Finer, Deputy National Security Advisor under Sullivan.

Here are some examples of his most recent writings, especially since Feb. 24, 2022. They clearly demonstrate an ongoing opposition to arming Ukraine and call instead for negotiations with Russia:

As hundreds of thousands of Russian troops amassed along the Ukrainian border in January 2022, Samuel Charap published an article for Foreign Policy titled, “The West’s Weapons Won’t Make Any Difference to Ukraine,” arguing that “US military equipment wouldn’t realistically help Ukrainians – or intimidate Putin,” which closely echoed previous statements from Charap.

Back in 2014, half-a-year after Russia began its illegal invasion and occupation of Crimea and the Donbas in Eastern Ukraine, Charap wrote a piece for Foreign Policy called “Why Ukraine Must Bargain for Peace With Russia: “The ‘let’s make a deal’ moment has arrived for Kiev [sic] and Moscow. But by pushing a hard-line agenda against Putin, the United States and Europe are only making things worse for Ukraine,” he said, contending that “Ukraine needs to make a deal with Russia if it wants to survive this crisis.”

In 2016, after the initial invasion had sunk in, Charap and Jeremy Shapiro authored “How to Avoid a New Cold War” for the Brookings Institute, in which they seemingly blame the West for Putin’s illegal actions: “The response thus far has seemed more focused on punishing Russia and its leaders for their moral transgressions than on addressing the problems in Western-Russian relations that led to this impasse.”

In the summer of 2023, as President Zelensky was thanking Denmark for committing to send F-16s to Ukraine, Charap published another opinion piece, “An Unwinnable War: Washington Needs an Endgame in Ukraine” criticizing the West for being more focused on providing military aid and economic assistance than a diplomatic resolution.

In “Should Ukraine Negotiate with Russia,” published by Foreign Affairs in July 2023, Charap argued, “But in international politics, one does not get to choose one’s interlocutors. And there is no plausible path to ending the war that does not entail engaging Moscow. So eventually, Washington, Kyiv, Berlin, and others will have to try. This would not be the first time the United States talked to a nefarious regime with a history of deceit in order to stop a war.”

The New Yorker magazine’s The Case for Negotiating with Russia in August 2023 quotes Charap as saying “It’s not necessarily that I think Ukraine needs to make concessions,” but “I don’t see the alternative to that eventually happening.” Meanwhile, in the fall of 2023, as US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Gen. Mark Milley was touting that Ukraine had successfully liberated over 54 percent of Russian-occupied Ukraine and they continue to retain the strategic initiative.

Finally, Charap has been a vocal supporter of a Korean War-type armistice, where there is no declared end or victory. It should be noted, however, that an ongoing conflict would preclude Ukraine from qualification to become a NATO member, a central objective of President Zelensky’s government.

Given the controversial nature of Charap’s commentary over the years, there is plenty of reason for concern, as it becomes known that the White House visitor log shows him as visiting staff a total of three times in 2021, and nine in 2022. In 2023, he visited the White House at least eight times, however, not all 2023 records have yet been published by the Federal Government.

Most meetings were small. However, one meeting in August 2022 had 86 attendees recorded on the government roster, including President Biden.

What changes in US foreign policy Charap influenced is not fully known. However, as murmurs abound that the US has abandoned the “for as long as it takes” promise, potentially in an attempt to coerce Kyiv into a negotiating posture, the role that staunchly pro-negotiation Charap has played will come further under the microscope.

When Kyiv Post contacted Samuel Charap’s office with a set of questions, he largely brushed us off with the exception of a few responses like these:

Kyiv Post: Given past successes and failures for Putin with international agreements, why do you think an agreement with Ukraine now would be effective? And what would you see as an effective mechanism for punishing breach of contract?

Charap: It is not possible to assess the effectiveness of a hypothetical agreement before negotiations have even begun. There are a range of mechanisms that have been used to address non-compliance with international agreements. The snapback clauses in the JCPOA are one example.

Kyiv Post: For the US today, do you prioritize encouraging and supporting negotiations over supplying arms to Ukraine? How have your thoughts on this question changed since Feb 2022? Since 2014?

