I own nothing but the 'creative' vision and the eye texture of the human Sims - except for Endora because she apparently rejected the idea of having twinkle eyes and I cannot figure out where those eyes are coming from for the life of me. I've stripped her right back to the base and they persist. Which is odd considering that my eyes are default ones by design... Either way, I suppose it fits her character! (ᴗ_ ᴗ。)

WIP - Bathhouse - 二天 & 天

Yesterday I worked on the upper floors of the Bathhouse from Spirited Away.

When I build, I like to do the interior and exterior side by side. It helps me maintain the flow of the interior and the visual of the exterior, especially in a build like this where the two may not actually. Yesterday I mostly worked on the interior.

Due to the nature of this build, it contains spoilers for the movie Spirited Away and images of emotional moments. Because of this, and how long this post is, I've added the keep reading.

On the way to 天, the elevator that Chihiro and the Radish Spirit take stops at 二天. Translated literally as Heaven and Second Heaven, the subs I watched called them Sky and Second Sky. My folders are named for the subs, but I really enjoy the imagery of these floors being called Heaven.

Either way.

The elevator door opens on 二天 to this long hall of shoji, back-lit to show patrons inside the rooms. I love this scene. It's only a few frames of the movie and is never mentioned again, but it has so much ambiance I needed it for my build.

Obviously a WIP, I was so excited to find a solution for the spandrels I could live with. The in-game options were sending me up a wall. These, and I'm calling them spandrels because I don't have a better word for them, are to me very specific in a few ways: 1) they're a dark wood tone, 2) they have small, vertical slits that allow light though and 3) they come down to the top of the shoji.

I had a couple options for spandrels that weren't solid, but they were either filled in with paper (SE) or were horizontal (CC).

So I made my own. They're not finalized because I have to fight with them a little bit still. The CC beams I'm using are best placed against a wall which I then delete, but this means they're slightly off center from the vertical lines on the wall as seen on the farther set. I can 'center' them by doubling up, as seen on the closer one, but that's not quite right. I could probably manage it with TOOL? For a WIP though, I'm thrilled. I'm also thrilled I could get the 4 shoji per beam right, and being able to paint the ceilings has made this so much better.

Looking at it right now, I can only see the little things I need to change - the floor needs to be rotated, and likely switched completely, and the shoji aren't quite right. There's a lack of shoes of the floor, the lights hang from the ceiling rather than being flush against them, and I haven't added the signage to the spandrels yet.

Still, I'm pleased with it so far. I can't have a never-ending hallway because the lot won't allow for it, but I can have this hall turn onto another and another, so that sims will have a long hall to walk though.

I also did some fun stuff in Yubaba's quarters on the 天 floor.

There's this scene in her office with plenty of light, including this shot of the fireplace from behind her desks:

So I worked on this:

The actual furniture is coming together nicely, but what I was really excited about was the fireplace. The scale of the painting and the molding around it are so close. I wish I had a wider fireplace that suited, but this one is marble with a rounded cavity and a green insert, my main feature requirements.

Obviously it needs the rugs, and I can mostly only see the little things that are wrong - the tallest walls are still too short and the room can never be big enough due to lot restrictions. The size and type of vase needs to be changed and the doorways want columns and tweaked curtains. But I am feeling mighty validated in my CC hoarding since I had multiple pink chairs with rolled arms, and even the quickly found placeholder pillows are working well. I always wonder if I really need all those recolors, and the answer is yes I do.

The bright lighting on the walls isn't ideal, but I managed to get the pattern on the floor and the shadows casting from the alcoves onto it. I was also so excited that these columns came in a swatch with a green beam and a brown base.

Listing out all the CC in these WIPs would be impractical, especially since a fair amount of it is serving as a placeholder, but I'm happy to share any details about what I've used and plan on listing it out on more finalized spaces.

She's rather surprised by Hyunki's question, but at the same time, she understands it. He probably doesn't watch other streamers than her which is why he might know what has happened. "Twitch doesn't work in our country anymore." She says rather nonchalantly, ending up shrugging. Does Yoomi know the reason? Of course, she does, but she doesn't remember it. Her attention returns to the waiter who has come to take their order, letting Hyunki list their order and her attention doesn't return to the man on the opposite side of her until the waiter leaves to give their order to the chef. "They would ask for justice and hope you rot in hell if something happens to me in your company. Or somewhere in the limbo." And there she is, grinning again while brushing her hair back. "But streaming is... It's nice. It's going well." Yoomi has never been someone who goes into details -- she keeps things simple. "How about you? How is school? Swimming?" She pauses when the waiter returns with their drinks. "When is your next swimming competition?" And as soon as the waiter leaves, she opens her mouth again before taking a sip from her soda.

