Having the privilege of getting to be in the path of totality yesterday, I will relay my experience.
Sitting in church parking lot, brought there by a devout atheist, we stare up at the sun. The hours spent out racing clouds finally having culminated up to the this. A tiny slice is eaten from the sun. The people around us oooh and ahh in excitement. A rich green field full of crimson clovers stretches down beneath us. Three horse emerge to graze in the afternoon heat. Crows caw in the distance. A bird of prey rides the rising thermals. A dutiful bumblebee bounces from flower to flower.
We chatter and joke amongst ourselves, glancing up at ever present orange crescent through darkened lenses. A child squeals in horror from an ant crawling on her shoe.
“Yeah, They do that.” Her mom informs her in exasperation.
“Yeah they do that.” I mutter in agreement ,watching the gently swaying grass.
“The light seems dimmer.” I insist to my group.
They laugh and disagree.
It does. It’s an though the world was placed in photoshopped and the contrast was being lowered ever so slightly. The air is cooling ever so slightly and the wind is picking up. A single cloud blows over e sun.
“It’s the eclipse!” We jest as it’s shadow races up over the hill. I check the sky. Still clear of clouds.
Cars race by on the highway beside us. No one pulls in. How can they not stop? Do they not know what is about to happen? Do they not care?
I make a pinhole camera. Tiny moons dance on a sheet of paper. I show my mom how to make on with her hand. It’s an eternity before the sun stars to shrink. My brother discusses wind with my dad.
15 min till. I look up and squeal in excitement. I am seeing the edges of the crescent disappear right before my very eyes. The crowd yells in excitement as everyone scrambles to look.
Everyone goes quiet now. It’s chilly now. The sun is bright and high like summer but the wind feels like autumn. Bird still caw and the bee still buzzed. The horses are unbothered. Two more cars roar by. A Motorcycle follows. No one pulls in.
The sun is a finger nail now.
I call for timecheck. Five minutes till. They called me crazy before, but now the light around us is obviously lower. It’s as though you are on darkened stage standing under a bright spotlight. Everyone yells as streetlights come on. A truck with its headlights on blows by. It does not pull in.
I whip my head up the sky. An impossibly tiny dot of orange hangs in the dark lens. The sun is Impossibly tiny but still bright enough for me to quickly jerk my head away as I try to take an unguarded peak. Under my eyelids I see a vision of a pale moon with a blinding white flare cascading over the side.
It’s so close. I’m quivering in terror and excitement.
Then.
The sky flickers. I miss the first diamond ring for fear of ruining my vision. But I don’t miss what’s next.
Pictures do not describe what happens. In every picture, the sun seems too small, too distant, the sky pitch black.
Here. The sun is as big as a full moon in the sky. It’s… it’s a hole. A black endless hole. A black hole. I am looking at Sagittarius A in my solar system.
I am gripping the concrete in terror. I possess a fear of wide open uncovered skies. I feel as though I will fall up in it. Being on a hill under a huge sky was nerve racking when I stepped of the car. Now, staring up at hole, a hole! It’s gone! It’s gone! It’s gone! We’ll be sucked in!
I pant in awe and terror, holding back tears. Everyone is screaming, hollering, and yelling. I am holding my mothers hand. I am torn between fixing my gaze up wards or all around. The sky is a deep purple black. It fades in a sunset shadow orange on the horizon all around us. That’s the sun’s light, I realize. We are under the moons shadow.
I check with the glasses to see if the sun is still there. The lenses are dark.
I stare up again, my brother urging everyone to look at it. It goes so fast, he’d warned us before. The Corona beams out from behind the moon in grey beams. They are straight and angular, like point of a jagged crown. Watch the edges of the moon, my brother says, you will see the refraction from the mountains.
I look. There. On the bottom, a tiny faint blurry spurs of red dances. I see blue next to it. Then deep blue. I’m shaking to record these down.
There is a planet, too bight to be a star, southeast of the moon and another northeast. I don’t which they were.
It feels as though the world will stay like this forever, eclipsed in darkness with only streetlights and light from the horizon to illuminate the world.
Then. The sky flickers. A bright flare pierces, pierces! Over the side of the moon. The diamond ring.
The worlds is thrust back into light. It’s so bright! It was just dark and now it is bright! Like a light switch! There is only a sliver of orange is the glasses but it is bright!
The sun has returned. And just like that. Everything is like before.
The crowd packs up. The streetlights go back out. The saturation of the of world returns. The chilly air begins to warm back up. I discuss return trip plans with my group, trying to hold the fleeting majesty of what I’ve seen in my mind.

