Memorable quotes from the crackfics (not in order):
“The Lizard of Oz”
Kenge: She’s just mad because I keep “antagonizing the animals”
Jasiri: I have an idea.
Kenge: What?
Jasiri: Stop antagonizing the animals!
Narrator: Wow, this is just like a Mario game. The Wicked Witch of the West is Bowser, Jasiri’s Peach all of a sudden, and now the rest have to unleash their inner Mario!
(Kiburi walks toward Jasiri, growling. She bitch slaps him and he goes down*
Janja: *presses a button on Reirei’s side*
Button: That was easy
Mwoga: OI! Who rang that bell?
The group: Us
Mwoga: Can’t you see?
Reirei: See what?
Mwoga: The painting!
The rest: What painting?!
Mwoga: ‘S on that rock clear as the beak on my face! (sticks a slab to the wall, which shows a painting of an animal knocking)
Jasiri: Looks like we have to knock (knocks)
Mwoga: Alright, that’s more like it!
Kandamiza: (melting) How did a hyena and her stupid lizard manage to defeat me?! Oh, what a world! What a world! (dies)
Kenge: That’s for calling me ‘little’
Jasiri: *flips her off*
Kenge: *arguing with Janja* HOLD ON! HER MATE WAS A WITCH, AND WHAT WAS HER BROTHER? A PRINCE! THE WICKED WITCH OF THE EAST, BRO!
Jasiri: *laughing*
Kiburi: *jokingly* I’m gonna eat him
Kenge: YOU’RE GONNA LOOK AT ME AND TELL ME THAT I’M WRONG?! AM I WRONG? HE WORE A CROWN AND HE FLEW DOWN IN A BUBBLE, DAWG!
Janja: I’m not fighting with you-
Kenge: GROW UP.
Jasiri: Well, there’s only one thing I can do now
Jasiri: *starts singing “Holdin Out for a Hero”
Janja, witnessing the guards chanting: What are they saying?
Kenge: How should I know? I don’t speak Ozian
Kiburi: Sounds like they’re saying “oreo”
Reirei: ….What’s an oreo?
The guards stomping past the group: KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL
Janja: *laughs* Look! Those idiots don’t even know where we are!
The guards: *turn around before stomping towards the group, chanting* KILL KILL KILL-
Kenge: And I’M the one with the big mouth?!
Kenge about Kandamiza: I think we’re gonna have to kill her, Jasiri
Jasiri: Damn :(
“Janja in Wonderland”
Zira: Listen here, hyena, if I lose my temper, you lose your head! Understand?!
Janja: (nervously) Y-Yeah, whatever you say, your highness
Njano, the minute Zira turns around: HEY ZIRA, YOUR MOM GAY
Mwoga: Oh look, he’s got bugs!
Vultures: Let’s fix that, shall we?
Time for a shower!
One…two…three!
(The vultures dump water all over Janja)
Mzingo: *looks at Janja, then his parliament and smiles* I think he still has bugs
Janja: What?! *gets splashed again*
Janja: *falling into the hole* Kids, a little help here?!
Wema and Tunu: BYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Narrator: Damn, kids are savage
Following that…
Narrator: And so Janja fell and fell and fell and fell. Lmao karma for trapping the pups in a hole, Janja
Janja: Hey, that was a long time ago!
Sumu: You forgot to get the key
Janja: What key? I didn’t see a—*sees a key appear under the table* Oh that is some bullshit
Janja: Can I say a bad word?
Narrator: Huh?
Janja: CAN I SAY A BAD WORD?
Narrator: *not taking him seriously* Yeah, sure, whatever…
Janja at Zira: YOU MOTHERFUCKING BITCH-
Janja, hiding behind a hedge: Stand back, I got a chainsaw! (makes chainsaw noises, but the cards’ eyes peer through the leaves) Rum....rum.....? Well, I’m dead...

