skyrim modding is a lot of fun HOWEVER. there are a lot of mods that are pretty much entirely dependent on a penis mod that hasn't been updated since 2022.

it's been a while since i last shared the game that currently has my attention, and currently that is outward: definitive edition (dev: nine dot studios). this got long, so i'll put it under the cut. the short of it is that i am in love with this game that is catered to freaks like me in every way!

the game was first released in 2019, and the definitive edition including all dlcs came out in 2022, and i'd say this game was on my radar since 2020-2022, but i never really played it until now. i've been enjoying my time with this game, and what a game it is! it makes me feel like most of my favorites do: scrabbling for victories, being forced to get by the skin of my neck, and having to always play past my mistakes. in many ways it reminds me of favorites such as dragon's dogma, morrowind my heavily modded skyrim, and souls games to an extent, but with survival elements added on to it.

to set the stage, this game puts you in the boots of a gender neutral Just A Guy™ who is saddled with debt incurred by their grandmother and is on the verge of losing their lighthouse home. in aurai, actions that damage the community may incur what is called a blood price, meaning a bloodline may have to pay the price of said actions even decades or centuries removed from the action. the first chapter of your adventure sees you attempting to repay a parcel of the blood price on your bloodline by whatever means possible within 5 days, after your hard work was lost in the same shipwreck that nearly took your life. and off you go to do that. you can approach this goal by whatever means you can come up with and you can also fail to do so, and the game will continue. where i am currently, i managed to barely make the deadline and have been exploring the world. there are currently four factions i can approach in order to advance the plot, but i am taking my time to meet all of them before i make a decision. they each are tackling different issues in aurai at the moment, such as the holy mission's quest to fight against the scourge.

the moment to moment gameplay is very engaging to me. it really is a game that anyone who knows me knows that of course it will appeal to me. navigation reminds me of morrowind with npcs giving you directions and a complete lack of quest markers (or even an indication of where you are in the map! you need to orient yourself using landmarks and road signs). combat is brutal and best avoided at most times. you need to manage your inventory and loadout for the climate and your needs, as well as what you expect to encounter in your journeys, where the weight of your inventory is very important. your stats will become burnt (i.e., you will have a temporarily reduced maximum stamina until rest) the more you use them, greatly emphasizing how you're just a rando. there is magic in this world, but you don't start out with mana needed to cast spells and must perform a difficult pilgrimage to the center of the mountain that dominates the landscape of the first area. and even then, you must sacrifice your precious hp and stamina to build a mana pool. the tradeoff: magic has been absolutely fun and op in my experience. the game rewards preparation and knowing when the fuck to leg it most of all. and if you meet your untimely demise, you're not sent to the last checkpoint. instead, the game rolls one of the appropriate defeat scenarios appropriate to your current situation which can be a boon or a curse (and honestly must have been the inspiration to the alternative death system part of this skyrim mod). the game constantly autosaves, so savescumming isn't a possibility. most of all, you wander in a lovely environment to the sound of bangers.

pictures were only edited to add some small grain and are at the native resolution of the steam deck since it's where i've been playing! i do want to look at it on my laptop too. it also features online and splitscreen co-op, but i haven't tried that out. i do hear it's a great way to approach the game. another thing i really enjoyed learning about is the studio's investment in promoting a crunch-free, ethical philosophy to game development, and extending that over their publishing efforts in order to foster the development of more indie niche games developped ethically.

one of my complaints with vintage story is that the food system is shallow, which is funny since i know i've seen it used as a promotional selling point, boasting something like 'cook over 10k unique meals!'. actually, just looked it up, the 2022 promotional trailer on the front page of their website says it's 350k! but there isn't really a mechanical reason to explore all these combinations. most are functionally identical, boiling (heh) down to just a few basic types. like, there is the 5 food categories, which keeping full gives you more health, which is certainly something. but the astute among you may notice that 5 categories only gives 31 possible combinations a meal could be, a far cry from 350k. on average you have about 11k ways to make each combination of food types. but why?

