"ЭТАЖИ (Etazhi)" / Molchat Doma
Year: 2018
Country: 🇧🇾 (Belarus)
Genre: Cold wave / Dark synth / Dark wave / Post-punk / Soviet wave
If you are interested in the history of the USSR you have probably ever come across a video with a song from this album. That edgy, eighties mystique, plus the songs in Russian, are a hit when combined with images of posters or Soviet architecture. Oh, and the songs are quite danceable so don't be surprised if they get stuck in your head.
Fave song ⭐: "На Дне (Na Dne)"

The two most popular reads of the synth plight in Fallout 4 are that of the race allegory and the Red Scare/McCarthyist allegory. In the former example, synths get racialized in a similar way to Black Americans in the late 19th and early 20th century, but just barely. The Underground Railroad is quite literally remade, synths are subjected to slavery at the hands of their human creators and punished harshly for escape attempts. Others have likened synths to fears of immigrants or asylum-seekers from nonwhite majority populations. Synths in these imaginings of Fallout 4 are painted as needing to be saved at the same time as they are vilified and dehumanized – sometimes by the same character over the course of the story. This duality could be a great opportunity for a dive into how white saviorism tends to play out, but in reality it ends up being a messy, deeply uncritical exploration of the impact of race and racism in society. The factions doing the racialization and/or saviorism’s motives are never questioned, and there is a very clear depiction of “good vs. evil” being the end-all-be-all of anti-racism work (again, with no critical thought as to how the “good” side is made almost completely of non-racialized people making decisions on behalf of a marginalized group). Worse yet, it’s contrived. The android-racism analogy has been a thorn in the side of the science fiction genre ever since Isaac Asimov wrote the 3 Laws of Robotics. There’s very few iterations on the idea that have come from popular (white, Eurocentric) media that aren’t riddled with the same aftertaste of white guilt and fundamental misunderstandings of how racism plays out in day-to-day life.
The less common, slightly more agreeable interpretation is that of the Red Scare – which, given Fallout’s inspirations and the setting’s original critique of reliving America’s “good old days”, makes perfect sense. In this example, synths take the role of the Soviet spy: watching over everything Americans are doing and reporting back to a secret base that is plotting to overthrow the world as we know it. Psychological screenings as well as inhumane tortures are utilized to pick synth “spies” out from the good, red-blooded residents of the Commonwealth. A neighborhood is founded entirely around the protection of the “old ways of life”, complete with a white picket fence comically decorated with automatic machine gun turrets. While this is a more charitable analogy that’s grounded in a slightly-deeper-than-surface-level exploration of American history, the Red Scare interpretation is victim to the same pitfalls that plague the racism interpretation. Midway through the game, the player discovers that there actually is a secret base of evil villains hiding underneath our feet, plotting to annihilate our beautiful Commonwealth lives. People do get taken and replaced by synths, they are in our governments, there is an actual reason for synths to be feared. Sure, some synths are perfectly fine people with no wish to be made tools of the Institute’s tyranny, but that is greatly overshadowed by the fact that the Institute’s stated goal is to use synths to gain control over the Commonwealth. There is no real critique of McCarthyism, there is no ideology to be challenged, because the Communists are here and killing your loved ones in their sleep.

Cover suggestion: level one - Close game offline
youtube
✅ POIGRAEEEEEEEEM
✅ PO PO PO PO PO PO PO
✅ peak gamer music
✅ look at that music video holy fucking shit man
✅ actually a good song
✅ the lyrics actually go hard.. “the computer is on, reality is dead! You can hear my voice, I can see you! Take my life and the virus will be dead! Victory awaits us on the graphic battlefield!”
❌ not a Vocaloid song
❌ it’s in Russian which could be excused if it was a Vocaloid song but refer to the point above
❌ nobody except for a selected group of nostalgic individuals grown up in post soviet countries is even aware of this song’s existence
❌ this song’s existence is a scam because the producer stole an instrumental track from Scooter THE band, sped it up (except for that one dramatic part that actually has the original instrumentals and they’re very clear), added synths, added the Gamer dude and made a song without Scooter’s KNOWLEDGE and without CREDITING them
✅ but this song still goes hard and it would be funny seeing these close game offline characters sing it. It fits the trio