Just how dark is the night sky? If you step outside during a moonless night and look up, it probably doesn’t look that dark at all. Streetlights or nearby porch lights fill the air with a background glow, particularly if they happen to be bluish-white LEDs. Light pollution in your neighborhood is likely so bad that you can only see a few bright stars. Even in somewhat rural areas, our skies are so bright that the Milky Way isn’t really visible. In North America and Europe, only about a quarter of children have seen the Milky Way. To get away from all the light pollution you need to travel to a pretty remote corner of the world. One of the most remote is the Andean desert in Chile. If you have a chance to visit one of the major observatories there you can catch a glimpse of the darkest skies in the world. On a moonless night with the Milky Way overhead you can see a vast sea of stars and shadow constellations along the multicolored glow of the galactic center. There the skies are so dark that the Milky Way casts a faint shadow you can see when your eyes are fully dark adapted. But even that is not a truly dark sky. Our atmosphere emits a faint glow even in the darkest night. It’s caused by ultraviolet sunlight and cosmic rays which ionize Earth’s upper atmosphere. This airglow isn’t noticeable when we look directly overhead, but it’s there, and it limits the view of Earth-based telescopes. Even our best observatories have to deal with light pollution. So we launch telescopes into space. Beyond our atmosphere, the Hubble and Webb telescopes surely get a pure view of the sky. Wondrous as their images are, they don’t capture the truly dark sky. Sunglow is still an issue. Our solar system is filled with diffuse dust, and every particle scatters light back toward our world. On Earth, we can see this dust-scattered glow as the zodiacal light. It’s faint to our eyes, but visible even in space. The night of interplanetary space is dark, but still not dark enough. To get a real view of the dark sky, we would need to travel beyond the dust, to the furthest edge of our solar system. Far beyond the orbit of Pluto. Voyagers I and II have traveled that far, as have Pioneers 10 and 11. We’ve long lost contact with the Pioneers, and while we still communicate with the Voyagers, they can’t transmit any useful images to us. But there is a distant spacecraft that can. New Horizons flew past Pluto in 2015, and then past the Kuiper Belt Object Arrokoth. It is now twice as distant from the Sun, and its cameras can still gather data. Recently the New Horizons team tried to capture the fragile darkness of the universe. They aimed New Horizons at a patch of sky far away from the Milky Way, away from the Sun, and away from bright stars. Then they measure how much light the camera captured. When they compared that amount to the amount captured by Hubble’s view of dark sky, they found it was darker by an expected amount, but there is still some faint glow astronomers can’t explain. If you calculate the background light you’d expect from distant galaxies all the way back to the big bang, New Horizons measured about twice as much. So the team plan to observe 15 other dark locations over the next month, hoping to see the naked dark of the cosmos, or to verify this mysterious background glow. And perhaps through the darkest skies, we will see the light. You can learn more about New Horizons on their mission website. What is the Role of a Solar Lighting System?
Solar lighting system Gurgaon is a type of outdoor lighting that uses the sun's energy to power the lights. They are becoming more popular as a way to save energy and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
Solar lighting systems consist of three main components:
● Solar panels: These absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity.
● Batteries: These save the electricity generated by the solar panels.
● Lights: These use the electricity stored in the batteries to illuminate an area.
Solar lighting systems can be used in a variety of applications, including:
● Streetlights: Solar streetlights are a popular way to light up streets and sidewalks in both urban and rural areas. They can help to improve safety and visibility at night, and they can also reduce energy costs.
● Security lights: Solar security lights can be used to deter crime and improve safety around homes, businesses, and other properties. They can also be used to provide light for outdoor activities like camping and hiking.
● Landscape lighting: Solar landscape lights can be used to add beauty and interest to your yard or garden. They can also be used to highlight features such as walkways, trees, and flower beds.
● Pathway lights: Solar pathway lights can be used to light up walkways and driveways. They can help to make your property safer and more inviting at night.
● Floodlights: Solar floodlights can be used to provide bright, concentrated light for a variety of purposes, such as security, sports, and recreation.
Solar lighting systems offer a number of advantages over traditional lighting systems, including:
● They are a renewable energy source, which means they do not generate greenhouse gases or other pollutants.
● They are low-maintenance, as they do not require any wiring or electrical connections.
● They are very reliable, as they can operate even in cloudy weather.
● They are cost-effective, as they can save money on energy costs over time.
If you have been searching for a way to save energy, reduce your reliance on fossil fuels, and improve your home or property, then a solar lighting system may be a good option for you.
Here is some more information about the role of the solar lighting system:
● Safety: Solar lighting systems can help to improve safety at night by providing light for people to see. This is especially important in areas where there is a lot of foot traffic, such as sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways. Solar lighting systems can also help to deter crime by making it more challenging for criminals to operate in the dark.
● Security: Solar lighting systems can be used to improve security by providing light for security cameras and other security devices. This can help to deter crime and make it easier to catch criminals if a crime does occur.
● Aesthetics: Solar lighting systems can be used to enhance the aesthetics of your home by adding beauty and interest. They can be used to highlight features such as walkways, trees, and flower beds. Solar lighting systems can also be used to create a more inviting atmosphere at night.

Geysers & Heaters:
Geysers and heaters are necessary home gadgets that offer warmth throughout the cold months. A heater is a device that produces heat to warm a room or place, whereas a geyser is a sort of water heater that heats and stores water in a tank. Electric, gas, and solar geysers are just a few of the different varieties of geysers that are available. The most popular kind of geyser is an electric geyser, which heats water using electricity. While solar geysers heat water using the sun's energy, gas geysers use gas as their fuel source. On the other hand, there are many different types of heaters, including infrared heaters, electric heaters, gas heaters, and oil heaters.
Space heaters
heaters of water
dipping rods
Fans:
Fans are equipment that moves air and cools the area around them. They come in a variety of styles, including wall-mounted, pedestal, table, and ceiling fans. The most popular kind of fan is a ceiling fan, which is generally put in residences and workplaces to circulate air and produce a cooling effect. Table fans are small, portable fans that may be set up on desks or tables, whereas pedestal fans are free-standing fans that can be moved from one location to another. Fixed fans that are mounted on walls and offer a significant cooling impact are called wall-mounted fans.

Under the Dancing Lights
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Echo (@roofgeese) x Erron Black Warnings: None, really. I mean, Echo's backstory is traumatic inherently. A/N: So, the Northern Lights have been going NUTS up here due to the solar storm, and I thought so myself....could you imagine seeing these for the first time??? And, well, the rest is history.
--
Erron hates the city.
The lights, the screaming traffic, the looming buildings- he hates all of it.
He waits as Echo meets the contact, perched on a rooftop about a block away with his rifle in hand in case the deal goes south. He trains the crosshairs onto the man she's speaking with- he's tall, looming over Echo like an oak tree.
Erron marvels at the way the Shokan has hidden its spare set of arms inside the baggy jacket draped over its frame- Outworld ingenuity at its finest.
Echo hands over a thick envelope and the Shokan gestures to three other figures in the shadows behind it. They step forward and set a metal case on the ground at Echo's feet before retreating back into the warehouse.
