This is part 5 of my band of brothers icons series. I joined the fandom just after the day the HBO war secret Santa entry date ended, but really wanted to do something special for everyone to celebrate Christmas! 🎄
This one is for @ronsparky as well as @ronald-speirs, you guys have both been so incredibly supportive in my Tumblr journey trough supporting my artwork! I am so happy that there are people out there who I feel genuinely enjoy the things I make :) it inspired me to keep going and keep creating even tho sometimes I feel like giving up.
I had hope you both have an amazing Christmas and go into the new year happy and exited! 💚 Can’t wait to see the things you make next year👀

no one asked for it but here it is!
My ranking on which Band of Brothers characters I think i could beat in a fight:
for context i am 5”4, like 60kg soaking wet, but filled with rage and self belief - my entire fighting ability is based solely on the fact i grew up as the only girl and learnt to fight dirty
Dick Winters: First and foremost. I would NOT fight this man, i feel like it would be like hitting my mum, he just gives me disappointed mum vibes. secondly, i have no doubt that man can fight, and i would be folded like a deck chair - HOWEVER: i feel like he would help me stop the nose bleed i would get from him breaking my nose
Lewis Nixon: I feel like i could beat nix in a fight, just something about him screams like he would not be able to fight in like an anything goes street style fight? maybe it’s the Yale student in him.
Carwood Lipton: Again, i feel like it would be like hitting my dad. Also i know that man would be able to kick the shit out of me. Like we saw his arms in the baseball scene? yeah. no way would i be able to beat that man in a fight
Ronald Spiers: I wouldn’t even attempt to fight that man. He would rock my shit. There is no doubt about it. I may be delusional but i’m not THAT delusional
Harry Welsh: I feel like this one would be pretty easy, and i think i would win. Like he’s a loveable guy yaknow? but also if i had to i would beat him. However, i would probably feel pretty bad about it if im being honest
Joe Liebgott: now, i understand this man is probably like a foot taller than me, and very angry. BUT. i feel like this a a 50/50, in the sense that i feel if i could get him onto my level, it would a fair fight. HOWEVER, i feel this man would fight dirty if need be.
Joe Toye: no way. nuh uh. we’ve all seen his arms, they are bigger than my head, his brass knuckles?! yeah no way would i win that fight.
Bill Guarnere: again, i feel like this is similar to Joe Toye, in the fact that i feel like this man is filled with a lot of rage and would definitely knock me on my ass. Like i would put up a fight and maybe get a few punches in but, he would put me on my ass fs
George Luz: no offence but i would for sure win. Like love George but, if i had to fight him, i would win. But i don’t think i would ever want to fight George, look at that face and tell me you would want to harm it
Skip Muck: look at that face and tell me you would want to hit it. I would however win, i feel like there isn’t much height advantage for him to have, and even if there was i am used to fighting people bigger than me. So in short, yea i would win but i would feel bad about it
Don Malarkey: hasn’t he been through enough!? But seriously though, i think he would probably win based on arm size alone. Like he would crush me with his arms, even if i could fight back.
Frank Perconte: i would win. no doubt in my mind. That’s not saying this man wouldn’t be scrappy, because he gives me scrappy vibes, but i would win this one.
Babe Heffron: My beloved, my special guy, my pookie, i would NEVER. However, i think it would be a pretty 50/50 fight if i was able to get him to my level. That is if my ass wasn’t kicked my Bill first.
Bull Randleman: look at me. look at me. Bull Randleman would rock my shit. I would be folded like a pretzel. He would knock me on my ass, and most definitely brake a bone in my face. Look at him!!!!
Shifty Powers: it would feel like punching a sad little puppy :( i don’t want to fight him! Like i physically don’t think i would even fight him, and i feel he would feel bad if he hit me… maybe we go out for breakfast and don’t fight
David Webster: now i have full faith in my ability to beat this man in a fight. I feel he would be a pretentious harvard man and i would definitely be able to beat him, especially if it’s an anything goes brawl.
Johnny Martin: This man would eradicate me with a single death glare. He is TIRED of everyone’s shit, and i think he would use that to just decimate me off the face of the earth.
Chuck Grant: Now, we’re talking pre head wound chuck, he would probably beat me, PROBABLY. I feel like that man would fight dirty, but there would be a chance for me to win. So maybe like a 70/30 chance his way?
Floyd Talbert: This man would flirt his way to victory. He would make me turn red at the compliments and sweet talking and i just would not be able to fight him. And to be honest, i would let him
Eugene Roe: Again, i would NEVER want to fight this man, he has been through enough!!! But the fact he would be able to throw me like a sack of potatoes would wound my ego severely. Like dude is strong! he’s carrying around injured people all day! Which means he would most definitely win.
Buck Compton: This one’s a tricky one for me to say, i want to say he would win. BUT, i feel like he would fight fair yaknow? So maybe if i caught him off guard and like, bite him maybe i would win? But who knows for sure.
Skinny Sisk: This man has to deal with Web and Lieb. HE IS TIRED!!! I would not fight him based on the fact that he needs a break. Give him a break. BUT i think it would be pretty 50/50, he seems beatable but also seems like he could kick my ass yaknow?