Charap: Please see [reference to a piece in Foreign Affairs], which says, in part:

“Starting talks does not require stopping the fight. Conducting negotiations is not the opposite of applying coercive pressure. In fact, negotiations are the means by which states can turn that pressure into leverage to accomplish their goals. As Thomas Schelling wrote in his classic ‘Arms and Influence’: ‘The power to hurt is bargaining power. To exploit it is diplomacy – vicious diplomacy, but diplomacy.’ Talks are an instrument for a warring state to further the same objectives it seeks on the battlefield. Historically, they have often taken place during periods of intense fighting. Nowhere in my article do I suggest that Ukraine would have to stop fighting – or that the West would have to cease supporting that fight – in order to start talks.”

Kyiv Post asked Tomasz Nadrowski, host of the “Tyranny Today” podcast to comment on Charap’s responses.

“The problem with both of Charap’s responses here is that they make too many general assumptions about geopolitical negotiations in general, and certainly too many assumptions when it comes to the triangle of relationships between the US, Ukraine and Russia,” he said.

The Polish-born US foreign affairs specialist elaborated:“First of all, Charap assumes that Putin is willing to negotiate in good faith. Second, he assumes that Ukrainians want to negotiate. He also makes assumptions about Russia’s willingness to commit to a set of achievable goals for negotiations; this is a problem given that Russia’s publicly stated goals for the conflict have changed over and over again from the removal of neo-nazism to fighting Western domination to expansionist plans to roll farther into Eastern Europe. Ukraine, on the other hand, had been steadfast in stating its goals with President Zelensky’s well-documented 10-point peace plan.”

Nadrowski, concludes: “Finally, I will say that it’s naive, given all I said above, to think that Ukraine and Russia should or even could participate in serious formal negotiations today. But there are certainly back-channel means for the two nations to hold discussions that could set the stage for future negotiations. In fact, I would be stunned if those back-channel conversations aren’t going on as I write this. On the other hand, if those back-channel conversations are happening, these views expressed by Mr. Charap on Ukraine/Russia negotiations, particularly when also stated in prestigious publications like Foreign Affairs and the New Yorker, might actually do a lot more harm than good.”

The White House could not be reached for comment.

After lengthy and heated oral arguments Monday, Supreme Court experts say the justices are likely to bar the use of affirmative action in college admissions.

"This proved to be a full-contact oral argument for both the advocates and the justices," said George Washington University law professor and Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley. "The challengers clearly had a better day before the court."

The court heard two similar cases on the use of race in college admissions at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina in a nearly five-hour session. An activist group called Students for Fair Admissions brought both cases, and seemed to have more justices on its side.

"Chief Justice Roberts at points appeared to be losing his patience with Harvard's counsel Seth Waxman due to his combative style in oral argument," Turley added in an interview with Fox News Digital. "Waxman spoke over a number of justices who asked questions and did not appear responsive to direct questions from justices."

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CASE: JUSTICES ALITO, ROBERTS SNAP AT HARVARD LAWYER

In perhaps the most telling moments of the arguments, Harvard attorney Seth Waxman got into testy exchanges with Justice Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts in the span of a couple of minutes.

Alito pressed Waxman on why it is that Asian American students regularly receive lower personal scores on their applications than other races. Waxman talked around the justice's questions, causing Alito to get frustrated with the lawyer.

"I still haven't heard any explanation for the disparity between the personal scores that are given to Asians," Alito said.

Waxman then got into a tense back-and-forth with Roberts. The justice asked why Waxman was downplaying race as a factor in admissions decisions, when according to Roberts it must have some impact, or else it would not be included.

KETANJI BROWN JACKSON CLASHES WITH ANTI-AFFIRMATIVE ACTION LAWYER DURING SUPREME COURT ARGUMENTS

Waxman admitted race was decisive "for some highly qualified applicants," just like "being… an oboe player in a year in which the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra needs an oboe player."

"We did not fight a civil war about oboe players," Roberts shot back. "We did fight a civil war to eliminate racial discrimination."

Turley called that moment, "the haymaker of the argument."

JUSTICE THOMAS REJECTS LAWYER'S RATIONALE FOR USING RACE IN ADMISSIONS FOR DIVERSITY: ‘DON’T PUT MUCH STOCK'

"With that frustrated retort to an attempt by Harvard's lawyer to justify using race in higher-education admissions, Chief Justice Roberts illuminated the disingenuous paradoxes at the heart of affirmative action," Manhattan Institute director of constitutional studies Ilya Shapiro also told Fox News Digital.

