Malleus Facts Part 61: Roaring Drago
Roaring Drago is a tamagotchi-like toy that Lilia bought for Malleus as a souvenir from an unnamed country “back when Silver finally started standing up on his own.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilia says the first time the Roaring Drago pet reached the end of its lifespan Malleus fled the castle to his house, asking what to do.
Malleus says that he had never imagined a toy would be given a finite life span, no matter how fastidiously he cares for it. When the pet disappear in Book 7, leaving an egg in its wake, Silver says that Malleus must be feeling lonely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus responds that there is nothing to grieve over, as it “simply continues to live out its fictional life inside its miniature garden.”
This gives him an idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilia says that Malleus’ magic and lightning tend to break precision tech like smartphones, but Drago has remained as it is a cheap toy with parts that are easy to replace.
Malleus says that it has stopped working a few times, and he always gets it fixed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see an example of this in a vignette where Malleus accidentally gets soaked in the botanical gardens along with Roaring Drago, which stops working as a result. Cater says that it’s ‘the kind thing you can’t just replace when it breaks,” and he has never seen one in stores.
Malleus explains that as it is completely mechanical, not technomancy, he cannot repair it because he does not understand machinery and cannot fix what he doesn’t understand (the same limitation seems to apply to other things Malleus does not understand, such as loneliness). Malleus gets Deuce to fix it, describing it as a treasure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He rewards Deuce with a “super-rare ore," saying that he could always arrange for something more if it is not enough, as it is the least he can offer for Deuce fixing something that is very important to him.
Malleus’ wish for the Starsending is “for Roaring Drago to make a friend,” as he recently learned that wireless communication can be used to let it befriend others, but he does not know anyone else who has one. Malleus reflects, “I suppose simply wishing for Dragon to make a friend won’t actually give him one,” and Idia grants his wish by ordering a second tamagotchi online via Ortho.

Heard this morning (27 March, 2023) A transcript for this piece is not yet up. They're usually up in a couple of days.
~3 minute listen.
This one right-to-repair law got through in just one state, because the lawmaker who introduced it narrowed its focus down from "The right of everybody to repair anything" (too many businesses to lobby against that) to "the right of wheelchair users to repair their own wheelchairs."
On the one hand it's great. On the other hand, it's a reminder of how marginalized we are in society.
Next thing to fight for: the right of farmers to repair their own farm equipment.
One state's gotten started. Forty-nine to go...
Transcript is now up. I've put the full thing under the cut.
MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:
Somewhere on your list of life's annoyances is probably this - manufacturers who won't let customers fix products themselves. Some states are pushing back with right-to-repair laws. Andrew Kenney from Colorado Public Radio visited with one of the first people to use a new right-to-repair law for powered wheelchairs.
(SOUNDBITE OF WHEELCHAIR WHIRRING)
ANDREW KENNEY, BYLINE: Bruce Goguen, who's 68, has used his powered wheelchair for so long that it feels like an extension of himself. He has multiple sclerosis, which affects his speech.
BRUCE GOGUEN: I just think of it as legs, as being my legs.
KENNEY: And that means when he got a new chair last year, every detail had to be right, like the speed of its different modes. His wife, Robin Bolduc, says each one of those adjustments required a visit from an authorized technician. It took weeks.
ROBIN BOLDUC: We would have to call someone, make an appointment, have them come out and say, gee, I'd like to change it so we're walking just a little bit faster.
KENNEY: On one of those visits, Robin realized that the technician wasn't using some specialized device to change the settings. It was a smartphone app. She even found it on the App Store, but it was only available for authorized users.
BOLDUC: Well, I want the app. And he was like, you can't have the app. But I want the app.
KENNEY: That would've been the end of the road, except that Robin and Bruce knew that Colorado's new wheelchair right-to-repair to repair law had just gone into effect. Representative Brianna Titone is the sponsor of the new law. Back in 2021, she originally proposed a much broader bill that would've applied to computers, cellphones and more. That meant an uphill fight against lobbyists for everything from hospitals to tech giants.
BRIANNA TITONE: So I did not win that fight. I lost that fight pretty bad. So that's why the following year, we pared it back to the people who really deserve to have this right. And that were the people who were in wheelchairs.
TITONE: The narrower, wheelchair-focused law passed the legislature last year with the help of advocates like Bruce and Robin. Once it went into effect on New Year's Day, Robin called the manufacturer to demand access to their app.
BOLDUC: They were not prepared. Right. Which - understandably, we're the only state. And it was day one, right? So they were not prepared.
KENNEY: In a committee hearing last year, Tonya Hammatt of National Seating and Mobility, a wheelchair vendor, warned state lawmakers that power wheelchairs are too complex for DIY jobs.
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
TONYA HAMMATT: This bill will allow anyone to perform complex repairs to power wheelchairs, which may lead to negative outcomes for the end user.
KENNEY: But after Robin showed Bruce's wheelchair's maker the text of the law, they agreed, sending out two staffers to get the family set up with the internal software.
BOLDUC: They gave me the code to get into the app. We played around. We programmed.
