i mentioned offhandedly that losing the havoc marauder should have impacted the team a lot more, emotionally and practically too, like they should have been planet-bound and struggle with it instead of immediately and casually hitching a ride, and my brother blown me away with replying "they do the same with tech"

and the thing is, they do. we see some (not as much as i'd like, but some) of the emotional impact of his death but we don't see the struggle of such a tight-knit "us against the world" kind of team suddenly having to adapt to missing a member. his absence should shake them not just as loss and grief but as something debilitating, as having to re-strategize a lot of how they worked together previously because suddenly there's just stuff they can't do because it was tech's thing

instead, they fill in his roles, casually, easily, without a comment. and it feels like, with the way they were raised and the way they did missions back in the war, heavily relying on the unique assets of each of them, that it shouldn't be this easy. they should be struggling, having to work twice as hard to figure out a way around things their brother could do in five minutes

my most bitter proposal for a season 2 fix it is that the crew refuses to let ed back on the boat (as they should) so stede throws a tantrum and ultimatums that if ed stays so will he but the crew just take him up on that.

they make their inn in the wreckage of anne + marys house and the crew goes off and continues to have fun hijinks with izzy as the ship parent

actually you know what, while I still stand firmly behind "the real villain of rex's tcw-era gothic horror story is rex with a control chip in his head" I think there's another option I'm ignoring here...

in classic gothic horror, of course, a hero has two main ways to resolve the problem of the monster:

✅defeat the monster

✅become the monster

and in canon, rex - being the overachiever that he is - gets to do both!

but gothic romance introduces a third, exciting option:

✅marry the monster

and I think rexwalker is definitely at its sexiest when it involves an anakin who is anywhere on the path from rots-era anguished doubt, to full-on commitment as darth vader, turning all his immense capacity for love and his ride-or-die, damn-the-consequences loyalty towards one ordinary (brave, determined, genuinely good) clone