"Sozinha e sem amor, com essa estranha no espelho... Ela sou eu, a Bruxa Má do Leste"
Another Wicked Brasil fanart, this one portraying a scene I like a lot, while Nessa sings and Elphaba prepares her spell Nessa starts mimicking her movements as she says she is the Wicked Witch of the East. Very very iconic everyone should watch it

Lies of P sequel spoilers/theory
Yo, I know we're all anticipating the next game of the Lies of P franchise to have the main focus shifted to The Wizard of Oz, but i cant help but wonder....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first pic is from the Wizard of Oz movie, the Wicked Witch of the East, crushed by Dorothy's house when she arrives in Oz.
The second pic is from the cut scene at the end of the first game. The girl is wearing the iconic ruby shoes but she wears a red dress. (I honestly haven't delved deeper into TWO lore if Dorothy's really depicted with a blue/silver dress as the Judy Garland movie plays out)
My theory is that we may be playing a sort of "prequel" to Lies of P or... That the game can be happening simultaneously with the LOP storyline (similar to the Little Nightmares DLC)
The only reason why i think of it is because
1.) the ending cut scene shows Krat not being destroyed at all. And i doubt that everything would be fixed by the time Paracelsus leaves. And
2.) the girl might be the Witch of the East. Just from her dress color and socks.
If we meet/challenge the witch of the east, it would tie nicely to the sequel game that would focus on The Wizard of Oz. (We might defeat her then enter Dorothy: "Toto, i have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Scene cuts to black).
Even though i strongly believe the DLC will still focus on Pinocchio based on the teaser images. (Hopefully we'll get some Carlo/Legendary Stalker/Gemini lore!) I guess it wouldn't hurt for a little more teaser stuff for the sequel. Like meeting an Npc or so.

I feel like some people tend to be annoyed with the tin woodman in the patchwork girl of oz for not letting them tear a wing off a butterfly, but really it’s perfectly in character.
First thing’s first, animals are sentient in Oz, including insects, as we know from H.M. Wogglebug, thoroughly educated, and he is known for his kind and wonderful heart and wanting to treat everyone with kindness. It is, of course, a reoccurring theme that he is highly sympathetic to insects, therefore he’d probably view everyone equally, including insects.
But that’s not the only reason.
In this scene, he argues how painful it would be for the little creature, who is very sensitive to pain.
Tumblr media
He rules Winkie country. The yellow butterflies are under his rule.
But originally, he was from Munchkinland and was born under the Wicked Witch of the East’s rule. She literally forced him to dismember himself by enchanting his ax because he fell in love with a servant girl.
He knows FIRST HAND the kind of pain that the butterfly would go through.
And worst of all, this is happened at the hands of the his ruler. She let him be harmed in this way because he (like all of her subjects) was small and defenseless and she didn’t care about him.
The yellow butterflies come from winkie country, they’re under his rule and are his responsibility.
He wants to protect them.
HE DOESN’T WANT TO BE LIKE HIS TYRANNICAL DICTATOR.
HE WANTS TO BE A GOOD RULER.
HE WANTS TO PROTECT HIS SUBJECTS LIKE HIS RULER DIDN’T PROTECT HIM.

on one hand I think "yes add more nods to the 1939 film that's so fun I love the 1939 movie and it's the most recognizable one to the general public" but on the other hand I think "maybe don't add too many references to the 1939 film because if you give any critical thought to it, the plot of the two works together just barely line up and sense begins to unravel if you give it the smallest bit of thought: the entire movie takes place in the span of four songs in act 2"

Idk what I'm trying to say with all this- don't get it wrong I LOVE both properties dearly. It's just funny when one is framed as a prequel when that only applies to act 1 since the entire thing takes place in the background of act 2. All three (book/movie/musical) entities are very unique in their own special ways! It's fun to look at it closely and realize some little silly bits about it though :3

Tell me a fun fact about a musical
Fun fact: backstage of the original cast of newsies, right before king of New York, the boys would perform the governer’s mansion (wicked witch of the east) scene from Wicked. The full scene. How do I know this? KARA LINDSAY ACTUALLY TOLD ME (still freaking out that I met her) but anyway yeah that’s awesome!