So a couple of months ago I needed a Belorussian 80s pop song for something I was writing, and YouTube decided that, clearly, I wanted Soviet disco-synth recommendations (and I won’t say no). Anyway, I was thinking what could I ever possibly do with them? And I think I have an idea.
For a book canon specifically, where Armand is from the Kiev Rus, during the Devils Minion arc, at one point Daniel suggests Armand get back in touch with his roots. And sure, maybe “the Kievan Rus no longer exists as a meaningful political entity, yeah Armand, I know, you’ve said” the actual place Armand is from has changed, but this is what becomes of it!
After the first hour, he’s heard more of the music than he ever expected. By the sixth, it’s going to haunt him until the end of days, by the end of the third day of listening ring to nothing but Soviet synth, it’s started to infect his dreams.
He doesn’t know what any of it means, Armand doesn’t really understand what any of it means either for that matter.
And then, like everything else, the phase will end, and Armand will move onto a new fascination.

More new (old) stuff! Recorder Mirror / September, 1983 - I hardly believed that I've spotted a small ad on my phone late in the night about this cover picture from an online Hungarian auction gallery (!). I visited the site where I found 2 old, British magazines with Dave on the front page. I love these two, well known portraits, I checked its price, than there was no question any more, I've bought them for total 15€. Never block ads, they love you.

Dave Thomas: Depeche Mode - what else? <3 My favourite vinyl dealer brought me a book from 1986, Thomas wrote a whole book with colored photos about a young, British synth band just before releasing their 5th studio album. Nice to see them in focus before the world hit of MFTM or Violator.

BRAVO poster from 1986 - I met at last with my DJ mate from 2008 who discovered my DM video "cunami" on facebook after 2023 concert. He is a kind of veteran Hungarian fan, which means he was at 15 DM concerts at least, including some gigs before 1990, the collapse of Soviet communism. He lives in the country with kids, it was a bit difficult to organize this meeting, we had a lot of common topics to discuss… He brought me this little gift from his childhood. These (West) German BRAVO posters were real treasures in ths 1980s even with a spot of some drink on it.

It's genuinely sad to me that some non-Russian comrades here love and appreciate Soviet/Russian punk and post-punk more than the younger generation in my own country.
I don't even know who upsets me more, kids (actually one of them is just a couple years younger than me so it baffles me even more) who don't even know who Letov or Tsoy are, or the ones who say their songs sound shitty or make no sense. You have no idea what you're talking about, do you, you little tiktok addicted cunt.
sorry that was mean of me.
Here's a beautiful song by Yanka Dyagileva, one of the most prominent figures of the Siberian underground scene. She wasn't the most public person and her tragic early passing is riddled with conspiracies, but the most important thing about her is the raw talent in her poetry and the instantly recognizable voice.
youtube
I have never ever heard anything that could sound like soviet punk. And since similar things sometimes are evoked by much more modern music on the post soviet scene, reaching as far as to synth-pop and so many different genres across not just Russia alone, I think it's that thing we actually do carry in ourselves despite having very different views on our countries, on USSR, on our past and present.
It's that same feeling the panel apartment buildings can't help but evoke. That fucking doomer aesthetic if you wanna call it that.
It might not be the most beautiful and clean and positive thing in the world, but it feels so much more patriotic (even though I'm not and I don't think I ever will be) than whatever that hitler jugend looking lapdog popstar they're shoving down our throats is spewing. It's the March snow with black dots on its spongy surface. It's the foggy cigarette breath under yellow windows of panel houses. It's the liminal underground passage with a basking guitarist singing Letov's words that are jumping off the echoy walls.
November splin's getting to me, isn't it.
UPD. I am not touching on the contents of soviet punk/post-punk deliberately, because there's too much to unpack and we would spend the whole day here. Today is just vibes appreciating day.