Okay this is spiers/winters anon. In my completely imaginary self-indulgent universe I think that they became very close very fast because, yes, they are the same person on opposite ends of the rationality/self-restraint spectrum (you Get It). And then maybe they for some reason they got the Not Straight Vibes from each other and bonded further over *that* understanding, and then maybe once or twice made out or hooked up just because they could. And then winters met Nixon and spiers met lipton and they turned to their respective long term happily ever afters the end!
Idk I just saw a gif of them walking together and I was like... they should kiss. But only a few times. And as a side note I feel like irl winters is very praising of spiers in his book, second only to Nixon lmao
Thank you for encouraging and entertaining my silly little homosexuality brain :3

speirs/winters anon! my beloved
the more i think about these two (u are giving me. Brain Worms) the more i'm thinking it's Suchhh an interesting duo bc it seems like opposite to winnix/speirton etc speirs and winters would be more about like. survival
like basically through the lens of ep 2 i can really see it because it's like. speirs taking out the machine gun nest and how winters copes/leads a charge and it's Verryyyy interesting to put those two erlenmeyer flasks of explosives together..........
but u are SO right about the Sensing Each Other May Be Queer thing. survival on two fronts: against the enemy and against a section eight. brilliant brilliant brilliant
and if there is ONE thing that we will be it is Crazy. anon thank you truly for these thoughts, they are like a refreshing can of delightful worms on a fresh spring day

EMMAA HIIII ME AGAIN HEHEHE can I request “forehead kisses but it’s the male being kissed on the head” with Spiers please???? Also if you could make reader’s gender vague 🙏🏼🙏🏼 take your time bby!!
HONEY 💓 MY BELOVED HONEY, MY DEAREST 💓 this absolute fricken GEM has been sitting in my inbox far too long!!!
Speirs loooovesss to give you forehead kisses. You're just the right height for him to lean over and plant one on you.
And he does it all the time, so one day you decide to return the favour and see how he reacts.
He's incredibly surprised when you're sitting together and you suddenly lean over and press your lips to his forehead gently.
You watch him carefully, wondering whether his silence means he's annoyed.
But then he smiles the most soft, adorable smile you've ever seen and he looks over at you almost shyly and you know then that he absolutely thinks it's the cutesy thing ever.
So then you make a point to do it as much as possible. And everytime you do it he gets all cute and blushy about it.
He'd never admit that he loves it out loud, but he knows that you know he loves it and you keep doing it so who is he to spoil a good thing?

"THE SANDMAN: DREAMCAST" TEXT VERSION
I liked "The Sandman: Dreamcast" very much, but I understand English by ear not very well, so some words and phrases remained not very clear for me. I was looking for a text version, but didn't find it. After all, I decided to listen more carefully and to make it myself. Maybe it will be useful for someone else who understands by ear not very well too. I'm sorry for possible mistakes, my English is not very good. And I will be grateful to everyone who points out the mistakes and tells how to fix them.
"The Sandman: Dreamcast" is available, for example, here: https://open.spotify.com/show/64o4qcuaf0JOgBegVc430R?si=GiwoeO-3TxO7VUr3mJg43A&utm_source=copy-link
"The gray world of half sleep"
Neil Gaiman:
Hello. My name is Neil. I want to welcome you to "The Sandman: Dreamcast".
Some of you may know the story of "The Sandman" well. And some of you might be wandered here. On a whim. Out of curiosity or, perhaps, intuition. However it is that you've come to be here, now there you are welcome.
Before we can enter the realm of The Dreaming, you must first get comfortable. Even cosy, perhaps. So, if you haven't already, make your way into a relaxing position. With a favourite pillow. Or a blanket. With a cup of tea. Or a beloved pet.
Now. Close your eyes. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Feel your breath slowing. Feel yourself entering the gray world of half sleep. In a theater of your mind observe where you are.
We are in darkness. Infinite. Absolute. Here, in this darkness, we are at the very fringes of Dream Country. In ever-changing landscape there are fragments of thoughts and imaginings, dots and drift. If you reach out your hand you might even be able to catch one.
This is the very beginning of The Dreaming.
But to enter this realm we need a guide. And there is only one being wit to the task.
Dream. Lord Morfeus.
He's here, with us, now. To stay ahead. Do you see him? That tall dark figure? Notice his jet black hair. His alabaster skin. And his long black robe. If you look closely, you might see flames flickering at the hem. See how his eyes burn and shine - eyes like distant stars.
He's waiting for you. For us. Always. Let us go to him now.
"Enter The Dreaming"
Dream:
You know me. We have met before.
I have many names. I am the King of dreams. And nightmares. I am Morfeus. Dream of The Endless.
When The Waking world leaves you wanting and weary, sleep brings you here. To me. To my realm. I will guide you into The Dreaming. Follow me.
The Dreaming is as much a part of me, as I am of it. You too are connected to this place. I move through your dreams each and every night. I am always beside you.
Breathe...
Your natural rhythm is part of the rhythm of the entire universe. All worlds. All realms.
Let us journey deeper. I reach into my pouch and feel the golden grain. Sand. I shift it through my fingers. I touch each and every grain of it. Inexhaustible. Endless. I cast the sand into the air. Feel it whip and swell around you now. We are moving.
