Culzean Castle... Greenhouse!

Living in a Castle Greenhouse.... why not?

Yesterday I posted about my inspiration for a build: the greenhouse at Culzean Castle ... I had a lot of fun with this build- I mean.... a mini castle, that's a green house, as a living space with a loft bedroom overlooking the living area?!? What's not to love?!?!

The exterior uses some of the "castle kit" and @felixandresims "gothic" build set.

Wes Wilson

Wes Wilson was one of the greats in the psychedelic design movement, whose work centred on the rock music of the 1960s. Wilson did not complete any official instruction in art or design but had an interest in art since he was a child. After a few years of military service and a short attempt at college, he joined a friend’s printing business around 1963 where he began his creative career.  

His first poster, designed in 1965, was one which reflected his disapproval of the U.S. becoming involved in Vietnam. The poster made a bold statement, portraying a USA flag with a swastika superimposed over the stars and bold text asking “Are We Next? Be Aware.” The symbolism used in this poster would be instantly meaningful worldwide but would have been particularly hard hitting in 60’s America, where their part in WWII was still fresh in the public’s conscious. Although the typeface used in this poster is less ‘psychedelic’ than the style he became known for in his career, it is similar in that it plays with the spacing and positioning of letters and adds flourishes to the lettering to add interest. Wilson created the poster to encourage his fellow countrypeople to take notice of the decisions being made by their government, and to avoid replicating the behaviours of the fascists they had just won a war against. The anti-Vietnam war stance was a widely-shared opinion within the youth culture of the 60s, particularly in 1965 when the US’ began bombing Vietnam more heavily. As such, the reach of Wilson’s poster was broad, with many people resonating with the concerns he portrayed so effectively.

Wes Wilson - ‘Are we next?’

In 1966, Wilson began working on concert poster designs, and quickly gained notoriety. Many of his posters featured the same typeface – one which Wilson redesigned based off the ‘curvy block lettering’ handmade by Austrian designer, Alfred Roller in 1903.

The result of Wilson’s reworking was a barely legible, psychedelic typeface. The font was reflective of the uptick in LSD use at the time, but it was also used as a means of simultaneously catching the eye of those in the know and deterring the attention of the uninitiated. The elements within Wilson’s posters were free flowing, filling all available space, stretching and melding together to do so. In the examples below, other trademark features of psychedelic design are apparent such as bright colours, varied texture, organic shapes, figures entwined with text, and use of optical illusion. Many of these features are the product of inspiration found in the Art Nouveau movement, which emphasized natural beauty, portraying ‘earthy’ women and patterns drawn from the natural world- themes which came back into fashion with the hippie movement. Wilson also expressed that many of his artistic choices were made based on his visual experiences while on psychedelic drugs.

Today, Wilson is often referred to as the father of the psychedelic rock poster. His ground-breaking styling, paired with historical art referencing and broad social commentary, has made his work timeless, despite its distinctly 60s aesthetics.

How many people has Dallas grown in just two years? Even if - in this suburban area - it's perhaps less noticeable, the business districts are taking on the colors of the major economic center this city will become. 'Growth', 'progress', 'household consumption', 'GDP' and 'international influence' are concepts that are hurting our proto-hippie souls. Just like segregation and inequality of all kinds, almost assumed by our 1963 America.

Our return was particularly violent, three months ago.

I've seen the 'Destiny's Children' take more than a week to dare cross the estate gates for provisions, start to fear the outside world, turn even more inward on their community. I've seen dozens of them get hand tattoos, and cling to pop or R&B Vedas. I've seen them start to dye all their clothes 'Tiffany-blue' - a brand that Beyoncé will one day be the face of - simply because Klaus referred to it as 'iconic' over lunch. Their devotion is joyful, but blind. Just before leaving for San Francisco, he didn't even need to quote them a single spiritual verse: to be left in peace, he made them 'commune with the music' by whistling a random note. No matter which one. I don't think he's aware that he's become a guru, but I think he's realized that I'd rather live another apocalypse than contemplate this any longer.

The atmosphere is that of Fridays, in the humble lanes linking the lower neighborhoods to the sidewalks of Avon Street. A couple of guys passing by have already commented that they don't like half my lineage, and I've ventured to tell them that their own ancestors would be ashamed of them for being such assholes. I'm aware that - unlike many of the people they pick on - I can make myself intangible, invisible, and teleport away if needed. I'm not afraid of answering them, unlike many. It's easy to take risks when there's nothing to fear. But since I can do it: then my little insult will also be in the name of all those who are forced to remain silent.