kyle christopherson & max moore week three: homecoming @moorehq
"Hold on hold on hold on. Her sister was a witch right? And what was her sister? A princess, the wicked witch of the east bro. You're gonna look at me and you're gonna tell me that I'm wrong? Am I wrong? She wore a crown and she came down in a bubble, Doug. Grow up bro, grow up." ( src )
spirit week: meme day
as usual, kc managed to rope his best friend into letting him be the star of this show and max happily agreed, and the pair spent monday night 'rehearsing' for the many performances they would end up doing throughout the day, stopping whenever anyone asked what meme they were and precisely acting out the scene.

Do you think Wicked (the musical) fails to answer its own question? "Are people born wicked..." I think it's a nature vs nurture thing.
Yeah the question is very nature vs. nurture, but whether the musical fails to answer its own question (posed in regards to Elphaba) that's a big fat no.
If anything I think it's a bit overly zealous to cast Elphaba as a perfect angel who did nothing wrong uwu but got very much thrown into that situation and had no other choice. Which is not at all how the book portrays her. Elphaba makes some shady choices with dire consequences for herself and the people around her.
Which is something that does kinda happen in the musical when you beef up the other characters, like I discovered with Wickedly Queer. Suddenly, you see more of the fallout and impact Elphaba choosing the Noble Path™ has on the other characters. Glinda is left with legit heartbreak, agonized she still doesn't dare take that leap. And even in the Wicked Witch of the East scene when Elphaba says she's "done everything she could for Nessa", that should raise some eyebrows from the audience this time around, because is that really true?
Tumblr media
Nessa isn't just a brat, like in the original (saying it's too late to run to Fiyero and should just stay with her). When Nessa mentions she abandoned them both, this time around she is a brat with a point. The musical completely glosses over the fact that Elphaba leaving with no warning and showing no sign of remorse, might have left her surroundings confused, worried, and in despair.
So Wicked the musical is a lot more black and white than it likes to portray itself to be when it comes to Elphaba. In an attempt to show "what happened before Dorothy landed in Oz" it had to have the audience sympathize and empathize with perhaps the biggest villain in film history. But in doing that they overcompensated and made Elphaba the beloved can-do-no-wrong-girl, which in my opinion is a bit of a waste in what could've been a very morally complex story.

The Woodsman (2016) is a haunting stage production...
The Woodsman is a 2016 stage production created by Edward W. Hardy and James Ortiz.
I was initially worried that this would be one of those "trying painfully hard to be grimdark" productions because a trailer opened with an announcer declaring obnoxiously, "Forget what you know about Oz," but thankfully the trailer's voiceover is misleading, and the production actually feels more invested in Oz "lore" than most modern retellings. While the production does have a dark tone at times, it feels more in the vein of Return to Oz than say, the book version of Wicked. Whereas Maguire's Wicked sometimes ventured into, shall we say, grunge for the sake of grunge or even stripping away the unsettling elements of Oz to make its version of Oz more mundane, the darker elements of this production are much more, "What if we expanded on Nick Chopper's origin story and crafted a tragic love story?" I guess I'm more forgiving of "darker retellings of Oz" if they actually seem to care about Oz, and this production seems to care a lot.
What I mean is, in Maguire, Oz could kind of be any generic dystopia with a few fantasy trappings. Whereas, in this production, the fantasy elements and Baum elements are deliberately woven into the dystopic atmosphere of Munchkinland under the Witch. And it doesn't feel like "we're taking Oz and making it a dystopia," it feels like "we're trying to build off what is already there, and if it feels dark at times, that's not because we're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It's because a story of thwarted love has inherently tragic qualities to it."
Speaking of the Witch, she is a magnificently contrived puppet that moves with this loping menace and the scenes between her and Nimmie Amee are devastating, and one of the most interesting aspects of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The play is largely silent, save for an opening narration setting the scene. The justification for this is under the Witch of the East's rule, "words became dangerous." It allows for some incredibly poignant pantomime on the part of the actors. Nick has big himbo energy. He's adorable.
Tumblr media
We even see Nick's parents in this version and they are deeply endearing. The silent sequences of Nick learning to chop wood from his dad are sweet. But it's Eliza Simpson, as Nimmee, who really shines. She conveys a great deal with her eyes, learning ways to survive under the eyes of the Witch. Another interesting aspect of this production is they make her the daughter of a sorcerer, and by the end, she's found means to put her own skill in magic to work in standing up to the Witch. The production gets to play around with the "no one ever dies in Oz, except when they totally do" lack of continuity in Baum by having Nimmee breathe life into the Nick after his meat body has been lost.