Do you see the gates of horn and ivory before you? I craft them myself many eons ago. The dreams passed through the gates of ivory are lies. The other gate admits the truth. No one gets the horned gate anymore.
Once through it you see my castle. The turrets. The spiers. The arches. All of this destroyed by my absence. All rebuild again with the aid of my sand, my helm and my ruby.
It is here that I take my leave of you. To face your fantasies. And your fears.
You are in good hands with Lucienne.
"A visit to The Library"
Lucienne:
When fears and fantasies take shape, they become stories. I would know. I am the librarian here, in The Dreaming.
I would be happy to take you on a tour of The Palace. And its servivents. Or, perhaps... would you like to see my Library?
Excellent.
This way.
You've come at an interesting time.
I kept to journal while Lord Morfeus was away. A chronicle of everything that happend. Eventually all the books in The Library became bound volumes of blank paper.
But I never felt abandoned. I knew: he would return.
When he did The Library was restored!
The Library of Dream is the largest library than ever was. Each volume you see is very special. Every book has ever been dreamed. Every book that's ever been imagined. Every book that's ever been lost.
I can remember the title, offer and location of every book in this Library.
Even you have stories here. Look. Here is one. Do you remember?
Now, when Lord Morfeus has returned, I have been charged with conducting a census. I'm journing fast to the heights of Cain and Abel - of the first story. Will you join me?
"The first story"
Abel:
Oh! Hello. Enjoying your time with us in The Dreaming, I hope?
I'm Abel. Pleasure to meet you! And this is my friend. Goldie. He's a gargoyle.
Cain:
Ah, greetings!
Abel:
This is my brother. His name is Cain.
Cain:
Please, make yourself comfortable.
Abel:
It's really nice by the fire.
Cain:
Of course it is, powder brain, it's exceedingly cozy!
Abel:
Here is your tea. Just the way you like it.
You can take your shoes off, if that's more comfortable for you.
Cain:
Take away! Absolutely not this is in the burnyard.
Abel:
Goldie sure is tired. Can he sit on your lap, friend?
He's a very good gargoyle! Just the right amount of catly.
Cain:
Now that everyone appears to be settled, we can tell you the first story.
Ours story begins...
Abel:
Oh! Are friend here already knows who we are?
You look smart. Even sleeping.
Cain:
Yes, yes, I can see well, well!
Well, I was a farmer.
Abel:
And I was a shepherd.
Cain:
We were competitive, as all brothers can be.
Abel:
I don't think most brothers are like you at all.
Cain:
You... you are ruining the story!
Abel:
It's really coming down out there!
Cain:
Oh! I'll brew another pot of tea.
Eh! It's a boring story anyway, tolded at thousand times.
Abel:
Don't mind him. You stay in dream as long as you like.
"In your heart"
Desire:
Why, hello there.
Surprised to see me? You shouldn't be.
I can feel you are still searching for something. Even here, in my big brother's realm.
I suppose, I should introduse myself.
I am Desire. It is what I am. It is what I do. I make you want. It's me there you feel - in the longing; in the lust.
You were drawn to what was objects of your desire like a butterfly to a candle's flame.
You already knew all of that, didn't you?
So tell me then. What is it you want? Don't be shy.
Or, perhaps, I should try to guess?
You want something sensual. Or maybe something precious? Oh? Maybe someone special?
Or maybe you want all tree. Yes. I think that might just be the case.
You know, my big brother thinks The Endless are servants to you, mortals.
But I know what you really are.
You're a creature of desire. My creature.
And you twist and bend as I reqire it.
Whenever you wake, my big brother will take his leave of you.
But I won't.
I'm always with you. Right there. In your heart.

Chuck Grant × Fem!Reader
I've had this idea swimming around in my head for a while, so I decided to finally get back into the swing of writing
⚠️I in no way own Band of Brothers or anyone/anything associated with the series. This is a work of fiction based off the actor portrayal of the real-life heroes⚠️
Like + reblog <3
Tumblr media
Staff Sergeants Chuck Grant and Y/N Y/L/N were the typical you never saw one without the other. The two had been attached at the hip ever since Toccoa, first as friends, then as lovers.
The confession first came from Chuck, after Operation Pegasus. He was tipsy after a successful mission, his fellow sergeant could say the same about herself. She was practically covered head to toe in dirt, her hair was tied back and her breath smelt of cheap beer. But yet, Easy Company were not taken aback when they finally paid mind to the two and saw them engaged in a tight embrace, their lips locked together in a sweet but desperate kiss.
The two were promised to each other ever since.
Sergeants Grant and Y/L/N had a fruitful future ahead of them. They survived Captain Sobel, the war, and were able to celebrate V-E Day alongside the rest of Easy. Now, the only thing that was stopping the two from going back to America and getting a move on with their lives was the Japanese.
Y/N and Chuck each had a one way ticket to the raging war in the Pacific.
The wait in Germany was refreshing, though. Giving the two copious amounts of alone time, away from their beloved friends.
George Luz and Joe Liebgott found joy in making the bet: will Y/N get knocked up in the foreign land of Hitler's fallen empire?
