Musana Carts: Solar-powered business in Uganda opts for open source IP over patenting
Taking its name from a Ugandan word for ‘sunshine’, the Musana cart uses an in-built solar panel to power an eco-friendly stove and a small refrigerator. By removing the need for charcoal burning, the Musana cart produces far less smoke than other food vendor carts, ensuring a cleaner and safer experience for both workers and customers. Other innovations include light bulbs, to allow the vendor to work at night, and phone chargers, so that they can offer mobile money services.
The decision not to patent the Musana cart could have been seen by Nataliey and the team as a setback, but it instead encouraged them to return to their original vision and mission of social innovation: making the livelihoods of Africa’s street food vendors cleaner, safer and more sustainable.

They realized that the more people who had access to their cart designs, the better, and that patenting their invention could restrict access. On this basis, they decided to open source their IP so that vendors across Africa were free to improve their lives through their innovation. When IP is open source, it means that other people and groups can freely use, modify and share it.
After several years of selling to vendors, Musana Carts is already having a positive impact in Kampala. The solar-powered food carts have proved to be cleaner, more hygienic and more sustainable than traditional charcoal-fueled food carts. The Musana cart’s in-built lighting allows vendors to work at night if they choose, giving them an opportunity to earn more. Musana carts can be purchased in installments, making them more accessible to poor workers. The company has also teamed up with Kampala Capital City Authority to ensure that Musana carts are legally recognized, freeing vendors from the risks and uncertainties of working in the informal economy.
Although she sees the value in patent protection in more economically developed countries, where the legal framework is in place to ensure that an individual can be remunerated for the use of their innovation or invention, she knows first-hand that this is much harder to establish in African markets. Consequently, Nataliey encourages female inventors not only to monetize their innovations in their markets, but to share them outside of their capacity as well.
Equally importantly for Nataliey, however, is the philosophy behind open source IP. When there are so many challenges facing the world, she argues, no one individual or organization can satisfy every market need. She feels that there’s room for many to thrive. Furthermore, Nataliey believes that open sourcing can incentivize further innovation by allowing people to build on each other’s inventions. It’s the concept of cooperation, codependence and community at the heart of the African philosophy of ubuntu: ‘I am, because you are.’ Nataliey’s hope is that her company’s use of open source IP will help make this concept a reality for street food vendors across Africa.

I’ve been doing some talking about getting into radicalism and how to organize. You can do that first—you have a feeling that things need to change and you just act. At some point though, I think it’s important to start thinking from a longer-term perspective. That's where visioning comes in.
To know how to change the world, we should know what we want it to look like. Solarpunk is a great example of this—giving us aspirational visuals and vistas for how the world could look if we got our shit together. This is what a vision is in a nutshell.
Once we have have an understanding of what we want the world to look like, we have to figure out how to get there. This is where things start to become interesting. To me, values are like guiding principles that we ground our actions in. To come up with values, think about the ethics and principles that are embedded in your vision. If we think about solarpunk, some values that I see are ecological harmony, intersectional feminism, and economic democracy.
When we have our vision and values in place, we can think about the specific things that we want to accomplish. Our goals should be relatively concrete things that we can build strategies around. What are the material changes that you want to happen? What are the specific, tangible things that you can work towards? If it’s too broad (ex: “I want to abolish the commodity form”), then that might be one of the descriptors of your vision.
So, you create a vision → which informs your values → and dictates your goals.
To develop a vision, put on your dreaming goggles. Imagine what the world can look like. Try to engage your senses. What do you see? What do you hear? What does it smell like?
To develop your values, look at that vision, analyze the implied material and social contexts and use those as guiding lights.
To develop your goals, think about the specific things you can work towards, acting within your values, to create fertile ground for your vision to flourish.
To wrap up, I want to walk through a vision of a better world. If you want some homework, you can derive some values and goals from that.

Streets are bustling with activity, but they are not dominated by cars. Instead, it is a pedestrian-friendly space where people of all ages and abilities move freely and safely. Electric trams silently glide by, their sleek design reflecting the beauty of their surroundings.
Local artisans and worker-owners have set up vibrant market stalls, showcasing their handmade creations and locally sourced goods. Vibrant textiles, handcrafted jewelry, and organic produce catch the eye. Neighbors stop to chat, share stories, and exchange ideas.
In the distance, I see a community forest garden, a lush oasis of greenery where residents gather to cultivate their own food. The garden is a testament to space reclaimed by the people, fostering a sense of ownership and connection to the land.
As I continue my walk, I feel a sense of hope and possibility. This city is a testament to the power of collective action and the transformative potential of dreaming and envisioning a better world.

In the Salt Lake City region, utility executives and lawmakers scaled back plans for big investments in clean energy and doubled down on coal. The retirement of a large coal plant has been pushed back a decade, to 2042, and the closure of another has been delayed to 2036. Among the region’s mega energy users is Meta. It’s building a $1.5 billion data center campus outside Salt Lake City that consumes as much power as can be generated by a large nuclear reactor. Google has purchased 300 acres across the street from Meta’s data center and plans its own data center campus. Other data center developers are frantically searching for power in the area.
A spike in tech-related energy needs in Georgia moved regulators in April to green-light an expansion of fossil fuel use, including purchasing power from Mississippi that will delay closure of a half-century-old coal plant there. In the suburbs of Milwaukee, Microsoft’s announcement in March that it is building a $3.3 billion data center campus followed the local utility pushing back by one year the retirement of coal units, and unveiling plans for a vast expansion of gas power that regional energy executives say is necessary to stabilize the grid amid soaring data center demand and other growth.
In Omaha, where Google and Meta recently set up sprawling data center operations, a coal plant that was supposed to go offline in 2022 will now be operational through at least 2026. The local utility has scrapped plans to install large batteries to store solar power.
These concrete developments in energy markets contrast with tech companies’ futuristic promises. A recent Goldman Sachs analysis of energy that will power the AI boom into 2030 did not even consider small nuclear plants or futuristic fusion generators. It found data centers will account for 8 percent of total electricity use in the United States by 2030, a near tripling of their share today. New solar and wind energy will meet about 40 percent of that new power demand from data centers, the forecast said, while the rest will come from a vast expansion in the burning of natural gas. The new emissions created would be comparable to that of putting 15.7 million additional gas-powered cars on the road.
“We all want to be cleaner,” Brian Bird, president of NorthWestern Energy, a utility serving Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska, told a recent gathering of data center executives in Washington, D.C. “But you guys aren’t going to wait 10 years … My only choice today, other than keeping coal plants open longer than all of us want, is natural gas. And so you’re going see a lot of natural gas build out in this country.”