KENNEY: The couple have been tweaking the wheelchair's different modes, searching for the perfect speed for Robin to jog alongside Bruce or the right settings for a steep walking trail.
GOGUEN: It's wonderful. It's very wonderful.
KENNEY: And their success could have broader effects. They've been told the manufacturer is working on a public-facing app for everyone else who wants to use it. The company didn't respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, right-to-repair laws are gaining momentum around the country, says Kevin O'Reilly of the advocacy group PIRG.
KEVIN O'REILLY: We think that this first bill was the crack in the dam that we needed.
KENNEY: That includes a new bill from Representative Titone that guarantees similar rights for farmers to repair their increasingly high-tech tractors and other equipment. It's poised to clear the state legislature in a matter of weeks. For NPR News, I'm Andrew Kenney.

When you need to drop off your tech devices for a repair, how confident are you that they won't be snooped on? CBC's Marketplace took smartphones and laptops to repair stores across Ontario — including large chains Best Buy and Mobile Klinik — and found that in more than half of the documented cases, technicians accessed intimate photos and private information not relevant to the repair. Marketplace dropped off devices at 20 stores, ranging from small independent shops to medium-sized chains to larger national chains, after installing monitoring software on the devices. In total, 16 stores were recorded. (At four stores, the tracking software didn't log anything, or the stores didn't appear to turn the devices on.) Technicians at nine stores accessed private data, including one technician who not only viewed photos but copied them onto a USB key. "These results are frightening," said Hassan Khan, associate professor in the school of computer science at the University of Guelph. "It's looking through information, searching for data on users' devices, copying data off the device.... it's as bad as it gets."

hi doggo! i keep wondering, as technology develops, would typewriter heads be eventually replaced with laptops, and would landline/cell phone heads be replaced with smartphones?
I could see it potentially happening one day, but no time soon. There already are laptop + smartphone heads of course (the demo title screen shows someone with a laptop head!), but the irony is that most people already have smartphones and laptops, so they're not really 100% necessary.
There's a lot of complex reasons why rotary phone + typewriter heads never died out, but a core reason why they never ended up being replaced by a similar, but more useful device (say a TV head or something with a screen) is that humans are beings of habit and that most people won't get their head changed unless it's super important to some part of their character. Phones and typewriters are the default given at birth, after all, because it's always been that way.
You could argue that the phone heads aren't really useful for the same reasons smartphone/laptop heads wouldn't be either, for much the same reason (the final DT route has a throwaway line from Karen where she brings up her smartphone) but given that inorganic heads are no longer the default (by Crown's design, of course), people tend to go for the default... unless they have a reason to change.
Lots of people do, of course, but for the average person, it's an expensive procedure to get done to you, and very difficult to perform on oneself. This is why you could view the head as more of a display of complete identity than a completely 1:1 replacement for gender. Most people with atypical heads in Dialtown have their entire lives structured around their head in some way.
Practically, vacuum tube + landline technology has the obvious advantage of being far cheaper to maintain/repair. This is the main second reason why modern tech heads haven't really caught on.
When I worked in antiques, I spent a lot of time with an old repairman who specialized in vacuum tube TV/radio repairs and he told me how circuit-boards basically annihilated his old job. Back then, you could be a repairman as a trade and actually change out individual parts when something went bad. As long as you understood how a TV or radio worked, you could repair any device by isolating the part that wasn't working and then swap it out. Nowadays, tech is made to be used for a few years and then discarded outright + replaced.
Gabby mentions in her store that poorer folk have to opt for doing self repair sometimes, in the same way poorer folks in OUR world might have to cut their own hair or god forbid, pull out their own teeth, if they go rotten. So, head-type (to a large extent) can be tied to class too, since a newer device (if it went faulty) would be a nightmare to repair, and it WOULD need to be repaired eventually, as laptops + phones tend to slow down somewhat in only a few years of operation and even deteriorate to the point of being obsolete in less than a decade! Not ideal for the thing housing your brain, no?
Hope this helps!!!

A3! Event Translation - memory of toys (5/11)
Tumblr media
Homare: Fumu, so that is why I have been chosen for this job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Citron: Homare is a genius, a magician of the letters. I am sure he will come up with wonderful lyrics!
Homre: That's right, that's right, as expected of Citron-kun. You can truly understand.
Tumblr media
Yuki: No, there had to have been other options.
Citron: I made a demo tape! I'd like for you to listen to it first.
Homare: Ooh, please let me listen to it!
Tumblr media
Yuki: Huh? When did you have the time to make something like that.
Citron: May the music start ♪
Music Player: ♪~~♪♪~~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuki: How should I put this......
Homare: What a weird song.
Citron: I don't want to be told that by Homare!
Homare: However, Citron's passion was conveyed.
Tumblr media
Homare: So this is a theme song for a toy store? I wonder what kind of stage the toy store would make for.
Citron: I took a picture with my smartphone. This is it!
Homare: Ooh. what a wonderful store! Very nice, I like it!
Citron: The toys on displays are very lovely! There are rare items too.
Yuki: That's putting it nicely. To put it bluntly, they're all just leftovers that don't sell and are sitting on shelves.