The days seemed to pass at an agonizing pace. Everyone was itching to be shipped home or back to war. The homesickness was becoming almost unbearable, especially after watching Shifty Powers get the luxury of being sent back to America before the rest of them.
And yet, Y/N and Chuck seemed to make the most of their predicament. They would walk through the town that was previously occupied by high ranking Nazis, Chuck would gather a small bouquet of wild flowers and surprise his girl, and of course, an excessive amount of alcohol was consumed during the late hours. Y/N took a ride with Liebgott, Webster and Sisk that ultimately ended with the death of a high ranking SS. And to top it all off, Chuck was able to convince Winters to give him a military jeep for a night out of town.
Y/N decided it best to stay back and get a good nights rest, allowing him to have some time with his friends.
-
A loud banging on the bedroom door woke Y/N up from her deep slumber. The bedroom she occupied was lavish and comfortable, something she had never experienced in her 20 some years of life.
Upon throwing on her uniform decently enough to cover her skin, Y/N pulled open the door to reveal a quite shaken up Ronald Speirs.
"Sir-" she stood at attention for her superior despite her fatigued state.
"Y/N, you need to come with me." Spiers' tone was one Y/N had never heard from his mouth before. Panic. There was a pause of silence while the girl tried to collect her thoughts; "it's Chuck."
Her head was spinning now. Chuck? What could have possibly happened to Chuck? The war in Europe was over. They were at peace with the Germans. There weren't anymore bullets flying, or so Y/N thought.
"What happened? Where is he?" Y/N pushed past Spiers and headed towards the front door of the building she occupied. Spiers followed close behind; "is he alright?"
"There was an accident." Spiers was leading Y/N to where the German brain surgeon was operating on Grant; "Chuck, he was shot."
Y/N's eyes stung with tears. She blinked, and when the wetness covered her cheeks, she harshly ran her hands over her face.
"By who?" Spiers and Y/N were now walking side by side. He stopped on the street corner, an army jeep parked and waiting.
"I don't know. Not a Nazi."
"A fucking American?" Y/N's panic was now clouded by furious rage; "who? What's his name?" The two got into the jeep, speeding down the street.
"I don't know, Y/N." Spiers couldn't look at the girl. He couldn't stand to witness the distress she was in. They were never the closest of friends, but despite this, he cared for her.
The rest of the jeep ride was silent. Y/N couldn't say how much time had passed. Minutes? An hour? Either way, when her eyes finally landed on Chuck, her heart broke inside her chest. He was still, laid up on a dirty cot with bandages wrapped around his head. The German doctor was friendly, Chuck's friends had gone out to find the drunken assailant, and Spiers stood in the corner with his hands shoved deep into his pockets.
Y/N knelt down beside Chuck.
"Charles?" His real name rarely ever slipped from her lips; "honey? It's me. Can you hear me?"
Chuck was silent.
"Oh, honey. What happened to you?" The tears formed back into her eyes, her hand placed gently on his in fear she might cause more damage to him; "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I wasn't there to help you, to protect you. God, I'm so sorry."
Y/N was sobbing now.
"He will live." The German doctor cut the tension that enveloped the room. Y/N looked him in the eye. She gave a curt nod as a thank you.
Y/N turned back to Chuck, mumbling and rambling all sorts of apologies and prayers for him to wake up. She didn't hear the heavy door creak open, revealing Richard Winters and Lewis Nixon standing side by side. Spiers could easily read the look in their eyes: they found him.
"Y/N." Winters spoke her name with the utmost care. She slowly turned to look at him; "do you want to see him?"
Him. Y/N wiped the moisture from her face. She placed a tender kiss to Chuck's left cheek before standing up straight.
"Yes, sir. I would."
-
The news of Chuck's injury traveled fast within Easy Company. The assailant was a fellow paratrooper. A member of the Airborne. He was someone who was to be trusted, and yet, he shot one of his own. For this reason alone, he was showed no mercy when the men of Easy got their hands on him.
When Y/N strutted into the hotel of which her Company was occupying, she came face to face with Floyd Talbert and George Luz. They stood, both in surprise and to ask various types of questions. George possessed a cigarette between his lips.
"How is he?" George spoke first.
"Where is he?" Y/N reached down to her side, unclipped her holster and wrapped her dirt coated fingers around the handle of her revolver.
"How's Grant?" Floyd reached a hand out to grab her, to console her.
"Where is he!?" Y/N's voice echoed off the walls.
A moment of silence.
"In there." George gestured towards the small room on Y/N's left side; "the guys have already given him a good beating."
Y/N stood quiet, weighing her options. She was furious, she could feel it in every ounce of her body and soul. She wanted him dead. And she wanted to be the one who pulled the trigger.
She turned to Luz, reached a hand out and plucked the cigarette from his mouth.
"Thanks."
The cigarette was placed between her fingers. Y/N walked towards the room, now. Greeting her at the doorway was Bull Randleman. Frank Perconte had the man by the hair, tugging his head back. His eye was swollen shut, and black and blue. He was bleeding from his nose and lips, a flow of red cascading down onto his uniform.