Also some may notice that their leg is swapped. The original version I was using seems to have weighting issues (meaning it's not following the leg bone of the Sim's rig) but the CC came with a flipped version and it's weighted! ♡

Only thing is now Sen is stuck with the shorts' belt/phone because the flipped leg doesn't have a version without it. But it's a small sacrifice if it means they can move! (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) .ᐟ.ᐟ

So I saw the post about the calliope and Jon going to Elias first and decided to look into something. And I stumbled across something that is even more damming...

In MAG35 Martin signs for the delivery of some things. He leaves the lighter in Jon's desk drawer. This is when Breekon and Hope bring the table

In MAG36 Tim tells Jon that Elias was asking about the delivery. Jon didn't know the table was there. He ends the episode with "I need to talk to Martin". Seems sensible, get all the info before you go answer to your boss. Martin is still living in the archives iirc, shouldn't be an issue

Se estava com a cabeça quente, pensando em como cumprimentaria Taeyong dali em diante, um copo de café gelado ajudou a esfriar, mas não foi a bebida sobre a mesa. Veio de trás, molhou seus cabelos, invadiu sua camisa e te deixou grudenta. O encosto da cadeira não protegeu em nada.

Você se virou devagar, tentando entender o que acontecia, e se deparou com uma cena e tanto.

— Por que você tá fazendo isso? É você quem tá terminando comigo — Ouviu a voz masculina dizer, sem compreender. Não queria interromper a DR alheia, mas estava literalmente encharcada. Talvez tivesse que lavar o cabelo pelo menos umas vinte vezes para tirar o cheiro de café e baunilha.

— Tá, mas você nem sente nada? Nem pergunta o que fez de errado?

— Errado é relativo, o seu conceito de errado pode ser o certo para outra pessoa. — Finalmente o cara alto te olhou. Ele definitivamente não fazia o seu tipo, você gostava dos certinhos, dos “almofadinhas”, como seus amigos costumavam dizer. — Olha o que você fez.

Você se sentiu como uma criança no meio de adultos, só não completamente, graças à saia lápis e aos saltos médios.

— Você tá bem? — Ele perguntou e você o olhou. Ele não fazia o seu tipo, mas era lindo.

Você balançou a cabeça para afastar sua mania de se apaixonar por todo cara com quem esbarrava, mas ele interpretou como uma resposta negativa, que você logo corrigiu:

— Estou bem, tirando a mira péssima dela. — Ele sorriu, sussurrou um “com licença” e, quando você menos esperou, estava segurando sua mão, te levando para fora. A mulher exclamava o nome dele: John, Johnny Suh, idiota e filho da... Ok, esses últimos não eram exatamente o nome dele.

— Sua camisa tá transparente, veste isso. — Ele tirou a jaqueta jeans (mesmo com o calor) e a colocou sobre seus ombros. Você tentou tirar o excesso de café dos cabelos, que começavam a ficar ondulados pelo líquido. Colocou os braços nas mangas, sendo abraçada pelo tecido instantaneamente. — Desculpa pelo que aconteceu. Acho que ela me achou insensível por não implorar pra continuar o namoro.

— Ah, então essa é a sensação de passar por um término? — Você questionou enquanto andavam pela calçada. Johnny era esquisito, parecia um personagem teatral, contornando postes e tudo mais. Ele parou, fazendo você olhar para ele.

— Nunca passou por um término? — Ele perguntou curioso, e você negou com a cabeça. — Bom pra você.

— Em compensação... — Você o puxou, segurando a roupa dele com os dedos em formato de pinça. Ele ficou do seu lado direito, intercalando o olhar entre você e a calçada. — Já fui rejeitada inúmeras vezes.

— Conta outra. — Ele disse, esperando que você risse e negasse, mas você não o fez. Isso fez Johnny tirar o sorriso de moleque do rosto, com medo de te envergonhar. — Você tá ocupada?

