Mayor Ras Jua Baraka (born April 9, 1970) is an educator, author, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, Baraka is the 40th and current mayor of Newark, New Jersey. First elected in the 2014 election, he was sworn into office on May 13, 2014, and was reelected in 2018 and 2022.

Before he was elected mayor, he served on the Municipal Council of Newark and as principal of the city’s Central High School. He is a candidate for Governor of New Jersey in the 2025 election.

A Newark native, he is the son of poet and activist Amiri Baraka and his wife Amina. He was educated in the Newark Public Schools and earned a BA in Political Science from Howard University and an MA in Education Supervision from St. Peter’s University.

He was the principal of Central High School (2007-13).

He edited In the Tradition: An Anthology of Young Black Writers (1992). He was featured on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, as the narrator of several interludes on the album. He recorded the intro to The Score, The Fugees’ second album. He and Hill recorded an unreleased single together entitled “Hot Beverage in the Winter”, which featured on his spoken-word album Shorty for Mayor.

He dedicated his collection of poems Black Girls Learn Love Hard to the life of his late sister, Shani Baraka. He had read as part of the city’s Dodge Poetry Festival. He has participated in the National Political Hip-Hop Convention. In 2019, he released the spoken word video What We Want.

Shanie's Action Figure Update! 6/19/2023

SPECIAL EDITION!

So I haven't done one of these in awhile, but this isn't a normal update. This is specifically an update on my "Collections".

Because really, nobody ever asked for my picspam posts so maybe a text post you can skip is more palatable.

Discussion of Sami, Kevin, AEW Women, and The Bloodline figures under cut.

So in case any of you didn't know, I have "Collections" of things. namely, sets of figures that I'm trying to complete for display as a whole.

One of these Collections is a full, main line set of each First Time In Line AEW Womens figures.

The only update to that is that I have Jamie Hayter coming MOC in a protector some time in the near future. It was on backorder so I'm waiting for it to come in from Ringside Collectibles. But I will get it eventually.

That is all I need from that for the moment as there are no other figures out there right now. Although I need to get a loose Ruby Soho for my shelf.

The second collection I'm working on is my Zowens Matched Sets MOC collection.

That one, I have TWO updates for!

I just bought the Yep Movement Kevin Elite MOC. Good price, looks like it's in great condition. I already have the clamshell for it, I just need to have it delivered and put on my wall with the others.

The second one I bought was the Elite 101 Wrestlemania 38 Kevin.

Yeah, I gave in. I'm getting the WM38 figures.

Of course, Kevin WILL be opened. Very carefully. And his SCSA shirt is coming off and his heads getting swapped before being put back in the case and THEN put on my wall. I want him displaying his ACTUAL WM38 look if he's going next to Sami. (Sidenote: I really really hate that Sami figure, but it is what it is.)

That means the only figures left to get for that wall right now is the Yep Movement Sami (See below) and Wrestlemania 38 Sami.

And yeah, the Sami is still at Ringside, but that Sami, OMG SAMI.

Finally, my Extended Bloodline collection!

That one, I have a single update on. I bought a loose Elite 40 Umaga in the black and red (of course) which will be a placeholder on the shelf until I can find a way to make, buy, or commission a set of 3 Minute Warning figures. OCD prefers matched sets and having Umaga and Superhero Rosey rubs the sharkskin the wrong damn way, especially because there is no Superhero Rosey in Mattel scale, and if I try to put the Jakks one with it, it'll look weird.

Next on that list to get is Elite 15 Yokozuna, which I would love to find loose in good condition with a robe but I may have to settle for loose good condition WITHOUT Robe. The Summerslam Flashback version is the same figure as the Elite 15 but the colors are reversed (E15 – Black belt, red tights, SS – Red belt, black tights). I suppose I could settle for the SS one, but I really want the E15. 

Also on the list – Jakks Classic Superstars Peter Maivia and Rocky Johnson. Yes, there is a Mattel Rocky Johnson but good GOD is it awful. They gave him R-Truth's skin tone. It is BAD. Also, the gear is the wrong color.  

Outside of that, the only other person I could potentially want that’s been made is Deuce (Tamina’s brother) but again, he’s Jakks only and he wouldn’t fit on the shelf at ALL. Not unless I can find a way to customize him into his Sim Snuka persona which still wouldn’t fix the fact that he’d be out of scale with the rest of them (Outside of Peter and Rocky). 

At some point I’m gonna find a way to make a Jacob Fatu figure. There’s someone who sells the 3D printed heads (Same guy I got the Bloodline Sami head from) and I think I know a good formula it would just require some paintwork on the tights, some modified accessories, and painting the head. No, Jacob was never in WWE, but then this really isn’t about the WWE, it’s about the family. And anyone I can make and have the ability to make, I will. 

Anyway, that's the update.

Now, for the rant about Yep Movement Sami.

That figure *THAT FIGURE*

So, the original run of that line was defective. His newsboy cap did NOT stay on his head in package. It would fall off and either cover his face or rattle around inside the box.

