Send in an ask with the name of a Mega Man character that I don’t have as a muse, and I’ll try to talk about how I’d characterize them! Classic and MMX only! (Still accepting!)

((I'd like to give every character their rightful spotlight, so I'll just be focusing on Shadow.))

((Which in all honesty is easier said than done, since there are like six Shadows here, and all of them are genuinely incredible. It's additionally challenging for me because my Shadow.. wouldn't be canon to my verse, since that is @wearewilynumbers' Shadow. That's a little confusing, lol

The first thing that comes to mind is that my Shadow would be incredibly quiet. The thing about the Thirds is that they only had the Seconds to really model off of in terms of personality, and while some of them ended up developing greater extremes to their personalities (Gemini and Top come to mind), the others didn't. Mags takes after Air, Hard takes after Crash, Needle takes somewhat after Metal, Spark is a more ditzy, less aggressive Heat, and so on and so forth. There isn't a one-to-one way to compare the Seconds to the Thirds, but you can point to one of the Thirds and recognize which Second they picked up whatever trait from. Shadow happens to be like Quick.

I don't mean this in the emotionless way, because as we know, Shadow is VERY emotional, to the point where I think it becomes a topic of insecurity for him due to the ideal he believes he should achieve, but rather in the quiet and observational way, hanging back rather than participating in things much with his brothers. Quick is the epitome of the strong, silent killer, and that's something that Shadow is supposed to be as well. And he is! Except for when a certain prototype pisses him off. Another aspect of the Thirds is that they're far more emotionally competent than the Seconds are on a general level, and Shadow is no exception. Which, I think, means he struggles a bit with balancing that ideal of being an emotionless Second with his inherent pack mentality as a Third. As the years progress and he finds himself appreciating his linemates' company more and also becoming more experienced as a Robot Master, I do think he gets better at this, but he will always remain a dork. Unfortunately, Shadow inherited some of the worst of the trademark Wilybot pride, like Quick, and while he isn't aggressive with it like one certain SWN, I don't think there is really much of a match for Shadow in terms of pride until Forte comes along.

Also, is Shadow an alien? I'm inclined to say no. Is he made from alien tech? ...Also no, actually. I do think he was later enhanced with the technology that Wily successfully stole off of the asteroid, though, which perfected his abilities. Wily was the only one who was capable of building a teleporter, and I like to think he built off of his success with Flash and Quick to develop Shadow as well, since shadows are an absence of light and manipulating the speed of light also impacts the distance that light travels in a given amount of time. Hence, Shadow moves through shadows not because he's manipulating a 'shadow dimension,' so much as he's warping distance through manipulating properties of light. Lightyears, and all that. His ability is moreso related to space than it is time itself for this reason too. Funnily enough, Mags was a prototype for the teleporters as well, due to being able to manipulate electromagnetic waves, which light is made of. You can think of it as Flash and Quick being Wily's experiments with time, whereas the Thirds (Mags, Shadow, Gemini) being his experiments with space and light/electromagnetic waves. This is later expanded upon with the manipulation of mass and gravity through Gravity and Star. But I digress.

Now for the age old question I'm sure everyone is curious about: does Shadow love Blues?

You might expect me to say yes.

And the answer is in fact yes LMAO I can't not ship them AJFJSKFJDG

Shadow feels very, very strongly for Blues, and no he has no idea what it means until he actually like. Sees someone else (like Mags I guess) in love. And from there, it's pretty standard. He panics because 'woe is me my wounded pride' and then eventually grows a pair of balls BUT IM NOT HERE TO TALK ABOUT SHADOWBLUES I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE DORK.

He definitely is someone who struggled to become his own person, I think, out of his desire to emulate Quick and also be with his siblings and also serve Wily and also just. exist. The year or two he spent away from Wily was absolutely invaluable to him, and I like to think he returned with a surer mind than ever, not to obey Wily's every command, but to realize a world where machine was no longer shackled by man. And, if such a future was possible, where man and machine could truly coexist.

Who are your top 8 Robot Masters? (Of the Mega Man variety)

OOOOOH I LOVE THIS QUESTION! FUCK! It's hard to choose just eight and yet eight seems like so many!

1. Skullman. The Megamix/Gigamix comics are what got me into Megaman and Skullman's story in particular is what really hooked me and made me fall in love.

2. Toadman! He's fukcin froggy.

3. Snakeman. Writing my interpretation of him just unlocks something in me and it brings me immense joy. Plus he's snek.

4. Shadowman. Another really cool character, triple threat who gets unique stories in Super Adventure Rockman, Megamix comics, and the Archie comics.

5. Shademan. He's the favorite Robot Master of my friend who got me into Megaman in the first place and showed me all these wonderful comics, so he's got a huge soft spot in my heart. Plus, shipping him with Skullman (and sometimes Shadowman!) is my shiiiiiit.

6. Heatman! I love this dude. He's such a rectangular unit. He's short. He's HOT.

7. Tundraman. What a cool dude! I keep thinking he'd be fun to cosplay.

8. Hornetman. I've always found his development journey to be an interesting one, the way he was originally planned to be "Honeywoman". I've always wanted to play with that and conceptualize it into my stories, usually by the way of Dr. Wily figuring out how to help him transition.

But of course, there's so many Robot Masters that I like without much deep meaning too. It's hard not to like most of them? Like, they're just so charmingly simple in design. My favorite "set" is probably the Cossack bots, most likely because of the Ariga comic once again. They're the only Robot Master set that I really view as a family in the sense that they're all brothers. (I simply don't view Wily bots as familial at all with each other and the only Light bots I understand as siblings are Rock, Roll, and Blues.) For me, a fun aspect about Megaman is actually how flexible you can get with interpreting the characters, because honestly the canon of the games gives us SUCH little to work with. Most of these guys get a like, a dislike, and their function, which means you can fill in the gaps with a lot of stuff.

Toadman, for example, is a character I've seen wildly different interpretations of and I've loved each one. They all make sense, even if they are vastly different. Somewhere, Toadman is described as "tone-deaf". One interpretation I've seen of this is that Toadman is a dancer at heart who doesn't care who's watching or about the rhythm of any drum. This can be backed up by the fact in game that his attack is literally just him dancing. This understanding of the character takes him as a free spirit that will dance no matter the occasion, tone-deaf as in lacking a certain situational awareness. Meanwhile, another interpretation of him that I've seen is that he is hard-of-hearing. This plays into the fact that he has no ears nor indication in his design that he can pick up audial cues. He's a toad or frog, after all. Particularly high pitched noises, he cannot pick up on... Ergo, tone-deaf. Either way, both interpretations do seem to agree that he is not a fighter and is more pacifistic by nature, likely based off of the fact that he's considered one of the easiest boss fights in all of Megaman.

Are these exactly what Capcom meant with that description? Maybe? Maybe not? But I don't really care, I love these huge extrapolations. While I obviously don't want every fandom or media to work this way, I do think it's a very fun quirk about Classic Megaman in particular.
