Recent findings that plants employ a drought-survival mechanism to also defend against nutrient-sucking pests could inform future crop breeding programs aimed at achieving better broadscale pest control. Using an advanced fluorescent biosensor (ABACUS2) that can detect tiny changes in plant hormone concentrations at the cellular scale, scientists saw that abscisic acid (ABA), usually linked with drought response, started closing the plant's entry gates within 5 hours of being infested with spider mites. Microscopic leaf pores (stomata) are important for gas exchange but are also the major sites for water loss. When there is a water shortage, plants act to conserve water by producing the drought stress hormone ABA to close their stomata.

i loved spiders as a child because the person who bullied me for many years was a pathological arachnophobe. like he could not make himself go near a spider. so i always knew that the closer i was to spiders, the further i was from harm 🖤

not quite the same vibe‚ but i actually just started working in commercial pest control‚ and i’ve gotten a few comments and questions amounting to “why?”. but first they usually say something like “oh you like killing mice and bugs”. and i respond “no actually‚ i don’t. i love animals‚ all animals‚ even and especially the ones that the majority of the human population seems to hate with vitriol”. the conversation topic gets awkward then‚ and changed. so i don’t get the chance to elaborate: “humans are animals too‚ and i do this job to protect them‚ and keep the places where we make‚ store‚ process‚ and ship our food out clean and sanitary. i love mice and bees and wasps and spiders and rats and pigeons. and this job is more about preventing pest entry in the first place‚ rather than killing them after. and even when it does come to that‚ better that it is done quickly‚ and humanely‚ by someone who understands the gravity of taking even a small life‚ and treats it with the respect it deserves. that’s why i do this job and i don’t appreciate being treated like a degenerate for trying to keep *you personally* from getting preventable diseases‚ and taking this job seriously.” people have such weird hang-ups about death and disease, and then get even weirder when they find someone who doesn’t.

bug biomass load will be filled
Every environment has a "bug biomass load" that load could be a diverse collection of species or it could be all American Roaches. It's up to you!
If you use general poisons you are killing the ants, the isopods, the beetles, the flies, the spiders, the centipedes. Most spray poisons aren't targeted. They have to be extra strong to kill the poison adapted Roach.
Baits are better, not ideal. Even better is environmental management. Eliminating the places and foods that attract the unwanted guests while supporting or being neutral to the wanted ones.
A basement w/ spiders, centipedes & ants will not be as welcome of a place for roaches.

I bet when in the human realm, there was a spider and before Luz or Camila could do anything about it, one of the witchlings grabbed it and ate it and Camila was just sitting there disgusted as Luz tried to explain their "interesting" diets again

friendly nudge to go pick up that laundry pile. you know the one. the one that has been sitting there just a little too long.
one of my bigger fears in life just came true: i left the pile there a little too long and the biggest wild spider i have ever seen had taken up residence in the pile. it ran over my foot. this was hours ago and my soul is only just now returning to my body.
pick up your laundry.

Groups of spiders could be used as an environmentally-friendly way to protect crops against agricultural pests. That's according to new research, led by the University of Portsmouth, which suggests that web-building groups of spiders can eat a devastating pest moth of commercially important crops like tomato and potato worldwide.

Woke up at 5 as usual.
Went to start the kettle for tea.
Saw a spider with a bit of fuzz stuck to one of its legs, so I grabbed a piece of paper to get it off to help the little guy
Get the fuzz off, watch spider take off no longer slowed down by fuzz
See movement from corner of eye and look
It's a roach
Scream and run away, making dogs bark and waking up my husband
Spiders? Fine, lovely little creatures that I adore seeing around the house ourside
Roaches? Nightmare fuel, tiny little motherfuckers my dad used to throw at me as a kid to watch me freak out about them crawling in my hair/clothes
Anyway I'm hiding in the bathroom while my husband deals with thr roach

Say, if you like cats so much, why don't you just get one? Lord Hater has a pet, Dr. Schwarzschild has a pet...
Who? ...Wait, that's Bert.
Anyways pets-- even relatively low maintenance animd like cats-- are a lot of work. And I barely have enough time to take care of myself!
Seriously, how'm I supposed to remember to feed it when I keep forgetting to eat?

Is there anything more unsettling than your four cats staring in the same direction down the hall, only for you to later find a spider on the back of your bedroom door?
"Aww, what are you silly little guys doing over-? GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY, IS THAT A BIG HONKIN' RECLUSE???"
