How to Build a Small Solar Power System - Low-tech Magazine
Readers have told me they like to build small-scale photovoltaic installations like those that power Low-tech Magazine’s website and office. However, they don’t know where to start and what components to buy. This guide brings all the information together: what you need, how to wire everything, what your design choices are, where to put solar panels, how to fix them in place (or not), how to split power and install measuring instruments. It deals with solar energy systems that charge batteries and simpler configurations that provide direct solar power. Conventional solar PV installations are installed on a rooftop or in a field. They convert the low voltage direct current (DC) power produced by solar panels into high voltage alternate (AC) power for use by main appliances and rely on the power grid during the night and in bad weather. None of this holds for the small-scale systems we build in this manual. They are completely independent of the power grid, run entirely on low voltage power, and are not powering a whole household or city but rather a room, a collection of devices, or a specific device. Small-scale solar is decentralized power production taken to its extremes. Most of the work in building a small-scale solar system is deciding the size of the components and the building of the supporting structure for the solar panel. Wiring is pretty straightforward unless you want a sophisticated control panel. You only need a limited set of tools: a wire stripper, some screwdrivers (including small ones), and a wood saw are the only essentials. A soldering iron, pliers, and a multimeter are handy, but you can do without them.

We pulled off the two-lane highway and onto a short farm road, and then got out at an access gate along a wire fence that enclosed an eleven-acre field of solar panels. The reason we were there is that three years ago, when Encore Renewable Energy—a Burlington-based developer of solar arrays—set up the panels, it contracted with a nonprofit that the Kiernans started, called Bee the Change, to seed pollinator-attracting plants that are native to the area in the rows between them. The organization’s small crew tends more than twenty fields like this across the state, weeding and, at least once a year, mowing what they have planted so that it doesn’t grow so high it shades the panels. Most of the attention to “agrivoltaics”—use of one piece of land for both farming and for producing solar energy—has gone to more common agricultural practices, such as letting sheep graze between the panels. But at least fifteen states, including big players like Illinois, maintain solar-pollinator scorecards, which are used as accountability measures in the solar-development community. The theory is that we face two crises—climate change and the rapid loss of biodiversity—and that the same patch of land might be used to address them both.
The approach seems to be working. When the Kiernans are hired by a solar developer, it’s usually to plant on what was until recently a farm field; “the farmer has decided to take a dozen acres” and lease them to solar companies “to get a guaranteed income,” Mike said. Because the fields are typically monoculture and have been treated with pesticides for years, “the pollinator density is really low.” Mike uses a pollinator-counting method that involves walking on the margin of a field and counting unique pollinators for seven and a half minutes. Then a random-number generator tells him which row of solar panels to walk along, and as he walks he counts the pollinators he sees in seven and a half minutes, then adds the two numbers together. “On those abandoned farm fields, we might get a count of forty or fifty in fifteen minutes,” Mike said. “But now, once we’ve done our thing, you can see ten at a glance. You can see three hundred in fifteen minutes. You see a lot of them even this late in summer, during what we call a ‘dearth period.’ Wait till next month, when the asters come in!”
As the nonprofit’s name implies, their first tools were honeybees; they installed hives in solar fields. But, the more they learned about biodiversity, the more they wondered whether this strategy was actually the best for the environment. Honeybees are domesticated and are so persistent and numerous—more than thirty thousand can live in one hive—that, in Mike’s words, they “can put too much harvesting pressure” on the plants. There may not be enough nectar left behind for all the wild pollinators, a complication that spells peril not just for them but for the plants they’re particularly adapted to. “There are more than three hundred and fifty native bee species in Vermont,” Tawnya said. So they stopped placing hives and started installing native plants that attract wild bees.
“In New England, you’re often looking at five-megawatt projects, which means maybe twenty-five acres,” Farrell told me when we spoke by phone earlier this month. “We’re at four or five per cent of our electricity coming from solar now in this country. In order to hit the President’s target of forty-five per cent of our electricity by 2050, we have to grow. And that means we have to deliver the most visually appealing, environmentally responsible projects possible.” In 2020, his company pledged to build all their projects with some form of agrivoltaics. In many cases, that’s sheep grazing. “Not goats,” he said. “Goats will try to eat the wires between the panels, and also to jump up on the panels, which is not good for either one.” Sheep, though, appreciate the shade that the panels provide and are “some of the best asset managers we have in the business, mowing the grass for us. They do their job exceptionally well, and all they want is forage and water, which we can give them.”
Pollinators are even easier animals, though—once the plants have established themselves, they don’t need more than an occasional mow. “We think solar is a good neighbor,” Farrell said. “It’s clean, it’s quiet, and if it increases pollinators it’s helping the whole community.” And so—at a moment when new fossil-fuel-funded schemes are reportedly spreading disinformation about renewable-energy programs—“it can help reduce the friction. It can lower the hurdles to get over, which of course translates into dollars and cents.”