"On one hand, race is only one of many factors that colleges consider under a ‘holistic’ approach—and never determinative (except in cases as rare as the orchestra's need for an oboe player)," Shapiro added. "On the other, if race can't be used, the number of black students would plummet."

JUSTICES HEAR ARGUMENTS OVER AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN HARVARD, UNC SUPREME COURT CASES

"Thankfully, Chief Justice Roberts appears to be the deciding vote in these cases, and he's on the side of legal equality rather than nebulous considerations of ‘equity’ and divisive racial spoils," Shapiro added. "Come June, the Court will help promote national unity and equal opportunity against the racialist balkanizers."

Judicial Crisis Network President Carrie Severino also said she hopes the court will block future uses of affirmative action.

"The use of racial preferences in education has been an unsuccessful experiment for 44 years," Severino said. "The Court’s argument [Monday] showed that it is high time to return to the constitutional norm of color blindness."

Turley said the 6-3 majority of conservative justices on the court makes it appear much more likely that the court will issue a decisive ruling for Students for Fair Admissions. One of their members could side with the liberal justices or write a separate concurring opinion, and there would still be a majority against affirmative action.

Justice Clarence Thomas was perhaps the farthest to the right in his examination of the universities' lawyers, Turley also noted, often questioning the value of diversity in education in the first place. Meanwhile, the liberal justices appeared to be firmly on the side of keeping affirmative action.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson, Turley said, "seemed indistinguishable from the advocates."

"They would often interject affirmative statements in favor of the use of race as a criterion," Turley added.

The cases are likely to be decided by the end of the court's current term in late June or early July 2023. Jackson, who was a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers before her appointment to the court, recused herself from the Harvard case.

Jason Whitlock’s Pivot To RedPill Content Is Concerning

Okay, strap in, take a seat, grab a coffee, because I been wanting to address this topic for a minute, nahmean, and there’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get it.

I remember the redpill content back in the day and it was different.

What you see now, with guys comparing bank acocunts, cars and status, and the absurd belief that women should automatically see this as something fit to marry, is relatively new to the space. This only started happening when older content creators entered the space, ie. Richard Cooper and Kevin Samuels.

In 2012, 2013, 2014, the kinds of conversations in this space were not glowing reviews of women in the dating market, they were also slightly more nuanced in how they happened, or they things they would note/talk about.

I’m glad a lot of these guys have found ways to get out and start looking for the relationships they want, because it’s important for a man.

Me, myself, I’m what dudes on Youtube would describe as a pookie/ray-ray type. I got these here few ways of making cash, a little spot, my Hyundai and a fly New Balance collection.

So while I am not some “high value” dude, I still empathize with a lot of the MGTOW guys, even speaking up for them sometimes, and it wasn’t like I was immune to dealing with the same situations or noticing the same types of things that they did.

I can definitely see why a women will look at some of the “high value men” and have misgivings, because at the end of the day, money ain’t the only thing moving the needle with women.

I’ll keep it funky for you, Jason Whitlock being involved in the redpill space, discredits all redpill content.

This is a man that found ways to bash black women, even outside of the context of relationships or marriage, and if you don’t believe, then check some his commentary regarding Simone Biles and Serena Williams.

The reality is that people getting passports to see what’s going on in other parts of the country, or the world, is not a new thing. Why are these guys getting thier own label, or being placed in a new category for doing something that people have been doing for the longest of time?

Because you’re only a passport bro, if you travel abroad and say negative things about black women on the way out, too.

What this is about, is your boy Whitlock finding a way to turn “passport bros” into a right-wing talking point, because it helps/ falls in line with Republican sentiment regarding a demographic of people whose vote they’ll never be able to win in a Democratic/ free election.

Is Whitlock concerned about relationships or is this the new cash-grab because the pro-Trump nonsense ain’t getting the numbers that it used to?

Think about it. This is a man that has made so many egregious comments about a lot of things really. So knowing that, do you think it’s easy for bro to get interviews with current or former pro-athletes on his channel?

Hell nah.

Being associated with this guy is death to any athlete’s brand, that’s why he can only get retired players for interviews, if any at all.

