Alright, get ready for some convoluted shit

The first hurdle in the trial to cross is, Akane immediately accuses Katashi of everything and does not budge. It takes Tsubame bellowing at her to SHUT UP for her to be shocked into silence. (This also, as an aside, is the only sprite that gives a glimpse of her eyes, which are red.)

Anyways, it’s determined that Katashi had found Yamaguchi’s body first. (This is pointed out because when Kotone was stuttering Megumi’s name, he immediately assumed “Yamaguchi Nakazawa,” instead of “Nakayama Megumi,” which is a weird assumption to make given that Kotone doesn’t call anybody by their first names.) He then apparently decided this was the perfect opportunity to murder someone and lured Akane out and attacked her, but obviously failed.

The trial itself I remember getting pretty confusing because there are two murderers and many attacks and one murderer tries throwing things off by confessing to something they didn’t do, because they figure that counts as getting away with their actual murder and therefore they can escape.

Anyways, the culprits are Koizumi Ren and Wakahisa Shinobu. (Koizumi is the one who tries to be sneaky and confess to stabbing Shinobu/strangling Megumi.) With Shinobu, he was confronted by Megumi, who was accusing him of being the mastermind or something because of how he wasn’t in any of her pictures. She was the one who stabbed him, and he retaliated by strangling her in the laundry room. Then, he dragged her to the pool and threw her in to try to disguise the method of death, make it drowning instead of strangulation, and then went back to the laundry room to hide until he heard other people talking outside.

Meanwhile, Koizumi simply stabbed Yamaguchi in the gym and wiped some blood on the door to the girl’s locker room in case that could potentially throw suspicion off him, then went to the kitchen to wash the knife and replace it. (I hadn’t quite thought of anything terribly clever about this murder.)

Anyways, once revealed, Shinobu tries to say that he didn’t want to murder, it was self-defense, but Akane angrily pushes back on that, because strangling takes a long time, he didn’t have to commit to it. Meanwhile, Koizumi freely admits that he killed because he knows people typically look over him and don’t really suspect him of anything. (You could say, these deaths are about being suspected and not being suspected I guess?)

The execution is sort of a side by side one. Koizumi is chained upside down, dangling over a dangerous-looking plant (bubbling acid). Shinobu’s execution is…the same as the opening execution, actually, the closing walls. The only difference is, when Shinobu moves forward, it drops Koizumi down. There’s a switch next to Koizumi, and hitting it makes him go up again, but causes Shinobu to be dragged further back. Shinobu, seeing that he’ll be crushed soon, rushes forward too fast for Koizumi to stop him. Koizumi gets dunked into the acid, Shinobu makes it out, though the chain holding his leg is stuck. As he tries to get his leg free, a guillotine blade drops on him, ending the execution.

Gamera 3: Revenge of Isis (1999)

My rating: 6/10

It's objectively pretty good, and even the CGI mostly holds up surprisingly well, but it's just a bit (or a lot) too bleak for me right now - it's all just destruction and misery, and then it ends on a cliffhanger that, as far as I can tell, never got resolved. Not bad, but not for me.

Chris: Gamera: Guardian for the Universe is the first Gamera film in 15 years starting the Gamera Hesei era, featuring the Gyaos, somewhat standard Gamera fare, noticed that the Earth forces seemed a bit colder towards Gamera, Watch: When Free for kaiju aficionados.

Richie: The googly-eyed Gyaos make this a lot of fun, it’s not the best Gamera movie but it’s not the worst, it’s one of the first Gamera films that doesn’t focus on six year old so it is refreshing, Watch: On Subscription Service.