Erron chews the inside of his cheek as he watches Echo's blonde head dip down to pick up the case. She glances up briefly and her sage-colored eyes glint like gems under the streetlights. It makes his breath hitch as she stares up and an almost imperceptible smile passes over her lips.
Erron keeps the crosshairs trained on her as she moves through the alleyways and makes her way to the rendezvous. When he loses sight of her, he heads to the ladder and descends to the street below, where he finds her leaning against a brick wall with the metal case at her feet.
"Hey cowboy," his heart sings at the way she uses her real voice to greet him.
"Four arms give you any trouble?" Erron slings his rifle over his shoulder and she shakes her head.
"Sheeva put in a good word for us, they were eager to settle."
"I guess Demir is good for something," Erron chuckles and stoops to pick up the case by its silver handle, "Let's get the hell out of here."
The two of them meet the humvee at the outskirts of the city and Erron loads the cargo into the rear as Echo clambers into one of the seats.
As the moon hits its peak in the dark sky, Echo feels her eyelids grow heavy with the sway of the humvee on the dirt roads. Erron watches her head loll to the side and smiles at the way her hair falls into her face with every lurch of the vehicle.
When they arrive at the compound, Erron shakes her awake gently and they head inside. The rest of the building is quiet, and they meet no one else in the hallway outside the living quarters.
"Your place or mine?" Erron leans against the wall and waits for Echo to answer as she yawns and stretches.
"Yours."
--
Erron wakes to the sound of Echo shuffling about in the small bedroom- he cracks an eye and watches her as she dresses, savoring the way the dim light highlights every curve of her body.
"I know you're watching me," her voice is playful as she pulls her shirt over her head.
"Can you blame me?" Erron rolls out of the bed with a groan and begins to search for his own clothing.
"I've got to get to work on Kano's reports-" Echo plants a kiss on Erron's cheek and heads for the door, "See you later, cowboy."
--
"I need to borrow one of the open bed trucks," Erron plants his hands on Kano's desk and the Aussie cocks an eyebrow.
"What for?"
"None of your goddamn business."
Kano chuckles and leans back in his chair, fingers laced together supporting his head as he stares at Erron.
"Takin' that pretty little thing on a date?"
Erron frowns and Kano laughs outright as he trains his eye on the cowboy.
"I have cameras, mate."
Erron shifts uncomfortably and Kano waves a dismissive hand at the doorway, "Take one, keys are in the lockbox in the garage. Bring it back with a full tank."
--
Echo sets the thick ream of paper on Kano's desk and makes her way back to her bunk. Her bed is calling to her when she pauses at the door. A note is taped to it, written unmistakably in Erron's scrawling handwriting.
"Meet me in the East Garage -EB"
Echo slips the note into her pocket and makes her way to the Eastern block of the compound, all the while wondering what Erron could possibly need her there for.
"Hey darlin'," Erron is standing near one of the large doors, his arm resting on a black pickup.
"What's going on?" Echo cocks her head and Erron gestures for her to get in the truck.
"Just get in."
The sun is setting in earnest as the pickup roars to life and exits the garage. Echo watches as they meander on roads that steadily become rougher and rougher until finally, she can no longer make out the landscape through the darkness.
"Where exactly are we going?" she glances over at Erron, but his expression is unreadable.
"Don't worry about it," he steers the truck up a steep incline, and Echo clutches the center console.
When the truck comes to a stop, she can tell they're up high, and Erron is rummaging in the backseat. When he finishes, he's holding a blanket and Echo raises an eyebrow.
"Erron, I need an explanation-"
"You ever seen the northern lights?" the cowboy points skyward as he speaks.
"No.."
Erron turns a knob and the truck's headlights are extinguished; in the absence of their blinding glow, Echo notices that the sky is alight in hues of green and purple, dancing on the horizon.
"Come on-" Erron opens his door and Echo follows; the cowboy slings the heavy blanket around her shoulders and lowers the tailgate, gesturing for her to sit.
Echo looks up and a small gasp falls from her lips at the sight above her. Erron watches her face, eyes wide as the colors shimmer across the inky black sky.
"Erron-" there's something in her voice that he can't place, almost a childlike wonder, "it's beautiful."
"You used to be able to see the damn things every night," Erron wraps an arm around her shoulders, "before all the lights and the noise."
Echo realizes what he means- he's been walking the earth for almost 200 years. She imagines him in some backwater town lit by gaslamps, staring up at the same incredible sight. The thought makes her smile.
"Thank you for this," Echo whispers, eyes still transfixed on the colors as they ripple through the darkness.
"Any time, darlin'."

megamind type beat (1/1)
warnings: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH
summary: If Nico asked, Will might even let the world fall to ashes around them.
word count: 2025
read on ao3
Will Solace was a little bit in love with Nico di Angelo.
Everything about Nico was perfect in Will’s eyes, despite how opposite the two of them were. While Will was incredibly extroverted, Nico was quiet and reserved, though when the two of them were alone, Nico would light up - and sometimes, it was difficult to get him to shut up once he got excited. The two of them already spent almost every waking hour together, but Will would make it more in a heartbeat if he could.
If Nico asked, Will might even let the world fall to ashes around them.
Nico knew more about Will than anybody in the world, though there was one secret Will had never been able to share, no matter how much he wished he could, and that was the truth about Will’s identity.
He knew nothing about Will’s superpowers, or the high-tech weapons that Will kept locked away but always nearby in case of a supervillain-sized emergency. It was the only thing that Will had ever kept from Nico, but every day Will felt like Nico never really knew the real him.
And, okay, he’d never told Nico how he felt about him, either.
Will never wanted to risk ruining their friendship over a dumb crush (which was how it started, but now Will really was fully head-over-heels in love with Nico), especially when Nico didn’t really seem to have many other friends, so Will had never acted on his feelings.
It didn’t help that, just about every time that he did plan some way to confess, the world would start falling down around them. And, of course, it was Will’s job to fix that.