I wanna write up a little bit for each track on the new album. First track is Oh Boy, embedded below.
As music written for the opening of a Disco Hamlet play, I wanted the track to open with an EXTREME 70s sound. I liked the idea having a whooshing synthesizer chord with the filter opening up, getting thicker and fuller. I used an old soviet string synth because it uses the same tech as the 70s string sounds like on I Feel Love, which was a big inspiration here.
I like that it sounds like being transported into a different time and place - I love that theatre can create new worlds and I loved the idea of having a clear cue the play was beginning. And the sound itself kind of reminds me of the soundtrack to Stalker, which always had a cool otherworldly vibe for me.
The melody came to me on a walk, I hummed it into my phone then played it on guitar. I arranged the chords afterwards to match the movement, and then I arranged a few versions - a disco backbeat version that later became the reprise, a pure orchestral one, and a synth/guitar duet.
In the end the synth/guitar arrangement and the orchestral parts were what stuck and so this short introduction to the album was born. Plenty of people have heard this but despite 20 000 streams counted for the album already from the singles no one has actually streamed this track yet which is giving me anxiety so please SOMEBODY put this on, it's good background music.
💖💖💖💖
ps if you want me to get deeper into the nuts and bolts of the music, like how I used suspensions in the orchestral parts to exaggerate the sense of space, or how the use of genre is intentionally

Get to Know Me Tag
thank you so much for the tag @sillylittleflower !!! :)
do you make your bed? uhhh i'm usually always late and slow in the morning anyway so that would add an unnecessary step to my (non-existent) morning routine. but i like arranging the blankets and pillows nicely after putting on new sheets
what's your favorite number? i don't think i have a favorite number...? but i do like numbers that are very easy to combine in my head. like.... the number sequence (arithmetic sequence?) of 5 because that's all my brain can handle
what is your job? well, mainly i'm studying at university, but i do work in a book store 10hs a week
if you could go back to school, would you? i assume this is referring to actually going back to that time. so, in terms of having no real responsibilities etc., yes absolutely! regarding any other aspect of it: fuck no, hated going there
can you parallel park? i don't have a driver's license so... i don't think so haha
a job you had that would surprise people? i've only ever done some some kind of internships. one at a retirement home and one at the city hall. would that surprise anyone?
do you think aliens are real? yes *aliens exist by blink-182 starts playing*
can you drive a manual car? again, no driver's license
what's your guilty pleasure? watching reels on ig that come from a very weird and specific corner of the internet
tattoos? i have two. one is roman numerals for 182 (referring to the band blink-182) below my collar bone, and one on the back of my arm, above my elbow, that says "born to lose", which refers to a song by zebrahead. but i do want a lot more!!!
favorite type of music? i loooove anything fast paced. punk, rap, rock, etc. but i also enjoy new wave, goth, soviet synth pop
favorite color? i like a lot of colors in certain contexts if that makes sense...? i'd have to go way too much into detail so uhh generally, i like looking at yellows, pinks, purples, greens
do you like puzzles? i used to love doing puzzles when i was younger, but i don't think i have the patience anymore
favorite childhood sport? i did gymnastics as a kid and played handball & tabletennis in a club, but i enjoyed volleyball at school the most
do you talk to yourself? out loud not really, but in my head 24/7
what movies do you adore? i thought that hereditary and saltburn were reaaallyyy good, i really enjoyed watching them!! but i also absolutely adore the emporer's new groove lmfao
coffee or tea? difficult to say because i like both. i usually get chai lattes when i'm out so i'll go with tea for this one (if that counts??)
first thing you wanted to be growing up? a vet but then i realized that i'd have to see suffering animals and that made me too sad
and if you're reading this rn - feel tagged! :)