And again, God, her eyes...
Tumblr media
I do have certain reservations. Like, making the catalyst for Nimmee fully coming into her own against the Witch be sparked by her romance with Nick feels... Well, it works for the production's romance angle, I suppose. I'd love to see where this version of Nimmee Amee goes from here, and I'd love to see her rebuild her life, Chopfyt-style, even if Fyter doesn't come into play in this production.
One moment I want to highlight is the first time Nick gets a limb replaced, and you see Nimmee's reaction to the tin arm and we see the tin arm wrap around her in an embrace. It's a very touching moment, and the puppetwork, done in motion with the actor's performance as he pantomimes a missing arm, is done in a really cool and heartbreaking way.
So, reservations aside, I'd still recommend it. It's a fascinating piece, and you can find it on BroadwayHD through Amazon right now, in the US, at least.

So I saw Wicked last night (absolutely incredible, wonderfully done, everyone was amazing and it was so good to see a person of color be cast as Fiyero) and it got me thinking, would a disabled person be able to play Nessarose?
For context, Nessarose is Elphaba’s little sister, the Wicked Witch of the East. She is also, for most of the story, disabled, having been born premature and paralyzed from the waist down. Near the end of her story, she convinces Elphaba to fix her legs and is able to walk with the use of her silver slippers, but we never see her after that scene.
That makes me think she could be played by an ambulatory wheelchair user, or by someone who can walk for short periods of time. I don’t know how it would affect the one quick change I noticed (for the song Dancing Through Life) and I don’t know if the actress I saw was disabled. They did use a functioning wheelchair that the actress could propel herself, and I feel like this would be a good role to have an actual disabled person play.
Any physically disabled people and/or wheelchair users, please chime in with your thoughts!

Fashion in Oz: The Good Witches (6)
Tumblr media
Moving on to another Oz adaptation: The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, which - being based on the original book - has two good witches instead of one. Here we have the Good Witch of the North, who is basically sporting on a sexier version of the Good Witch's original look (because that's Miss Piggy, she has to be sexy in every scene she is). I mean, you have the pointy hat (though without the bells, making it more like a witch hat, it rather has a white-translucid veil on it), the white hair and a white dress like in the original, with the addition of white gloves and a more traditional "magic wand with the star at the top".  You might have noticed the Good Witch's color motif here is entirely white (which isn't the color of all witches in this iteration, just the North Witch's color). But the dress is definitively much sexier than what the Good Witch would have originally worn - with quite a prominent cleavage, and the sleeves being of the same translucid material than the witch's hat-veil. Of course, I also have to leave this clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdIAWaFoXUs
Tumblr media
As for the Muppet's version of Glinda... she is basically Miss Piggy. Just Miss Piggy in Oz X) Mind you, she still has her own color palette - here a sort of mauve/lavender purple, with elbow-sized gloves, a big-cleavage sleeveless dress (just like her sister of the North), and the addition of a feather boa. Oh, and she also has blond hair, to match the idea of varying hair colors (East's red, West's black, North's white, South's blond)
Tumblr media
I've got one more show to end this series, which won't be this one but the next. This one is the anime adaptation of the Wizard of Oz. Not, not the movie adaptation, because that would be too many adaptations - rather the television series based on several of Baum's books. It is "Ozu no Mahotsukai" (or rather Ozu no Mahoutsukai), and this is their depiction of the Good Witch of the North. As you can see, they actually tried to stick to the original book description, of a little old woman with a pointy hat and a simple dress. They even went to the extend of adding the ruff collar, the similarly wavy end-of-sleeves, and a little magic wand with an N at the top. They didn't include the bells around the hat though, but I think no one does that to better have the witch be separated from the Munchkins. What the anime did add or change was making the Good Witch actually fat, the addition of little glasses, the detail of her having stripped socks (probably to evoke the stripped socks of the Wicked Witch), the addition of a cape in her back, and finally the color of her outfit, which goes from white to here orange. I guess they didn't want her to detone too much with the fantastical and weirdly-colored landscape they had created for Munchkinland, and wanted to rather give her a more... a warmer, softer color indicating she is indeed a nice little grandma-witch. (The fact they gave her a cape, stripped socks and a pointy hat makes me think maybe they tried to subvert the MGM movie - because in this movie, a cape with dress, stripped socks and pointy hat are the iconic look of the Wicked Witch(es). I don't remember any other Witch character, in the various adaptations, wearing a cape... so maybe this was the anime's attempt at truly making a reverse-Wicked Witch)