As Solar Flare, Will was the perfect hero to fight Nightmare, a villain who only attacked the city at its darkest times, both physically and emotionally. He had confessed to Solar Flare once that he often waited until the city was at its weakest, late at night or after some kind of tragedy, because it would be easier to cause mass chaos and destruction. Will sometimes wondered if Nightmare caused those tragedies as a setup for the next night’s evil plan.
Will had been on his way to surprise Nico with pizza and video games when he heard the city’s siren go off. It was one that had formerly been used to warn about incoming tornadoes, but now was recognized to mean supervillains are attacking, take cover. Will had hastily handed off his box of pizza to a homeless man on the nearest corner before ducking into an alleyway to change into his bright white-and-yellow spandex suit. (Why did heroes always have to wear spandex? There was never any padding in those things, and he bruised like a peach.)
Will had appreciated the quietness of the last week - he’d gotten to spend plenty of time with Nico and caught up on some of the homework from his community college classes (because he couldn’t rely on a superhero’s salary forever) - though he’d been getting antsy about his next fight with Nightmare. He could feel that the other had had something cooking for sometime, and Will had a few new weapons he wanted to try out, as well.
He caught up with Nightmare in the middle of Central Park; it hadn’t been difficult to trace the pained screaming back to that spot. The villain’s clothes were always black as night, likely to make it easier for him to move around undetected in the darkness, and his head was surrounded by something similar to a solid black motorcycle helmet. When Will had first seen it, it had reminded him of Daft Punk - though mentioning that had gotten him shot with some kind of laser-ice-beam gun that left him with a minor case of frostbite in the middle of summer. Will was certain that the inside of that helmet was full of computer screens, similar to how Iron Man’s helmet looked in the movies.
Will tried to sneak up on him, but his helmet must’ve gotten an upgrade recently - new sensors, or maybe a backup camera - because that creepy, auto-tuned voice that the helmet produced announced, “You’re late to the party, Lampshade Man.”
Will huffed. “It’s Solar Flare, and you know that.”
“Sure,” Nightmare replied, “but you’re cute when you pout like that.”
Will blinked, thrown off guard for just a second, though it wasn’t long enough for Nightmare to spin around and shoot him with some kind of stun gun. Will avoided the shot easily, and charged forward in an attempt to tackle Nightmare, though the other seemingly vanished into thin air before appearing again a few feet away.
“What’s the plan, Nightmare?” Will demanded, staying on his toes but knowing that this game of cat and mouse would only tire himself out.
“I could ask you the same question,” he replied. “Haven’t you figured it out yet?”
He had, actually, but he’d wanted a confirmation. He’d stayed up too late after too many fights, piecing together little bits of information here and there until the wall of his bedroom looked like a total conspiracy theory board. Some of the weapons Nightmare had been testing, some of the things he’d mentioned from his past in his evil monologuing, it was all leading up to one thing. A machine that could suck the soul out of a person in order to bring someone back to life. The only thing Will couldn’t figure out was why.
His mind jumped back to Nico, as it so often did. How he’d mentioned the loss of a sister, and how he would do anything to bring her back, if only he’d had the power. It had broken Will’s heart at the time, and now, seeing Nightmare trying to do something similar, Will was filled with rage.
“You can’t play God,” Will told him, his voice shaking with anger. “Everybody loses somebody important, and there’s nothing you can do to bring them back. All you’re going to do is hurt innocent people, and make others feel the same pain of losing a loved one. Now, destroy your machine, or I’ll be forced to do it for you.”
“I’d like to see you try,” Nightmare said, holding up a remote and hitting one of the buttons. Suddenly, the screaming around them amplified as more people succumbed to what must have been a horrible pain. Will glanced around, trying to locate some sort of central point, though the noise was echoing all around them.
“What are you doing to them?” Will demanded, his eyes searching for Nightmare, though he only saw subtle flashes in the dark - the villain was taunting him, moving just too fast for Will to see.
“Draining the life out of them, of course,” Nightmare said, suddenly right behind him, and Will barely had a second to whip around and attack. Normally, he would aim for the head to incapacitate his enemy - a bank robber, or some drunk trying to start a street brawl - but the helmet prevented Nightmare from taking damage that way, so Will aimed for the stomach instead.
Luckily for him, it appeared that villains were a part of the spandex curse as well, because Nightmare had nothing to cushion the impact of Will’s elbow into his gut. Nightmare groaned from the hit, curling inward and allowing Will the time to spin around and continue his assault.
He’d never gotten close enough to touch Nightmare - always fighting with ranged weapons at a distance - but now that he could, he hardly believed that there was really a person inside Nightmare’s suit. His body was so cold to the touch, and whenever Will tried to grasp at an arm or a leg, his hand almost seemed to pass through him before finding purchase.
And Nightmare, it seemed, was better at hand-to-hand combat than he was with a weapon. Despite being smaller in stature, he nearly overpowered Will more than a few times, leaving Will to resort to reaching for a weapon for what he hoped was the last time.
He could end it all - he finally had Nightmare in his grasp, and he could finish him. Will could go back to fighting petty crime and spending his nights on the couch beside Nico, stuffing himself full of junk food and bingeing movies. He could get his life back, and all it would cost was him taking the life of someone else.
Wasn’t that what this was leading up to all along?
Will pulled a small, golden dagger from his belt and lodged it between Nightmare’s ribs, feeling the other man suddenly solidify, hearing him gasp through the strange auto-tuned effect, and then he collapsed, the remote falling out of his hand as he did so.
Will lunged for the remote. He couldn’t see it very well in the dark, but there were only a few buttons, so one of them had to be off. He jammed at each button until the screaming around them started to die down, no longer cries of active pain but of a slowly fading injury, shouts of fear and shouts for help.
Will would check on all of them soon. First, he needed to unmask his long-time enemy.
