Ever wonder why human skin comes in so many amazing shades? 🤔 It's one of the coolest examples of ADAPTATION! Skin color is linked to melanin, our body's natural sunscreen. Folks near the equator got more melanin for protection against strong sun, while those further away needed lighter skin to make Vitamin D from weaker sunlight! Nature is amazing! ✨
Discover more incredible ways humans adapted to different environments! Check out the full article:

Europeans Had Darker Skin for Far Longer Than Previously Thought, New Study Suggests
youtube
A groundbreaking genetic analysis has revealed that most Europeans retained darker skin tones until the Roman era, challenging long-held assumptions about the continent’s genetic history.
By examining the DNA of 348 individuals who lived across Eurasia over the past 45,000 years, researchers have traced the gradual evolution of skin, hair, and eye pigmentation in Europe. The study suggests that the combination of fair skin, light-colored eyes, and blonde hair was a relative rarity until surprisingly recent times.
According to evolutionary biologist Professor Guido Barbujani and his colleagues, Europeans maintained darker skin well into the Iron Age—much later than previously estimated. Their findings indicate that the shift toward lighter pigmentation occurred at a slower pace than expected, with many individuals still exhibiting darker or medium skin tones up until the Bronze and Iron Ages.
In their research paper, which is awaiting peer review, the scientists note: “The transition to lighter pigmentation was more gradual than previously thought. Half of the individuals analyzed from the Copper and Iron Ages still had darker or medium skin tones.”
Speaking to IFL Science, Barbujani explained, “We had some evidence suggesting that darker-skinned individuals persisted in Europe longer than expected.” He pointed to Cheddar Man—a 10,000-year-old Mesolithic individual from Britain known to have had dark skin and blue eyes—as an example. “What we didn’t realize was that darker skin tones were still common in Europe up until the Iron Age.”
The Iron Age, spanning roughly 3,000 to 1,700 years ago, corresponds to significant historical events such as the legendary founding of Rome and the Trojan War.
The researchers discovered that during the Paleolithic period, around 45,000 to 13,000 years ago, darker pigmentation was nearly universal. However, by the Mesolithic era, blue eyes had become more prevalent in regions like Northern Europe, France, and Serbia. One of the earliest known occurrences of lighter pigmentation was detected in the genome of a 12,000-year-old hunter-gatherer from Sweden, who exhibited a combination of fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes.
Yet, throughout the Neolithic period (10,000 to 4,000 years ago), dark skin remained dominant across most of Eurasia. Only a small number of light-skinned individuals were identified in Northern Europe. The real shift began in the Bronze Age when an increase in fair-skinned, blonde-haired, and blue-eyed individuals became apparent, with examples found in Britain, Hungary, Estonia, and the Czech Republic.
Even by the Iron Age, genomic data from different regions of Europe and Western Asia continued to show a mix of dark, medium, and light skin tones, further complicating the traditional narrative of pigmentation evolution in Europe.
“We identified the first instance of light skin in Mesolithic Sweden, but that was a single case among over 50 samples,” the researchers wrote. “The shift was slow. By the Iron Age, the frequency of light skin had finally matched that of darker skin. For much of European prehistory, however, the majority of individuals had darker complexions.”
This study paints a strikingly different picture of Europe’s genetic past—one in which fair skin was not the default but a relatively recent adaptation, shaped by millennia of gradual genetic and environmental change.

Hoyo and the white skin
I've seen people fighting about Natlan and previously Sumeru and the representation of skin color and I just want to point out that
Hoyo is a Chinese game
The Chinese beauty standards include pale skin as also many SouthEastern Asian countries
2 out of 4 of the servers are SouthEastern Asian countries including the home of the game
I think that when developing the game Hoyo focused more on pleasing the home country (and surrounding countries) than America and such.
Like in *some* American games you see the American beauty standards on people who may come from a culture where it's not the beauty standards. They do that to appeal to the American audience. Not the other international folks that play the game.
Also one thing that pisses me off is that (I'm betting) it's white people that are pissed. Like skinless chicken, only cinnamon in the spice drawer white.
I'm hella white but I think we should let the people who come from the culture that is being represented figure out wether it's properly portrayed or not.
I've seen poc say that the lighter skin is fine because representation is MORE THAN SKIN COLOR. I do get the fuss over not letting a poc voice the characters though.
One thing that popped up when I heard the argument was that a few months or so, my school has a bridge with chainlink that you could stick plastic cups in (we used it for when a football player died or homecoming) and some people put the n- word on it.
People who followed the school Facebook group knew about it but it didn't get addressed to us students till like a week later. After they made the announcement, I overheard (not eavesdropping but information gathering) some black students say that they didn't really care about it and some even told the teacher that.
The person who made the announcement what a white woman and even then I thought it was stupid that a white person got more offended at that then the black folks did.
It's like that comedian bit (idk who) who offered his mexican gardener tequila and his white sister said 'Why? Cuz he's Mexican?' And the gardener was like 'Why? You have it?' Lmao.
Back more to the topic at hand Hoyo even said that it was just a fictional game, which it is. And fiction isn't always exactly 100% or even 80% accurate. I say us whitey-tighties stop getting our undies in a bunch and let the people Hoyo is trying to represent get the louder voice.
That's all and it kinda got derailed into somewhat of a rant (my mother actually got the brunt of it lmaoo) but that's my thoughts on Natlan and Hoyo and all that. But this is coming from a dyslexic, adhd, emotionally constipated ho who wrote this while have WWIII with a fucking fly on the highway.

Today in "goddamn Diavolo is a pale bitch" also how much colors differ on his sprite from his face to his hand because of the gradient they applied to all the OG sprites. His demon form is more pale then I thought/see mentally. I don't know if Diavolo was supposed to be tan and the OG sprite artist didn't get the notice or everyone else looked at him and thought he was tan lmao Also his right hand on his new Arabian outfit is slightly tanner then his left hand. And his Arabian outfit is the only one of his outfits where his skin is darker but not demon-toned (like the yokai skin is using his demon skin color). anyways this is realization is solely because I started on his redesign's base, and like I do see his skin as slightly darker then canon, but I didn't realize how much a difference my mental image vs canon* there is.