In celebration of Earth Month, we will be sharing a series of recent interviews that tie directly into the environmental mission of Down to Earth Markets. This week we are pleased to feature a recent chat with Serge Lazarev, founder of Green Tree Textiles, that we conducted during a tour of their Hunt’s Point, NY recycling warehouse last month. 
Down to Earth Markets has partnered with Green Tree Textiles since 2011 to collect textiles for reuse and recycling in green bins at many of our farmers markets. Leaders in the local textile recycling movement, Green Tree picked up and processed a whopping 6.3 million pounds of donated clothes, shoes, bags and linens between 2020-2023! Read on to learn more about this remarkable non-profit and the work they’re doing to divert unwanted, post-consumer textiles from the waste stream. 
How did the incarnation of Green Tree Textiles come about and what was your initial goal for the organization? 
Serge: Around 2008, I was working in operations for a gasoline retailer, an industry that is directly associated with creating lots of pollution. I had been on this career path for fifteen years and the longer I remained on it, the less of a future I saw for myself. At that time, newly elected President Obama was advocating for green jobs and working towards a more sustainable future for our country and the planet. I was inspired by his words and started to research solar panels as well as metal and plastic recycling business opportunities.

I discovered that many of these recycling businesses were costly to start and there was already a steady recycling return rate on some of the waste materials. Then I stumbled upon an interesting statistic from the EPA that said 85% of unwanted textiles were not being picked up by the recycling industry and was ending up in landfills and incinerators. That’s when the light went off in my head! I realized that here I was in a job selling gasoline along a one mile stretch of road with ten other gas stations in sight, while all these materials were just out there being thrown away with no one doing anything about it. So there and then I decided to start GTT with the mission of keeping unwanted textiles out of the waste stream.

April is Earth Month, a time to raise environmental awareness about the issues and challenges facing our planet. Why is textile recycling important for the health of our environment? 
Serge: Clothing manufacturing and its products negatively affect the environment in a major way, beginning at the very outset of production. The fashion industry uses vast amounts of water, non-natural dyes, and chemically engineered materials and is estimated to be responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions – more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. It is the second largest polluting industry in the world after oil and gas.
At the end of their life, most of these textiles are thrown away and end up in landfills or incineration ovens, creating yet more pollution. To solve it this issue must be addressed on many levels, starting with the manufacturing process, consumer shopping habits, and end of life procedure. We need to move towards creating a circular economy that will save both money and the planet. The good news is that industries focused on recycling and reusing textiles are slowly emerging and getting stronger by the year.

Many of Green Tree Textiles’ drop-off locations can be found in local farmers markets? Why do farmers markets make a good spot for your green textile collection bins?
Serge: When recycling is convenient, people are more likely to do it! It’s important to make it as easy as possible, just like the convenience of recycling bottles and cans in receptacles that can be found on every street. Textile recycling should be available in places that you’re going to go to anyway, such as a farmers market. Plus, the demographic of people who shop at farmers markets intersects closely with those who are interested in the environment and making sure that their clothing doesn’t end up in the waste stream.

What kind of textiles do you accept and what should shoppers avoid putting in your collection bins? Should items be bagged or can they be tossed in loosely?
Serge: We accept clothing, shoes, sheets, towels, handbags, and fashion accessories like belts. We do not accept pillows, comforters, blankets, bathroom mats, rugs, plastic toys, books, suitcases, and kitchen gear. We prefer items to be bagged as it protects pieces that are in good condition from getting dirty during the transportation process. If bags are not available, placing loose items in the bins also works.  
What happens to the textiles that are dropped off in your collection bins in Down to Earth Farmers Markets? How are they recycled/reused/repurposed?
Serge: I and two of my associates hand-sort and process an average of 5,000 pounds of textile donations a day! The breakdown of what we receive is about 75% clothing, 15% shoes, 7% linens and 3% other. We methodically separate donations into two main categories: Reuse and Recycle. The items suited for reuse are given to our charity partners or sold to our for-profit partners. The materials for recycling are sent out to become textile insulation that's used in walls and for soundproofing. You can take a peek at that process in this short video.

The issue of unwanted and discarded textiles is a growing problem fueled by the consumption of fast fashion. What do you think the major drivers are behind this growing problem?
Serge: There are more discarded textiles than ever currently because the population is growing so more clothing is needed for everyone. In light of this, I would encourage consumers to purchase clothing made of organic materials such as cotton and wool whenever possible, to purchase pieces that will be in style for more than one season, to buy clothing from a secondhand store, and to always be mindful of which path you let your garments take next.

What is the difference between GTT and the other collection boxes you see in public locations? 
Serge: Green Tree Textiles is committed to making sure that the clothing and other textile donations we receive do not enter the waste stream. If the item is no longer suitable for reuse in its original form, then we make sure there is a recycling option for it. We are also looking to get certified for the carbon credits we generate, which will further differentiate us from similar entities.