"This is him?" Y/N asked. All she saw when she stood in front of the seated man was a piece of scum. A piece of scum who shot her boyfriend. He coughed violently.
"That's him." Bull stood behind her protectively; "replacement. I Company"
Y/N's blood was boiling. Her attention flickered to the cigarette between her fingers, switching its position so she could taste the toxic fumes on her tongue.
"Where's the weapon?" She asked, smoke spilling from her lips.
"What weapon?" The replacement gave a smug grin. He didn't feel threatened in the presence of the girl. Though, everyone in Easy had seen what little compassion she possesses when she gets her hands on an enemy.
Y/N took one last drag of the half burned cigarette. She deliberately blew the smoke into the replacements face before placing the burning embers onto his dry and cracked cheek. There was a slight sizzling sound of the replacements burning skin. He gritted his teeth to not make a sound of pain.
"When you speak to a lady, you call her ma'am."
She dropped the butt of the cigarette onto the hard ground and stomped on it with her heel.
Circling Y/N and the replacement, some of the men of Easy averted their gaze towards the ground. Everyone knew what the feisty young woman was capable of. Johnny Martin kept a strong stare on the girl’s hands, watching her grab her revolver and pull the hammer back. Joe Liebgott flinched at the sound.
Y/N aimed the barrel of the revolver between the replacements eyes. She appeared calm, too calm considering the circumstances. Perconte’s eyes grew wide as he took a step away from the replacement, his arms crossed over his chest. If she were to pull the trigger, he didn’t want to leave with the assailants brains on his uniform. Johnny moved backwards, now standing directly behind Y/N and beside Bull.
The replacement inhaled and exhaled heavily, the end of his life now becoming a very real possibility to him. It didn’t take him long to realize this was revenge for the shooting of Staff Sergeant Charles Grant.
Y/N’s hand was shaking now. Her eyes brimmed with tears, blurring the man in front of her.
“You shot him,” she started; “you shot my Chuck.”
Bull and Johnny felt compelled to stop Y/N, to grab her arm and tell her it isn’t worth the bullet, isn’t worth losing her rank in the military. But they knew it was. It was worth it to her, and it was worth it to them.
One of the first friends Y/N had made at Toccoa, Don Malarkey, closed his eyes in anticipation for the loud bang of her gun.
It never came.
Y/N placed the cool metal of her gun against the replacements forehead, gave it a harsh shove, then pulled away. Liebgott, who was standing beside her, exhaled the deep breath he had been holding.
The replacement gave a chilling chuckle at her actions.
“You’re lucky.” Y/N returned her revolver to its holster. She leaned down, a whispery tone escaping her mouth this time; “you’re lucky. I should have blown your brains out like you almost did to my Chuck.” Y/N stood up straight and kicked the front leg of the chair the replacement was seated on, tossing him around for a brief moment.
She didn’t notice she was sweating until she ran a hand through her messy hair, her palm touching her slick forehead.
“Have the MPs take care of this piece of shit.” She demanded.
Y/N took one last look at the man who shot Chuck Grant. In her eyes, he was nothing but a coward. Y/N’s feet swiftly removed her from the room, walking past all the pairs of eyes who didn’t think any less of her for not shooting the man. In fact, they admired her for coming face to face with the man who attempted to kill the love of her life.
“Grant’s dead?” Floyd Talbert bravely asked.
Y/N turned to face her friend.
“No. Kraut surgeon said he’s gonna make it. He’ll survive.” There was a silence in the room. Everyone could tell she had more to say; “guess we have to wait and see what the long term damages will be.”
“You should be there when he wakes up.” Liebgott said in a soft tone, one that was rare from him.
Y/N nodded, turned, and left the room.
“Alright, tough guy. On your feet.” Was the last thing Y/N heard before she burst into tears. Spiers was waiting outside the building for her.
She wished she pulled the trigger. She wished she wasn’t worried about the consequences. But, at the end of the day, Chuck Grant was alive. He was breathing.
Not even a bullet to the head could take him away from his beloved, Y/N.

Well, this is complicated. From this book I've gained a guarded distrust for more recently written military history books. I love studying the boots-on-the-ground history of modern military engagements from WW1 through the War in Iraq, post 9/11. I'm not so into the politics as I am interested in the stories of brotherhood and courage so starkly displayed on the battlefield. This book, freshly written and published during the so called pandemic has a subtle stinky whiff of wokism. When I was in college, we were taught in our history class not to judge the men and women of the past by our current cultural morality. We were taught that wasn't fair and wasn't how you studied history.
What do they teach them at these schools?
The woke-ish fumes weren't so toxic as to drive me to toss this book away—I added it to my Band of Brothers shelf—but it was enough to make me rant and sputter.
I get that they were trying to deal with a man who's surrounded by whispered tales of executing prisoners and even one of his own men. But to deal with it in a 'we know how evil that is because we're so much more civilized' Monday-morning-quarterback, armchair historian, voice was so annoying. No one with any sense of war is really going to be super bothered by this, his men, and commander's weren't, and Spiers himself critiqued his own actions so as to become a better commander. This was war. It's not pretty. It's not clear. And we shouldn't run around just judging people like we'd do so much better.