He could hear Nightmare’s pained breathing being projected through his helmet, though his breaths were shallow. Will could barely see any movement of his chest in the distant glow of the streetlight, though he saw the shine of blood pouring from the knife wound in his chest. Will knelt beside him and reached for the helmet, tugging it off without trying to cause any more unnecessary injury, and the object nearly slipped between his fingers when Will’s eyes landed on the face he revealed.
He tossed the helmet aside, bending down to get a closer look and brushing the hair out of the other man’s face and there was Nico, his Nico, the love of his life with a knife wound in his chest, Will’s knife sticking out of his chest, and Will couldn’t breathe.
“No,” Will choked, forgetting everything he learned from his CPR training and pulling Nico’s head to rest on his lap as tears started to streak down his face. “No, this can’t be happening. You can’t be--”
“Will,” Nico croaked, and Will’s heart stopped, but no, Nico wasn’t looking at him - he was looking past Will. He wasn’t about to beg Will for mercy, or plead for his life, or demand to know why his best friend had done this to him. He was calling, reaching out for some sense of comfort in the end, and Will felt himself sob.
“I’m right here,” Will whispered, reaching to apply pressure to the wound without jostling the knife, though Nico still grimaced in pain. “Sorry, I’m sorry. Nico,” he cried, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know, I would never-- I love you, Nico, and help is on the way, okay? I’ll save you - I’ll do whatever it takes. I promise.”
“Will,” Nico tried again, and the movement of his tongue pushed a drop of blood from the corner of his mouth, “hurts.”
“I know,” Will replied, his vision clouding with tears. “Don’t talk, Nico. Save your strength. You’ll be okay.”
“Can’t--” Nico wheezed, and coughed, and choked.
“Nico,” Will said, louder than before, begging for his attention. “Nico, look at me.”
Nico’s eyes rolled back, and his head tipped to follow. Will patted his cheek, trying to wake him up once more, though all he did was smear Nico’s face with his own blood.
“No, no, no,” Will choked, curling forward to press his forehead to Nico’s. “I’m sorry, Nico, please, I’ll do anything!”
Nico didn’t move. He didn’t breathe.
Will lowered him back to the ground, and felt his hand hit something as it slid out from underneath Nico’s head.
The remote.
The remote to the machine Nico had created to bring his sister back to life. The remote that, at the cost of one other human life - or more, Will didn’t actually know - could bring Nico back to him.
Could Will bring himself to make that sacrifice?
His thumb hovered over the buttons.

Just finding this? This is part 7 of a series! Here's the link to chapter one 🪓!
Triggers: marijuana use, alcohol use
The following are notes transcribed by the Coloeado Bureau of Investigation after they recovered a box of tapes found at the last known location of Tobias "Ticci Toby" Adams and his hostage turned wife, Grace Adams.
I slid behind the wheel as Toby closed the back door. Tommy had been too tired to make it back to the car, and Toby carried him the rest of the way. By the time we'd made it back to the car, the sun was going down, so I flicked on the headlights. I had three hours to get to wherever we were meeting this Kate.
Toby requested that we go by his place so he could grab something. I waited in the parking lot with the lights off until Toby jogged back to me, his hatchets hanging from some kind of holster in his hand. He got in, messing with its straps.
Toby strapped the holster across his chest, and I noticed it was a chest rig for holding a camera, but had been modified to hold the hatchets crossed across his back for an over the shoulder draw. The older one had the name "F. ROGERS" carved into its handle in neat, block letters.
"Frank's hatchet?"
Toby shrugged "I grabbed them after I started the fire and then ran."
"So Adams was your biological dad's last name" I deduced.
"Yeah. Mom tried to get Millie to take Frank's last name, so we'd sound like a family." He gently nudged my hand, which was on my thigh as I drove, and I took it, lacing my fingers with his. "But Frank was a bastard and Millie and I didn't want to be associated with him."
"I don't blame you" I said as I squeezed his hand.
"Besides, I had a hard enough time at school without being Mr. Rogers."
I laughed then, "Well, I don't care if you're Mr. Adams or Mr. Rogers; you're Toby to me, and you're stuck with me."
Ilooked over to see Toby smile out of my peripheral vision, and then he said, "I wouldn't have it any other way."
I smiled and Toby raised my hand to kiss my knuckles before releasing it so I could drive. He knew I had some driver's anxiety and let me concentrate.
"Turn up here " Toby told me and I turned into a liquor store. Toby threw a black hoodie over his hatchets and jogged inside, coming back with a large paper brown sack. He put it in the back floorboard. Tommy was still deeply asleep.
"Head towards Denver, we have just enough time."
And he was right. I pulled up to the address Slenderman had given Toby with just two minutes to spare. I got out of the car and followed Toby up to a newly built house, which matched all the other newly, not ready for occupation, homes in a new subdivision bragging a solar power system. The empty houses raised the hair on the back of my neck as I followed Toby inside.
The house smelled of fresh dry wall, the walls had probably only just dried. The concrete floor hadn't been carpeted yet and made our footfalls sound too loud. Toby went ahead of me, checking the rooms for occupants. He returned to me, "Kate isn't here yet."
Toby posted up in the window that overlooked the car and street, watching for Kate's arrival. I pulled up a step ladder and sat on it as Toby leaned on the windowsill. The streetlights lit up his angular face, and he kept his gaze trained outside, scanning the scenery.
"What's wrong, Toby? You seem tense."
He sighed, a long exhaustion of breath, "A little. I got so sick of being on my own, but now, I'm terrified that something will happen to you. My life isn't exactly... Tame."
I stood and walked behind Toby and wrapped my arms around him, resting my head against his back, between his crossed hatchets. I heard his heartbeat speed up and then slow as he hugged mybarms to the front of him. I listened to the thick, strong sound of his heartbeat, and we both jumped when the back door opened. Toby reached for a hatchet just as someone entered the room.
She stood at about five feet, and four inches, not too different from my own stature, weighing around one hundred and ten pounds. She had shoulder length black hair and wore brown boots, black jeans, and a heavily stained hoodie, covered in black smudges and blood stains. Her right cheek and boots also bore black smudges.
