As much as I hate Lorenzo somehow his involvement always leads to good/different Malec episodes. 3x02 and now 3x14 are two of my favourite episodes this season. I like that he’s against Magnus but still somehow reasonable. He isn’t out to kill him (on purpose) or destroy his relationship so it’s all very much about their warlock profession.

Magnus explaining that he needs magic was heartbreaking and it also has the great side effect that it evens out Alec constantly saying he would feel like nothing without the Parabatai bond. They both have that magical connection they need to feel like they matter.

The only thing I still miss is Alec taking stuff more personal? I love how protective he is but it always seems a little detached as if he’ll feel the same either way. I don’t want him to feel guilty but it would be normal to think about his own part, questioning if he made a mistake when he let Magnus go to Edom.

“ it’s okay, ” juliet knew that it wasn’t       it wasn’t okay, and it was never going to be okay. after having to kill innocent people that he didn’t even know, adrian suffered for centuries        how was he even going to survive from this ? juliet understood how important she was for the vampire       it might seem unbelievable at first. the 314 year old vampire, falling for the human. the mundane. the words sounded like someone took them from a fanfiction. but this was their reality. this was the most real thing juliet ever experienced, ever felt. and she knew that he felt the same. “ it’s not your fault       okay ? d - don’t do that to yourself again. ” the ginger’s hands gently caressed his cheek, in hopes of giving him some kind of reassurance. “ don’t hate yourself. don’t push people away. you deserve better than that. ” tears fell down from her cheeks       she felt so hopeless. so powerless. dying for someone you love was not that bad       but this ? knowing exactly what adrian would have to go through after this ? that was the bad part. leaving people that love you behind. juliet put the dagger in his shaky hands, forcing him to hold it tight. “ i love you, ” the three words escaped her lips for one last time as a whisper, “ i’ll always be with you. ” and then she pulled his hand that was holding the dagger to her chest. “ do it. ”it was fast.painless.the only painful thing she could sense, was the sorrow that came from his scream.

      “  you can’t expect me to be scared of you,  ”  juliet said as soon as she stepped into his apartment after using the keys adrian gave to her. it’s been days since adrian told her the truth     about everything. and went back to avoiding her.  “  i don’t care about it, okay ? you left me in suspense for days      it gave me some time to think. i don’t care about it.  ”  with each word, she took a step closer to the vampire. vampire      the word seemed so unusual in her mind, yet, vampire or not.. it was adrian. the adrian she was always going to see as a hero.   “  you’re what i care about,  ”  the words left the ginger’s lips as soon as she got close enough to touch him. hands caressed his cheek slowly      gently, like she could break him if she was too harsh. and without a second thought, her lips found his     he wasn’t cold like many would expect him to be. but he was exactly what juliet expected     warm. full of love. she could taste the love from his lips - and that was all that mattered. this moment, was all that mattered. not the monsters that lurked in the shadows, not downworlders, not shadowhunters, this.

         “  he didn’t deserve this,  ”  she didn’t cry this time. she could feel like her tears were finally drained.  “  he didn’t. you don’t - you don’t know him, like i do. he was good.  ”  the look in her eyes were empty as she looked at the wall in front of her, and she kept repeating the same words.  “  he deserved better. ”

Phoe’s Book Report - City of Bones, pages 309-388

Höh, considering I did like 20 pages things normally, well... The new semester started and my schedule is a fucking mess. I literally found a reading spot to waste time between classes. Well, at least I’m very much likely to finally finish this book at this rate.

We start this section by Jace and Clary... having a picnic in the greenhouse. And sharing their first kiss.

So yeah, that praise I gave in my first book report about the author at least taking it slow instead of "love at first sight” as the show did? Lemme just throw that shit out the window hard. The book rushes this even more than the show. How is this a thing considering they started off with mutual... “Not a fan of you, man”? That makes it - and the rushed romance - even more weird than if the book had gone with “Instantly, she knew he was special” kinda bs. Because in that case, I’d at least accept them kissing for the first time far before the first book even ends.

Also, just as a Jalec shipper who saw the hatred we shippers get for shipping them, I just have to point this one quote out, from page 314, where Clary asks Jace if he and Izzy ever dated:

“The answer is no. I mean, there may have been a time when one or the other of us considered it, but she’s almost a sister to me. It would be strange.”

He... literally considered dating Izzy in canon. (And oh he considered it. Otherwise he would have left it at a flat-out no and not tagged “may have” options on. Either you’re willing and curious to date your sister or you’re disgusted by the concept and don’t). Alec is in love with him in canon. How do... How do people give fans shit for doing the exact same thing as the original author does? How is it “disgusting incest” if fanfictions do it, even though it literally happens in the books...? How is that a thing that exists in this fandom?

Moving on before I slip into rage mode. I just really don’t understand that part of the fandom...

Now. Let’s move on to my favorite topic: Clary. Yay.

She forgot about Simon again. Honestly, if this was just me bitching about it, I’d say I’d exaggerate, but she herself points it out in canon. She continously brings our attention to the fact that she keeps forgetting her best friend exists.

I would really-really-really love to pick this author’s brain. I mean. It’s one thing writing a character as a bad person, but why would you continously bring attention to the fact that you made your main character a bad person? Or is this supposed to be the worst running gag in the history of running gags...? At this point, I genuinely can’t tell anymore.

Now, page 322 really fucked with me.