Reflections: Cillian Murphy’s Limited Edition
Season 3, episode 4
✨almost 2 weeks late✨
———————————————————————
*I am a music prof (predominantly classical vocalist), and I LOVE listening to Cillian’s music choices! That being said, sometimes I won’t like a song simply because of a vocalist (it’s a professional hazard - sorry!) 👩‍🏫
** The following are my own observations/opinions. We may not agree, and that’s ok! That’s what makes music fun! 😊
*** I wouldn’t say I’m well-versed in Cillian’s music preferences, but I do enjoy them (for the most part). I always wind up adding to my own playlists after listening to Cillian’s recommendations.
———————————————————————
Hi everyone, thanks for your patience! Here are my thoughts on episode 4:
🎵Set 1 (Makondi - Theme from Failure)
Makondi: percussion makes me so happy! 😊 no specific thoughts other than there needs to be more percussion songs heard in the mainstream.
Hey Dostla!: ok but the background rhythm reminds me of the “Lip Gloss” song by Lil Mama and that’s all I hear now 😂
Theme from Failure: I like the gradual building of rhythmic layers. Again, definitely inspired by minimalist/tape looping technology from the ‘60s. More importantly, this song had me rolling! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🎤Talking Break:
Of course he prefers Autumn (or as I say, Fall, because I’m American and “leaf fall down”😂)
Of course he watches an old movie by the fire during a rain shower.
“Inane anecdote”
An exclusive!!!!
Oooohhh… playing with Ornette Coleman!
Awwww, sweet that he’s using music that his kids recommended!!
Fun - more Nina! 😊😊😊 and yes, now I wanna know why she hated this song/album.
🎵Set 2 (The Family - Time Is On My Side)
The Family: this is sooooo “trendy” for Nina! I need to listen to more of her discography rather than singles. I’m not sure how often she went more “pop” than jazz, and now I wanna know.
Please Don’t Go: Stevie!!!!! 😍😍 his voice is sooooo smooth! I could just listen to him all the time. And I like the chord qualities in this piece - it’s not an out-of-the-box chord progression, but it’s also not cookie cutter. There’s depth to what he gives without it going overboard.
Irma Talks: yes!! 😂
Time Is On My Side: I looooove this song! I think this is a very singable range (I know that sounds weird, but a lot of songs today are in difficult ranges for most of the population. This is pretty accessible).
🎤Talking Break:
I love how he takes these big long inhales before he talks, like he’s been through a taxing day or something 😂
I haven’t heard “iteration” more than usual… 🤔
🎵Set 3 (Come Down Easy - Kim’s Sunsets)
Come Down Easy: patterned off early rock, for sure! It’s even got that whiny/tinny vocal tracking. The weird drone is cool! Idk how to describe it other than the sound of the wind when you’re driving with your car windows rolled down 😅😂
Kim’s Sunsets: interesting harmonies, but I hate the vocal qualities here! 😖😖😖 I like it instrumentally, but vocally, this is an ick!
🎤Talking Break:
Nice! Instrumental music!
My Russian is no better, no worries!
I do love old film music, and it’s interesting to hear what was being used in Soviet film music, especially! I could go on, but y’all would prob find that boring 😅
🎵Set 4 (Boys and the Sea - Muscle de sable)
Boys and the Sea: I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! The piano sounds almost like French Classical music (a lot of artistic sharing between the French and Russians at one point), and the seagull call recording is so haunting! I kinda wanna watch this film just from listening to this!
Muscle de sable: also a piece featuring random recorded sound clips! Much more modern sounding.
🎤Talking Break:
You can definitely tell his mama taught him French - he’s VERY good at it!
🎵 Set 5 (One Word - Secret Teardrops)
One Word: this is pretty fun!!! 😎 no thoughts, just synth vibes!
Secret Teardrops: I find it interesting that the vocal line is less prominent than the instruments. 🤔 granted, this is not a super skillful vocal line…
🎤Talking Break:
I’m glad you liked Secret Teardrops, Cill, but it’s not my favorite. Sorry 🤷‍♀️
Recent music!
Grief and music is such a complicated relationship.
🎵Set 6 (The Greater Wings - Mole in the Ground)
The Greater Wings: wow. This is so beautiful and touching. I’m in my feelings now.
Mole in the Ground: this transitioned so well from one song to the next! Instrumentally, it’s gorgeous. Sadly, I hate the mumble lyrics. 😖
🎤Talking Break
Ok but so many albums are dropping in my birthday this year!!!
🎵Set 7 (Your Silent Face)