"Sorry I'm late, boss" she said in a thick Loiuisiana accent. Her voice was a sultry, low baritone that would be perfect for phone sex. "My date with Elsie ran long, so I was almost late to hit my" she noticed I was standing hand in hand next to Toby, "Target... Who's this?"
"This is Reader, Kate. She's my... She's mine."
"Oh? Yours, huh?" Kate asked in teasing tones, and then came and gave Toby a loud clap on the shoulder, "Good for you, boss, I'm glad you moved on."
Toby ducked his head shyly and Kate continued.
"There's been a lot of killing going on lately, outside of what we do. Slendy's sure it's Jeff. He also said something about 'the one who waits behind the wall' and his 'infernal brother', but you didn't hear it from me." Kate was pacing in front of us, talking as if she were giving her general a briefing, and in a way, she was. "Problem is, there's more killings going on than even Jeff could pull off alone. I've caught some little freaks running around with makeup done to look like him, say they're in a gang."
"The Little Smiles" Toby said darkly.
"Wait" I said, "I hate to interrupt, but, who's Jeff? And why do you make 'the Little Smiles' sound so scary?"
"No, it's alright, Reader, you need to know." Toby took a deep breath and began, "A few years after my Master took me, I had an attack of conscious and turned myself in to the Forest Lawn PD. They immediately put me in Pinehurst and I started sessions with a doctor that seemed like he could actually help me. Until this other patient slit his throat. I ran into him and he got a surprise when he stabbed me in the thigh and I didnt even flinch. Then I heard my Master's call and had to go." He pushed his hair out of his eyes, "That guy was Jeffrey Mason, or Jeff the Killer. He killed his entire family and a few kids from school and hasn't slowed down yet. The Little Smiles are like his cul, I guess. Teenagers who idolize him."
"So you're telling me that there's a gang of teenagers running around doing a killer's dirty work?" I asked in astonishment.
Toby nodded grimly, "Kate, be careful out there. Last year, I ran into one of his followers, Nina. It... Wasn't pretty."
"You got it, boss."
Toby grumbled at her to stop calling him boss, shuffling his feet a little while I rubbed slow, soothing circles on the top of his hand with my thumb. Kate's grey blue eyes watched me. "Go home to Elsie, Kate."
Kate's eyebrows rose in surprise, "My, aren't we getting sentimental under Reader's influence."
Toby shot Kate a warning glare, "Shut up, Kate, I remember when you first found Elsie."
Kate blushed, "Bye, boss!"
And with that, she was gone, hustling out of the room before Toby had a chance to expose her softer side more.
I let out a low whistle in the silence that followed, "Is it just me, or are you more confused than before Kate's report?"
Toby laughed, "It's just you. I've got someone that we can see tomorrow who might be able to shed some light."
"Oh yeah?" I asked as Toby ushered me outside, back to the car, and opened my door. I slid in and he closed the door behind me.
"Mmhmm" he hummed as he sat in the passenger seat and closed his door. "Quick question, do you smoke weed?"
"Ah, one of those visits?" He nodded. "Yeah, I could smoke. It's been a while though."
"You'll be fine. Caleb's pretty cool."
Tumblr media
Later that night, after we'd settled Tommy into his place on the floor, Toby and I sat at the table. A large bottle of whisky sat on the table along with two glass tumblers. A bottle of cola sat at my elbow. I'd ixed your double shot of whisky with cola, however, Toby had drank his straight, grimacing at the taste, since I knew he couldn't feel the burn.
"How are we going to figure out if the Little Smiles are behind the killings?" I asked Toby.
"I'll talk to Caleb, find the latest crime scene, stake it out and wait until we can look around. They usually leave a signature behind. They're proud of their work, and want Jeff to know who did it."
"We?"
Toby nodded and poured us both another double, "You're part of this now. Don't worry. I'll make sure you're safe. I can even teach you how to handle yourself."
I finished pouring cola into my glass and capped it before taking a big drink. "I know, I trust you. You know what you're doing."
Toby laughed dryly, like he didn't believe that, and downed his drink in one gulp, then rose to put the empty glass in the sink. I drank mine as quickly as was graceful and put my glass in the sink next to his. Toby turned out the overhead lights and I found my way to the foot of the bed where he stood, stepping over Tommy. The only light in the room was what crept around the sides of the curtain, but it was just enough.
Toby took my hand and pulled me into him, hugging me to him. He held me close as he swayed to a song in his head. We slow danced in the dark with him for a moment, following the rhythm of his body.
"You two are so cute" Tommy mumbled sleepily from behind my back.
"Go to sleep, Tommy" Toby replied curtly.
Tommy giggled, but I heard him turn over.
"We should get some sleep too" Toby said into my hair. Then he let me go and went to the side of the bed he'd slept on last night, "Tomorrow's gonna be an interesting day."
He pulled his shirt over his head, having left his hatchets in their holster, his boots, and sweater vest next to the door when he came in. Then he shoved down his pants and stepped out of them, then crawled in between the sheets.
I had found one of my spare black tank tops in the car, left behind after laundry day, and had put it on under the black long sleeve Toby had given me. The leggings were lightweight enough to sleep in, so I got in the bed next to Toby as he laid on his back, left arm out to make room for me on the twin mattress. I cuddled into the side of his body, and he guided my face to his and kissed me softly. I could taste the whisky on his breath as his lips moved against mine, his scars catching slightly, and its smokey flavor seemed right for Toby. I kissed him until he told me he had to stop and I remembered Tommy on the floor.
So I rested my head on Toby's chest after stealing one more kiss. The sound of his heartbeat lulled me to sleep better than any lullaby.
Tumblr media
I woke with a start to smell something burning. Then the gray blanket that was covering Toby and I flew back into my face and I pulled it down to find Toby running across the room to the kitchenette. Tommy stood at the hotplate, smoke billowing around him.