Thank you for answering my ask about Mansk and how spider learns that information. i’ve been wanting to ask that question for months. How are you gonna change that in cabin?
Also, another question that I have is how does Quaritch fund himself in cabin like I know that he saved up all of his money while in the military and has the money that he got after Paz was killed but like has he honestly been going 13 years without a job? How was he able to build the cabin and support himself without a job since he was just following spider around the entire time? Because like he has an entire grocery store in his basement and he still gives money to the recalls when they bring gifts for spider.
We’ll have to see. It won’t be anything major. I’ll have to go back to re read and then I’ll just shift and add to the dialogue between Z, Spider and Quaritch a little. I probably won’t get to it until I’m back to working on Cabin. Currently I’m working on Visited on the Son but then my inbox started blowing up so now I’m taking a little break to answer questions.
Also before I get to your question I saw your other message and thank you for letting me know that you don’t get notifications when I go in to correct my fics. I felt bad sometimes because I would make a correction, re post, find another thing to correct and then have to repost it again. Only to find another thing to correct. I’d be like damn I really hope anyone who’s bookmarked this fic doesn’t get notifications when I do this because I am blowing up their inbox right now.
So for the cost breakdown. I made a huge list of everything the cabin would need with the average price of everything. First though is how much money Quaritch would have. I looked up a while ago what on average someone in Quaritch’s position would make. The answer is $200,000 a year. I aged him down a little from his canon age from fifties to forties. So let’s say he rose up the ranks quickly and earned his position by his early thirties. In ten years he’d have about 2 million saved up. In fifteen years it’d be 3 million. And then he got half a million from Paz’s death.
I won’t write out the entire list I made of price breakdowns for the cabin because that would be a lot. But I looked up average costs of things like solar panels, a new electrical system, a water collection system, new plumbing, appliances, and so on. He wouldn’t have to spend money on wood since he’s using the trees he cut down to build the cabin on, so the siding of the cabin and all the furniture he built himself is free. Also he’d save on money since he’s installing all these things himself. The prices I based my numbers off of include the cost of labor.
I think he’d spend good money on quality mattress so two of those would be around $2,000. I got average prices for things like a couch, rugs, curtains, living room chairs, but honestly I think he’d thrift all this stuff. I’ve gotten really high quality furniture from estate sales or people moving for either cheap or completely free. I set a budget for a new wardrobe for Spider at $1,000. Another $1000 for his books, school supplies, and art supplies.
And then theirs everything in the basement. I went to a bulk stores website and looked up things like canned goods, water, and toiletries. 2,000 cans of various fruits and vegetables would be a little over $2,000. 500 bottles of water would only be about $50. And then all the toiletries added together is $364.
The chickens, their coop and necessities is about $4,125. For the garden if he had 20 different varieties of fruit and vegetable seeds, with each packet being on average $5 that’s $100 for all of them. Times that by ten of each packet and that’s another $1000. Now if he got starter plants for all the fruit trees and bushes that adds up to about $1,500
The grand total for everything was $44,040. I just went ahead and rounded up to $50,000 to compensate for whatever I missed. I figured Quaritch would already own a lot of the tools he’d need for all of this but things break or he might need a special tool for something. And then one of the recoms would need to helicopter a lot of supplies to him and Quaritch would want to pay them for that. Even if I doubled the $50,000 to $100,000 that hardly makes a dent in his wealth.
As for how he lived for thirteen years, he’s probably only spending about $40,000 or less a year on cheap motels to stay in since he’s constantly moving around to follow Spider, food, gas for his car, and any other expenses that comes up like maintenance on said car, or the latest long range camera to take pictures of Spider. $40,000 ever year for thirteen years is $520,000
The grand total of all of this is $570,000. That’s the total settlement from Paz’s death, plus a little over a third of one year of his salary from when he did work. So yeah he’s definitely good on money.