Tumblr media
And we get to the second Good Witch of "Ozu no Mahoutsukai" - Glinda, the Witch of the South! Here we also have some major changes compared to the book counterpart... She is definitively young and good-looking, and she has notes of white in her design - from her pale white skin to the white cape behind her back (which isn't actually white, but translucid, as you can see here:
Tumblr media
We also have some slight... "sexification" if I could say, with a sleeveless dress with a clear division between the skirt and a very torso-fitting bodice that visibly closes on the chest. We find back a headwear of royalty, here a silvery diadem. As for the color palettes, it is a bit muted here, but this Glinda has the usual choice of turquoise (for her hair and her skirt) and pale pink (for the bodice part of her dress, as well as the rest of her palace). You can see the color more vividly here:
Tumblr media
Overall this has to be one of the most unusual Glindas I have seen, to be fair, due to how... well, unusual her design is here. Or maybe it is just me?

familiars
familiars are beings that assist those who practice magick. the idea of familiars has been around for a long, long time, though they are mostly associated with 16th-17th europe, but they have roots all the way back to the paleolithic and neolithic concepts. this is found in cave art depicting scenes that are thought to represent magical themes. many of these ancient animals became popular animals for familiar spirits, which indicates that it may be ancient traditions and practices surviving through generations. it’s also seen that many familiar spirits are associated with animals of pagan deities.
most of the modern-world ideas of witchcraft stem from europe after this rise of christianity, and familiar spirits are no different. in 1233 pope gregory ix issued a decree declaring that cats are associated with witchcraft, which caused a mass killing of cats in europe. this purge of the furry creatures led to a rise in europe’s population of rats, which eventually helped to spread the black plague (1347) around europe. cats are often thought to be a similar energy as women, which is why they became such a prominent depiction of familiar spirits. in 1318 pope john xxii sent nine alleged witches to be be prosecuted for a multiple magical practices. in 1563 queen elizabeth issued a witchcraft statute that created a penalty for anyone who is found guilty of conjuring “evil and wicked spirits”.
in the witchcraft trials in europe, “familiar” was often interchanged with words like “imp”, “demon”, or “devil”. it was believed that these spirits sought after witches and attached themselves to them. the witch was then thought to have no choice but to keep the spirit. it was also thought that familiars had names and that the witches did not choose them.
the lore surrounding familiars indicates that witches receive a familiar spirit once they are initiated into the witches’ sect.
one common thing in literature involving familiars is them taking transporting their witch to the sabbat.
a familiar can choose you, or you can choose a familiar. when going about choosing a familiar, many witches use natural affinity. they wait until they find an animal they are drawn to, using their intuition to choose. some, on the other hand, do a journey quest through the astral plane for their familiar.
familiars being sentient beings, they may display inappropriate or unacceptable behavior (by human standards) on some occasions. as time passes in a relationship between a familiar and a witch, it’s likely that the familiar will grow independent and be less compliant. one way to fix this issue is by using seals.
the genesis seal creates a link for a familiar with the material realm. the snake represents the cycle of rebirth. the spirals represent the power of transformation. the number three represents the forces that bring manifestation: time, place, and energy.
the seal of calling is used to evoke/invoke/summon your familiar spirit. the cloud represents manifestation of spiritual forces. the spirals represent the portals to the otherworld. the hand represents the opening of a magical portal.
the seal of departing will send your familiar back to the otherworld. the cave pictured represents the gates to the underworld. the three spirals symbolize transformation. three is the number of manifestations. the fourth stars represent north, east, south, and west respectively.
the seal of protection is to call upon the protective power of your familiar.
philosophy
philosophy is often considered the science of estimating values. it is used to arrange things into order of priority. the mission of philosophy (a priori) is to establish a connection or relation between the visible world to the invisible world, as well as to find the ultimate cause or nature of events or things.
many philosophers have defined philosophy as many different things, so below are some of the most famous definitions of philosophy.