Again, it was subtle, but there in their adjective choice and their questions. It showed a sense of whining justification, instead of a manly, "this is war, suck it up, buttercup." It felt like a girl whining because she didn't want to get sweaty. If you play, you're going to get hurt.
They also seemed constantly astounded that a man could be hard and cold facing the enemy but be concerned about his men's safety. For me, there will never be an incomprehensible dichotomy between being an effective combat leader, a "killer", and being gravely concerned for the wellbeing of your men, loving your men. I mean you're writing a Band of Brothers book, what even? This is what we love about them! Why is this so hard to explain? It's not shocking it's beautiful. It's a wonderful dichotomy, not incomprehensible. It's what those of us not so interested in the big picture but the boots on the ground stories are searching for.
They just constantly tried to philosophize and psychologize their way through this instead of just telling the story. Spiers fought in 3 wars and possibly engaged in black ops operations. By all accounts he was a wonderful husband and grandfather in his old age. I cried through much of the whole last chapter which shared a bunch of correspondence between Winters and Spiers.
I'm thankful for a book about Spiers. I'm thankful to learn more details of his life. I just don't find him to be that mysterious or dark or incomprehensible. From what I've read about combat, he's not much different from many other men making snap decisions, while being lost, while being shot at, while being responsible for the lives of his friends. In fact, what sets him apart is what a great man he was to follow. Almost as beloved as Winters. I get that he was private about his war experiences. Based upon what he might have been involved in and the generation he was part of, that's not shocking or beffudling. The majority of his men loved him. Winters and Compton respected him. That's enough for me.

curlew may be servants of the mariner in spier but i love them so very much and simply must share some curlew information!
Tumblr media
this is the eurasian curlew! there are nine species in the curlew genus, Numenius, but this is Numenius arquata. they're the largest wading bird we have here in the uk!! there are about 66,000 breeding pairs in the uk, and have been insane losses, the population has dropped 80% in wales since 1995. they lay their eggs on the ground, in nests called scrapes, but changes in agricultural management have left vulnerable to predation, and issues with raising eggs to maturity is part of the causes of their decline, along with climate change in general and more specific issues around how marshland in particular are being managed. they're a bioindicator species, so they show the general health of the environments they inhabit!!
Tumblr media
look at this guy. the leggies,,
females have longer and more curved beaks!! and babies have lil short beaks,,
Tumblr media
i suggest checking out the charity curlew action for more info!! curlews my beloved!!

Outsider POV fic: Spiers coming to easy and realizing that half of the company is queer but trying to hide it from him for fear that he is gonna kill them or something (if he were to low-key come out to put them at ease I would consider naming my firstborn after you) I love you and you work ❤️❤️

A/N: Lmao what a prompt! This speaks to my silly side. Thank you for the prompt and reading my stuff. <3

On the contrary to popular belief, Ron Speirs had excellent social skills. He wasn’t exactly what you’d call friendly, but he was quick to figure other people out and often used this to his advantage, and this was exactly what worried certain soldiers of Easy when he took command.
Sure, he was competent and they were glad to have him – professionally speaking. But as soon as he took command, he started evaluating his new subordinates with sharp, all-seeing eyes, and the experience was unnerving to say the least. There was no telling what he might do.
Harry just couldn’t make his mind about Speirs. He didn’t dislike him, he didn’t like him, and nothing in between fit either, solely because he couldn’t get a grasp of the man. He wasn’t the rule-abiding kind like Winters, but somehow managed to be less fun, and he was temperamental but not up to a play fight or a rousing conversation. Most often his face was blank, a cold mask that Harry couldn’t read, and sometimes he broke into a grin that somehow didn’t help the matter.
Most importantly, Harry couldn’t decide if the man was to be trusted or not. Harry was the kind who would take a bullet for his friends and take their secrets to the grave, but as much as Speirs was now a part of their group, Harry couldn’t tell if he would follow his lead on that one.
The thing was, Harry wasn’t sure if Nix and Dick knew that he knew. They certainly hadn’t talked about it, but there was a relaxed energy between the three of them, and Harry could sense an unspoken agreement they had all somehow formed. He didn’t make comments or tease them about women, and Nix and Dick sat very close to each other, sometimes with their arms resting on a backrest of a couch or a chair behind the other’s back, and all was well.
When Speirs joined them, Harry had to put a stop to that. He wasn’t sure if his friends were as careful as he felt they should be, and they certainly couldn’t talk about it either, so Harry found himself feigning off many close calls by jamming himself between Nix and Dick and loudly interrupting their word games when they threatened to take a flirtatious tone. Nix and Dick both gave him weird looks about it, but again, unspoken agreement, and Harry was busy staring Speirs down to really pay attention.
I dare you to try and hurt them, Harry said with his stare, but all he got back was one of those blank stares.
The legacy of Bill Guarnere lived on, and even if Martin approved of Speirs as their new commander and respected him as a combat leader, he couldn’t ignore the stories about him killing one of his own. Martin wasn’t so gullible as to believe every piece of gossip that came his way, but this one was just plausible enough to be a reason for concern.
“Take care of Babe for me, will ya?” had been one of the last things Guarnere had said to him before he was evacuated for good. “Keep him out of trouble he can’t handle.”
