Jamie Stengle at AP:
IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Boy Scouts of America is changing its name for the first time in its 114-year history and will become Scouting America. It’s a significant shift as the organization emerges from bankruptcy following a flood of sexual abuse claims and seeks to focus on inclusion. The organization steeped in tradition has made seismic changes after decades of turmoil, from finally allowing gay youth to welcoming girls throughout its ranks. With an eye on increasing flagging membership numbers, the Irving, Texas-based organization announced the name change Tuesday at its annual meeting in Florida.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” Roger Krone, who took over last fall as president and chief executive officer, said in an interview before the announcement. The organization began allowing gay youth in 2013 and ended a blanket ban on gay adult leaders in 2015. In 2017, it made the historic announcement that girls would be accepted as Cub Scouts as of 2018 and into the flagship Boy Scout program — renamed Scouts BSA — in 2019. There were nearly 1,000 young women in the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in 2021, including Selby Chipman. The all-girls troop she was a founding member of in her hometown of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, has grown from five girls to nearly 50, and she thinks the name change will encourage even more girls to realize they can join.
For the first time in the 114-year history of the Boy Scouts of America's history, the name will become Scouting America. This comes on the heels of a decade-plus worth of changes to inclusion in the BSA.

Know what Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America) says that any uniform piece that has been approved as a uniform piece can continue being worn as a uniform piece even if they don't produce it anymore (probably meant so that lower-income troops don't have to empty their coffers getting Class A's for everybody every few years)
Anyways I think that means I could totally wear a Skort with the knee-high socks and a slightly-tilted beret at a scout event and argue that it's all official uniform pieces. There's probably even a really slutty version of the neckerchief if I look hard enough. I could absolutely SLAY next time the troop goes up to summer camp.

i know scouts BSA isn't super popular right now, but I just want to say to people working on their Eagle projects that go get it done. Turn in your paperwork. Write the report. ask someone for a letter of recommendation. get someone to sign it. Getting your eagle is totally worth it, and you will have so many more opportunities if you get it. if getting hired comes down between you and another person, and you have the eagle award, your much more likely to get it.

"BOY SCOUTS ENJOY VISIT TO FLEET.
Copyright by Underwood & Underwood, K.Y.
The 51st Battalion of the United States Boy Scouts visited the Atlantic fleet, May 15th and captured the hearts of the old mariners aboard the U.S.S. New York. They delighted all who saw by their fine drilling on ducks, and later made jolly on top of the big guns of the ship."

"It dwarfs the Catholic Church sex scandal by victim count, and establishes the Boy Scouts of America as the largest pedophile organization in human history." - Steve Schmidt
I guess I was lucky -- I went through Scouting and the church without anybody diddling me.
I learned a great deal from the Scouts. Not so much from the church.

I've seen some news articles and comments on them getting upset about how Boy Scouts is changing its name to Scouts. They say theres no safe space for boys anymore.
Girls. Have. Been. Welcomed. For. Years. Now! And its great that they are!
I worked at a cub scout camp at the time when girls were first allowed and it was nothing but a positive experience. Boys and girls were happy to play and work together. I didn't hear even a single offhand complaint.
One of the most powerful moments in my 6 years of working there was that we had a mom nearly cry because she was so happy she could bring her daughter to camp. She lived in a family of all eagle scouts. She'd gone to every meeting and camp out but had never been allowed to participate or be aknowlege for her work. She was so happy her daughter got the opportunity she hadn't
And honestly, same girl. I grew up with a single mom, so where my brother went, I went because I couldn't be left home alone. I went to SO many meetings, but i was never allowed to earn badges, shoot bow and arrows, or race pinewood derbies. No, Girl scouts is not the same. (It can be very good, but its far less structured, so many troops are lack luster.) Even though I was past the age to join, girls being able to join scouts meant so much to me too.
But like seriously, other countries have been co-ed for a long long time now. Its about time we caught up.