So. They made a running change. They put out a second version of the figure with the hat packaged on the side.

But that running change was late in the release and was only ever available at brick and mortar retail, which by that point had mostly moved on past that wave.

So there was never a whole lot of that variant out there, to begin with.

So you can imagine how impossible it is to find a minty fresh MOC figure, from 2018, that was ONLY available in stores, that had an impossibly short release run in the first place.

I have literally seen ONE specimen online in two years that I would display and, when I bought it on sight, I was immediately refunded because the seller had already sold it off ebay to someone else and forgotten to take the auction down.

Outside of that I've only seen one OTHER listing PERIOD and the box was trashed.

I don't think I'm ever getting this one. I'm gonna keep looking but at this point I'm contemplating just buying the original release and opening the box, using sticky tack to affix the hat, then putting it back in box and in clamshell.

It pisses me off royally, but it really is what it is. I'll make it work somehow. In the meantime, I have the the two Kevin's I need on the way.

Winter’s Twilight Reading

The chill has returned to the London air, and scarves have found their way back to the front of the coat rack. My wanderings in the city, limited at the best of times, become near to void in the dark winter months. Occasional rare book auctions or a wander in the wood for winter mushrooms at best.

But as fate would be so inclined I am well stocked for amazing things to read as the skies turn dark in the middle of the day. Currently finishing Shani Oates spectacular "The Devil's Supper" and just received Peter Hamilton-Giles latest "The Witching-Other", a handsome looking book I can't wait to dig into. The stack also contains an incredible edition of Peterson's "Liber Juratus Honorii" (or the Sworn Book of Honorus) grimoire translation released by Hell Fire Club Books in a beautiful hand bound edition. All of which, among many others, will receive reviews forthwith.

As well, I am working with a small group of individuals to bring about a new project, something of an online shop for oddities and rarities. Pleased to have been invited along for such an adventure by those whose work I greatly appreciate here in the UK. While it is still behind lock & key the project should launch in the near future at bewhiched.com. Keep your eyes peeled as the real treasures will be gone the second they are known. I have begun in ernest work on a set of translations from the German of works related to hedge witchcraft, toad magic, and the poisoner's path. It is early days but I hope to have them in print by the winter solstice. Both are remarkable works, one of which is incredibly rare, and neither have been critically translated into English before now.

There is the possibility of an incredibly brief return to Portugal before the winter. A vast wildfire has recently destroyed much of the landscape in the areas of my recent travels. A blackened scar on the land brought about by a long dry summer and high winds from hurricane Ophelia in the Atlantic. Yet such devastation has cleared away decades of uncut growth, revealing structures and terraces until now occluded. My hope is to potentially collect more rubbings and photographs of apotropaic markings on agricultural buildings and ruins I was not able to locate previously.

The first batch of Skeptical Occultist pre-orders have now shipped, though there are many more to package. If you have pre-ordered the second issue of the Skeptical Occultist Journal you should be seeing them in the post in the next couple of weeks, depending on your distance from London. The skies grow dark in the middle of the day, and the night is much longer than it seems possible. My long nocturnal hours extend, where my viewing of the sun decreases to near zero. I head to bed at sunrise, a pink light on my pillow, and wake to find the sun is setting once again. A timeless twilight of the dark months ahead.

For the 3 sentence fic: geraskier and coffee shop au? 💕

“One earl grey tea with lemon, and a large banana mocha with extra chocolate whipped cream and caramel sprinkles— oh,” Jaskier peters off, seeing only his second favourite regular standing behind the counter, with no sign of his favourite. He could have sworn that Geralt brought his daughter too, but she’s nowhere in sight. “Just you, then? Guess I should actually talk to the customer before making the order, probably.”

He pushes the coffee concoction across the counter and dumps out the tea; Geralt accepts his sweet drink with an even sweeter small smile. Jaskier would move mountains for that smile. He would give up his beloved Thursday afternoon poetry slam jams just to move all his shifts for that smile— and in fact, to his supervisor Shani’s great amusement, that’s exactly what he’s done.

After taking a long sip of the drink that Jaskier knows by now will be the man’s only indulgence for the day, Geralt sighs. It’s a deep, bone-shaking sigh of relief, and Jaskier is honoured to be the one to have given him such relief. His honour doesn’t exactly diminish his body’s inappropriate reaction to hearing the sigh, but the countertop between them has kept far greater secrets. “Ciri was supposed to join me,” Geralt says, with uncharacteristic candour, “but she bailed at the last second. She said she had plans with a friend.”

Jaskier’s stupid heart skips a beat. “Right. So… should I have made that mocha to-go, then?”

Geralt frowns and hums thoughtfully, his large hand flexing around the tiny porcelain handle of the wide mug. His tower of whipped cream starts to melt. Jaskier is about to offer him another one on the house right when he says, “It depends.”

“On?”

“If there’s another barista to cover your break.”
