Archaeologists Discover Rare Pebbled Mosaic Featuring Naked Satyrs

Archaeologists excavating in ancient Eretria have discovered a pebbled mosaic floor featuring two naked satyrs.

Eretria was founded on the Greek island of Euboea, emerging as an important polis and trading centre from the 6th and 5th century BC.

The city was described as being involved in several significant historical events. It was listed by Homer in the Iliad as one of the Greek cities which sent ships to fight in the Trojan War.

During the Ionian rebellion against Persia in 499 BC, Eretria and Athens sent aid to their Ionian allies, resulting in the burning of Sardis, the capital of the Persian satrapy of Lydia.

Recent excavations by the Greek Ministry of Culture have unearthed a building near the sanctuary of Daphniforos Apollo, the “Quarter of the Panathenaic Amphorae” and the “House of the Mosaics”.

Within the building interior, archaeologists found a mosaic floor made from natural pebbles, with surviving walls on the south and east sides. The mosaic features a circular black medallion and two naked satyrs, a nature spirit with ears and a tail resembling those of a horse.

Satyrs were considered companions of the god Dionysus, which were thought to inhabit woodlands, mountains, and pastures. The Romans identified satyrs with their native nature spirits, fauns, often shown as a half-human and half-goat creatures.

Excavations also found a raised floor to the north and east sides of the room where reclining couches were likely placed. According to the archaeologists, the room dates from the 4th century BC and served as a banqueting space for celebrations and gatherings.

The area of the building was used as a cemetery during the early Christian era (5th to 6th century AD), where five tombs have been identified within the interior, and five more tombs adjacent to the exterior south wall.

I know everyone knows the story of Actaeon and how he met a terrible fate by stumbling upon Artemis bathing in her forest but did you know that Actaeon was Apollo's grandson? That his father was Aristaeus, lord of the bees and the rustic arts and his mother was Autonoe, daughter of Cadmus and princess of Thebes?

Did you know he was trained by Chiron? That he was considered a hunter so skilled his talent was considered divine, that he was his parents' only child and that he was loved?

Did you know the grief that consumed the household when word of Actaeon's fate reached them? That Cadmus cut his hair, that Harmonia wept and was disconsolate and that his parents... well, Autonoe walked the length of the forest, keeping a sharp eye out for her son, but all she saw were the scattered bones of a fawn. Aristaeus too, had heard his son was torn apart and so fruitlessly, foolishly searched for the bones of a man. (There was none to be found)

Did you know that it was Actaeon's ghost, unhappy and unburied, trapped on the earth, who leaned over his sleeping father and told him of his fate? "You will not find me as you knew me, gather me as a stag." And Aristaeus immediately woke his wife and told her the truth, and together they grieved all the night long.

(Did you know that this is why Aristaeus abandons Boeotia? He could not stand the sight of it and so he went to Ceos. And there he slayed the dog-star. And there he became a healing wind. All in the name of his only son, that foolish, beloved Actaeon.)

Delphi was such a beautiful place. Yes, the ruins were impressive, but the landscape and the ambient made it even better. So much green, big mountains everywhere and only birds singing (well, tourists too xD). I got so exhausted but it was totally worthy :D

The photo shows the temple wall, with the pronaos to the left. The adyton was at the far end of the temple.

On the shrine of Apollo at Delphi:

Between the bounds of east and west, the twin peaks of Parnassus tower to the heavens. The mountain is sacred to Apollo and Dionysus, in whose honour the Theban Bacchantes, honouring the two deities as one, hold their triennial festival there, at Delphi. When the Flood drowned the Earth, this mountain alone rose above the waves, and was all that parted sea from sky. Parnassus’ peaks were differentiated even so by the waters, one rocky summit on display the other one submerged. There Apollo, his skills as yet un-honed, killed the Python with his arrows, avenging his mother who had been driven out when pregnant. Themis once ruled that shrine and oracle. Thus Apollo, hearing the deep chasm in the earth breathe out divine truth, exhale prophetic words, enshrined himself in the sacred cavern, brooded over the sanctuary, and there became prophetic.

We lived in a humble home near Gaza Port, a place filled with memories and dreams for the future. But in a matter of moments, everything we had worked for was destroyed. Our home, our sanctuary, was reduced to rubble. Along with it, the homes of my family and siblings were also destroyed. My brother was injured in the war, adding to our pain and suffering. 🏠💥

During the conflict, I was trapped in Al-Shifa Hospital, where I was working, for an entire month. The fear and uncertainty during that time were overwhelming, as I worried about my family’s safety while trying to help others in desperate need. 😔🏥

The war forced us to flee from the north of the Gaza Strip multiple times, seeking refuge in the south. We moved from Deir al-Balah to Rafah and then to Nuseirat, each time hoping to find safety, only to face more horror and devastation. The journey has been incredibly hard on us, filled with unimaginable suffering and fear for our lives. 🏃‍♂️🌪️

We have endured the pain of displacement, the loss of our home, and the constant threat of violence. Each day is a battle to find food, water, and a safe place to sleep. Despite our efforts, the situation in Gaza remains dire, and we are struggling to survive. 😞🍞💧