”the science of things divine and human, and of the causes in which they are contained” -cicero
cicero states that philosophy is to study humanity and it’s connection to the divine sources, as well as to establish a reasoning to our containment in corporal forms.
”the science of effect by their causes” -hobbes
this one is pretty self explanatory. hobbes is defining philosophical as cause and effect and the study of them.
”the science of things evidently deduced from the first principles” -descartes
descartes is defining philosophy as the study of things that originate from the divine, often being the first things to thought to have been conceived. many of these first principles revolve around the elements.
”the science of truths, sensible and abstract” - de condillac
here, we have it defined as the study of truth. this truth can be logical or reasonable, like how nature works or it’s components, or even how the soul was created. anything that could be deduced to be a truth.
philosophy is often categorized under six generalized headings which may be broken down further.
the first topic falling under philosophy is metaphysics. this is what is often associated with the study, as it is dealing with abstract, unknown topics, and things outside of the reach of human knowledge.
next is logic. logic is what helps to keep philosophy balanced in its ideas and keeps insane ideas that make no sense being thrown out. these laws that govern our rational thinking are often referred to as the “doctrine of fallacies”.
ethics is the science of morality, individual responsibility, and character. this is where philosophy begins to sink into good vs evil, what is morally incorrect, etc. ethics is concerned primarily with the nature of being good.
psychology is the study of mental phenomena.
epistemology is the science of the nature of knowledge and the question is whether it exists in an “absolute form”.
asthetics is the science of the nature of and the reactions that are “awakened” by beauty.
the ideal function of philosophy is to serve as the stabilizing influence in human thought.
there are many schools of philosophy, although few are known to the common public. the ionic school was founded by thales who believed the primal element to be water and the earth to float upon it. he died in 546 b.c., passing the school onto his student, anaximander. he believed infinity made up all things. his successor, anaximenes, asserted air to be the first element of the universe, thinking even the god(s) were made of it. archelaus, another member of the ionic school, thought all things to be twofold. mind and air, resulting in fire and water. heraclitus, who is sometimes grouped with the ionic school, believed the primal element of the world to be fire, and that the world would eventually be consumed back into flame.
pythagoras of samos founded the pythagorean school. he thought math to be sacred. anyone who came to learn from pythagoras was to learn arthimetic, music, astronomy, and geometry. he was among the first to establish a community where everyone was of equal use. archytas, a member of the pythagorean school, is credited with the invention of the screw and the crane. he declared pleasure as a disease, and believed that a man who does no deceive is “as rare as a fish without bones”.
the eleatic sect was founded by xenophanes. he believed all things to be eternal, and thought the world to have no beginning and no end. to him, everything could be corrupted. leucippus said the universe to be one part full, and one part vacuum. democritus agreed with this atomic theory, but expanded upon it with his own thought. he said the principle of all things was atoms and vacuum. he believed the soul was an atomic structure and could die with our bodies. he thought the mind to be made of spiritual atoms.
cryptids
a cryptid is defined as an animal that has been claimed to exist, but we have no proof of.
the australian big cat (briagolong tiger, jamberoo tiger, kingstown killer, nightgrowler, tanjil terror, etc.) they are said to be nocturnal animals, even becoming louder with their growls/shrieks during the night. they are reported to be i afraid of both humans and cars, although they mainly prey on sheep by beheading them. there are many possible sightings of this cat, although physical descriptions vary. sightings began in 1909 when a large, black cat was sighted in the hills around jamberoo, new south wales. in the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s, a big cat that could allegedly eat an adult sheep in one sitting was investigated near briagolong, victoria. in emmaville, new south wales, there was a large, black cat reported multiple times. in 1956-1957, 340 sheep were killed on a single ranch. the case was declared solved on at least two occasions, but the tales continued on. in the late-1960s, early-1970s, and mid-1990s there were resurgences of sightings of the panther-like creature. in cordering, western australia, there was a report of a large cat that could kill sheep with “surgical precision”. many of them had their skin peeled back and the meat taken of their bones. kangaroos were also found with fatal puncture wounds.
