USB charging ports for commuters
Wi-Fi routers or emergency call buttons
By relying on renewable energy instead of grid electricity, solar-powered bus stops reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease the overall carbon footprint of public transit systems.
Energy Independence & Grid-Free Operation
One of the biggest advantages of solar bus stops is their independence from the electrical grid. This makes them ideal for:
Remote or underserved areas without reliable power
Temporary installations during road work or events
Quick deployment in developing regions or expanding suburbs
The self-contained nature of solar bus shelters allows municipalities to expand infrastructure faster and more affordably.
3. Cost Savings and Long-Term ROI
Though the initial investment in solar-equipped shelters may be higher, they offer significant long-term savings:
No utility bills for electricity
Lower installation costs (no trenching or wiring to the grid)
Reduced maintenance thanks to durable, weatherproof materials and long-lasting LED lights and batteries
Over time, these savings can offset the upfront costs and free up budgets for other improvements.
4. Safety and Security Benefits
Well-lit bus stops enhance public safety by:
Increasing visibility for passengers and drivers
Deterring vandalism and criminal activity
Providing a sense of comfort and security for nighttime commuters
Solar lighting ensures bus stops remain illuminated even during power outages, making them more reliable during emergencies.
5. Modern Amenities for a Better Commuter Experience
With the added energy from solar panels, cities can offer enhanced services at bus stops:
Digital route updates that help riders plan their journey
USB charging stations for phones and devices
Interactive touchscreens or advertising displays
Air quality sensors or weather updates
These smart upgrades make public transit more appealing and convenient, encouraging greater ridership.
6. Eco-Friendly Urban Branding
Installing solar panels on bus stops sends a strong environmental message. It demonstrates a city’s commitment to:
Reducing energy consumption
Promoting renewable energy
Building smarter, more resilient infrastructure
This can boost a city's image, attract eco-conscious tourists and residents, and help achieve sustainability goals or LEED certifications.

Solar Panels to Power Security Cameras - A Comprehensive Guide

With advancements in renewable energy and wireless technology, solar-powered security cameras have become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners and businesses. These cameras offer an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to monitor properties without relying on traditional power sources or extensive wiring. In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of using solar panels to power security cameras, how they work, and tips for choosing and installing the best solar-powered security camera system for your needs.
Why Choose Solar-Powered Security Cameras?
Solar-powered security cameras combine the benefits of surveillance with the sustainability and independence of solar energy. Here are some reasons why solar-powered systems stand out:
1. Off-Grid Operation: Solar-powered cameras do not rely on the electrical grid, making them perfect for remote areas or locations without nearby power sources. You can install them in rural properties, construction sites, or distant parts of your yard or business premises.
2. Eco-Friendly Surveillance: Solar power is a clean and renewable energy source. By choosing solar-powered security cameras, you reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a greener planet.
3. Cost Savings: Once installed, solar-powered cameras run on free solar energy. You avoid ongoing electricity costs and potentially expensive electrical work, such as digging trenches for wiring or connecting to the grid.
4. Easy Installation: Solar-powered cameras are wireless, which means there is no need for extensive electrical wiring. This makes them easier to install, move, and maintain compared to traditional wired security systems.
5. Continuous Monitoring During Power Outages: Since solar-powered cameras operate independently of the electrical grid, they continue functioning during power outages. This provides reliable security, especially in areas prone to blackouts or natural disasters.
6. Scalability: Solar-powered camera systems are modular and can be expanded as needed. You can add more cameras or solar panels without extensive infrastructure adjustments.
How Do Solar-Powered Security Cameras Work?
Solar-powered security cameras operate by converting sunlight into electricity, which is then used to power the camera and charge a battery for nighttime use or overcast days. Here’s a breakdown of the main components and how they work together:
1. Solar Panels: These are mounted on or near the camera to capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. Solar panels are sized according to the energy needs of the camera, with higher-wattage panels being necessary for more power-hungry cameras or cloudier regions.
2. Rechargeable Battery: The electricity generated by the solar panels is stored in a rechargeable battery. This battery ensures the camera operates during the night or on days when sunlight is insufficient.
3. Security Camera: Solar-powered security cameras are equipped with features like motion detection, night vision, two-way audio, and remote access. They often connect to your smartphone or home network via Wi-Fi or cellular networks, allowing you to monitor your property from anywhere.
4. Charge Controller: A charge controller manages the energy flow from the solar panel to the battery, ensuring the battery is not overcharged or depleted too quickly. This helps prolong the battery’s lifespan and maintain system efficiency.
