Shoutout to any long-time visitors of the ScrollBoss site who get why this Golden Axe tribute is the first new pixel art I'm posting this year. The violence inherent in the system never seems to end...
I so love these horror/video game mash-ups!!!! And I must say, this is quite a kick-ass roster - full of iconic horror characters...
First Row: Carrie White (Carrie) and Michael Myers/The Shape (Halloween)
Second Row: Candyman (Candyman), Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street), and Horace Pinker (Shocker)
Third Row: Dr. Herbert West (Re-Animator), Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Elvira (Elvira’s Movie Macabre), and Ashley James “Ash” Williams (The Evil Dead)
Fourth Row: Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray (Child’s Play), Tarman (Return of the Living Dead), Tall Man (Phantasm), and the Lead Cenobite/”Pinhead” (Hellraiser)

It’s a Taito collection this August, with four new shrines live on the site!
VIOLENCE FIGHT: As per the norm of 80s fighting games, Violence Fight has the basics of button mashing with elements of sidescrolling brawlers and Double Dragon’s button layout. Four playable characters, each with specialized areas of attack, must duke out in an underground fighting arena, eventually facing off against tigers as bonus rounds and two hidden boss characters. As a similar nod to DD, the final battle is against the player character’s “brother”, essentially making it a mirror match. While the game boasts huge sprites, hitboxes can be awkward and controls are stiff at times, though the violent comic book sound effects in huge letters are quite a nice touch.
KAISER KNUCKLE: Taito’s step up in the 2D fighting foray is Global Champion, pitting 9 international fighters, each with their own unique specials and an elemental affinity. Power attacks are key to crashing your opponent against the barricades, sending them to a fiery or electrical doom. After defeating the other fighters, you must battle 2 semifinal bosses with unorthodox fighting styles, culminating with a final boss showdown in the depths of outerspace! While Global Champion had its share of bizarre and colorful characters, the names Kazuya and Wulong would eventually be overshadowed by similarly named characters from a different fighting game franchise.
PSYCHIC FORCE: Delving into the 3D fighting arena, Psychic Force follows the story of ESPers, psychics born with unnatural abilities and command of various elements as they are persecuted by humans and the government, seeking them as experimental supersoldiers. Two factions arise from the ensuing chaos: the rebel psychic group NOAH who wage war against humans, and another that seeks peace between humans and ESPers by battling NOAH’s extremist utopian ideals. Amidst the war, the humans have their own arsenal to hunt down the psychics. And now, the mutants psychics engage in a raging aerial battlefield mankind has never seen.
OPERATION THUNDERBOLT: A much more solid sequel to the arcade smash Operation Wolf, now with 2-player coop! Join Op. Wolf vet Roy Adams and his new partner Hardy Jones in the depths of a radical group’s outpost who have captured a plane of American passengers. The mere concept of the arcade intro’s plot is rather direct to the point and rather harsh to look back on. Operation Thunderbolt also adds more special items to aid Adams and Jones in their goal to rescue the hostages, along with a decisive shoot-out at the end of your mission. Interestingly, Taito’s early Wolf series can be seen as precursive inspirations for SNK’s own SMG shoot-em-ups in the late 80s.
Enjoy the new shrines and C&C are very much appreciated. Next month, IGS fighting game collection!
Special thanks to @scrollboss’ Taito mini-icon and @kazucrash‘s Kazuya intro!
It’s amazing to see our heroes pixeled in beat-em-up scale by the incomparable @scrollboss! In a henceforth unforeseen future in which Rumblecade is slathered with cash, a proper side brawler ala Final Fight / Streets of Rage would most definitely make us all very happy. Until then, dream big :-)
And be sure to check out @scrollboss‘ multitude of awesome pixel art fighters!
My prints from @illscroll (@illmosis/@scrollboss on Twitter) came in and I totally love them. #Flapjack & #Aquaman, #TheBraveAndTheBold. #FreddyVsJason, #HorrorMovies #FightingGames #PixelArt.
L to R: Revival Dead 2, the Toxic Avenger, Shaft (Castlevania), Mirror Rick (Splatterhouse), Ghost of Shaft (Castlevania), Freddy Krueger, Licker (Resident Evil)
These sprites were added to the image galleries and image generators (where I made the pic in this post)
I used Scrollboss' graphics generator to set up a battle between the Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti version of Rick and Biggy Man while I waited for my dinner to cook.
ScrollBoss, an action-adventure video game appreciation site. Most of the content is unaltered graphics from the original games. There are a few edited sprites here. Custom Sprites:
The Newness is Assembled! Celebrating the Avengers 60th Anniversary with new pixel art of Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Black Knight, the Vision, and the Mighty Thor! But the heroes aren't alone... Kang the Conqueror, the Mandarin, and Baron Zemo get new sprites, too! All that and more in today's ScrollBoss site update:
I haven’t been here in a while, but the ScrollBoss site kept chugging along and I just finished this year’s DangerTerrorHorrorThon updates (just like the last post i made here 4 years ago). As always, adding a bunch of monster and horror-themed sprites to the custom sprite galleries and image generators!
Five brand-new scratch-made portraits in the Street Fighter Alpha 3 style (reaching for the star that is Bengus’ style in that game): Captain Commando, Hugo Andore, Harley Quinn, Black Widow, and Spider-Man! Added to the ScrollBoss site’s portrait gallery and image generators. That and more news here:
A new batch of scratch-made Street Fighter Alpha 3 Vs. portraits will hit the ScrollBoss site tomorrow, but I made a quick demo video with some older portraits I've made.
I have a gallery page on my site just for the ones I’ve made so far: ScrollBoss - SFA3 Custom Portraits