Você pensou por um instante. Será que sua amiga conseguiria te dar aquele atestado? Era a chance de transformar o momento, mesmo que fosse passageiro. Queria, pelo menos uma vez, viver intensamente, acompanhando um estranho para algum lugar suspeito e...

— Você não é um serial killer, né?

— Definitivamente não, tenho aflição de sangue. — Ele disse, e você sorriu, mostrando a palma da mão para ele. Johnny a segurou, entrelaçando os dedos nos seus. Ele te conduziu pelas avenidas, atravessando fora das faixas, sem se importar com as buzinas. Você quase teve um ataque cardíaco, mas o convenceu a usar as faixas de pedestres até chegarem a um bairro italiano.

Uma feirinha culinária estava acontecendo, e o cheiro de massa e doces invadiu suas narinas, te deixando com fome.

— Quer me conquistar pelo estômago? — Você perguntou sorrindo, e Johnny, que já sabia algumas coisas sobre você, retribuiu o sorriso.

— Acabei de descobrir mais uma coisa sua. — Johnny falou em italiano com uma senhora de uma das barracas e te ofereceu um garfo com massa coberta por molho e queijo, que você aceitou sem pestanejar.

— Isso tá muito bom.

— Sabia que você ia gostar. — Você nem notou que ainda segurava a mão dele. Johnny te guiou até o fim da feirinha, depois de te fazer experimentar amostras de salgados e doces. No final, ele tentou te proteger de algumas crianças com arminhas de água, mas no final seu rosto acabou molhado do mesmo jeito.

— Você atrai essas coisas, né? — Você riu, e ele secou seu rosto. O toque dele em sua bochecha foi suave, e você segurou a respiração. O sorriso sumiu aos poucos, enquanto seu coração acelerava.

— Temos algo em comum — Ele disse, se aproximando, testando terreno, esperando que você não o afastasse, mesmo sendo estranhos. — O amor nunca dá certo pra gente.

— Você pode me beijar? — Você perguntou de repente, se sentindo ridícula, mas o olhar dele te fazia dizer coisas sem sentido.

— Já beijou antes?

— Um selinho na sétima série conta?

Johnny sorriu, segurou seu rosto e se inclinou. Os lábios dele encontraram os seus de forma suave e leve, e você teve a impressão de que poderia facilmente derreter em seus braços.

— Acho que te amo. — Você deixou escapar, e Johnny sorriu, te dando um beijinho.

— Não rouba a minha fala, linda.

WIP - Bathhouse - Guest Areas

Yesterday, I did this:

As before, I'm adding a cut for length & spoilers for the movie Spirited Away.

Some of the broadest environment shots we get in Spirited Away are devoted to area above the baths.

I don't have the squares for all that, but I can get close. I can get the vibe. And I'm getting closer to what I want.

It's been a really fun, overly-complicated match the detail game. There's different wood on each of the floors, for example - a dark stained wood on the lowest floor, laquered black in the middle, and bright red, a little more matte, on the top floor. The cavity for the podium includes the floor above it, and the whole area is lit by globe lights on the walls and columns.

I spent a lot of time yesterday flipping though images of that whole wall face, the podium up to the great door that the River Spirit leaves through, inside and out, to figure out what was going wrong and why things weren't looking right.

The answer was in the section above the main entrance:

Above the main entrance there is a sign, then windows with a small roof, and then the balcony with the huge door, another roof, another balcony, and so on.

Here's how I resolved that:

(There have been some small changes since this image was taken, but nothing that changes my point here).

So you have the entrance, the wooden sign with metal brackets (don't worry it's been moved down), the windows, the little roof, and the balcony above.

We get most of the information about the path from the entrance to the baths from this scene:

I got it into my head that they go down stairs to get to the baths, but I can't find the proof of that now. Oh well. Whether I'm right or wrong, it's how my build has it and it's too late now. And this is just an interpretation. Right?

Honestly, putting the baths beneath the main floor lets me make them much bigger, so it's a better solution. I'd never fit the hot springs on the entrance level. Right?

And I'm so sure I saw something that told me the entrance and baths weren't on the same floor.

Regardless.

The inside ends up like this:

The angles don't match, but you get the idea. The cavity that the podium is in sits directly against the wall of the entrance so that the stained glass is exposed within it, but the podium still sits far enough back.