Types of Solar-Powered Security Cameras
There are different types of solar-powered security cameras available, each designed for specific needs. Here are the main types:
1. Wi-Fi Solar Security Cameras: These cameras use your home or office’s Wi-Fi network to send video feeds to a connected device, such as a smartphone or tablet. They are ideal for areas with good Wi-Fi coverage and can be monitored remotely.
2. Cellular Solar Security Cameras: Cellular solar cameras are perfect for remote locations without Wi-Fi access. They use 4G or 5G cellular networks to transmit video footage and alerts to your smartphone. These are commonly used in rural or off-grid areas.
3. Fixed Solar Cameras: These cameras have a fixed lens and are designed to monitor a specific area. They are simple to install and are suitable for smaller properties or locations where continuous surveillance of one spot is required.
4. Outdoor Solar Cameras with Floodlights: These cameras come with integrated floodlights for enhanced night-time surveillance. The floodlights are powered by solar energy and are often motion-activated to deter intruders.
Key Considerations When Choosing Solar-Powered Security Cameras
When selecting the best solar-powered security camera system for your property, there are several factors to keep in mind:
1. Power Requirements: Different cameras have varying power requirements. Check the wattage of the camera and make sure the solar panel is capable of providing sufficient energy, especially in low-sunlight conditions. For high-energy cameras, opt for larger solar panels or multiple panels to ensure continuous operation.
2. Battery Capacity: The camera’s battery should be large enough to store sufficient energy for nighttime use or cloudy days. Look for systems with high-capacity batteries to ensure uninterrupted surveillance during periods without sunlight.
3. Weather Resistance: Since solar cameras are typically installed outdoors, they need to withstand various weather conditions. Look for cameras with an IP65 or higher weatherproof rating to ensure durability against rain, wind, and extreme temperatures.
4. Camera Features: Consider the camera’s features, such as night vision, motion detection, two-way audio, and resolution. A higher resolution (1080p or 4K) will provide clearer images, while night vision and motion detection ensure reliable security 24/7.
5. Storage Options: Some solar-powered security cameras offer cloud storage for video footage, while others come with an SD card slot for local storage. Cloud storage offers remote access to footage, but local storage is more private and does not require a monthly fee.
6. Connectivity: Depending on the location, choose between Wi-Fi or cellular cameras. Wi-Fi cameras are ideal for homes and businesses with existing networks, while cellular cameras are suitable for off-grid locations where Wi-Fi is unavailable.
7. Camera Placement: To maximize efficiency, position the camera and solar panel in a spot that receives direct sunlight for most of the day. Avoid placing them in shaded areas, and ensure that the camera’s view covers the necessary parts of your property.
Solar-powered security cameras are an innovative and practical solution for modern surveillance needs. By harnessing the power of the sun, these cameras offer cost-effective, reliable, and eco-friendly security for homes, businesses, and remote locations. With easy installation, scalable options, and uninterrupted operation, solar-powered cameras help you keep your property safe while reducing energy costs and environmental impact.
Whether you’re securing a rural property, monitoring construction sites, or adding extra security to your home, solar-powered cameras provide a smart, sustainable alternative to traditional security systems. Explore the options available and choose the best solar camera system to meet your specific needs!

The Van Has Officially Declared It Spooky Season
---
I've got my parent's van for the week and it seems determined to establish my status as The Local Cryptid by terrorizing an innocent 7-11 clerk.
...I might need to back up a bit.
My mother is an eminently sensible woman who knows herself well, and when The Plauge hit, she knew she'd need some sort of mentally and physically engaging craft project to keep herself from going insane and massacring the local zoning and water management boards (even if they have it coming). So she and Dad acquired a utility van and converted it into a camper van because while they love camping, they're past the age where their joints and immune systems will tolerate sleeping on the cold ground in a nylon tent.
They did a terrific job of it and my mom taught herself woodworking and carpentry and now the van has it's own cabinets, fold-away dining table, and removable queen-sized bed with memory foam mattress. My Dad was already a computer engineer, but he learned the dark magics of automotive software and electronics to install after-market backup cameras, a media player that would take a terabyte hard drive and a solar-powered battery and outlet so they could wake up and just turn on the kettle and griddle for breakfast without having to exit the van into a cold morning on an empty stomach.
Truly, the height of Camping Luxury.
My parents are both in their mid-seventies and my primary life goal is to be at least half as cool and hale as they are when I get old.
Anyway, they take it out at least a dozen times a year and it works fabulously, but, being as I am on good terms with my parents and also finishing the process of moving house, I've been borrowing it to move large and cumbersome objects that will not fit in the back of my equally lovely but minuscule Honda hatchback.
