today on splatoon mythbusters: is Agent 4 a country bumpkin?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no lol this is probably the funniest widespread misconception to come out in recent years A big part of it is because people misunderstood this map.
Tumblr media
I came across this trivia point on the wiki page for agent 4 while making this post LOL agent 4 has better access to public transportation than 95% of you With all that green on the map and nothing marked in between, It seems that people have been assuming the population density of inkopolis looks something like the image on the left. While it's unclear exactly how big the population is of inkadia and the surrounding area is, going roughly off of how irl east Tokyo and neighboring Chiba prefecture look, i think its safe to guess were dealing with an urban area that looks more like whats on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(side note about population count: i take the account of the Low Water Party with a grain of salt since that isnt even a real number they used. something that is more reliable is that graffiti artist Sally has over 240k followers on social media. while followers can be from anywhere in the world ofc, it sounds like her fanbase is largely in inkopolis. i think its safe to say inkopolis is a very big city!)
If we're to look more at the irl equivalent of the area, it seems the Inkopolis Coastal Connector is based on the Keiyo Line. Following that line roughly to where 4's house is lands us in a ward in Chiba city. It doesn't look like much, but about 100k people live in that area. Not a super crazy urban area like tokyo, but still urban.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(incidentally, a major landmark on the Keiyo line is Makuhari Messe, where 3 of the irl splatoon idol concerts have been held. maybe a coincidence but maybe gives more credence to the idea that that's what the coastal connector is based on?) Apparently on the Japanese side, there's a theory that 4 is from Yotsukaido, which is a little further north of the area i circled. why there? Yotsukaido means "4 town street"...4...haha
Tumblr media
Ok enough guessing based on "vibes" and real maps that may or may not be accurate to how things are in the splatoon world. The Actual lore: On Splatoon base it's confirmed they grew up about 40 minutes away from Inkopolis by train, close to the city. That's like a nothing amount of distance.
Tumblr media
Another developer interview from 2017 goes into more detail.
Inoue: Agent 3 had a very "I've finally made it to the city" feeling, with a strong desire to become fresh. 4 on the other hand, not so much. Rather than being someone from the countryside, they're more like someone who came from a commuter town within the greater metropolitan area. It's like a place where the limited express trains wouldn't stop at, but the semi-express trains would (laughs).
so agent 4 is very clearly, a city kid. agent 3 is the country bumpkin, from an area so far away its not even on the map. According to splatoon base...
Tumblr media
Far enough away that they moved to inkopolis alone. meanwhile 4 lives close enough that they could just go home to their parents after battling.
Also this is something that I never see brought up. Amidst the dubiously canon early concept comics in the back of the artbook, there's a comic about agent 3 leaving their hometown, mentioning they live in a seaside town called [REDACTED] with a population of 5000.
Tumblr media
Again, these comics are dubious since theyre so old. but there are ideas in these comics that have carried over to the final games in some form, and this is consistent with agent 3's final characterization that they come from a far away small town and had a longing for the city.
anyway tldr i think its funny how agent 4's fandom characterization/backstory got swapped with 3's all because of a misread map

Something I’m working on based on the Splatoon 2 relationship chart. Both Judd and Lil’ Judd think Crusty Sean looks… tasty?
Sorry I smoothed out Lil’ Judd and now he looks cursed. I was lazy :( This is only a WIP though :3
The song used is Kero ⑨ Destiny by SilverForest. The captions are not actual translations.
Spoilers for Splatoon 3 and my theory for Splatoon 4 below!
Since completing Splatoon 3’s story mode, I’ve come to think Lil’ Judd is super suspicious. Not only does he consider sentient marine life to be “yummy”, he also plots to kill Judd as “prey”.
I think there’s a bit of a chance that Lil’ Judd will be the next main antagonist. Notice how in Splatoon 3, his fur is brown and is much fuzzier than in Splatoon 2. I have a theory that Lil’ Judd’s connection to Mr. Grizz led to him coming into contact with fuzzy ooze. As the ooze was made using Alterna crystals and Mr. Grizz’s fur, it could have caused Lil’ Judd’s fur to change to match Mr. Grizz more closely.
I wonder what other people’s predictions are? Will a previous character return? A twist villain? Or will it end up being a completely new character? I’m excited to see if the next Splatoon will be revealed soon.