Homare: Fumu..... Oya, what's this in the picture over here?
Homare: Ooh, this is a character from that book!
Tumblr media
Yuki: Which book is it a character of?
Homare: He's a character from a book I used to read a lot when I was young. It's really nostalgic for me. I loved him too.
Homare: I had no idea that such a stuffed animal could exist.
Yuki: (....I wonder if Arisu also has childhood memories like Tenma's)
Yuki: Did you also buy toys and stuff when you were younger, Arisu?
Homare: Hrm, me?
Homare: That's right.... I don't really remember being given any tous like the ones in the picture here.....
Yuki: (The same pattern as Tenma's)
Homare: Instead, I received lots of books.
-------------------------
The bookshelves in my house were lined with books that my mother had also read when she was a child. As a small child, I enjoyed reading them as well.
Tumblr media
Apparently, my mother was moved by the sight of me laughing while reading a book, or being deep in thought and making serious faces as a child.
When I had finished reading every book on that bookshelf, my mother took me along to the large bookstore.
-------------------------
I was told I could choose whichever books I liked, but there were so many books that I wasn't able to choose and was put into a difficult position.
Tumblr media
"Mother, please choose for me"
"Really? Well then..."
As she said this, my mother took a single book off the shelf.
"It may still be a little difficult for Homare to read, but it is a very wonderful book"
That book my mom bought me became an important treasure, and I read it many times.
------------------------
Homare: That book was one of my favorites. Even when it got torn, I got it repaired and made it an important treasure.
Yuki: You didn't buy a new one? Is it out of print or something?
Homare: The book itself has been reprinted many times, and is still a story loved by people all over the world.
Homare: But for me, I have a special attachment to that one book my mother gave me. It's an irreplaceable book.
Yuki: Hmmmm......
Citron: What a wonderful memory.
Homare: That's right. The memories from those books are important elements that have helped shape who I am today.
Yuki: .....

My Family's 2010s Digital Camera (Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS) [feat. my Paper Dolls]
DeviantART version → [CLICK ME!]
Hello, May! 🌏☀️ Unfortunately, I cannot continue my upcoming and latest "PC Upgrade Project". The good news was, that I've already worked on it, but I need to adjust the size for the comparison, as well as splitting it into two videos instead of one to reduce memory size, and even timing the subtitles (which is important for the latter). So, my plan was to be submitted by July of 2024. On the bright side, I have another item review that has yet to be revealed, this June. 🙂 Nonetheless, onto my month's share. 😊
BREAKING NEWS: Just recently, yesterday [on May 30th, 2024] my current Power Supply Unit blew up, making my custom PC desktop useless without any power source! 💥😨 As of today, We send it to the "Computer Repair Shop" for a replacement. 🖥️🔧😓 Ouch! Luckily, it was fixed the next day, as in TODAY! And I cost a lot from my earning funds. Double ouch! 💵🤕 So, that topic deserves another month, I suppose...
Now, onto my topic...
• So, another camera from my parent's shelves, and it's the latest abandoned camera, as of 2024. The "Canon EOS 1000D" 😊📸, also known as the "EOS Rebel XS" is a DSLR camera that debuted in June 2008. This old professional camera possessed a 10.1-megapixel camera, a detachable lens like other DSLR cams do, and a whole bunch of features that only professional DSLR cam photographers could understand. Also, unlike the Sony Cybershot's exclusive "Sony" Memory Stick for photo storage, Canon uses the universal SD Card to store photos, on any memory brand used such as Sandisk, Transcend, Lexar, etc... For megapixels comparison, the 90s Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z has "2.1", the previous topic of Sony DSC-T70 has "8.1", and what about the "Focus-35"? Well, let's say it's not as level as the 90s Olympus camera that we've owned. 🤔🤷‍♀️
• So, do you have a story about this camera? Well, there's one I remembered, and it's based on the true story. ☝😊📖 I was 18 years old (late adolescence, may I add) while I was in High School in the year 2011 (3rd year High School). I went to a local 7-Eleven store when I saw a raffle promo poster. For the prize? A bunch of awesome stuff, including the Canon camera itself (the EOS Rebel XS). And since I'm 18, I'm qualified the participate by buying consumed-related stuff from the aforementioned convenience store daily. After the promo ended and my 3rd year of High School ended, a rider came to our house to receive a letter from 7-Eleven, only to find out that my father was the winner of the promo instead of me, and I was shocked. 😲 Damn... That winning camera should've been ME, and I used this cool camera to pursue my future career as a professional photographer; which sadly, did not happen. 😥 Regardless, in the end, I'm happy that my father won the prize, so I have to congratulate him. 👏😊 And the rest was history, we have SO MANY photo moments that we've shared on our main social media(s), unlike our previous digicams. We've been using it for a few years, until 2018(?) (as far as I know). When the camera itself started to get old, bugs were unbeknownst inside the lens (seriously, where did that come from? 🐜), and the built-in flash was unable to work properly. Making use of itself. Also, the repair cost for our camera was expensive, so we can't afford it. 💵😬 Yup, another camera bites the dust (I guess). 😥 And so, we've decided to switch to smartphone cameras over our bulky DSLR camera. 📱➡📷 After all, the cams from smartphones we're superior to those before depending on what brand we've used. Plus, it is ultra-portable, too.
