Le changement climatique pourrait devenir le principal facteur de déclin de la biodiversité d'ici le milieu du siècle

Selon la vaste étude multi-modèle publiée dans Sience le 26 avril, la biodiversité mondiale pourrait avoir diminué de 2 % à 11 % au cours du 20e siècle en raison du changement d'occupation des sols induit par l'Homme. Les projections montrent que le changement climatique pourrait devenir le principal facteur de déclin de la biodiversité d'ici le milieu du 21e siècle.

  Publié le 25/04/2024 "Dirigée par le German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) et la Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), cette analyse est la plus grande étude de modélisation de la biodiversité et des services écosystémiques de ce type à ce jour. Les chercheurs ont comparé pas moins de treize modèles pour évaluer l'impact du changement d'occupation des sols et du changement climatique sur quatre métriques distinctes de la biodiversité, ainsi que sur neuf services écosystémiques. Nicolas Titeux, responsable de l’Observatory for Climate, Environment and Biodiversity du LIST, a joué un rôle actif dans cette recherche novatrice, qui appelle à de nouveaux efforts politiques pour atteindre les objectifs internationaux en matière de biodiversité. Il a apporté ses connaissances sur les rôles relatifs des facteurs directs du changement de la biodiversité et sur la manière dont ils sont intégrés dans les modèles à grande échelle. Il a également veillé à ce que les résultats de cette collaboration internationale soient pris en compte dans le rapport d'évaluation mondiale de la plateforme intergouvernementale sur la biodiversité et les services écosystémiques (IPBES)."

La recherche du miel sauvage est une entreprise délicate : les nids d’abeilles sont bien cachés et leurs habitantes essaiment et piquent pour se défendre. Mais dans le cadre d’une collaboration rare et millénaire, des chasseurs de miel en Afrique reçoivent l’aide d’un petit oiseau brun appelé « grand indicateur » pour trouver les ruches. L’oiseau guide le chasseur de miel jusqu’au nid, généralement dissimulé dans les branches ou le creux d’un arbre, puis c'est au chasseur de miel d'intervenir pour maîtriser les abeilles avec de la fumée ou des outils et extraire le miel. En guise de récompense, le guide aviaire reçoit de la cire d’abeille, un élément central de son régime alimentaire.