I chose to insert an OC - Rin - into the plot of The Umbrella Academy season 2, appearing almost only in deleted scenes. I try to give her an interesting story on her own. What to expect: digging into the psychology of the canon characters, seeing their daily lives through the eyes of an outsider, deciphering what's only skimmed over in the original series. A bit of fun, too, uh?

⌠ quintessa swindell. 25, pansexual, nonbinary, they/he. ⌡ wait a minute, is lake wright townsend still in town? i thought i saw a flash of (motorcycle boots, being the first one in the surf line up, and a vintage les paul strummed between breaks in paint strokes)! last i heard they were working as a(n) mechanic/artist nearby. when it’s the (aquarius)’ birthday on 01/07 i forget that they’re aloof and celebrate that they’re creative. i hear boys and girls by jaden every time i think of them.

lake townsend ( birth name to forever be unknown ) is a success story told by two white, wealthy californian artists that had found love and the desire to be parents too late, ultimately adopting lake and giving her a life that they wouldn’t have known without them.

lake didn’t know moments of wanting to know their birth parents, having put the thought out of their mind entirely due to the simple fact that they always felt like they BELONGED— a less than easy task for a baby found abandoned at a fire station, for a person of color learning and growing in a white community, for someone who’s always known and practiced fluid sexuality. somehow this has been lake’s story of finding belonging no matter where they are with the support of their loving, overly empathetic and understanding parents that rarely projected their own toxicity.

for the first ten years of life, lake grew up in the canyons of los angeles that attract artists, musicians, writers, actors, and folks representing an astounding variety of spiritual pursuits, including their family.

the townsends lived in topanga canyon, california, where there is a remarkable concentration of creative energy shot through with a general sense of good vibes. this looked like wild, wide-open spaces; enforced solitude; and an atmosphere that teeters between insular and inspiring.

it was very important to the people there that they respect nature and not try to change the small, creative community that thrived there, amongst the trees.

whenever lake came to learn about the green monster that goes with attending to school with malibu’s elite, their parents reminded them that they were not one of the designer beach town inhabitants. “don’t try to change topanga,” they would tell them when lake wished it was more like where their friends lived in malibu, “let topanga change you.”

a bottomless well of privilege, however. struggling artists still struggle. your average poet or painter is going to have a tough time scraping together the bread to buy in topanga, a market where median prices are in the millions.

when lake was on the verge of their eleventh birthday, jobs, money, things that eleven year old could never understand, had their family uprooted across the country to the suburbs of pennsylvania.

topanga canyon was like an aging hippie that refused to wash off its natural character, harboring the same famous aesthetic it held in the seventies and before. similarly, lake refused to wash off the parts of malibu and topanga that shaped them, even if it meant standing out in centralia.

and as fate would have it, lake learned that they loved to stand out.

having dreams of driving a motorcycle along the coast of pacific coast highway toward a morning surf gave lake a vision to aspire toward. of course, they had to start with the family car, but they took care of it to prove responsible enough for something of their own . until then their surfboard would be the most important thing lake takes out for a ride.

there was a certain learning curve that came with being the new kid, but lake’s outgoing personality, sense of style, and creativity had them making friends in no time.

most friendships made were lost over time, lake being the type to jump around from friend group to friend group, finding whatever mold fit them best at the time.

while doodling in notebook margins all day, lake daydreamed about working on vintage cars with their dad after school. 

post high school they tried to live and work in philadelphia as an artist, but the city life proved not to be for them.

after a while they made their way back to centralia. it was no california, but it was a closer life to the one they idolized in their mind growing up.

in the evenings and sometimes the late nights into early mornings, lake is painting their colorful mind onto a canvas in hopes of fulfilling the same dream as all those left in topanga canyon: making a sustainable living, perhaps even a luxurious one, from their art.

in the mean time they are simply trying to catch some sleep between art pieces, surf sessions, and working at the garage.

lake is both an empath cry baby and a feminist that takes zero shit, stands up for others, and uses their voice as needed.

the person lake loves most in this world is themself and they has no shame in it, having been raised with the idea that they would fall apart if they ever let self-love slip from their grasps.

they have solid posture that commands a room. when sitting, they are often ‘ man - spreading ’ to practice taking up space rather than make themself small.