• For ME, however, I would love to use the traditional digicams (big or small) over smartphones because it had a superior quality image over modern phones. 📷➡📱 Yeah, Apple and Samsung had overtaken, but true camera brands like Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm (the trio of Japanese camera brands 🇯🇵📷. Don't forget Sony, by the way.) are already stronger than before; innovate after innovate for the professional photographers and content vloggers. The big boy cameras never gets old, and they're still producing them, to this very day. 📸🎥😁 However, with the rise of "Action Cameras" (not to mention Flying Camera Drones") will soon be surpassed, in the digital image industry. So, I'm not sure who'll die first. We may never know...🤔
• On the plus side, my paper dolls appreciate my story. So, here's my final moment before I put this cool memorable DSLR Camera on the wardrobe. 😊📷📸
Well, that's all for now! And do you have any good "item" memories from the 2000s to 2010s, like mine? Type it down in the reply section! 😊
If you haven't seen my related camera throwbacks, and my previous topic, then I'll provide some links down below. ↓ 😉
• My Family's 2000s Digital Camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-T70) [Apr 30th, 2024]
• Another 90s Camera: Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z [Jan 29th, 2024]
• My Family’s Old Film Camera (from the 90s) [Aug 29th, 2023]

My favorite running thing (I don't think it's ever been played as a joke so it feels wrong to call it a gag) in the Pikmin series is how Hocotations and Koppaites are both space-faring species but have somehow never discovered certain extremely basic forms of technology.
Tumblr media
This is a toy robot that looks like it was manufactured in the 1980s.
Tumblr media
This is a speaker. Not directly confirmed, but the phrasing of the line REALLY makes it sound like they didn't have any kind of speaker system before now.
Tumblr media
This is a cell phone. Not even a smartphone, but like an ancient-ass Nokia phone. Somehow this is the most powerful form of sensor technology Koppai has EVER encountered.
I can't find a transcript of the line on the wiki and don't feel like playing the whole game again for one line, but you later get an upgraded replacement for this which is even MORE powerful... and it's a flip phone.
Tumblr media
This is an ERASER. Hocotate has no form of rubber, or any equivalent material that's really good at insulating against electricity.
And my favorite one of all:
Tumblr media
This is a LIGHT BULB.
(That last one is technically a plot hole because there was a ship part in Pikmin 1 that was a light bulb in all but name, but still)
Somehow these people managed to become a space-faring civilization with access to tech that can produce infinite energy, harvest gluons and positrons to generate fuel, automatically repair any device they're attached to, create artificial intelligences that are as smart as people, warp faster than the speed of light, and shrink down physical matter to store massive amounts of stuff in the carto hold - without ever having discovered a good electricity-insulating material, while their metal sucks so much ass that a robot toy is denser than their understanding of physics should allow, and while their sensors are weaker than that of a cell phone that looks like it's from the 80s.

re: constantine and technology, he's so bad at it that it's comical.
he didn't have a whole lot of exposure to its evolution outside of his friendship with quantum magic computer nerd ritchie simpson, and now he's old and it's everywhere and he doesn't fucking get it. he's awful with computers, the only washing machines that haven't broken on him are the ones at the laundromat, he got a smartphone once to look important but put a demon inside it to do shit For him (rip the vestibulian), he set up a website once and never looked at it again. makes him very cranky when everyone tells him to update his arsenal because he's tried, man, and it's hard.
on top of your basic old guy stuff, technology doesn't seem to like him, either. (certainly doesn't help that he has a habit of throwing, kicking, smacking, or smashing tech that doesn't work when he needs it to.) vending machines habitually break down around him, chip-and-pin machines at the shops throw up errors, and he has set off more than a few metal detectors just by being in proximity.
there's some argument that can be made about magic interfering with technology, two matrices that should never have intersected etc., but ritchie simpson is Right There combining the two with ease, and even if he's just a quantum theoretical genius, i do think that maguses in the modern age would have figured out ways to let the two meet/marry by now. so what it just comes down to is, either constantine is so bad at it that he breaks everything he touches, or technodemon ritchie is taking sweet, sweet revenge on him from hell. either is equally funny to me.
the majority of his begrudging flirtation with technology comes down to:
chunky dell laptop computer. he uses the same password for almost everything, and the few different ones are all written on a post-it note in a desk drawer. the one thing he's got going for him here is that ever since ritchie hacked his bank account, he's added a couple entangling magic firewalls that will set fire to a hard drive if you try to get in without the authentication invocation to disarm them.
cardboard box full of flip phones, busted smartphones, and sim cards. he breaks/loses so many phones that it's just easier to stock up ahead of time. the flip phones are easy, he buys them off ebay; the smartphones are more of a hunt-and-gather situation. he's not above rinsing out the odd phone repair store/apple store in times of great need, sorry to everyone who needed those things, though he does try to stick to high-end ones so there's a better chance that he's just temporarily denting some rich prick's wallet instead of actually inconveniencing people. he's got free and unlimited network coverage in london, thanks to his friendship with map, but that's highly dependent on whether or not map is pissed at him at the time.
walkman. they were invented while he was in ravenscar and he couldn't really stand listening to the tapes he had for a while after that (reminded him of the band and what happened), but cheryl got him the tenth anniversary model later for christmas and it was well-loved. he gave that one to gemma in 1991 when he was dying, and when he was healed, chas hunted down another one for his birthday.