Astronaut set to patch NASA's X-ray telescope aboard space station
NASA astronaut Nick Hague will install patches to the agency's NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) X-ray telescope on the International Space Station as part of a spacewalk scheduled for Jan. 16. NICER will be the first NASA observatory repaired on-orbit since the last servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009.
Hague and other astronauts, including Don Pettit, who is also currently on the space station, rehearsed the NICER patch procedures in the NBL (Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory), a 6.2-million-gallon indoor pool at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, in 2024.
"We use the NBL to mimic, as much as possible, the conditions astronauts will experience while preforming a task during a spacewalk," said Lucas Widner, a flight controller at KBR and NASA Johnson who ran the NICER NBL sessions. "Most projects outside the station focus on maintenance and upgrades to components like solar panels. It's been exciting for all of us to be part of getting a science mission back to normal operations."
From its perch near the space station's starboard solar array, NICER studies the X-ray sky, including erupting galaxies, black holes, superdense stellar remnants called neutron stars, and even comets in our solar system.
But in May 2023, NICER developed a "light leak." Sunlight began entering the telescope through several small, damaged areas in the telescope's thin thermal shields. During the station's daytime, the light reaches the X-ray detectors, saturating sensors and interfering with NICER's measurements of cosmic objects. The mission team altered their daytime observing strategy to mitigate the effect.
The team also developed a plan to cover the largest areas of damage using wedge-shaped patches. Hague will slide the patches into the telescope's sunshades and lock them into place.
"We designed the patches so they could be installed either robotically or by an astronaut," said Steve Kenyon, NICER's mechanical engineering lead at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "They're installed using a tool called a T-handle that the astronauts are already familiar with."
The NBL contains life-size mockups of sections of the space station. Under the supervision of a swarm of scuba divers, a pair of astronauts rehearse exiting and returning through an airlock, traversing the outside of the station, and completing tasks.
For the NICER repair, the NBL team created a full-scale model of NICER and its surroundings near the starboard solar array. Hague, Pettit, and other astronauts practiced taking the patches out of their caddy, inserting them into the sunshades, locking them into place, and verifying they were secure.
The task took just under an hour each time, which included the time astronauts needed to travel to NICER, set up their tools, survey the telescope for previously undetected damage, complete the repair, and clean up their tools.
Practice runs also provided opportunities for the astronauts to troubleshoot how to position themselves so they could reach NICER without touching it too often and for flight controllers to identify safety concerns around the repair.
Being fully submerged in a pool is not the same as being in space, of course, so some issues that arose were "pool-isms." For example, astronauts sometimes drifted upward while preparing to install the patches in a way unlikely to happen in space.
Members of the NICER team, including Kenyon and the mission's principal investigator, Keith Gendreau at NASA Goddard, supported the NBL practice runs. They helped answer questions about the physical aspects of the telescope, as well as science questions from the astronauts and flight controllers. NICER is the leading source of science results on the space station.
"It was awesome to watch the training sessions and be able to debrief with the astronauts afterward," Gendreau said. "There isn't usually a lot of crossover between astrophysics science missions and human spaceflight. NICER will be the first X-ray telescope serviced by astronauts. It's been an exciting experience, and we're all looking forward to the spacewalk where it will all come together."

Frank then removed Volts forgead plate and pulled out his "brain", this was a pretty tipical thing to do, but Volt was nerwous.

As Volt said Frank did, Volt now couldnt see, hear or feel anything, he was completly surounded by darkness. Frank took some time wail reparing Volt, his systems where old and really out dated, he took 4 hours repeplacing, updating and modifing Volt. When frank was finished he removed the block chip and waited untill Volt woke up
Volt waited untill all his limbs where usable then he woke up, he looked around and saw Frank working at his desk, he then barked in a much better voice, he was suprised by this. Then Frank looked back at him and let him off his harness.
-soo, how do you feel?- Frank asked
-it feels odd, i can see everything better and my voice is better, im better-
-yeah bud, ive replaced your voice box with a new one, updated your system, and ive also removed your upper mouth plate where your lens was-
-wheres the plate now-
-dont worry, ive put it in on the top of the shelf, you know its risky-
-right, what else have you done to me?-
-alright, go to that mirror over there- he points at a mirror
Volt walks over to the mirror and looks at him self, he notised that at the bolts that hold his jaw there where a sturdey pieace of wire sticking out.
-did you broke me??-
-no no, just open your mouth and youll see-
Volt slowly opened his jaw and the wire was starting to split into many more and then a holo projection with a faint yellow color appered.

Then Volt left, he was suprised and kinda happy that people dont judge him nor mike, he then went up stairs, quietly to not disturb the other, he walked up to the door and he could her Micheal and Vanessa talk.
He chose to not disturb them, he returned down stairs and layed on the couth he then entered his sleeping mode and sleep the night away, happy that he didnt need to hide his orgins