Point is, this is not Whiltock stumbling on to something big for his channel, it’s more like a hail mary by a guy that can’t understand that Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder fans don’t want to see him, and the Koch brothers won’t offer him anything close to what those other 2 are getting.

The thing that bothers me is why are Black women being singled out?

I don’t care if it looks like caping because in reality, the things passport bro’s are mad about are things you would see from any other demographic, but you actually need to get around in order to know that.

Latin men, Asian men, African men, European men, they all travel to find what they want, and they’re not going that far and wide because it’s convenient, it’s because they feel they have to in order to give themselves a shot at happiness.

So why is there an extra layer of criticism for Black women, when in reality this is an old trend, and all the other demographics have likely dealt with the same thing?

I’m not falling for the pump-fake, fam, especially not when Whitlock is interjecting himself out of fake love and concern.

I spend a lot of time on Youtube where people often disparage others based on looks and weight, and if Whitlock wanted to be a leader to the black community, he’d start by leading his ass to weight-watchers or at the very least a scale.

🟄 50 Stars in Our Sky is one of my older projects, and one I absolutely adore! Here's a quick summary:

After learning that she's going to be moving to London for her senior year, 17-year-old Bella Armani decides to assemble a group of well-known - and in her mind, misunderstood - students from her school and take them on the adventure of a lifetime.

Basically, a girl gets three people she doesn't really know (but wants to know) together to travel the world with her over the course of summer break before she has to move across the world and away from where she grew up. It's got a lot of themes of found family & some romance in there as well :>. They deserve a nice introduction considering I mess their lives up quite a bit their senior year & first year or so after graduating. Sorry guys. As these are chapter 2 characters, connections include: going to the same school as Arrow and Felipa McVans, Arrow's best friend Brandon Lui, and Arrow's boyfriend Rowan. They also attend the same school as Ellie Shapiro (one of Brandon's friends), the Flair, Cujobu, and Munez families.

She's persuasive and caring, two qualities that helped her get her classmates (particularly Zach) on board with the trip.

〘Zachary "Zach" St James - the bad boy〙 🕮 he/him // bisexual 🕮 5'5" 🕮 Aged 17 🕮 Mexican American 🕮 2020 🕮 best friends with Bella Armani and Zoey Chen, dating Sam Hannaby 〘About〙 Zach has gotten the reputation for being the bad boy at his school, which isn't wrong. He's basically there if you want to rent a guy to piss off your parents, relatives, frenemies, exes, you name it. He rather liked that, considering he got to meet and know so many new people - but after he fell in love with someone using him even more than everyone else, he couldn't really get back into it. Zach's also really smart. Despite most parents hating him for his reputation, he continued to become his class's valedictorian (which surprised and annoyed multiple stuck-up parents and teachers). While most people expect him to be some stuck-up rich boy, he's actually a rather humble person who grew up with his single mom after they immigrated from Mexico when Zach was young. He's kind, shy, and caring, and always willing to help out a friend in need.

〘Samuel "Sam" Hannaby - the baseball captain〙 ♡ he/him // gay ♡ 6'1" ♡ Aged 17 ♡ White ♡ 2020 ♡ Best friends with Bella Armani and Zoey Chen, dating Zach St James 〘About〙 Sam has tried to come out about six times, and every time, nearly everyone except his parents just told him he was confused. It's exhausting. That's why meeting Bella Armani, who said she didn't think he was confused, was one of the best things to happen to him - particularly because she introduced Sam to Zach, who later becomes his boyfriend. (I have to apologize the most to these two, because college is pretty rocky relationship-wise. They get a happy ending though, I promise.) Sam's a great listener, mostly because that's what he needed when he was younger and he doesn't want anyone to be without someone they can talk to.

〘Zoey Chen - the quiet girl〙 ✉ she/her // aromantic asexual ✉ 5'10" ✉ Aged 17 ✉ Chinese ✉ 2020 ✉ Best friends are Bella Armani, Sam Hannaby, and Zach St James 〘About〙 Zoey's probably the most known of the group regarding who she really is, which is the head of the assignment black market at school. Need an essay on the American civil war? She's got one that's guaranteed to get an A, and nobody knows where she got it from. Her dream is to run her own business, which - knowing her - won't be that difficult to achieve.