5gb iPod that holds a hell of a lot more than that, thank you magic. lifted off an ex that was trying to kill him while he was in america, right when it had just come out.
unused e-reader. he was trying to be savvy and up-to-date, but the physical stuff just works for him better. he keeps meaning to give it to chas, but keeps forgetting it exists.

Samsung vs Apple: Why Samsung is Better than Apple
Tumblr media
The world of smartphones is dominated by two major players: Samsung and Apple. Both companies produce high-quality devices with cutting-edge features, but they cater to different user preferences. This blog explores why some users favor Samsung phones over Apple's iPhones.
It's important to note that before diving into the world of repairing these complex devices, consider a mobile repairing institute in Delhi like Hi-Tech Institute, an ISO and MSME certified institute with over 20 years of experience, can equip you with the skills to diagnose and repair both Samsung and Apple devices! Now, let's delve into the reasons why some users choose Samsung:
1. Android vs iOS: Openness and Customization
A key difference lies in the operating system. Samsung phones run on Android, an open-source platform that allows for greater customization. Android users can personalize their phones extensively, from launchers and themes to widgets and icon packs. This level of control appeals to users who enjoy tailoring their devices to their specific needs and preferences.
2. Hardware Innovation: Pushing the Boundaries
Samsung is known for its constant innovation in hardware. They've been at the forefront of features like foldable displays, high refresh rate screens, powerful processors, and multiple rear cameras. For users who prioritize cutting-edge technology and features, Samsung phones can be a compelling choice.
3. Wider Price Range: Options for Every Budget
Samsung offers a wider range of smartphones at various price points. This caters to users with different budgets. From the high-end Galaxy S series to the budget-friendly Galaxy A series, there's a Samsung phone for everyone. In contrast, Apple's iPhones tend to be positioned in the premium segment.
4. Expandable Storage: Avoiding Storage Woes
Many Samsung phones offer expandable storage via microSD cards. This allows users to easily increase storage capacity without having to upgrade their entire phone when they run out of space. For users who store a lot of photos, videos, or music on their phones, this flexibility is a major advantage.
5. Dual SIM Functionality: Staying Connected with Multiple Numbers
A feature often found in Samsung phones is dual SIM functionality. This allows users to have two separate phone numbers active on one device. This is particularly convenient for users who need to keep their personal and professional lives separate, or for those who travel frequently and want to use a local SIM card.
6. Headphone Jack: A Reliable Classic
While Apple removed the headphone jack from its iPhones several years ago, Samsung has continued to include it in most of its phones. This is a plus for users who still prefer wired headphones for listening to music or making calls.
7. Fast Charging Technology: Power Up Quickly
Samsung's fast charging technology allows users to recharge their phones quickly and efficiently. This is a major advantage for users who are on the go and need to get their phone back up and running quickly.
8. Integration with Samsung Ecosystem: A Connected Experience
For users who own other Samsung products like tablets, smartwatches, and laptops, Samsung phones offer a seamless integration experience. Users can easily connect their devices and share data or control them from one another.
Tumblr media
The Final Word
The choice between Samsung and Apple ultimately comes down to personal preference. If you prioritize an open and customizable Android experience, cutting-edge hardware features, and a wider price range, Samsung might be the better fit for you. However, if you value a premium build quality, a user-friendly closed ecosystem, and seamless integration with Apple products, iPhones might be your preference. Regardless of your choice, remember that a mobile repairing course in Delhi from a reputable institute like Hi-Tech Institute can equip you with the skills to troubleshoot and repair both Samsung and Apple devices, opening doors to exciting career opportunities in the mobile repair industry.

Recycling: Raw materials from urban mines are becoming increasingly important
Tumblr media
Vast amounts of steel, copper and numerous other metals are built into everyday objects - and after their original use they are an important source of raw materials.
When the smartphone has had its day, it often ends up in a drawer - "one can always use it again". According to the Bitkom[1] digital association[2], around 210 million old cell phones were stored in households in Germany last year. 87 percent of the citizens had at least one discarded mobile phone. That number has more than doubled since 2015.
The drawer cell phones belong to the so-called urban mine. In contrast to the classic raw material mine, it describes the man-made raw material deposits: "All goods that we humans have ever created," explains Britta Bookhagen from the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR)[3]. These so-called anthropogenic stock or urban mines[4] include bridges, cars, houses, washing machines - and also smartphones. Gold, copper and nickel can be extracted from mobile phones, for example, and steel in particular from cars and bridges.