food and cooking is interwoven with its production, so the different soil nutrients and different temp ranges adds some depth. but really, you get such an abundance of food from every harvest, you only have to figure out one crop from each of the three soil nutrient types and just stick with those. gets too cold/hot, who cares, you already got more food than you know what to do with, no need to rotate crops seasonally. i mean, you get multiple harvests in one season as it is (which ive heard from vets is preferable to when farming times were more realistic). and realistically your grain is going to be flax, because you need the fibers, so that's your k crop, and you can just use bushes or trees for fruit, and since you already need animals to fulfill dairy might as well use the meat for the protein. the only food category left is vegetable, which you can find in both n and p soil nutrient types, with onion being perhaps the best choice because of its longer shelf life. which i guess shelf life is another supposed layer of complexity and depth but as i just mentioned its still just an easy minmax type thing. but also it doesn't matter because its just so easy to have an overabundance of food. so outside of aesthetic or roleplaying reasons, there just isn't really a reason to have real diversity and variety. flax and berry porridge. meat and onion stew. and wash it all down with sheep milk.

to be fair, it's really not an issue exclusive to vs. i felt the same way about rimworld, tho i did find myself having to continue to pay attention to soil type and growing times for longer into a playthrough, even if overall it was more shallow, due to fluctuations in settlement numbers and various disasters. skyrim i guess has different effects you can get, but honestly you can just spam wheels of cheese or w/e to restore health and not worry about any of the rest. plus im not sure if the magical effects type thing would fit vs. maybe temporal or cold resistance. i enjoy playing with the xskills mod, which gives buffs like increased mining speed thru 'quality' meals. but yeah, just doesn't feel like a vanilla vibe. and yeah, without a skill/leveling system in place, effects are more limited. no buffing destruction skill when it doesnt exist...

honestly while i LOVE bg3, the lack of choices for character bodies is a real shame, you can either be a short, thin person or tall muscular person n that sucks. halsin should be built like a bear, gale should have a soft squishy tummy, karlach should be built like rhea ripley, give us more body diversity larian

Halsin is still hairy as all get out for an elf, but unfortunately Larian gave him a 6 pack 😔

I am really disappointed in the lack of options for character customization in general. No sliders, only premade face meshes that you can't mix and match the features of. Only 4 body types for most of the races (half orcs only get the two muscular ones). You can choose your pronouns and genitals but can only be a she/her woman, a he/him man, or a they/them non-binary person (because as we all know non-binary is just the third gender and all nb people use they/them 🙄)

Like... come on this game was in development for how long? And not a single slider? Skyrim came out in 2011 and had sliders. The Sims 4 came out in 2014 and had not only sliders but the option to precisely fine tune certain features to be just perfect. Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed is even a multiplayer game that has better character customization and that came out in 2022.

I shouldn't have to rely on mods to get better representation and diversity :/ I love this game but it isn't without its problems.

Most popular story: “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?” with a total of 366 kudos and 4854 hits! (Though I will admit, I was hit with a kudos bot last year, so my kudos are skewed unfortunately)

Story I’m most proud of: Again, “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?” has to be the one I’m most proud of because it’s my longest one with almost 50k words and I’m not even half-way through what I have planned!

Funniest: It’s a toss up between “What Do Bees Make?” and “More Than Meets the Eye.”  WDBM? was a crack fic I wrote at midnight because I love the ‘What do bees make? Honey? Yes, Dear?’ gag. MTMTE is also funny because I love writing Karliah just growing increasingly exasperated at the stupid and weird things about Duna (my Dragonborn for the fic).

Saddest: "To Live Another Life,” hands down. I wrote this after a friend mentioned how if you go back to the prison cell you start off in with the Alternate Start Skyrim mod, there’s a skeleton in the bed, kinda implying you had died and were reincarnated into your current character. Legit teared up when I wrote it. (I was also (lovingly) shamed by my friend who beta’d it because I wrote the draft in Comic Sans)

Least Popular: “More Than Meets the Eye,” but I expected it because it’s an OC story. However, I am pleased to see I have some subscribers for it! Also, funny thing to note. One of my friends had actually read this fic before I told them I wrote fanfiction.

Most Cringe-worthy: I try to be proud of what I wrote, so I’m gonna take a page out of wordsofawanderingsoul’s book and go with fics that were out of my comfort zone. “To Live Another Life” was definitely something that was new territory because I had never written second-person POV before. It was a fun exercise, and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Favorite opening line(s): From “What Do Bees Make?” “They’re totally into each other.”

“I don’t think they are.”

“Apollo, I can literally hear the affection in their voices,” Athena deadpanned as she pointed to her ear. “Plus, you still can’t accept the fact that Klavier has been flirting with you since day one, so I'm taking your opinion with a grain of salt right now.”