bar-manu is a creature of central asia. it is described as very muscular, and covered with dark hair. it has short, guttural cries, but does not speak. it’s behavior describes it as an omnivore. their tracks are human like with the feet facing inward. in in the hindu kush range in 1977, purdum khan watched one of these creatures. he described it to eat leaves and ant-larvae.
basilisk is a creature of europe and north africa. it is described as anywhere 12 inches to 20 feet in length with a bright white spot upon its head. it later came to be described as a bird sporting a rooster’s comb and a snake’s tail. it’s described as moving with its middle portion up. the basilisk is said to be born from a cock’s egg that is hatched by a toad or snake. in roman temples, its skin was used to protect from spiders, snakes, and birds, as it was thought to deter them. if a basilisk were to see it’s own reflection, it would cause the creature’s death. in italy (1212), a basilisk was said to have killed many people until pope leo iv destroyed it with a prayer. this same year another was thought to be found in a well. in 1587, two polish children were killed by what was thought to be a basilisk. they were found dead in the cellar by a servant.
demonology
everyone knows the idea of a demon’s name holding power. in the catholic rite of exorcism (roman ritual), the name of a demon is important. this importance comes from the gospel of mark and the gospel of luke. when jesus was confronted by a possessed man, he requests the name of the demon before exorcising it, which implies that the name of the demon has power over it. in fact, this idea goes back to ancient belief from babylon, sumer, and akkad. names of demons and devils are thought to act as a beacon, calling them to our world when their names are said. this idea is actually a large reason there are many nicknames for satan. in the middle ages in europe, they began to come up with names like old nick or old scratch, hoping this would give the the devil less power over their life. many demons are presented as fallen angels, meaning they keep the usual suffix for angelic names like -ael or -iel.
a large impact on european concept of demons comes from the testament of solomon. this book presents demons as a force that torments humanity with death, disaster, and disease, as well as showing them being compelled or bound by their names. the testament of solomon also introduces demons to be fallen angels or the children of said angels after they had come to earth. this knowledge was already present in many pagan religions, but it became relevant to christians with its introduction to the bible.
grimoires
grimoires are books of magick. their name derives from the old french word “grammaire”, which refers to all the books written in latin, but the term began to be used for books of magick specifically sometime around the 18th century.
these books have been viewed as possessing an incredible amount of power, and only those properly initiated into the mysteries were meant to read them. many early grimoires detail demons, angels, elemental spirits, and other beings.
many early grimoires are devoted to summoning and controlling demons. the spells in these grimoires are said to read similar to latin priestly orientations. this is due to the fact that many of the traditions in these grimoires were practiced by members of the clergy. members of the clergy were often the only ones with the literary abilities to read, write, or copy these texts.
despite members of the clergy practicing with demonic magick, western europe was being swept up in the persecution of witches. with the mania at the time, these texts detailing demons became known to be associated with witchcraft and satan.
the demonology of western europe came forth from many key sources like the bible, the qabbalah, hellenic magick (curse tablets, magical papyri, etc.), and the mythology of ancient middle east.
demonic possession likely comes from ancient sumerian ideas of demons of illness inhabiting the human body to cause disease.
egregores
an egregore is “a psychic entity composed of and influencing the thoughts of groups of people”. while this is a common meaning of the word today, there is an older meaning to it. in ancient practices, egregores were a home or conduit for psychic intelligence of a non-human nature. they were essentially defined as non-human humans. they connect the world we live in with the invisible world. for the word derives from the greek word égrégoros, which means “wakeful” or “watcher”. godwin believed these creatures to be originated from ancient greece and rome. their daily practices and lifestyles were focused towards preserving the harmony between the invisible world and the material world. an important factor is that egregores are created and sustained from belief, ritual, and sacrifice. egregores were formed to protect over important areas to the greeks and romans. as long as offerings and devotions continued to these beings, they would protect and serve those who served them. when new cults came into being and the energy of worship was directed elsewhere, however, the agreement is broken and the egregore will stop protecting the specified land and its people.