When strategically considering the urban mine, it is initially irrelevant "whether the goods are still being actively used and will only be released in the foreseeable future or whether they have already reached the end of their useful life," writes the Federal Environment Agency (UBA)[5] on its website. Metals and construction minerals in particular often remain in infrastructure, buildings and everyday goods for a long time. "Over the decades, enormous stocks of material have accumulated in this way, which hold great potential as a future source of secondary raw materials."
Large dependence on import
According to the UBA, the German economy uses around 1.3 billion tons of materials domestically every year - this includes products such as cars as well as pure raw materials. The Federal Republic of Germany is heavily dependent on imports, especially for metal and energy raw materials, as can be seen from the latest BGR raw materials annual report from December[6]. Especially when it comes to newly mined metals, Germany is almost completely dependent on imports.
But: the raw materials in the world are finite, international competition is growing, costs are rising - as is the pressure on natural areas and their ecosystems. The recycling of metals or building materials, for example, can therefore help to conserve the earth's natural resources - and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions, groundwater pollution and biodiversity loss, says Felix Müller, who is responsible for urban mining at the Federal Environment Agency.
And an expansion doesn't just help the environment: "The vision is to become less dependent on raw material imports, rather we should become real raw material producers with secondary extraction. In this way, we can also open up a new economic field,” says Müller. According to him, the anthropogenic stocks of Germany are enriched with around 550 million tons of material per year.
Far from sustainability
The expert says: "As long as the material stocks are growing so much, we are still far away from a sustainable circular economy. But the growing stock holds the immense potential to close material cycles much better in the future than we have been able to do so far. We now have to set the course and adapt the framework conditions.” The federal government is therefore currently working on a national urban mining strategy.
"Mining" in the urban mine is not done with a bucket wheel excavator and pickaxe, but through recycling - and thus to a certain extent it is also a task for society as a whole, says the geologist Bookhagen. But she makes it clear: "Urban mining refers to products at the end of their lives." Only when all other ways, such as repairing or reselling, have been exhausted, does recycling start - "please don't put it in the drawer," says Bookhagen.
There is currently a veritable pot of gold in the German drawers. In a study from 2020, Bookhagen and her colleagues came to the conclusion that the around 200 million smartphones in German drawers contain around 3.4 tons of gold, 1300 tons of copper and 520 tons of nickel.
Material for ten years of production
Researchers at the Institute of German Economics in Cologne[7] calculated in a report published on Monday[8] that the value of the metal in unused cell phones is around 240 million euros. With a view to the material value of the smartphones sold in 2021 of 23.5 million euros, the drawer phones could cover the material requirements for new smartphones for more than ten years. However, the authors limit the calculation themselves: the reality is different, "since not all drawer cell phones are recycled and are also completely recyclable".
That is exactly the greatest difficulty in urban mining, says the expert Bookhagen: "It is very difficult to estimate which raw materials will come back to us, and how and when." On the one hand, it is not at all clear how much steel or aluminum was used in a car or a washing machine 50 years ago, nor how it makes the most sense to recover and process it. Better data is needed here. "One thing is certain: the urban warehouse is growing and has a high recyclable content."
The extraction of raw materials from the urban mine has a lot of potential to become less dependent on raw material imports and rising costs, says Bookhagen. Germany and Europe are doing well compared to other parts of the world. "But one mustn't forget: even if we could get everything out of the urban mine, that wouldn't cover our raw material requirements," the expert continues. The hunger for raw materials is too great for that.

My Yearend Techs & Misc. Items Summary - 2023
Hello! So ummm... 2023 was a semi-disaster, in my opinion. As if 2022 wasn't good enough my mood, though. 📅😟 At first glance, I was slightly smooth ride in the beginning of 2023, but with bad sightings and throwing toxics at me (not really, IRL), I went into downward spiral... 😞😭 But, I could always get up, dust myself, and once again moved on my life to see what my future install in 2024. 💪 #KeepMovingForward
Anyway, enough for that, let’s talk about my ‘My Yearend Techs and Misc. Items Summary 2023’! And here are my choices per month so far, both ongoing & done topics:
• JAN - Redragon Hylas H260 Gaming Headset (done): Unlike my Redragon Keyboard from 2022 review, I haven't used it since my initial test because I have my current wireless headphone (the ZNT SoundFit) and my go-to QKZ AK7 Pro w/ a replacement wire as my main source of listening music/watching videos on any media devices (namely, my mom's laptop and my smartphone). But, don't get me wrong, it is a cool headset, an affordable price of less than $20, and the sound quality was A-Okay for some gamers (like me). For now, my gaming headset was still inside the box, along with the tote bag. And if my current headset was finally decommissioned, then I'll bring it in as my new main PC headset, not carrying it outside.
• FEB - UGREEN Multifunctional Card Reader USB 3.0 (done): So far, my UGREEN Card Reader is the only source as my main both USB thumb drive and of course my main card reader under one item. Right now, I'm transferring my precious screenshots from my sibling's PS4 Pro console.
• MAR - R.I.P. My Old Anker Powerport 2: The first of three abandoned items is my good old Anker Powerport 2, who I ordered it from an expensive website (galleon.ph) in Jan 2017. Although, it worked sometimes, it didn't last long. But hey, after all the new features for the USB charger has changed. So, I guess I need a new one, someday. Whether a different brand or the same as my old one. Who knows?