It's a Great Van. Very easy and comfortable to drive. Stunningly good MPG for it's size. The best cruise control I've ever had in a car.
It's just also. Quirky. Mischievous, even.
---
If this van has a fault its that it bears the unfortunate affliction that all lightly used white utility vans have in that the combination of an utter lack of branding features and the large dent/scrape I accidentally put on it while trying to escape a Denny's last Thanksgiving means that this vehicle is one addition of a Badly Spray-Painted "FREE CANDY" on the side away from being the sort of vehicle you see in an edgy horror movie.
It's got the same issue that Doberman Dogs have where they look like the sort of creature that likes to snack on toddler's faces whilst actually having personalities made of marshmallow fluff. This vehicle is unnecessarily menacing and I think nothing short of an airbrushed Epic Van Wizard will correct this. People see this van pull up and lean over and squint suspiciously at me when the driver's side door opens, and then look moderately confused when, instead of Charles Manson, a small, potato-shaped creature with neon purple hair and a statistically unlikely assortment of dogs emerges.
My own two dogs, Herschel the Hanukkah Goblin/Corgi and Charleston Chew The Taco Dumpster Dog, Do Not Like The Van. Even with the bed in it, they have a tendency to slide and roll around in the back, and both WILL chew through dog saftey belts or other attempts to secure them in there.
On the other hand, my house mate's dog, an exceptionally tall standard poodle whom we lovingly call "The Creature", loves the Van because SHE wears her doggy seat-belt with only mild complaining and gets to sit up in the passenger seat like A People.
Also like A People, The Creature likes to stand and walk around on her hind legs. It doesn't hurt her and it's entirely voluntary, but every so often I will feel a hand on my arm and instead of my husband or friend, it's a canine that's taller than I am on her hind legs who wants to stare at my face with soulful, concerned eyes. The Creature's favorite thing is that she is exactly the right height for me to hold her arm in Genteel Fashion and walk around the pet food or hardware store with her like I'm a count escorting a debutante around a royal ball.
---
As it stands, I am set to inherit this vehicle whenever my Honda gives up the ghost, and I fully intend to paint an Epic Van Wizard on it when that time comes.
The other peculiarity of The Van is that while Dad did manage to successfully install all his after-market electronics, not all the electronics get along. Sometimes, they fight for Dominance. The Terabyte Music Player and the Backup Camera have a particularly contentious relationship, and turning on the music has about a 25% chance of turning on the backup camera as well, and turning on the Backup Camera is equally likely to turn on the music.
Firthermore, The Van has a favorite song.
I am not kidding that Dad filled an entire terabyte hard drive with music and the software to sort it via the radio controls, but of all the Early Boomer Dad Rock (Kingston Trio over The Eagles) and Irish Folk and Symphonies and the entire discography of Weird Al Yankovic, The Van's favorite song- The one it picks to play as victory music every time it beats the Backup Camera at their weird electronic game of rock-paper-scissors -is The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa.
You all know this song already.
...but in case you've forgotten the tune:
youtube
Yeah.
The Van's favorite song is the goddamn Monty Python's Flying Circus Theme Music.
It does not play this song at a normal volume.
Every time I turn on the Backup Camera and it manages to turn the music player on as well, The Van insists on absolutely blasting this nonsense on at the maximum volume it's physically capable of producing, which I know is loud enough to be heard from the Denver International Airport's Pickup zone when they Van decided to start playing it from the economy lot about half a mile away.
Perhaps it's The Van's way of honoring the aesthetic sensibilities and sonic enthusiasm of Mr. Sousa.
...I can't help but wonder if the purpose of an Epic Van Wizard is to control this sort of faerie-like malarkey, and channel these chaotic energies into things like Spell of Don't Break Down In Nevada or Enchantment Of Always Have Good Parking.
---
So last Friday the 13th, I get a call from my friend and housemate, at said airport.
It's roughly 11PM at night, and I have already retired for the evening. I am in the exact minimum of clothing required to be a decent housemate and not scandalize the neighbors should I happen to walk by a window. My feet are up. There is a cat in my lap and fictional British people murdering each other in highly inventive fashion on the tv. -But my friend has returned from her friend's wedding, and either American or United Airlines has managed to lose her luggage, including, among other valuable possessions, the keys to her car. ...So she cannot just drive home as originally planned.
There are, as luck would have it, her spare set of keys not eight feet from me.
Being a good and decent person, I agree to bring the spare keys to her so she may get home before daybreak and not spend a semester's worth of tuition on an uber across the greater Denver traffic jam.
Being also that she Loves Activities, and it's her mom we're going to pick up, I elect to take along The Creature.
