This is the first book I bought with my own money: #SOLARSYSTEM by Nigel Hey. It's literally held together by scotch tape, and for good reason: it changed my world. I was already in love with astronomy and physics (biology would come later) -- whenever my mom would take me to @barnesandnoble, I would practically sprint to the science section in the back, in front of the children's section. I would stay there for hours, just sitting and reading book after book. I'm pretty sure this was the first big purchase I ever made. I remember saying that it was the best thirty dollars I'd ever spend. A wild amount of money, but man, this book came everywhere with me, and it still does: every time I've moved, this book has come with me. My science collection has grown a lot since I bought this gem, but not enough. I want to keep it growing; somewhere along the way, I lost my lust for it to depression, but this year, I'm getting my physics back. Twist of Fate: Anathema is a visual novel by Meishali and Merriweather, and is currently under development. Each week, we talk a bit about our experiences as newbie gamedevs, as well as the game’s general feel and features.

Today, Meishali will discuss a BIG portion of lore! The main character of TOF:A is referred to as “The Runereader”, a scholar capable of... Well, Runereading. But what exactly is Runereading?

LOREBUILDING: The Origins of Runereading

When Merriweather and I decided Anathema would stop being a meme, and become a real thing, we had to expand on the main’s character field of expertise. The premise of the series was simple: an expert is brought to the castle to set things straight by deciphering an ancient tablet. You are that expert.

Originally, the main character could “speak a dead tongue”.

Runereading, in the World, and not just the Kingdom of Mana (current setting), is a subclass of Reading. Reading with a capital R, albeit mystical and magical in nature, is seen as a science by the people of Mana, but not all over the world. Some nations live by it (like Mana), and some nations are better without it (like Laneare, which we’ll discuss later, surely in another entry).

As Act of Divination

Reading is a form of divination, meaning you can read to learn about the past, the future, or potential futures. The list of things that can be read in the world of TOF:A currently are, but not limited to: Stars (Astromancy), Water (Aquamancy), Fire (Pyromancy), Crystals & Soil (Geomancy), Runes & Glyphs on ancient man-made items (Runereading), and more.

Reading also includes the act of archiving, or telling. After discovering a potential future, Readers tend to get an urge to transcribe it, or share it with their peers. It is a divine impulse of sorts, that can be mastered over the years. Though in some countries, delivering what has been read became mandatory. Ordained readers lying to the people they’re supposed to serve often end up beheaded, or punished. It is the case for Mana, where the story takes place.

A Pursuit, A Science

Reading requires the character practicing it to be knowledgeable about the world around them. A pyromancer will, for instance, study the scientific properties of fire to eliminate them when they initiate a Reading. It allows the Reader to see past physical boundaries. In the world of Anathema, beyond the physical, there is the mystical, and the mystical can only be seen once the physical has been discarded. To do that, you should be able to tell what’s physical. Simple enough!

A trained Reader can tell what are natural occurrences and what just aren’t, and those unnatural occurrences are usually messages left by past happenings (a part of the “soil” witnessed a gruesome death, calling for a geomancer), or by the Gods themselves (they wish to communicate with mortals, and leave messages about).

Readers are often scientists/inventors as a result. The reason why most either dedicate their life to the craft or simply don’t, no inbetween, is because Reading can not be a hobby. With Reading comes a couple of perks, namely remembering written texts or images better, having a better eyesight, etc. Deciphering messages also becomes easier, if not easiest if you have considerable experience! Sadly, these perks are maintained through the regular act of Reading. Should the Reader take long breaks, or stop for many years, it’ll be harder to get back to it, messages will not be as clear, if not perfectly illegible.

A decent Reader can usually be formed in six or ten years. Youngest initiations start around 5-6 years old.

The Place of Readers in Society

Readers often serve as spiritual guides, priests, shamans, scholars. In some nations, they are also Kings, or considered nobility. In others, Reading is seen as malicious, and an act of heresy— All nations and countries have all sorts of type of Readers and Readings, and customs or taboos tied to them.

Mana’s core type of Reading would be Runereading, even if it was not always so. As its name states, it is a type of Reading done by identifying runes, or glyphs, or coded work. The House of Whiteleaf, the one the Main Character comes from, specializes both in Astromancy and Runereading, with a favor for the latter.

Runereading, unlike other forms of Readings who usually take a basis in nature, are inherent to man: Runereading can only be done on man made supports, such as tablets, walls, maps, etc. It is the act of reading past prophecies, or deciphering past readings that have been archived a long time ago. As a result, the type of ‘science’ attached to it would be to study world history and cultures around the world, as well as the history of reading.

More can be said about Runereading: while other readings draw from nature, and are a direct contact with the divine, Runereading, is instead, putting you in contact with other people, who very, very often have already passed away.

Runereading isn’t simply deciphering ancient, coded languages. It is also direct communication with the dead, should you happen to be a Reader of talent. Some nations foreign to Mana call it Necromancy, as they should: but the Kingdom finds it to be quite a morbid term, and dismisses it whenever possible.

Runereading, also has its own type of archiving. Runereaders are taught how to design their own runes and languages for future Runereaders to decipher, a way to learn about history while practicing their Reading skills.

It is to note that lies and slander can not be recorded by using the sacred art of archiving. Albeit a generally forbidden practice, past Runereaders in Mana have been used to make sure prisoners were not lying, by trying to record their testimonies using archiving rites. If the support or tool used to write broke, it meant that the testimony was false. It is also a good way to see if a character rumored dead is still alive, though the Runereader must be of a considerable skill to make it work.