In Martin’s opinion Bill babied his best buddy way too much, but he had to admit that Speirs was trouble barely anyone could handle, let alone a chipper red-headed Philly boy who talked way too much and wore his heart on his sleeve.
Martin didn’t know what to do about it. His position didn’t hold much influence and he couldn’t exactly keep the sharp gaze of their new C.O. off one of the loudest soldiers of the company, but he could put himself between them. He tried to think what Bill had always done when Babe threatened to take things too far or give himself away with his sputtering and bright blush, but all he came up were things that were way too Guarnere for him. So what Martin was left with was his own stare and herding anyone who might be Babe’s type away from him.
After only a few weeks Martin knew he had failed. Speirs’ eyes followed Babe far too long, and Martin just knew that he had figured him out. All he could do at that point was to cross his arms and meet the captain’s stare head on, trying to communicate that to get to the beloved charge of his friend, anyone would have to go through him first. Speirs just looked back.
After getting divorced Lipton had been strangely composed. Luz had always imagined that being abandoned like that would be an experience that stopped the world on its tracks and shattered a person, or at least hurt them for a long time.
Lipton however had shrugged it off rather easily, but Luz wrote it off as a strange form of combat stress. The man had seemed almost relieved in some way, and then entered something of a workaholic phase. When Lipton recovered from pneumonia, his mother-henning found an entirely new gear as if he was trying to make up for the few weeks he had been down.
Luz was good with people. He loved people, and in his opinion the best thing in the army was that he got to meet all sorts of people he wouldn’t have otherwise ever crossed paths with, and Lipton was certainly one of those he was grateful for. The man had a strange streak to him, Luz had realized when they had become close, something private and hidden that only showed itself briefly in twilight hours, and his divorce had amplified that. Luz didn’t have the energy to judge, doubted he even wanted to, but rather thought it interesting. The army really called all sorts.
But his dear mother hen of a friend didn’t look after himself much, and Speirs was the fox that had sneaked into the henhouse.
What Luz had feared the most was that someone unkind would find out about Lipton, but that had already happened. He could tell it from Speirs’ keen, cold eyes that inspected Lipton, following him around, and Luz was discovering whole new depths of fear. What would happen now? Military police? But there was no proof. Some sort of a vigilante punishment? Would Speirs do that? He might. There was no telling what he could do.
Luz found himself staring at Speirs filled with anxiety. He didn’t know what to do, how he could help his friend or how to even warn him. Luz tried to figure out some sort of a battleplan, but all he could do was frown and stare and frown some more.
One day when Easy was loading the trucks and preparing to get on the road again, Speirs looked back. Luz jumped at the sudden eye contact but held it. Speirs’ eyes were stern and cold, and Luz couldn’t begin to tell what he was thinking.
To his surprise, Speirs seemed to sigh to himself and rolled his eyes. Luz hadn’t recovered from his confusion when Speirs turned away and gestured to someone in the crowd, and Luz found out who when Lipton jogged to him like responding to his beckoning gesture was the best thing he did today.
Speirs patted the pockets of his jacket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, put one between his lips and said something to Lipton that Luz couldn’t hear. Lipton started to go through his own pockets, and after a moment fished out a lighter from the pocket of his trousers, then leaned in to give Speirs light.
The cigarette bounced between Speirs’ lips and forced Lipton to concentrate harder as the flame wouldn’t take. Without realizing it, Lipton leaned in closer, angling his body towards Speirs and bringing his hands closer to his face.
Speirs waited while obviously teasing, then leaned closer himself and suddenly took a hold of Lipton’s hand to steady it. He let the flame kiss the tip of his cigarette far longer than was necessary, his eyes looking at Lipton instead of their hands, and Lipton looked back, a smile rising to his face.
The moment took place right there in broad daylight in the middle of the entire company, and then it ended. Speirs let go of Lipton’s hand, Lipton took a step back, and the men regarded each other from a decent distance again.
Then someone called Lipton, he jolted awake from what had entranced him, and he threw one last look at Speirs before hurrying off. Speirs took a long inhale from his cigarette, truly savoured it, then suddenly looked back at Luz who had stared at the exchange as if hypnotized.
Speirs’ eyes were still cold, but now Luz detected something almost bored in them. Speirs lifted the cigarette to his lips again, quirked a brow and shrugged at Luz as if saying make of that what you will.
Luz did. He sighed in relief.

My Quarantine Watchlist
hello! i hope this post finds you in good health. today i decided to go a little out of my category of what i usually post and make a movie watchlist. if you haven’t seen what i usually repost, i’m a huge movie buff, and are always adding new films to my watchlist. (you should add me on letterboxd! same username.) so, i compiled a list of my top 10 movies. some of them aren’t considered to be critically acclaimed, but they are still comforting and happy, especially during this rough time we are having. i hope you give these a try, and let me know what you think! disclaimer: i am not a movie expert! some terminology i use is definitely not correct lol.
1. rocketman - dir. dexter fletcher, 89%
this movie really means so much to me, it’s definitely one of my absolute favorites. taron egerton does an absolutely amazing job as elton john, not just through his performance but his through his singing. yes, he sings the music as well! the music is also perfectly placed throughout the movie to tell the story of elton john’s life.
synopsis: pretty self explanatory; a musical fantasy about the life of elton john.
