Silent Hill: The Short Message is a really rubbish bit of trauma tourism that feels like a bad Bloober game despite not being a Bloober game. It's another bit of miserable nonsense squirted out by a Konami that doesn't give a stuff. Let's hate it together!
Silent Hill: The Short Message now available for PS5 for free

Konami has released Silent Hill: The Short Message, a new Silent Hill experience, as a free download for PlayStation 5 via PlayStation Store.
Here is an overview of the game, via Konami:
Following messages from her friend Maya, Anita finds herself at a crumbling apartment block, infamous for rumors of suicides.
Drawn inside, Anita soon finds her sense of reality shattered as she encounters bizarre, otherworldly spaces and twisted monsters.
Maya’s message was clear—“can’t leave til you find it”—but what is it that Anita is really looking for?
An all-new, modern Silent Hill experience, powered by the latest in game technology, now available free to play exclusively on PlayStation 5.

If there's one thing Silent Hill: The Short Message communicated to me, it's that for some reason, people really like to take the teeth out of what teens say to each other when they're being bullied.
Idk if it's a censorship thing or a thinking teens actually talk like that thing, but i promise it's not like "YOU'RE SO BORING POST SEXY PICS YOU'RE SUCH A LOSER UGLY CRYBABY" it's like "show tits whore. i m going to rape ur fat fucking d*ke mouth. ugly slut." "i cant stand ur fucking face so id put a bag over ur head ande fuck u in the ass LMAO" "slit your fucking wrists, you attention whore, nobody loves you, like oh boo poor me my mommy doesnt love me :((( your so pathetic"
Like i promise teenagers will say ANYTHING adults say to hurt each other, and several things they won't. If you're gonna go in for bullying, go IN for it or it makes it seem like Baby Silent Hill instead of taking the issue seriously
P.S. Nobody has been insulted by the word WITCH in several centuries
IM SO MAD WHY CANT THEY MAKE A DECENT SILENT HILL ANYMORE. indie devs have a better grasp on what made those games good than konami.
this game is so unsubtle and on the nose it feels insulting. you cant go 5 seconds without a cutscene flashing the words "THIS IS ABOUT HIGHSCHOOL BULLYING AND PARASOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS" in bold bright red letters, every line from the mc is "oooh boy im not as good as maya ooooh i dont have followers". even then the actual depicted bullying feels target-less? none of the insults make sense in context, theyre too general. they should be more specific for them to hit.
its not even scary, its just reusing imagery from PT, the architectures just winding halls, the main ghost is literally lisa, the otherworld is full of eyes like the later loops of the house. theres no tension because the mc will not shut the fuck up, if you wanted to capture what PT was doing she shouldve been silent, at least quieter, and the whole of it should have been vaguer about the plot, let us find it ourselves, dont shove it to the forefront.
this is probably a bad and stupid ramble but im really mad and i needed to get it off my chest
a lot of people saying silent hill: the short message doesn't feel like a silent hill game, but there are so many story elements referencing previous games. aside from the obvious loop mechanic being lifted from PT (which, come on guys, how do you cancel kojima and then years later pull this? come on), there were:
-grates and flames aesthetic in maze > silent hill 3
-drawing of hole in wall getting bigger > silent hill 4: the room
-image of door with multiple chains and locks >silent hill 4: the room
-guilt monster representing old trauma > silent hill 2
-cult following of a woman with psychic powers > silent hill 1 & 3
personally, i didn't like the protagonist very much because, as a lot of folks have said, her entire personality was her trauma. it's really hard to relate to someone who is so blatantly negative with every breath.
but! the themes were compelling. friendship as love, the past acting in the present, generational trauma, the haunting feeling of guilt, and being stuck in a cycle of all those things. i treasure them.
not saying it feels exactly like previous silent hill games, but like a certain wolfe once said, it sure beats homecoming.
“Seeking a connection with others is a sign of weakness… It’s running away. The strongest animals don’t form groups; they act alone, and need only themselves to survive. Those who betray themselves to fit into a group are pathetic… There’s no beauty in living like that. I want to be strong on my own, without a group. If there were only someone who would understand that… ”

Idk maybe I’d like cherry blossom head more if this came out after silent hill f since flowers and plants are featured more prominently in the trailer. Right now it just kinda clashes with the franchise