I am primarily focused on remembering how to get to the airport and not leaving my friend's spare keys on the counter, so I throw on a pair of flip-flops, step outside, remember that it's AUTUMN and my minimal evening attire is not sufficient thermal protection, step back in, grab the first coat in the closet I lay hands on, pull it on, check that I have her keys again and leave.
The trip to the airport is largely unremarkable, save that it becomes necessary for me to put on sunglasses to drive, despite it being nearly the witching hour and almost entirely darker than the inside of a cow.
It's necessary because this blissful darkness of night is violently punctured by a startling number of cars that seem to have installed miniaturized but no less powerful lighthouse bulbs in where their headlights ought to go so the oncoming traffic and sports cars that insist on tailgating me in the slow lane alike illuminate the road and my mirrors with the kind of radiance I'd normally associate with the arrival of a Seraphim.
I arrive at the distant highly discounted airport car lot where my housemate is waiting, deeply apologetic. It's nothing. I say. Once I see that your car starts up, I'm gonna go to that 7-11 across the way that I parked in front of, get a slurpee or something and I'll see you at home.
While she is retrieving her vehicle (an equally eccentric but much more stately Subaru that is old enough to be elected to congress) I rifle through the loose change in the glove box and discover that I have exactly $6.66 in small bills and coins. The Subaru, continuing it's long voyage into vehicular immortality, immediately starts up.
Upon her return, we all remember that my friend had all her camping gear in the backseat of the car and there is no room for The Creature to ride home with her parent, so I again assure her it's nothing, and will just take The Creature into the 7-11 with me. She is trained as a service animal and needs the practice after the plague.
I wave my friend off and turn to enter the 7-11.
I promptly trip over the jutting back bumper of The Van and fall, cartoonishly, face-first onto the sidewalk.
Fortunately, I have a lot of practice falling on my face, and have learned not to throw my hands out but instead cover my face, so my unexpected self-inflicted attempted curb-stomping lightly scrapes my hairline and nothing else -my sunglasses even stay in place- and I get up and resume my quest for a slurpee.
It's well known that the airport is a lawless place, and the 7-11 across from the discounted airport parking at the stroke of midnight is no exception.
I know it's the stroke of Midnight because there's one of those Audubon society bird-call clocks that makes bird noises, and my arrival is heralded by the twittering call of a Summer Tanager. I am almost charmed enough by the unusual choice of chronological device to excuse the exorbitant Airport-adjacent mark-up of Slurpee prices. I stand at the machine for some time, trying to decide on a size for the price and guess what the fuck "Blue Lighting Blast" is supposed to taste like.
The Creature is being Very Polite but is somewhat agitated, I assume because she *just* saw her mother for the first time in three days and then she LEFT with no explanation, so The Creature is on her hind legs, staring woefully into my eyes, asking to be escorted around the 7-11. Even though that's not what she's not supposed to be doing, there's nobody else in here, so I let her hang off my arm and discuss various Slurpee Flavor options with her.
We eventually decide on an experiment in which I try a Small Blue Lightning Blast, and discover it tastes a bit like licking a nintendo cartridge but in a pleasantly satisfying way.
I go up to pay and realize something is amiss.
The Cashier is a young man staring at me with wide eyes, one had over the register and the other wrapped up in his rosary.
I look down at myself.
In my haste to reunite my friend with her spare keys and service animal, I had left the house in the following accoutrements:
Flip Flops. Not matching. It's below freezing outside. That last part is not particularly odd footwear for the weather in for Colorado, but it's an important detail for the rest of the ensemble.
Assorted scrapes, bruises, cuts and welts on my arms and legs that come with doing outdoor work and living in a house with three dogs and a fully-clawed cat that all want to be in my lap all the time. It's cold out, so vasoconstriction has pulled the blood away from my skin, a trait that served my ancestors well during the last Ice Age, but leaves me with pale skin to contrast the various wounds and I look like a corpse that fell out of the back of a pickup truck.
The black Bootyshorts with "CRYPTID" painted in bright red gothic font across my ass, that @theshitpostcalligrapher gave me for my wedding present.
A peculiar but extremely comfortable garment that straddles the line between "Lacy Camisole" and "Industrial-Strength Sports Bra" like the Ever Given straddling the Suez Canal. It is also Bright Red. with black accents.
The Jacket I had grabbed out of the closet, which is in fact, a black Velour Dinner Jacket.
The Tokyo-Ghoul inspired reusable anti-covid mask a friend made me with the set of Coyote Teeth.
My sunglasses, which are shaped like a Halloween Bat. The lenses are the wings and the body is the nose bridge. It is ALSO bright red.