Your Silent Face: very synth. And I did not expect a harmonica in the mix… 😅
🎤Talking Break
Ask a reasonable question!!!
Dude. Why jalapeños on popcorn???? Like… I passionately support all things spicy, but this is a weird one for me
HE IS SHAMING HOT DOGS. I know they’re gross mystery meat, BUT. hot dogs are part of my heritage! 😂 besides, kosher hot dogs are kinda amazing and less gross.
🎵Set 8 (The Heights)
The Heights: this reminds me of something but I can’t figure out what. Either way, this is so atmospheric. I feel like I’m back in HS/early college and life was so much simpler (until you get to the end). That has no objective value; however, that’s what I’ve got!
🎤Talking Break: (sorta)
I don’t guitar, but this is such a great story!!!
Beginning musicians are such a vibe. We all suck but are so brave at the same time. 😂 I kinda miss being a beginner.
Blue Monk: I am LOVING this! Blues picking is fab. 😎
Casbah: ooohhhh. I like this as well! The pedal point is interesting (which is hard to do) and I like how the melody dances all over the place.
🎵Set 9 (Can I Call You)
Can I Call You: why is this spooky??? 😰 in other news, the way the expected chord progression is constantly diverted is cool! And even the structure of the song keeps going in unexpected places. Well-done, but somehow reminds me of Halloween spooky times. 👍
🎤Talking Break:
I love how ppl from across the pond (is that a reasonable way to say from the UK or Ireland?) “Graham” - Americans make it 1 syllable
Yorkshire Man: “the OG Kate Bush, herself”
“Jaunty baroque number”
🎵Set 10 (Bertie - Mirror in the Bathroom)
Bertie: I’m trying to decide if this deserves the term “baroque.” 🤔 Maybe? Most baroque music is polyphonic, and this is still distinctly homophonic. However, it might could qualify for “early baroque inspired” (circa 1600) with the choice of instruments and emphasis on text. I do like this! Definitely agree with the term “jaunty”
Kettle factory! ☕️
Mirror in the Bathroom: this is such a weird song but I like it 😂 I’m also starting to wonder if Cillian just likes stuff with sax solos. He’s chosen a lot this season!
🎤Talking Break:
I am shocked it took this long for him to play Zappa
“Obsessed with Frank Zappa” don’t try to downplay it, dude.
🎵Set 11 (Love)
Love: YES this has a major Zappa influence, even with the George Duke component. I haven’t listened to a lot of Zappa (he’s got so much and I honestly don’t even know where to start), but from what I’ve heard, this has his fingerprints all over it.
🎤Talking Break:
I love how concerned he is with lowering our collective heart rates/bpm 😂
🎵Set 12(Heart to Know - The Veil I)
Heart to Know: reminds me of Philip Glass (minimalist composer) a little bit (specifically lulls in his opera Einstein on the Beach).
My heart rate is lowered. 💗
The Veil I: the transition from Heart to this is weird, but I like this song, too! I feel like I’m in a video game with all the electronic sounds.
🎤Talking Break
“Gentle music”
I also wanna see this movie!
🎵Set 13 (Theme de l’eau - Prayer and Procession)
Theme de l’eau: I do often associate flute music with Japanese styles (and some of the non-Western scales), but this also has a Mediterranean feel to it (guitar), and somehow French as well (accordion). Again, there’s a lot of cultural ties between France and Japan, so that’s not super surprising. Yeah. I wanna see what this film is about! I’m curious!
Prayer and Procession: has some Chopin funeral March vibes to it, as well as Protestant chorale/hymn elements.
🎤Talking Break:
Noooo don’t go!
Yay! More song recs from the boys!
“Mind yourselves”
🎵Set 14 (Sleep - Crescent of Sun)
Sleep: … this song does NOT make me wanna sleep! 😳 Cillian Murphy! It is not Halloween yet! Quit with the spooky songs!
I thought he was supposed to be “lowering my heart rate” - psh! I call BS!
20190127: my slightly number dyslexic self hated writing out that title. 🤦‍♀️ anyway, this is MUCH more relaxing of a piece! Another great example of using recorded elements in music. I like how the tones fade in and out like the tide (heard at the beginning I think).
Crescent of Sun: it’s almost like chamber music at the beginning. I’m wondering if the sun is going down or up. The instrument voicing gets higher (indicating upward motion), but the melodic motif goes down. Huh. Interesting!
———————————————————————
Phew! I finally got episode 4 done! Now let’s see if I can crank out episode 5 within the next couple of days before getting to the final episode! (😭😭😭😭😭 this isn’t his real job and it’s a limited series and it has to end soon)
Anyway, thanks for reading!