It’s in Jace’s POV. We have gone 321 pages in pure Clary POV and all of a sudden, this chapter begins in Jace’s POV. Which would be awesome and amazing and I’d celebrate it... if it had lasted more than two fucking pages. What. What even is this?

Look, I very rarely give praise to Riordan anymore, but he very clearly marked POV switches and evenly divided them through chapters. That’s a good and safe method to avoid confusion for the readers.

If you go 321 pages with one character’s POV and then, without much ado, switch to another character’s POV in a new chapter, that’s okay, but try keeping it up for at least the whole chapter, instead of literally mid-conversation switching back to Clary’s POV.

What... What was that? Were you testing if you can write Jace’s POV and then you chickened out and forgot to re-edit it back to all Clary when you realized you couldn’t pull through with this? It’s a mess, is what it is, girl.

Also, I have reached the point where I seriously question how much thought went into world-building here.

They are the New York Institute. They are in charge of all of New York. But... But for one, in the books it’s seriously just three teenagers and a guy on house arrest? At least the show has a shit-ton of Shadowhunters, which makes so much more sense. But the point I wanted to get to is, they are in charge of all of New York but they go everywhere by public transportation. What. The. Fuck. And I don’t care what any New Yorker has to say to me about this, this is bullshit. You don’t go to demon killing missions via the fucking subway.

One of them needs to have a fucking driver’s license. They need to have a car at the Institute. This is just fucking ridiculous.

And it brings me back to Clary. Her breaking Simon’s heart isn’t the issue, the friendzone is not some grand conspiracy that men deserve to be petted on the head for ending up in, but if you break your best friend’s heart because you can’t return his feelings, at least give him some fucking time to adjust, instead oif literally dragging the boy you kissed in front of him with you and asking your best friend to drive the two of you somewhere? Like? Ouch.

Not to mention, again I was starting to fear that I might slip into just hating on Clary on principle but then canon once again assured me that my accessment of her is right by having Hodge pull her aside and call her out on exactly that fucking behavior. It’s just... I... I can’t even.

Scene with not-Dorothea.

Makes me appreciate Jace as a character again. I swear, his snark and sarcasm are literally the best thing about this book and considering how different Clary and Isabelle are from their show-counterparts, I am so glad that my favorite, precious puppy is amazing in the book too. I swear, if the aurthor would make me feel about Jace as I am feeling about Clary in these books, I would fucking burn that book.

Also. Dorothea.

I am... really confused how the show literally just created an OC and slapped Dot’s name on it. I mean, Dot’s already killed off and she had nothing in common with her show-counterpart. She was older, not a warlock, not bffs with Jocelyn, hopefully not Magnus’ former lover. This is kinda weird. Like really weird.

Alec getting seriously hurt and Jace going “All I see is you, Clary and I totally forgot to have my parabatai’s back because all I care about is you, even though I fucking only know you for two weeks now or so.” is really... Consider me exhausted at this point. But at least now I know where season 1 got its parabatai troubles from. What the fuck. It was the one flaw Jace has in the show, that he put Clary above Alec and that he does it in the books frustrates me.

Now let’s move on to Voldemort and Quirrel.

I mean, Valentine and Hodge. Huh. However did I confuse those two? How straaange.

No, but in all seriousness. The show pulled Hodge’s betrayal off better. In the book, it really does have a hugeass Voldemort-Quirrel vibe.

Not to mention. What the fuck. I mean, Clary is literally standing right there and she doesn’t say a word. Apparently, as we see after Val leaves the Institute again, she could speak. It wasn’t like she was paralyzed in that way. I still don’t get if the invisible wall keeping her from the action also made her invisible, but otherwise I could not explain why Valentine would ignore his daughter.

So Val already gets to abduct my precious puppy before the first book ends. Okay. I am cautiously okay with that because I’m a fucking sadist.

And the problem is that I understand Hodge. Valentine makes such valid points and I’m not really sure what the author was thinking. I mean. Val literally makes the points that were my biggest complaints about the show already.

That the Clave treats some of its ‘former’ terrorists like bad criminals and locks them away, others get house-arrest and others get to... run the New York Institute. That is just a fucking mess of a legal system.

I mean, are we just supposed to accept that the Clave doesn’t even try to make sense and that they have no fucks to give...? Is that it? Is it just part of this world? Because I’m more inclined to question the author’s ability to build a coherent world.

Now, lastly before we wrap this up - Luke fucking finally joins the plot.

It’s due time. I mean, properly joins the plot. And hey - my suspicion a few chapters ago was true. The wolves had come to Hotel Dumort to get Clary to the safety of the pack but due to “I really wanna have conflict here so I’ll have them act really illogically and act threatening and attacking right away instead of calmly explaining shit to Jace and Clary and then bringing them to Luke”, it was a fucking mess. And yes, we have officially reached the part where I accept that this is the author’s first book and she is obviously highly unused to building a coherent world that isn’t driven by convenient plot-devices.

Let me sign this off with: Gretel is Luke’s third in command? What? She was such a throw-away character in the show.

So let me tag on a bit show-criticism: The wolves were so unimportant in the show. It’s literally just Luke and Maia and a bunch of nameless faces. Unless someone - Alaric, Gretel - needs to die. No, stop doing that, stop only introducing character who are either turning on the pack (Russell) or dying.

It’s the same problem I have with the Institute, but at least the Institute, as I have now learned, has the excuse that technically in book-canon there aren’t more Shadowhunters around. But the pack is. There are others. Give us recurring faces, give them names. Give us a sense of familarity and recognition.