A Very Large and remarkably Humanoid Poodle that I have been audibly affectionately calling "Dear Creature" who is hanging off my arm like she's my Prom Date.
The Very Large and remarkably Humanoid Poodle is ALSO dressed up in a black Dog Sweater that has white bones printed on it to look like its an X-ray jacket showing off her skeleton.
I look like I am taking my Very Fancy Werewolf Girlfriend to a particularly casual Dinner Party for Vampires, but the thing that's really selling it and probably alarming the kid the most is the fun accessory I acquired in the parking lot not five minutes earlier:
The "Small Scrape At my Hairline" is actually a painless but PROFUSELY bleeding head wound that I had somehow entirely failed to notice covering my face, neck, decolletage and magnificent cleavage with blood like a Tarantino Film Extra.
This does explain why The Creature has been delicately trying to use her bodyweight to push me down onto the floor for the last ten minutes. So I don't injure myself while we wait for the paramedics she hoped this kid called to arrive, you see.
The Creature has such a High and Naive Opinion of humanity.
I decide this social situation is already fucked, and the only way out is through, and with haste, before I start dripping on the floor.
"Hi there!" I say cheerfully, to indicate this is a visually alarming but not terribly serious situation. "Just a Small Slurpee!"
The Cashier has entered the relevant code into the register before I finish the sentence. His gaze flicks off me just long enough to look at the total, and he grips his Rosary harder.
$6.66
"Oh cool! I have exact change!" I say, taking the money out of my as-yet-unsanguined pocket without looking and slap it down on the counter. "You have a good night and be safe out there!" I wave, leaving.
I get in The Van, mortified, buckle The Creature up, and as I make to leave, I have to put it in reverse, which automatically turns on the backup Camera.
It also turns on the music player.
I make eye contact with the cashier as the dulcet tones of John Phillip Sousa boom from the van hard enough to make the windshield and the windows of the 7-11 rattle for the nine-and-a-half seconds I have to wait to be able to turn the volume back down. Not knowing what else to to, I give him a thumbs up, and leave.
Anyway, now I know what my Future Van Wizard has got to be dressed like, and what their familiar is.

my eternal sunshine: why my last relationship didn’t work out
in my last post, i mentioned how my (now ex) boyfriend cheated on me during my 2024 solar return. not only did my last post inspire me to talk about this, the song intro (end of the world) was also my biggest inspiration. it’s been a year now, and i would like to finally reflect on my relationship with him by dissecting our composite chart.
saturn in the 1st house
with saturn in the 1st house, it felt as if we were both constantly working on our relationship instead of just being in it. we both wanted to act more mature than we were to make things “last”, even when we weren’t ready. we got together when i was 17 and when he was 19 already talking about getting married and starting an entire life together at such a young age with little experience of what a real relationship looks like.
cancer in the 1st house
at times our relationship felt nurturing and safe all the while feeling like we were trying to build emotional security and being scared of vulnerability. the home we wanted to create kept falling apart.
pluto in the 6th house
with this placement, there was a constant push-pull between control and surrender. i remember fighting over alot of things almost everyday even for the little things. just a lot of struggles in our daily routines. it also felt as if though we kept trying to “fix” ourselves.
moon in the 8th house
there was this deep emotional entanglement between us. we both feared emotional abandonment and felt overwhelmed and drained with such emotional intensity between us. some days it felt as if it was too much
chiron in the 8th house
there were wounds around intimacy and trust. i remember he’d always go through my phone but would pull his phone away each time i’d reach for it and fights would break out because of it. we both did not trust each other at ALL. anytime i’d go somewhere, he had me on facetime and turn the camera around to show him that i wasn’t sitting next to any guys. he also didn’t like me going to the gym on my own. neither did he like the way my uniform would make me look so he’d ask if i put on a jacket over it. but he’s not the only one that did these things. i wouldn’t allow him to talk to any girls or look at them or even look for a second job because i was afraid he was going to cheat on me. i also held double standards for myself, allowing myself to talk to my male coworkers or class mates. we were truly a match made in hell
mercury square pluto
there were always intense, obsessive communication patterns; power struggles through words, mind games or digging too deep; trust issues around honesty and hidden thoughts
mercury square ascendant
there was always ALWAYS ALWAYS! miscommunication between us; friction between how one person thinks and how the other person shows up; a lot of misunderstandings.
jupiter square pluto
power clashes around values, beliefs, goals. we had this obsession with growth or “fixing” the relationship. control issues disguised as big picture plans. i remember we both had this saying “i rather start a thousand times over with you than with someone else” because how desperately and committed we were to staying together. especially on his end. i was always the one breaking up with him almost every month for small things and he’d be the one to get us back together.
conclusion
in the end, things worked out the way they were supposed to, a lot of opportunities opened up right in front of me and im glad i got to at least experience that chapter with him and not just anyone. at one point that was my best friend that i grew up with and despite of it all, i still have love for him, but i can only love him from a distance. its better off that way. i hope my eternal sunshine is doing well.