I ran to Tommy and moved him out of Toby's way as Toby grabbed the smoking, flaming skillet and shoved it into the sink and turned on the water. The flames extinguished with a hiss.
"It looked so easy when you and Toby did it yesterday" Tommy explained to me.
Toby laughed then, a deep belly laugh that made him double over, "It's okay, Tommy. Just leave the cooking to us from now on."
Tommy nodded, eyes still a little wide as you checked him over for burns. He had none, luckily, and Toby's skin on his right hand was a little pink, the equivalent of a sunburn, which he couldn't feel anyway.
Toby and I realized Toby was only in his boxers and I blushed and looked away, but not before taking in his long, leanly muscled frame. He sent me a confident wink as he passed me to the dresser next to the bed, causing me to blush more.
Tommy had burned the last of the breakfast bowls, so Toby put some hot pockets in the toaster oven. He found the waffles and threw them in the trash, still in the box, much to Tommy's dismay. Tommy retrieved the box from the empty trash can and snuck them back into the freezer when Toby wasn't looking.
The toaster oven finished and I moved the food onto a plate while Tommy carried glasses of water to the table for me and him. I took a drink to wash away some of the minty freshness left in my mouth from brushing my teeth after getting dressed. Toby sat on his milk crate, his hands shaking slightly as he held his coffee.
"Are the meds starting to leave your system?" I asked, acknowledging his tremor as I pushed his bangs out of his eyes.
A slight tic ran through him, causing his head to jerk slightly to the right as he grimaced, his neck popping. "Yeah... It's okay though. Caleb should have something to help me out. He always does. But we have to go back towards Forest Lawn. He lives right outside of town."
Tommy and I ate our food while Toby savored his coffee and looked out the window, which he had opened to let the smoke out. I tried to get Toby to eat one of the hot pockets, but he only told me that he'd eat plenty later with a secret smile.
After we'd eaten, we drove back towards Forest Lawn and I noted I'd need to get gas soon. I turned down the dirt road Toby pointed out to me. I followed a dirt lane through a wooded area that spat us out into a picturesque clearing where a quaint, two story ranch house sat alongside a small greenhouse.
"I've always wanted a place like this, but in the mountains" Toby said as we all got out of the car.
"It's beautiful" I said, and it was.
A brown headed man with a reddish brown beard came out of the greenhouse's side door. He wore a red flannel shirt and blue jeans on his burly, six foot frame. He was barefoot and looked to be mine and Toby's age, maybe a few years younger. He had the same circles under his eyes as Toby, as if he didn't get enough sleep. A fat orange tomcat followed behind him, his tail swishing in a friendly manner.
"Toby! It's been a while, dude."
"Yeah" Toby said, "things got weird for a while, but I'm past it. This is Grace and Tommy."
"Ah, what's up, I'm Caleb" he bumped fists with Tommy, then offered his fist to me. I tapped my knuckles into his and then we all followed him into the house.
The living room was cozy, but decorated sparsely, abstract watercolors on paper hung on the walls. Metal played softly from speakers bookending a big screen tv, which played vintage episodes of Star Trek. A plush, brown couch and recliner sat around a coffee table, which held a jar containing marijuana, a bong, a pipe, a glass straw, a butane torch, a blue and green silicone thing with a metal cyllinder sticking out of one end, a lighter, and two of the smallest jars I'd ever seen. It also had an open bag of chips, shoved precariously close to the edge of the table, and a honeybun still in the wrapper. I could see a washer/dryer combo in the hall that I assumed led to the bathroom and stairs, and the dining area of the kitchen in front of glass patio doors. A great, fuzzy dog played with a goofy, long legged black puppy in the back yard.
Toby cracked his neck, another tic, and Caleb noticed. "Need some help, man?" and then he sat in the recliner, pulling out a tray that had broken up weed on it, "I just got done curing some Proxy Punch and was just about to try it out. Move over, Tiger, let them sit down."
"Proxy Punch?" Toby asked and sat heavily on the couch as the tomcat moved. I sat next to him and Tommy took the end closest to the TV, already absorbed in Star Trek.
Caleb nodded and started stuffing ground weed into the bowl of the bong. When he was finished, he handed the bong and a lighter to Toby. Toby took it and lit it while inhaling through the mouthpiece of the bong, and then he pulled the bowl up, clearing the smoke from the bong. He held the smoke and handed the bong to me. I repeated the process before the flame could go out and handed the bong back to Toby, holding my breath. I decided Tommy didn't need to partake, unsure of how he would react and he seemed perfectly content with the TV.
I blew out my smoke shortly after Toby and could already feel my muscles relaxing. My mind didn't exactly slow, but everything took on a subdued, dreamy quality. I took another hit when the bong made it back to me and then it was passed back to Caleb.
"I also made some concentrate from it. Wanna try :3?" (I am legally obligated to type that face). He picked up the glass straw and one of the tiny jars and opened it. It held a little lump of orange stuff that looked like wet sugar.
"I'm okay" I said, my high just right, "But you two go ahead." I leaned back into the couch and watched as Caleb tried to teach Toby what to do, finally heating the end of the glass straw for him and showing him where to put it in the jar while he told him to breathe in.
Toby broke out into coughs as sweet, citrusy smelling smoke flowed from his mouth.
"Whoa, easy there Tobes. It's easy to get too much" Caleb explained as I tried to help Toby. Speaking of coughs, I thought, mine had been mysteriously absent ever since meeting Slenderman. I wondered why and then it was gone.
Caleb repeated the process easily, but the coughs caught him too. Next thing I knew, Caleb and Toby were slapping each other on the back, red faced, trying to help each other breathe.
Once they could breathe, Toby and Caleb caught up, and Caleb had information.
"Yeah, Jeff's been by. But he's acting... Weirder than usual."
"Hm. What about anyone else? People trying to look like Jeff, maybe?"
