Pinot From Paso: World’s shortest book. And this has to be the least expensive of the half-dozen offerings from that region: most–if not ALL of them–hailing from the cooler, more coastal-influenced West-side of the valley. But this is still Templeton Gap, and I’ve often said, God doesn’t recognize the 101–or its exuberant price-padding. At 6, this hard-shouldered, screen-print screw-top charmer…

Got our Mexican food 😋 Felt like we were being fed in the owner’s home. She gave us the most welcoming service with Mama cooking in the back. A little guy who comes in every day for his rice and beans (checks to be sure the order is right at the door) was treated as their own.

Stopped at an art gallery in Paso. Their sculptures are spectacular ~ it felt like a museum. We talked with one of the three artists and he sent us out to the Sculpterra Winery to see more of their work. Sculpters at the winery include Dale Evans, John Jagger (mentor of Dale) and Bob Bentley. We WISH we’d had the time to do a tasting after the sculpture walk. Next time; hopefully with George and Ann.

Justin arranged for us to have a private tour and tasting at J Lohr. Jasmine was such a perfect host. We heard a new take on the grape growing and wine making process. And, did a bit of barrel tasting!
Jerry Lohr (87 and going strong) is considered one of the grandfathers of Paso Robles wines. He has a PhD from Stanford in structural engineering and does it ever show in his approach to wine making.
They do everything they can to pass along savings to their customers, including producing their own yeast, maximizing efficiency in the fields and maintaining the price of their premium wines (including their Lohr Cuvée Series at $50 a bottle ~ since 2002!)
They are a sustainable business. Jerry is an avid proponent of water conservation. They use 1.5 gallons of water for every gallon of wine produced and ensure their grape suppliers follow their practices. Industry standard is 5 gallons of water; 3 gallons is considered exceptional. They also compost vineyard bi-products.
Jerry continues to shepherd sustainability practices and fine winemaking thru his work on boards and organizations in Paso Robles, Monterey and Napa.

We are MAJOR fans of Jerry and the people of J Lohr! Aaron will proudly wear his new cap.

My Hero Academia OC
Hero Name: Sculpterra
Name: Shiori Yamashita
Rank: Second Year (Class 2B)
Birthday: November 21
Height: 5’7” / 170 cm
Quirk: Golem - Emitter-type Quirk.
- Can manipulate sculptures she makes out of clay (other materials come later). These “golems” she makes can only follow super simple commands, but she can put her consciousness into a single golem and manipulate it as if it was her own body.
- Drawbacks: Overuse of her quirk causes her extreme mental fatigue and her skin starts to become hard like stone. When connected to the golem she can see though it, but her real body is left unconscious and starts to slowly solidify and become stone like. Being connected to her stronger golems speeds up the solidifying. Number of golems active varies with size.
Power: B
Speed: C
Range: A
Endurance: B
Precision: C
Utility: A
Development: B
Extra:
- Long dark brown hair, brown eyes, resting bitch face
- the quietest one in the class unless there’s a topic she knows a lot about, then you can’t shut her up
- Falls asleep a lot
- Trying to learn to trust people and get over her shyness
- Artsy
- Wears comfy sweaters and headbands to keep her hair out of her face when she’s sculpting
- Hero costume has a fireproof backpack that keeps clay moist with tubes that spray the clay with water every so often
- Puts a little pocket of ceramic glaze in her golems so that, if she’s fighting a fire- or explosion-based Quirk, or if there’s fire in the area, the glaze will coat the golem’s body and, under the intense heat, strengthen its defenses
- At first she tries not to possess her golems so she won’t pass out, then she does possess but she hides herself so she’s not troubling anyone else, but she has to learn to accept help from her teammates, letting them protect her
- doesn’t want to be a pro hero like her classmates, actually wants to be a sidekick because she thinks that kind of career might be less pressure
- wields a garrote as a makeshift weapon

Thank you Jesus for our food.
I opened a Primitivo today in honor of #nationalzinfandelday for a couple reasons: First of all because it’s a fake #influencer holiday and I purposely never open the *proper* wines on those days but more importantly in honor of the 80’s and early 90’s when we were told it was the original Zinfandel and a lot of us believed it–and many still do. That and I don’t really have any zinfandel in my…

Freshen up 2020 with Paso’s Brightest Bottles
Out with the old, in with the new—bottles, that is! The New Year isn’t just about making (and breaking) nagging good-for-you resolutions (eat less carbs; do more cardio), it’s also about hitting “refresh” on your entire life. Perhaps you’ll buy those fabulous new shoes, start an exciting new job or take on that stimulating creative project that’s been kicking around your imagination for far too long. When it comes to wine, shake up the routine and live a little! Go for these bright new bottles, courtesy of Paso Robles Wine Country’s best wineries. You’ll feel renewed in body and spirit. Cheers to the new you.
1. 2017 Either Side of the Hill – Paix Sur Terre
Crafted from some of the best Syrah vines planted at Glenrose Vinyard 26 years ago, this totally enlightened offering is elegant, ethereal, and an absolute pleasure to sip with new friends. With an artistic label showcasing the stunning work of mixed media artist Jonathan Blythe, this extremely drinkable bottle will make for an excellent conversation starter (and if not completely consumed you’ll want to put it in your fridge to slow down its oxidation….it will look lovely in your new wine fridge). Wait, you didn’t buy yourself a new wine fridge over the holidays? Better get on that.

2. 2017 Picpoul Blanc – Rails Nap
Get back to a state of balance. A firm mouthfeel and dry finish make this acid driven, white variety from the South of France a great accompaniment to light, healthy options like Chinese chicken salad, sautéed fish, calamari, and raw oysters—all of which you should eat more of in the New Year. Allow the beautiful aromas of apple blossoms and citrus to wash away any negative juju leftover from 2019. Why burn sage when you can sip instead?

3. 2016 Mega Focus – Scuplterra Winery
Who doesn’t want more focus in 2020? It takes two hours to decant, but we promise—it’s worth the wait! Zero in on this ravishing red, which displays mesmerizingly pure aromas of raspberry, dried herbs, cherry, cigar box and pepper. The wine is fresh, the flavors are refined, and the finish is long. Perhaps you’ll even quit multitasking and start savoring one thing at a time.

4. 2017 Pinot Noir Rosé – Hoyt Vineyards
Say farewell to winter woes and look forward to the first blush of spring (even if it’s farther off than we’d really like to admit). This sophisticated, complex rosé crafted from estate grown pinot noir perks up the senses with strawberry-citrus joy. Sun-drenched picnics and blooming wildflowers will be here before you know it. Be prepared and pick up a case!

5. 2017 Mr. Nibbles – Chronic Cellars
A nimble wine that leaps into the New Year with notes of lush raspberry, plum, black cherry, leather and vanilla, “Mr. Nibbles” is more robust than its name suggests. Mediums tannins lead to a lasting finish of bold red fruit flavors, perhaps foreshadowing what’s to come in 2020. We like the taste of that.

Week 100: Friday, September 3rd, we saw Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio, 4380 Highway 46 East, Paso Robles, with live music and a beautiful field of lights in the twilight. We stayed at La Quinta Inn, 2615 Buena Vista Dr. Then on Saturday, September 4th, we explored Paso Robles with a visit to the playground in Downtown City Park, Spring St & 12th St, tacos from the Huatulco Tacos Food Truck, and a drive down Vineyard Drive while the kids napped. Afterwards we went to Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden, 5015 Linne Rd, and had fun playing foosball, watching bocce ball, and exploring the vineyard. Then we got dinner from Marv's Pizza, 729 12th St.