ᴺᴼᵂ ᴾᴸᴬᵞᴵᴺᴳ : To Spend Time ❤ Featuring Purlhew (1.9k words) ◃◃ Previous track! || ⅠⅠ || Next track!▹▹ ↻ Masterlist
Fandom No Straight Roads Pairing Purlhew (blue)/reader Chapter Summary You run into him while he's working

Purlhew always enjoyed when he was able to be out in the Natura district for any reason. Being in a place surrounded by different types of plants and shrubbery meant that there were bugs and the occasional bit of wildlife that found themselves within the city, both of which he enjoyed being able to sit and watch as they did their own thing.
His gaze was focused on the Arhopala Haviland that fluttered on a leaf nearby in the clearing he was standing in, the butterfly a beautiful sight to behold with its wonderful shade of blue wings against the lush greens, holding his hands above his head as he posed for the camera in front of a man made lake.
“Where are you even looking?”
Taking his gaze away from the butterfly to focus on the photographer, he remembered that he was in a solo photo shoot for the day; the others weren’t there for him to hide behind like he normally would be in order to stare at whatever bug had caught his interest. Without the others, his eyes were taken away from the butterfly for long enough that by the time he looked back in the middle of constructing his answer, it was gone.
“I saw a butterfly,” Purlhew said, returning his attention fully to the photographer, “a rather gorgeous one, too. I wish I had brought something to catch it with.” He could see the confusion that laid itself as clear as day across the photographer’s face as he looked between Purlhew and the general direction the butterfly had been.
Of course, Purlhew didn’t expect for the photographer to understand the beauty of nature; he was there in order to take photos for promotion, to make art that was only pleasing to their fans and not to the general public. Unlike a butterfly, whose beauty was unique, Purlhew was forced to pose like the rest of the people like him; idols, stars, celebrities. Stretching his arms over his head, hearing a few more clicks of the camera, a small pop-up appeared in his vision, his LEDs dimming in response.
“Hey, turn them back up,” the photographer clicked his fingers like he was a dog, “we need them to be on.”
Purlhew rolled his eyes behind the sunglasses before removing them, tucking them into the pocket of his jeans. “I need to charge,” he explained, “I do not have an infinite battery like the press like to believe.”
“Isn’t the sun enough?”
Without his glasses, Purlhew had to stop himself from rolling his eyes yet again. The idea of having solar power charging was something that he had mulled over with Zimelu on occasion with their shared frustration of not being able to see the world as much as they’d like, but even Zimelu knew that the concept wasn’t fully there yet. Even Neon J had to frequently charge despite the fact that he was still partially human. Purlhew could only shake his head once more as he walked over to his bag, beginning to rummage around in it.
“Alright, ten-minute break then.”
Purlhew only needed five minutes but he didn’t correct the man, pulling out an energy ‘can’ from his bag, feeling the energy buzz through his fingers before he inserted it into the port on the back of his neck, jumping as it plugged in.
Solar power was a no-go, but energy packs were still possible. It had taken trial and error, but when they had been presented with the new power source they had been ecstatic. Purlhew always made sure to carry at least two with him on the go, and he knew Zimelu had turned his bike into a large one for long rides, but even though he knew they had a more luxurious name, all five of them had begun to call them ‘cans’.
He let go of it once he felt it secure itself into his neck, tucking his fingers into his pockets as he wandered towards the lake’s shore. It wouldn’t drop until he wanted it to, and even then it would have to be empty before he could unplug it, either.
He stared into the water’s depths, watching as some of the smaller fishes swam by the shore before disappearing back into the deeper parts of the lake. He could see his reflection with his cheeks dark and his eyes barely holding a glow, but he was used to the sight, knowing that his body would turn them back on once he was sufficiently charged. “I can see why Neon J doesn’t want us to be on stage on low battery…”
Lifting his gaze to survey the surroundings, a familiar figure off in the distance was enough for his fans to start whirling a bit, looking back at the photographer and his crew before taking a few steps to his right, he set off down the path, cupping a hand around his mouth, despite not even needing to, as he called out her name.
Bee looked up from her phone at her real name being called, the eyes that seemed to draw everyone in meeting his before she smiled, meeting Purlhew in the middle. “Purl,” she greeted, the shortened version of his name rolling off her tongue, “I didn’t expect to see you here today.”