• APR - Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 Drive (done): Ah yes, my first ever owned NVMe memory stick, and its a 100% genuine brand, no less. While the alternative physical HDDs are still produced, so does the NVMe Solid State Drives, and also the SATA Solid Drives, too. But, since my Motherboard had a proprietary M.2 slot, it'll be an opportunity for me to switch from the bulky 3.5mm HDD to a miniature Solid State Drive, with a much faster speed rate than the regular alternative one's slower paced. And let me tell ya, it delivers to my custom PC!
• MAY - R.I.P. My HD (or HDD): Speaking of, here's the second of three abandoned items that we're sadly didn't make a 2nd life. And you know, this is my most heart-breaking moment of 2023. Why? Well, its hard to explain... All I can say is, that I messed up a year ago. So much so, I need to moved on and I'll be try as I can. Unless if I have a occupation with a decent payout, then I might chance to save it. For now, though, it is still buried inside the carton box, with a anti-static plastic to prevent interior damage. Please, go to my link for my entire reason.
• JUN - My PC Cooling Upgrades (done): So, as if my NVMe memory stick wasn't enough, I also purchased two PC item upgrades for my custom PC, and it was a success for... Less than a day. Why? Well, let's proceed our next one. Shall we?
• JUL - R.I.P. My GPU Card: Well this one... The third (and last) abandoned item. To this day, my custom PC remain semi-decommissioned because of this outdated (MSi) GPU card/Graphics card, who sadly didn't go the distance after 7 years... Looks like, my custom PC didn't make it in 2023. But fear not, my precious files on my NVMe drive still intact, so not all is lost. I'll be bringing my custom PC to a good quality computer repair store, this January 2024. I promise.
• AUG - My Family's Old Film Camera from the 90s: Time for a little throwback with this awesome looking 90s film camera. Man, I can't believe it is still pristine condition after few decades to unused, it deserves a quality custom case than putting back inside the box with assorted of random items. Pls, go to link for my explanation.
• SEPT - A Nokia Vintage Phone from the 90s: Another 90s item is this gorgeous ancient phone from Nokia (model 104 - circa 1992). It far too late to fix this despite its age, but it still memorable for my parents, nonetheless. Pls, go to link for more information.
• OCT - My Fake Samsung 870 EVO Solid State Drive (done): While my 970 EVO Plus was 100% genuine Samsung brand, the 870 EVO Solid State Drive was the exact opposite! And let me tell ya, there are a lot of 'Red Flags' on this 870 EVO wannabe here. Though, this isn't my first fake Samsung item that I've ordered. If you want more info then please click the link (from above).
• NOV - My first Samsung non-genuine item (done): And here's my first encountered a fake Samsung item from an online app store (namely, Lazada PH). And like before it, there are also 'Red Flags' beneath this silicon memory flash chip. Trust me, I compared it with my genuine one, so please go to link for my entire information.
• DEC - My Audio Wire Replacement (for QKZ AK6 Pro) (done): And lastly was this one. I could thank my adorable pet rabbit named 'Pepper' for chewing my original cable wire without notice, and to that was on me letting my pet rabbit chewing on while I was asleep. Thus, I've purchased an audio wire replacement, and its fa r better than the original one albeit the sound quality very identical as before.
IMPORTANT NOTE: No 'Honorable Mentions', this year.
Well, that’s the end of my “My Yearend Techs and Misc. Items 2023”. We’ll see you in 2024.
🥳 Happy new years eve to all, and as always, stay safe (just in case)!😷
If you want to see my 2020 to 2022 version of that, then I’ll provide some links down below.↓

Best Online Electronics Store | Top Quality & Fast Shipping
In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, finding the best online electronics store can be the key to successfully managing your projects, repairs, or gadget upgrades. Whether you're an electronics enthusiast, a professional engineer, or someone looking for a specific gadget, choosing an online store that offers high-quality products with fast and reliable shipping is crucial. This article will explore the essential features that make an online electronics store stand out and highlight the benefits of buying electronics online.
Why Choose an Online Electronics Store?
The rise of e-commerce has revolutionized the way people shop for electronics. Instead of driving to physical stores, waiting in lines, or dealing with limited stock, customers can now browse, compare, and purchase their desired components and gadgets from the comfort of their homes. Here are several key reasons why choosing an online electronics store is beneficial:
1. Wide Selection of Products
One of the biggest advantages of shopping at an online electronics store is the extensive selection of products. Unlike physical stores, which may have limited shelf space, online stores can offer thousands of items, from simple resistors to high-end laptops. Whether you're looking for a specific microcontroller, a new smartphone, or obscure components, online stores are more likely to have what you need in stock.
2. Easy Comparison Shopping
Online electronics stores make it easier to compare products and prices. With just a few clicks, customers can view multiple brands and models, read reviews, and compare features side by side. This ability to research and compare helps buyers make informed decisions, ensuring they get the best value for their money.
3. Convenience
Perhaps the most obvious advantage of online shopping is convenience. You can shop at any time, from anywhere, without the need to leave your home. This flexibility is particularly useful for those with busy schedules or those who live in areas without access to specialized electronics shops.