Favorite Closing line(s): Also from “What Do Bees Make?” Neither of the two men said anything for a few seconds, both content to keep their faces hidden.

“Well, Phoenix, I believe that, as some of my students would say, we’ve been ‘had,’” the Professor sighed.

Phoenix groaned in agreement before he slowly removed his hands from his face.

“Okay, you got us.” He moved back to the couch and grabbed Layton’s hand. “Hershel and I are dating.”

Returning to Oblivion

I’ve probably spent more time telling stories about Oblivion than I have actually playing the game. That time I randomly found Dark Brotherhood robes in someone’s basement during a burglary. That time my English teacher spent a good portion of class talking about how cool the vampire questline was. The mess that was horse armor DLC.*

I never even came close to beating the game when I first bought it on Xbox 360. I’d launch it every now and again, sneak around, do some stealing, do some assassinations, and close it down. After I swapped over to PC I ended up buying it in a Steam sale and going all in on mods… racking up maybe 10 hours in the process and never getting past Kvatch (the first phase of the main quest).

I recently came back to the game, and oh man. It’s still so beautiful. And so much of what it does is so very interesting.

Sometimes a game pioneers a new system or a technological innovation that becomes key to the entire experience. It doesn’t always have to the mechanical focal point of the game; I’m talking less about Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis System than I am about Half-Life 2’s physics engine. It’s not the focal point of the game’s core loop, but it’s a key part of the experience and the game’s designers clearly wanted to show off everything it can do.**

For Oblivion, that system is Radiant AI.

Here’s a recent article from the escapist talking about the system in far more detail than I’m planning to here, digging into the development history and some of the insanity that resulted from the original draft build. On a basic level, the system establishes a set of time and need-based routines for every NPC in the game. Around 7pm, you’ll find most of a town’s residents in the inn, socializing and eating. During working hours, they’ll be manning their shops or wandering the streets chatting with ‘friends’.

What I didn’t realize until now is just how many of the game’s quests are designed to center this system. In the last few hours of playing I’ve had quests say:

“Come back and talk to this person when their boss isn’t around.”

“Follow this merchant after he closes up shop to see where he goes.”

“Search this man’s house when he’s not home.”

“You can find the guard captain in the barracks after dark or patrolling the streets during the day.”

So much of the game is designed to show off the Radiant AI system, emphasizing NPC routines and using that structure to enable interesting interactions. It’s honestly super cool and there aren’t many RPGs in 2022 that leverage systems quite like this one.***

And Skyrim’s Solitude looks like a village compared to Oblivion’s Imperial City.

** I think you could argue the point with Half-Life 2; I’ve heard the argument somewhere that the game existed in large part as a tech demo for the Source Engine.

Rikke's mod recommendations

These are all for PC and SSE, but most of them also have a Legendary Edition counterpart. Anniversary players, cope.

At Your Own Pace - Slows down the main quest a bit so you don't feel so rushed to complete it

JS Armored Circlets - Adds armored circlets for if you're like me and hate the look of helmets but still want the extra armor rating

Book Covers Skyrim - Adds unique book covers to literally every book in the game

Floating Health Bars - I hate the way vanilla health bars work (when they decide to) so this helps me tremendously with combat, and even displays enemies level which I'm pretty sure is impossible to see in vanilla

Teldryn Sero Dialogue Expansion - makes my favorite charater even chattier and gives him some synthesized lines as well, including allowing him to read Nerevar at Red Mountain to you and even letting him play the lute if you ask nicely :)

Practical Female Armors - Makes the more abysmal female armors look more like their male counterparts

Impractical Royal Vampire Armor - Adds a titty window to the male vampire royal armor :3

Better Civil War Guards - Makes it so that guards in captured holds retain their unique colors while still being Imperial or Stormcloak soldiers, with seperate files depending on who you side with

Morrowind Armor - Netch Leather - Adds craftable netch leather armor and even puts it on certain Dunmer NPCs including Ralis, Jenassa, and Athis

Freckles and Rough Skin Complexion - makes freckles and rough skin more noticable

Pet The Dog - Lets you pet the dog :) (really only works in 3rd person though)

On one hand, I want to believe that characters like Elisif and Ysolda are short queens because they give off that vibe, but on the other hand I know they're both nords and therefore probably fucking tower over my poor wood elf dragonborn like I bet they're both like 5'10"