"Yeah, those little creeps show up trying to meet him way after he's already left."
"Do you know any crime scenes around town?"
"There was one a street over from where you grew up." Caleb replied, "Someone... Else came by, a few weeks ago." He sounded reluctant to bring it up.
"Who?" Toby asked like he already knew the answer and wasn't happy about it.
"It was Natalie" Caleb said, looking down as he fidgeted with his lighter.
I didn't know Toby could get paler, his skin taking on the same gray tint it had at the hospital. Whoever Natalie was caused a bad reaction in Toby, and Caleb loaded the pipe and handed it to him, "She was weird too, like Jeff. Hit that, Tobes, it'll make you feel better."
Toby and Caleb smoked and soon Toby was relaxed again. Tiger bumped up against my leg I followed him into the greenhouse. Six plants sat in the greenhouse, all in full flower. Two pots still holding dirt sat next to the door and buds were being dried on the table in the center. Caleb wasn't following Colorado weed laws, not surprising. Colorado residents over twenty one could have three of six plants budding at one time and he had obviously just harvested another two. But, no harm came of it, so I'd keep it to myself. I checked out each plant with Tiger then sat at the table, which was covered in carvings. One in particular stood out to me. "TA+NO".
TA was definitely Toby. I recognized his chicken scratch handwriting. But who was NO? Natalie...
"Ouelette." Millie finished for me in my head and I looked for her.
"I'm just in your head, Grace."
Oh. I stopped looking for her, feeling foolish.
"Natalie Ouelette, aka Clockwork. She used to be Toby's girlfriend. But one day, she took Toby to the hospital where you found him in Pueblo. He'd been there before, and she had him admitted. She played the victim card perfectly and abandoned him there."
My heart broke for the betrayal Toby had gone through, and his caution suddenly made sense. He'd just picked up the pieces of his heart when I met him. He didn't want it broken again. He must trust me immensely. Luckily, I couldn't even dream of doing such a thing. I knew Toby wasn't a saint. He was some Eldritch beings general, and assassin. I'd felt Slenderman's age in my head like a weight. Toby wasn't perfect, but he was mine.
"If she comes around making trouble," I told Millie, "I'll take care of it." I was suddenly fiercely protective.
"Take care of what?" Toby asked, having snuck up on me, and then he kissed my cheek.
"Just talking with Millie" I said, "assuring her that I've got you."
He smiled and nestled his face into the side of my neck, "I know you do. Come on, let's eat."
"You?! Willingly eating?!"
Toby gave me a goofy grin, "The munchies wait for no man."
So Ifollowed him into the kitchen and supervised as Toby and Caleb deep fried chicken strips and fries, completely stoned.
"Grace, you have to try this ketchup."
I took Tommy some food and a zip lock baggie of sauces Caleb had collected from various restaurants. When I returned, Caleb had gotten out different jars of sauce.
Caleb smiled proudly, "I realized that tomato plants and weed plants are both in the nightshade family. So I spliced a tomato plant with a Blue Dream plant and made this ketchup." I tried some and it tasted great, sweet and tangy with just a hint of spice. I waited for the cannabis infusion part to blow me away and was pleasantly surprised thirty minutes later with a low level body buzz.
The day passed like this, filtered through the blue gray weed smoke. Toby kept true to his word and ate way more than I'd ever seen him eat before. When the sun started going down, Caleb offered me and Toby his guest room down the hall. Tommy was already knocked out on the couch, the radio playing softly. Caleb smoked a nightcap with the two of us, and then retired to his room upstairs.

Tiger is based off a real cat. This cat. Any comparisons to other actual cats is purely coincidental
Also, @mybloodisthc is composing a soundtrack for this and I just 🥺

i'd only lived in the city city for two years but it's amazing how quickly you acclimate to the noise, the throngs of people, the constant light. where we live now is very similar to the type'a land i grew up on - not suburban in the classical sense, but definitely not fully rural - and it's so...dark at night. no streetlights here at all. no lights besides the little solar pathway lights we put up, and they die around midnight because the tree cover here is so intense the batteries never get the chance to fully charge.
we get plenty of cars passing during the day - it's a dead end cul de sac so that's the name of the game if any of our neighbors want to get out - but the noise is overwhelmingly wildlife based. shrieking cicadas. the hoots of owls. squirrels chittering. song birds. shit i didn't really realize i missed until suddenly i have it and i have to adjust to it again.
we've got deer in the backyard. i can't put up bird feeders and the like bc of avian flu, but i can chuck corn and fruit to the deer that wander through the property at night. where my apartments were, all you'd see are birdies, domesticated dogs, and the rare opposum and raccoon - none of which i ever interacted with.
we've also got stray cats that've tried rifling through our trash. and i know it's cats and not other critters bc i've accidentally scared them off. fast little bastards. we've got space on the front porch where our dogs never go, so we've sat up some kibble and fresh water that we refresh every few hours, since it's been so miserably hot out. the neighbors say they're feral and don't outright say they view 'em as nuisances, but we're fully commited to offering them food daily and then shelter once the fall comes 'round.
idk why it's got me like...sentimental, bc while this is still virginia it's not even appalachia anymore but 😩 i guess i miss home while not missing home if that makes sense, and while i do gotta decompress and shift from living downtown big city to living on the outskirts of a smaller county outside of said big city, it v much reminds me of roanoke. just flat. 🤔
anyway we're trying to get pictures of the cats and deer but it's so gd dark the security cameras make out fuck all 😩 gotta remedy that shit I guess 😔🤙

GEORGIA GUIDESTONES STRUCK BY LIGHTNING?
Major Ozone Loss, Solar Watch, Georgia Guidestones | S0 News Jul.7.2022
If the camera caught the explosion, then it would have also caught the planting of the explosive. Instead, it caught the increased pulse of a nearby streetlight, along with a blue light illuminating the guidestones during the explosion.