2. onward - dir. dan scanlon - 87%
really awesome pixar movie! definitely a great movie for anyone who is a fan of animation, some of the most beautifully animated scenes i have ever seen! i guess that’s just pixar for you.
synopsis: a teenage elf ian lightfoot and his brother barley are given a spell to bring their late father back to life, but when they mess up the first time, they have to go on a quest to find a phoenix gem to bring him back.
3. eddie the eagle - dir. dexter fletcher - 82%
another masterpiece by the dexter fletcher and taron egerton! this is my favorite movie of all time. it’s so heartwarming and motivating, it’s a great pick-me-up film for when i’m feeling down. taron egerton is definitely a chameleon actor, and can slip into any role with ease! him and hugh jackman have such great chemistry, and this movie easily displays that.
synopsis: based on a true story, olympics-bound eddie edwards trains for the winter olympics as a ski jumper, one of the most dangerous sports in the world, with help from his drunken “coach,” bronson peary.
4. lady bird - dir. greta gerwig - 99%
ugh. this movie. i can’t! when i first watched it it left me speechless. it’s an outstanding coming-of-age film, and a great mother-daughter film as well. christine and her mom’s relationship is hilariously heartwarming. another touch i love is the grainy filter throughout the movie. it was a great touch to add an early 2000′s feel! saoirse ronan’s performance was extraordinary. everything about this movie is 10/10, and i cannot recommend this movie enough, especially to teenagers heading off the college.
synopsis: marion mcpherson, a nurse, works tirelessly to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job. she also maintains a turbulent bond with a teenage daughter who is just like her: loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated.
5. love, simon - greg berlanti - 92%
love, simon is a perfectly made film to demonstrate the experience of coming out as a gay teen. it’s funny and witty, with some heart-warming yet heart-wrenching drama. i can’t explain it, but this movie makes me feel things i didn’t think i could feel. nick robinson is a great actor, and this movie got paid dust!! by everyone!!
synopsis: everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-year-old simon spier, it’s a little more complicated. he hasn’t told his family or friends he’s gay, and he doesn’t know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he’s fallen for online. resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying, and life-changing.
6. jojo rabbit - dir. taika watiti - 80%
when i first saw this movie in the theater, i wasn’t sure if i was going to like it. i’m not a fan of war movies and violence, so i was a little uneasy. turns out this could possibly be one of the best movies of 2019! roman griffin davis is the best child actor i’ve ever seen. this movie is a wonderful depiction of anti-hate, and of what life was like for germany during world war II. it shows in a funny way how silly nazi views are. it creates humor over such a sensitive subject, yet you don’t feel bad for laughing!
synopsis: a world war II satire that follows a lonely german boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young jewish girl in their attic. aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, adolf hitler, jojo must confront his blind nationalism.
7. little women - dir. greta gerwig - 95%
greta gerwig strikes again! she literally has never made a bad movie. this movie is based off of the famous novel little women. it has a star studded cast of timothee chalament, saoirse ronan, florence pugh, emma watson, and laura dern. the power of women!!
synopsis: in the years after the civil war, jo march lives in new york and makes her living as a writer, while her sister amy studies painting in paris. amy has a chance encounter with theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to jo but was ultimately rejected. their oldest sibling, meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.
8. the greatest showman - dir. michael gracey - 56%
my favorite original musical movie. hugh jackman is such an amazing singer and actor! this movie was one of the first movies that really turned me into a true film admirer. the music has some of the most beautifully written lyrics i know, and it’s a great family movie! it’s intense, yet happy, yet sad, yet exciting, yet every single emotion one person could feel.
synopsis: growing up in the early 1800s, p.t. barnum displays a natural talent for publicly and promotion, selling lottery tickets by age 12. after trying his hands at various jobs, p.t. turns to show business to indulge his limitless imagination, rising form nothing to create the barnum & bailey circus.
9. bohemian rhapsody - dir. bryan singer - 60%
although it may have it’s inaccuracies here and there, this movie is still heartwarming and conveys a heartwarming message and moral. rami malek performs as freddie mercury wonderfully, and the chemistry between the cast is indescribable. and what takes the cake? the live-aid re-enactment at the end of the movie, with the band’s mannerisms and everything recreated to the t.
synopsis: freddie mercury - lead singer of queen - defies stereotypes and convention to become one of history’s most beloved entertainers. the band’s revolutionary sound and popular songs lead to queen’s meteoric rise in the 1970s. after leaving the group to pursue a solo career, mercury reunites with queen for the benefit concert live aid - resulting in one of the greatest performances in rock ‘n’ roll history.
10. anchorman - dir. adam mckay - 66%
my favorite comedy of all time. will ferrell, steve carrell, and paul rudd are all my favorite comedians, so this movie speaks to me. it’s hilariously stupid, but i still love it and recommend it to everyone i know.
synopsis: hotshot television anchorman ron burgandy welcomes upstart reporter veronica corningstone into the male-dominated world of 1970s broadcast news - that is, until the talented female journalist begins to outshine burgandy on air.