He hadn’t expected to see her either, but the city still only had a few places to go in the long run, it would be eventual that the two would run into each other on one of her days off. It was different to not see her in her uniform, glowing underneath the sun like the brightest firefly in the night, but he just smiled, nodding his head. Though, noting as she looked around for what he could assume would be the others, he chuckled, “It’s only me,” he began, “solo photo shoot for an interview, I wasn’t available the last time they wanted us to do them.”
It had really been more for the fact he had been getting fixed due to an unfortunate accident between himself and a fan, but he chose to not let it slip. He could see that in Bee’s eyes she was staring at his LEDs, though whatever question she had on her tongue died as she shrugged.
The birds whistled and chirped overhead as they talked, finding themselves walking around the grassy area as time passed by. The people in the background talked, the birds sang their song in the trees and, for once, Purlhew wasn’t distracted by any bug or plant that caught his interest. Focusing on Bee and every word that she said, the joy it brought to his circuit board was something that he couldn’t say wasn’t real.
“Can you tell me what this one is?” Bee passed her phone to him as she talked, I saw it earlier and I didn’t know the name.” The phone was warm underneath his fingertips as he analysed the butterfly on the screen, smiling as he realised it had been the same one that he had been looking at before. Despite it not actually being in his hand, he swore he felt the wings flutter against his palm as he talked about the butterfly.
And how she listened, it was like having an entire audience’s eyes on him despite there only being one. She really was the only one he needed, though his voice module glitched as he felt the can detach from his neck.
“Are you ok?”
Purlhew patted down the back of his neck, only finding smooth fake skin and the port which had previously been connected to the can, feeling on the top of the sweater, the bottom part of his sweater, and then eventually turning around, scanning the grass with his eyes before he felt a tap on his back, turning around to see Bee holding the can in her hand.
“Thank you.” When their hands met, he watched as she jumped, feeling something jolt from his fingertips before she jerked her hand away, the can being dropped to bounce on the grass. He couldn’t care about it now, taking Bee’s wrist in his own as he studied her fingertips, gently examining each one. “Did I hurt you?”
“It was just a shock.” Bee’s mouth upturned slightly, a smile forming across her features as her eyes flickered between his and his hand, “Then again, it’s your job to be a shocker.”
He swore he heard a part of his brain reboot as he registered the words, staring at the woman before a snicker escaped from his speakers, a snicker escaping from her mouth in response. “But are you really ok?” It pained him to let her hand slip through his fingers as she nodded, but he didn’t want to make it uncomfortable by holding her soft hand for too long, though the same warm feeling circulated through his circuits as Bee finally began to laugh.
A shout of his name across the clearing, the camera man waving at them with a large hand, Purlhew already knew his time was up way before he could hear the next words calling for him to come back to the photo shoot area. He didn’t want to leave Bee alone, yet, as he looked over to her, he saw the understanding in her eyes that he needed to do his job.
His LEDs flashed with a thought, Bee jumping at the sight before he grabbed her hand again, making sure she had enough room to pull it back if she didn’t want him to hold it. “Do you want to see me work?”
Her gaze shifted between him and the photographer that seemed to grow more annoyed by the passing minute that the robot wasn’t doing exactly as he was being asked to; one of the things he was glad was taken out of their coding upon their upgrade —though it may have been due to a incident involving a fan having learned their key words and made Haym follow her.
“Do you want me to come with you?”
“Only if you’re not busy.” His thumb rubbed over her knuckles before he lifted them up, placing them to his lips as he gave a gentle kiss as he had done to others and her many times before. “I would love for you to get an insight into what we actually do beyond music.” And to spend more time with her in general. Watching as her eyes softened with a smile, she laughed as she took her hand away from his.
“I always have time for you.”
Wrapping an arm around her shoulder as he lead her back to the photo shoot, he couldn’t care the fact he could see people whispering about them over the other side of the clearing, or the phones that were brought out to film them, he kept Bee hidden behind his body as they stood in front of the photographer.
“About time, we have the rest of the set to do.” The photographer’s hands fidgeted with the camera as he directed Purlhew to where he was to stand, letting Bee stand with the crew as he returned to his spot.
“If you send me some of the photos of the shoot after this, I’ll match whatever commission you get for the article.” He watched the photographer’s eyes light up at the idea, the man all too willing to agree to Purlhew’s request as they recommenced the photo shoot.
A week later, when he got the photos back, he found a few in the pile of him and Bee, which he hung up around his charging station.

“So, what’s the sitch, Sheriff?”