4. Competitive Pricing
Online electronics stores often offer lower prices than brick-and-mortar stores because they have fewer overhead costs, such as rent and utilities. Additionally, many online stores frequently run promotions, sales, and discounts, allowing customers to score great deals. You can also easily compare prices across different websites to ensure you are getting the best possible deal.
5. Fast and Reliable Shipping
One of the biggest concerns when ordering online is shipping speed. Fortunately, many top online electronics stores offer fast and reliable shipping options. Whether you need your components in a day or two for an urgent project, or you can wait a little longer for free shipping, online stores give you flexibility. Some platforms also provide tracking information, so you know exactly when your package will arrive.
6. Product Reviews and Ratings
One of the most powerful tools online electronics stores offer is customer reviews and ratings. These provide insights into how a product performs in real-world situations. For someone shopping for a specific electronic component or gadget, reading reviews from other users can be invaluable in making an informed purchase decision.
Key Features of the Best Online Electronics Stores
Now that we’ve explored the benefits of shopping online for electronics, let’s dive into what makes certain stores stand out. There are several important features to look for when deciding where to shop:
1. User-Friendly Interface
A well-designed, easy-to-navigate website is essential for any online electronics store. It should be simple for users to search for specific products, filter results based on criteria like brand, price, and availability, and quickly access customer reviews. A smooth, intuitive shopping experience can make all the difference, especially for users who may not be tech-savvy.
2. Detailed Product Descriptions
The best online electronics stores provide comprehensive product descriptions that include technical specifications, dimensions, and compatibility information. These details are especially important for those purchasing electronic components for specific projects or repairs, as a missing or incorrect specification can result in buying the wrong part.
3. Fast Shipping and Delivery Options
Fast shipping is a huge factor when choosing where to shop online. Top stores offer a variety of shipping options, including expedited shipping for those who need their items quickly. They also provide clear shipping policies and delivery timelines so that customers know when to expect their orders.
4. Customer Support
Reliable customer support is another hallmark of a great online electronics store. Whether it's live chat, email, or phone support, customers should be able to reach out for help with product selection, order issues, or technical support. Stores that invest in strong customer service build trust and encourage repeat business.
5. Secure Payment Options
Given the increasing prevalence of cyber threats, online shoppers are understandably concerned about payment security. The best online electronics stores offer multiple secure payment options, including credit cards, digital wallets, and even cryptocurrency in some cases. They also use encryption and other security measures to protect customers' financial information.
6. Return and Warranty Policies
Sometimes, despite careful research, a product may not meet your expectations. A fair return policy ensures that customers can return or exchange items if necessary. Furthermore, offering warranties on products like electronics is a good indicator that the store stands behind the quality of its offerings.
Popular Categories Available at Online Electronics Stores
Online electronics stores typically offer a vast range of products, catering to everyone from hobbyists to professionals. Here are some of the most popular categories available:
1. Consumer Electronics
This category includes gadgets like smartphones, laptops, tablets, headphones, and smartwatches. The demand for these devices has skyrocketed as they become essential tools for communication, entertainment, and productivity.
2. Electronic Components
For those working on DIY electronics projects or repairs, online stores offer a wide variety of components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, microcontrollers, and more. Stores that cater to engineers and hobbyists often carry both popular and hard-to-find parts.
3. Home Appliances
Many online electronics retailers also sell home appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and microwaves. These products often come with detailed specifications and user reviews, making it easier to choose the right one for your needs.
4. Gaming Gear
Gaming enthusiasts can find consoles, gaming laptops, accessories, and peripherals like controllers, headsets, and keyboards in most online electronics stores. Many of these products come with reviews and performance benchmarks, which are particularly important for gamers.
5. Office Electronics
For remote workers and business owners, online electronics stores offer a range of office supplies, including printers, scanners, computers, and networking equipment. High-quality office electronics are essential for maintaining productivity in a home or professional office setting.
Tips for Choosing the Best Online Electronics Store
When choosing an online electronics store, keep these tips in mind to ensure you get the best products and service:
Check Customer Reviews: Always read reviews of both the products and the store itself. This will give you insights into the quality of the products, shipping reliability, and customer service.
Compare Prices: Don’t settle for the first price you see. Use comparison tools or visit multiple websites to ensure you are getting the best deal.
Look for Promotions: Many stores offer seasonal sales, discounts, or coupon codes. Sign up for newsletters to stay informed about the latest deals.
Examine the Return Policy: Ensure the store offers a reasonable return and refund policy, especially for high-ticket items or items you’re not entirely sure about.
Shipping Costs and Times: If you need your items quickly, make sure the store offers expedited shipping options. Also, check if they provide free shipping for orders over a certain amount.
Conclusion
Finding the best online electronics store requires balancing product selection, pricing, convenience, and customer service. By focusing on stores that offer top-quality products with fast and reliable shipping, you can enjoy a hassle-free shopping experience. Whether you’re upgrading your gadgets, working on a DIY project, or stocking up on components, the right store will make all the difference in meeting your electronic needs efficiently.
