More paranatural au: the original club hanging out, before Viktor (the new kid) joins. I still haven't decided what to call the club; using the name from the webcomic feels lazy, but it's hard to top "The [paranatural] Activity Club". Also: Allison's main goal in life is to snark at Five. Color her shocked that he could get any woman to marry him.

Anyway, the fun part of this au is that since ghosts and spirits are real, and they possess objects, Five can both be married to a mannequin AND Delores can be real. Best of both worlds! Stay tuned to get to see her 👀

After recently re-listening to the ending of Questionable Measures (Ep. 31-33), I realized there was something that I hadn’t really thought about before. This lead me to a question, and I’m very curious to know: Was Lorraine supposed to appear again? Because I kinda got that impression.

The opposite, actually!

When I introduced Lorraine, the idea was that she'd be a one arc villain, but I was open to that changing, which is the case for a lot of story elements that aren't tied into the overall plot - I'll throw them out there with a basic structure and see what happens.

This all changed when I made the (improvised) choice to have Lorraine dump Hopper. Because for all of the terrible things Lorraine has done to Hopper, leaving him is (in the moment) the most devastating. So while she tells MISHA she'll see them again, the significance is less "Lorraine's coming back" and more "Lorraine won't be coming back for Hopper."

For Hopper, Crime and Courtship is all about exploring the absence of Lorraine, who he had unwittingly associated with the most important parts of his identity. I had a plot idea where the Jagged Dream messed with Hop by tricking him into thinking Lorraine was on the ship, resulting in him getting kidnapped instead of Ness, but in the end I decided to streamline it and just let Hop wallow in this newfound emptiness.

There definitely was opportunity and value in Lorraine returning after Hop reclaimed his identity, especially as a way for him to show his growth, but in the end I decided that having Hop reject Apocrita Lorraine was the most straightforward way to hit that narrative beat. I'm not quite sure how a Lorraine return would have worked, because to me, the way to beat Lorraine and really get under her skin is simply to ignore her (as shown by Cartesian, where the town was devastated specifically because Hop tried to stop Lorraine).

It's really interesting to me because there's a lot to Lorraine - despite her simple motivation, the world surrounding Lorraine is vibrant and complex, and I wouldn't be surprised if I don't ever make a villain who quite gets up to her level again. That being said, story-wise, Lorraine's real significance begins at the exact moment she leaves.

"Goldie, you scandalous thing, you," Myra drawled as she hugged the smaller woman. "Trousers?"

"I like them," Goldie grinned at her. "And the suspenders play merry hell with my personal customers, too." Oh, Myra could see that; the thin belts stretched across Goldie's ample bosom, garnering attention without a doubt.

"La. I take it you've a very busy social schedule, then?"

"Never too busy for you, Duchess," Goldie assured her. "And what's this I hear of your being considered as the heir to Tyrconnell? Will I be calling you princess next time I see you?"

"Not if I can help it," Myra replied with a sigh. "Uncle Colm is finally discussing annulling his marriage to Deidre."

"It only took him three hundred years, but good," Goldie said, pulling out her cigar case and choosing a slim cheroot. "Light?" In a blink, a flame appeared stationary in front of her, and she leaned in to light it. "Thanks."

"My pleasure, just blow the smoke away from me," Myra said, dismissing the flame and gathering her skirts to sit down on the lounge and looking out over the rail. "You do have such wonderful perks to your position, Goldie."

"Yeah, well," the dwarven woman sat down in a chair beside her, taking in the same view. "I earned them, Duchess. Fair and square."

"You did. And I deeply respect that about you."

"And so did you," Goldie added. "You don't just hang about the courts, you earned your title, can't buy it, that's for damn sure."

"Very kind," Myra murmured. "Very kind indeed."

"I always am, to my friends." Goldie paused, blew smoke out over the railing. Myra started at the slightest touch to the back of her hand, and looked to see deep green eyes searching her own. "Moira. What are you running from?"

"I haven't the faintest --"

"You don't lie well, Moira Derryth. You never have. That damn near killed you the last time you were on my boat, and it hasn't changed. Now. What's wrong, and how can I help?"

Once again, the room filled with the song like gibberish which made him smile, and the young man sighs and shakes his head. 

River: You're quite the songbird starling. -he chuckled at the look he got from the young man.- But enough out of me, let's go.

He opened a portal for them, noticing how the young one looked around when they entered the magic realm, and how they instinctively took hold of River’s hand. He let him, if he was honest with himself it felt quite nice which surprised him. Deciding not to make any more out of it, he led him to where he knew Morgyn was.

Morgyn: Well, that is something.

He lifted an eyebrow at River holding the hand of the young dragon, which just made him shake his head. Lucas released River’s hand when Morgyn spoke, lowering their head slightly.

Morgyn: Oh no, not you, young one. River here told me you can’t speak properly, may I hear?