“Alarms in the building went off at about three AM. When the cops arrived, they couldn’t find any sign of forced entry until they looked at the top floor, where a window had been broken.”
“Great, so we’ve got a new flyer.” Solar Flare said, annoyed.
“No, a security camera picked up the perp climbing through the window, not flying through.”
Solar Flare was incredulous. “You’re telling me someone climbed to the top of a skyscraper without anyone noticing?”
“That’s exactly what I’m telling you.” The Dark Sheriff replied, expression hidden behind her bandanna and hat. “Without any sort of obvious climbing gear, might I add.”
Solar Flare sighed and rubbed her eyes with one hand. A new villain with unknown powers that lets them climb sheer surfaces without aid. Fucking wonderful.
“Maybe it’s one of Roboto’s new designs.” She put forth hopefully. The Sheriff shook her head.
“It was definitely a human, or a metahuman. Unless Roboto has changed her style completely in favor of subterfuge, of course.” Both heroes knew that was unlikely.
“So what was taken, then?”
“Not much, actually. The thief found the CEO’s checks, pre-signed of course, and took them. His account has been frozen, but not before about one-hundred thousand dollars was withdrawn from it, from multiple ATMs across the city.
“There’s also evidence that some critical business data was stolen. That makes me think that whoever this is, they were hired by a competitor in the video game industry.”
“Or someone pissed about their practices.” Solar Flare added, looking at the large ‘UBISOFT’ sign above the front entrance.

On the way back to the main building, JC showed me the “layered security” protocols he had learned designing embassy properties: a fence, “no trespassing” signs, guard dogs, surveillance cameras … all meant to discourage violent confrontation. He paused for a minute as he stared down the drive. “Honestly, I am less concerned about gangs with guns than the woman at the end of the driveway holding a baby and asking for food.” He paused, and sighed, “I don’t want to be in that moral dilemma.”
That’s why JC’s real passion wasn’t just to build a few isolated, militarised retreat facilities for millionaires, but to prototype locally owned sustainable farms that can be modelled by others and ultimately help restore regional food security in America. The “just-in-time” delivery system preferred by agricultural conglomerates renders most of the nation vulnerable to a crisis as minor as a power outage or transportation shutdown. Meanwhile, the centralisation of the agricultural industry has left most farms utterly dependent on the same long supply chains as urban consumers. “Most egg farmers can’t even raise chickens,” JC explained as he showed me his henhouses. “They buy chicks. I’ve got roosters.”
JC is no hippy environmentalist but his business model is based in the same communitarian spirit I tried to convey to the billionaires: the way to keep the hungry hordes from storming the gates is by getting them food security now. So for $3m, investors not only get a maximum security compound in which to ride out the coming plague, solar storm, or electric grid collapse. They also get a stake in a potentially profitable network of local farm franchises that could reduce the probability of a catastrophic event in the first place. His business would do its best to ensure there are as few hungry children at the gate as possible when the time comes to lock down.
So far, JC Cole has been unable to convince anyone to invest in American Heritage Farms. That doesn’t mean no one is investing in such schemes. It’s just that the ones that attract more attention and cash don’t generally have these cooperative components. They’re more for people who want to go it alone. Most billionaire preppers don’t want to have to learn to get along with a community of farmers or, worse, spend their winnings funding a national food resilience programme. The mindset that requires safe havens is less concerned with preventing moral dilemmas than simply keeping them out of sight.

Do CCTV cameras work without electricity?
The short answer is that CCTV cameras typically do not work without electricity. However, the situation is more complex, and certain models can continue to function during a power outage:
Battery-Powered, Wireless Security Cameras:
These cameras have rechargeable batteries and can operate for a limited time after a power outage. They store footage on onboard storage, but live viewing may be interrupted until the system is back online.
Solar-Powered Security Cameras:
These cameras use solar energy to operate and can continue working without a traditional electrical power source, provided there is enough sunlight.
Backup Generators:
Backup generators can supply electricity to the CCTV system during a power outage, ensuring continued operation.
Other ways to keep your CCTV cameras operating during a power outage include:
Having Backup Power for Your Home or Business: Installing a comprehensive backup power solution such as a whole-house generator can ensure continuous operation of your CCTV system.
Installing Battery Backups on Every Device: Adding battery backups to cameras, DVRs/NVRs, and network equipment can help maintain functionality during short-term power interruptions.
Using a UPS Power Backup for the DVR or NVR: A UPS ensures that your recording devices remain powered and continue recording, even during a power outage.
CCTV cameras generally require electricity to function, but with the right setup—such as battery power, solar energy, or backup generators—they can continue to operate during power outages.
