Sinthea went out to buy some things when she was on her way back home. She found a small dog trembling and scared. Without hesitation, she took it and decided to take it with her.

When she arrived home, she left the dog in the room she shared with Brock and went to take a shower without imagining the big problem that would begin in the next few minutes and would last several weeks.

As soon as Brock opened his eyes, he looked for Sin with his eyes; however, the first thing he found was the little dog. Brock raised his eyebrows in confusion; he did not remember that they had one.

The dog turned to see him as soon as he noticed the movement. He tried to get closer but stopped when he noticed Brock staring at him.

“Why is there a rat in my room?" Brock mumbled, and that's when the little dog came closer to bite him.

“Leave it alone!" Sin yelled at him, pulling the puppy away from him.

“That rat attacked me," Brock defended himself.

“Sin left the room along with the dog, though Brock could be sure the dog was taunting him.

“He's a rat," Brock muttered, knowing she wouldn't hear him.

As the days went by, the fights between the dog Duke and Brock increased; it seemed that both wanted to have all of Sinthea's attention.

But the fight got bigger the day Brock was going to prepare himself some delicious and juicy steaks. Sin was on a mission.

Brock took out of the refrigerator the steaks he had been marinating for several days, finished seasoning and cooking them, and left them for a moment on the kitchen counter.

When he returned, the only thing he found was a trail that led him directly to the culprit. This fact was the straw that broke the camel's back. The fights started to become more frequent, but Sinthea always came to save Duke.

The next time she went on a mission, something different happened. While Brock was chasing Duke "after he had stolen and destroyed one of his favorite boots" to take his right boot, Duke crashed into a piece of furniture, and Sinthea's favorite vase fell, shattering into pieces.

Hearing the crash, Duke stopped and turned to see the chaos he had caused. Brock was standing there, pale, if Sinthea noticed...

Duke let go of the boot; they both knew they were in trouble. Brock quickly left the house; he had to get another vase any way he could. After scouring about ten stores, he found one exactly like it, so he bought it.

“I'm not doing it for you, rat; I'm doing it for me. I know you'll say I broke it to frame you, when we both know it was an accident, so nothing happened," Brock said when he returned and showed the replacement vase to Duke.

Duke only wagged his tail; a few hours later, he approached Brock and left two cookies nearby. Brock interpreted that gesture as a peace offering and slowly raised his hand and reached out to pet his head.

Sinthea arrived just to see Brock pet him.

“Wow, you're already friends," she commented.

“We understood that we have to live together, so I won't try to kick him out anymore, and Duke will leave my stuff alone," Brock said.

Post-Hydra, Brock was a free agent, and he'd gone his separate ways from most of his old contacts. Sometimes because they were dead, sometimes because he'd killed them, but those were just details. Hydra had fucked him royally, and he'd been on a bit of a revenge streak against the people who'd left him buried under a building. He'd kept loose tabs on Sinthea for the same reason you'd want to know where you left your nuclear bomb. Might come in handy if you needed a weapon of mass destruction, but you didn't want to be in town when it happened to go off. He knew when she'd arrived in Madripoor with a new partner, and he wasn't concerned about the newest model--odds were, she'd kill him before Brock bothered to anyway--until he found out who it was.

Rogers was out when he let himself in, and there was Sin wearing his fuckin' t-shirt like they were playing house or something. Anger, jealousy, and possessiveness simmered just under the surface, but the words were calm enough when he spoke. "Fuck knows I've caught you in some compromising situations, girl. But this has gotta be a new low. SHIELD mess yer head all around again, or is this actually you?" As bad as that had been, watching her think she was Mary Fucking Sunshine, at least it made sense. He'd seen Hydra's version of brainwashing up close and personal on the Soldier, and it was nothing to fuck around with. He'd cured her of that once, and he could do it again. Much worse if it was really Sin. Brock could probably cure that one too, but if that was the case, it was going to take more than a little slapping around to remind her who she was.

A horror's gallery of pain and suffering, two hired goons pushing him about with the bedside manner of Mengele and the only person he can think to ask for is his worst enemy. He let out a wordless roar of rage as soon as the door to the safehouse closed behind him. The place was untouched, which he took to mean Kingpin didn't yet know about it, but he was still furious about the abduction. He swiped some things off the nearest table, and at least one of them made a satisfying crack that meant it was broken. That internal fury needed an external outlet, but as long as he was only smashing things, it wasn't a fatal level of anger. Dex was most dangerous at a distance, not close up.

"How did he know? We were careful!" he raged, kicking over a chair. A boot came down on one of the legs until it snapped with an audible crack, not unlike the sound the bones in his hand had made when he broke them to get free of the cuffs. He was equally proficient with both hands, so it hadn't slowed him down, but he resented having to go to such lengths. Dex was always careful, meticulous even, and when that ended, there was nothing left but chaos and murder. When he found out where the mistake had happened there were going to be more bodies on the ground.

Brock walked into the forest, scanning the surroundings. It was a dark night, and the scene looked like something out of a horror movie, so he had to be on his guard to avoid falling into a possible trap.

What he did not expect to find in that secluded spot, however, was Sinthea Schmidt. She emerged from the shadows, her presence barely a whisper in the darkness.

“Rumlow,” Sinthea said. “What brings you here? “She was supposed to be the only one with a mission here.

“A mission,” she replied dryly, frowning. “And you, what are you doing in this place?"

“Let’s say I’m looking for something. Something I can only find here,” Sinthea replied as she smiled with an enigmatic expression.

While they were talking, they continued walking through the forest; perhaps there had been some small miscommunication, and that’s why they had sent the two of them. Also, although it sounded strange, Sinthea caused Brock to smile and laugh with her witticisms.

In the undergrowth, they found a small meadow covered in wildflowers, bathed in silver moonlight. Finally, they had found what they had been looking for; even if it seemed insignificant, those little flowers were going to be of great help for what Hydra was looking to do.

Under the starry sky, amidst the soft murmur of the wind and the intoxicating perfume of the flowers, Brock caught sight of Sin; after all, she too was a wildflower, and he went up to her and kissed her.

"Yeah? Who'm I talking to? Cap's girlfriend? Mary fuckin' Sunshine? The woman who used to be Sinthea Schmidt?" He was smiling but there was nothing pleasant about it as he tried to goad her into some sort of reaction. He used to spend every spare minute he could with Sin, but two days in a safehouse with her after escaping the Raft, and all he could think about was his hands around her throat. She was driving him up the fuckin' wall with this new act of hers, and he never could resist needling her back, wanting to see how far he could push her before she snapped.

He wanted to prove--to himself, to her--that she was still herself, just as violent and chaotic and unpredictable as always. "The old you would be sick if you could see yourself. When you gonna get it through your head that he ain't here? I'm the one who yanked yer ass outta prison. I'm the one puttin' up with your shit. You wanna go back to Captain Prettyboy, then get the fuck out. When he gift wraps you for SHIELD a second time, you're gonna be shit outta luck, 'cause I won't be there. And guess what, girl. He won't be either."