Quick shoutout to myself for finding a way to capture those lovely gold panels. They were a doozy. They're taller than Chihiro's head, but shorter than the doorways, and are framed black then again with the wooden framing that's everywhere.

I was also really satisfied with the wallpaper for the podium. I was shocked I didn't have something with the whole moon / pelican imagery, but I found something with the right colors and shapes, and that'll do.

What I did is most easily explained with the floor plans I think:

RIP to the fun elevator I had in the cavity's place before, but it had to get switched (for now) to the opposite end where it doesn't belong. I needed that podium cavity to look right.

I also lost the stairs that went down to that floor and were hidden beside the podium. They're now off to the side, still perfectly usable by sims, but not technically correct. I'll probably fiddle with them more later. There will be both stairs and an elevator connecting the entrance floor to the baths, but where they go is still being interpreted.

But as you go up, the floors weren't adding up.

The balcony with the huge door is on the floor with the black laquered wood, not the red like it is in my build. The entrance level in my build is the brown wood, meaning the balcony with the huge door should be one floor up not two, because I needed that floor in-between for the sign and the small windows.

So I just kind of fudged it:

The balcony is on the red floor, and there's a little bonus balcony on the black floor. Also I won't be able to have a proper rooftop inside because the red floor is where the whole open to the bottom thing ends. I flirted with the idea of disconnecting the exterior from the interior and having a false giant door on either side, but it just felt wrong. So I'll likely use object roofing to make it work when I get there.

Or rebuild the whole floor like I did for the baths yesterday:

I've been a little frustrated by my lack of exacts - the characters on the sign and lanterns are wrong, the lights have flourishes they shouldn't, the curtains aren't a dark enough purple, but I have to remind myself that close enough is close enough. The sims aren't worried that the murals in the baths go from blue-toned to pink rather than yellow to pink. Sims can't read. This project is about finding enough things that are close enough that the overall experience feels magical, and I'm getting there.

I'm so interested in all of your posts about mad liberation. I've never seen anything that puts my thoughts on the whole psych complex into words. I'm really curious to learn more about this. No pressure if not, but do you happen to know of any more comprehensive resources on this? Like books maybe?

Hi, I can definitely give you some recs! My list is a little bit UK centric because that's where I'm based but hopefully it's useful:

In terms of books:

I read 'Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health' by Micha Frazer-Carroll this summer and I can't recommend it enough.

I'm also making my way through 'Call Me Crazy: Stories from the Mad Movement' by Irit Shimrat, which I think is out of print but can be read as a PDF here (hopefully)

I've only dipped in and out of his books for my dissertation but Andrew Scull has written several well regarded books about the history of psychiatry ('Museums of Madness' is the one I've read bits of, 'Desperate Remedies' is on my TBR)

Some books on my TBR: 'The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophrenia Became a Black Disease' by Johnathan Metzl, 'Drop the Disorder!', 'Searching for a Rose Garden: Challenging Psychiatry, Fostering Mad Studies', 'Anatomy of an Epidemic' by Robert Whitaker

To read full issues you need to subscribe (I recently paid for a subscription for a year of digital editions for £10, physical copies are a bit more) but the website has plenty of articles that you can read for free so well worth exploring.

Psych Survivor Archive - US based this time, there is so much on here, the Psych Survivor Zine is the main event but they also have a really great resource list (some of the links are dead though).

Mad in America - publish a lot of really interesting and impactful stuff on their website, I also really like their podcast (particularly recommend this episode about ECT, this one about esketamine, and this one about 'prolonged grief disorder'). There is also Mad in the UK and a number of other country specific sites that exist as part of their Mad in the World Network.

Folks to follow:

Dolly Sen - UK based artist who does and is doing a lot of cool stuff, notably at the moment they are the lead artist for the Birdsong From Inobservable Worlds project. This podcast episode they did is also great.

Nicole / lacey_art_ - another UK based artist, she wrote a poem about a bird recently that I can't stop thinking about (she does a lot of other cool things too).

Rachel Rowan Olive - brilliant and funny artist, she is also on instagram and etsy.

Luna Tic - artist and activist who has been involved with a lot of really brilliant stuff, including the successful StopSIM Coalition here in the UK which managed to bring an end to SIM.

There are so many more I could name and so many more things I could recommend but this post is already so long! I really hope it was helpful. I started trying to be brief and then gave up but I did cut out a fiction and literature recs section because I thought that was overkill lmao.