HI HELLO! Welcome to my completely unnecessarily detailed analysis on how I think Inkfish languages could work! + with art! yay! This is all pretty rough and not fully fleshed out (I don't have the time or patience for that lmao). THIS IS A LONG POST.
Okay, so there's dozens of languages spoken by cephalopods in the Mollusc Era but the main two I'll talk about are Inkling (or Inklish) and Octarian, spoken mostly by Inklings and Octolings respectively.
Tumblr media
In cephalopods, speech is formed using the syrinx and larynx, two fancy vocal organs that most other species don't have together. The larynx makes sounds using the radula (tongue) and vocal folds in the throat, it's clear and pretty easy to understand as the sound itself resembles human speech, albeit warbled. The syrinx makes noise by vibrating air at the base of the trachea, it's often trickier to follow as it can sound more like droning background noise than words sometimes.
An inkfish can use both of them at once, resulting in an EXTREMELY complicated language system where words can be made up of multiple layered syllables, and several words and sentences can even be said at the same time.
As you can probably imagine, all of this is LITERAL HELL to learn for species who don’t have both a syrinx and a larynx (so basically anyone who isn't a cephalopod). But fear not! There are many simple and more inclusive alternatives, dialects and other cool stuff like sign language and instant TTS technology for people who physically can't pronounce Inkling/Octarian or even vocalise at all (eg. jellyfish).
Tumblr media
Both main Inkfish languages can be broken down into laryngeal words (made with the larynx), syringeal/drone words (made with the syrinx) or a combination of both, called dual-toned/layered words.
Keep in mind that both word-types can be spoken at the same time. Layering can be used to add additional connotations to a word, or to even make a new one entirely. For example, the laryngeal noun ‘bird’ combined with the syringeal noun ‘metal’ spoken together will create the layered Inkling word ‘aeroplane’, like a compound word in English.
Tumblr media
Dual-toned stuff is more common in Inkling than in Octarian, as the language is older and has more loanwords. Inklish's dependence on the larynx gives it a higher-pitched, clearer sound whereas  Octarian's more monotone syrinx-based structure results in a deep, almost guttural sound.
Both cephalopod languages are heavy on tone and pronunciation, resulting in a plenty of accent indicators in written scripts. I used the in-game fonts for the art but if I were to rework it, each letter would probably be more complicated than traditional Mandarin on steroids. So hell on earth, basically.
On a side note, all of these language features open possibilities for some very cool poetry and literature. An inkfish author could write a poem with two lines of thought occurring at once, or a book with vivid emotional undertones written inside the prose. Pretty cool.
OKAY that's all I have to say thank you for reading! Hopefully this makes sense, feel free to send asks or whatever if it's confusing and I'll do my best to explain it better!

EDIT: Pretty sure this has been DEBUNKED (check newer post I made) my bad
I don’t know it this has been mentioned, but…
Some of the LCD billbords in splatsville are deteriorating.
This screen shot is from the most recent big run so far (umami ruins)
Tumblr media
You can see dead pixels in bottom left corner.(also the BigRun Alert is taking up less space than before, to the point it even gets cut off for the sake of the advertisement)
This next screen shot is from the current splatfest who would make best Deepcut leader)
Tumblr media
Same dead pixels plus new ones in the top right corner.(please note that some of the dark looking bars in the bottom right are from the palanquin Shiver is riding on.
Maybe whoever wins this splatfest will have to decide where Splatsvilles priorities and resources will head towards going forward.
Has anyone else noticed any other deterioration around Splatsville?
Edit: for clarification, this is the screen above the Shoal (local multiplayer lobby). That place seems run down. Maybe it’s meant to represent that?

SPLATOON MEGA CRACKPOT THEORY: AGENT 8 NEVER EXISTED BEFORE OCTO EXPANSION AND TARTAR IS THEIR MOTHER
No, seriously. I was just looking at a picture of Octo Expansion's character select.
Tumblr media
Eight is floating around, naked, in a vat of sanitized ink. The ink conveniently obscures their little octopus genitals, but why are they floating in a vat of sanitized ink?
(For best results, listen to Who Am I? from Final Fantasy VII while reading this post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfRNQleP2bw)
We know from the level Belly Phase that being submerged in sanitized ink, like any other foreign liquid, splats an Octoling to death by inundating and bursting their body.
We know from the level Fake Plastic Station and many levels after it that a regular Octoling being newly sanitized only involves the use of an IV drip, not submerging the whole body in ink.
I therefore deduce that Eight must be floating in sanitized ink because they're about to be printed, born from it.
What other evidence do I have? Well, it's the mem cakes.
The mem cakes you win for completing tests in Octo Expansion are apparently Agent 8's memories.
Agent 8; however, was supposedly in the Octarian Army before joining Kamabo Co.
The Octarian Army are trapped underground. That's why they steal Zapfish in the first place. Agent 8 has never visited the surface world, yet they have memories of the Inkopolis shopkeepers anyway.
Tumblr media
This means at least some of Agent 8's memories are not their own. In turn, "Agent 8" is the composite of multiple minds in one body.
The only way to reconcile Agent 8 having memories of the Octarian Army and the surface world is that Agent 8's narrative of having had a single, consistent life is false and they are an amalgamate.
There were Octolings at one point with these memories separately, they got blended into their raw ink form and fused into Eight.
Also, recall that Seita Inoue interview from 2018. He says Agent 8 is designed to be "around 14" physically. The Octoling soldiers have to be at least 14 years old to assume their adult/human forms.
Agent 8, meanwhile remembers watching Agent 3 fight DJ Octavio two years ago.
If Inoue is not simply mistaken, Agent 8 would have been 12 years old then (a wiggly, goopy, Paul-ish octopus), and they would not be a functional soldier, and thus have no reason to be on Octavio's UFO.
Tumblr media
Note this Sunken Scroll, where Marina and some other Octarians are watching Three and Octavio's fighting concert. All of the spectators are soldiers, whether Octolings or single tentacles.
I must conclude, then, that Eight's defining memory of Three that inspired them. their "Inner Agent 3", is somebody else's memory; the memory of a soldier who did watch Agent 3 before at some point between Splatoon 1 and 2, collecting the thangs and blending themselves into goo.
I can only assume that Tartar literally created Agent 8, as the "supreme DNA", the sum of all its blending experiments, the sum of all knowledge, the blueprint for a new world devoid of individuality and thus devoid of conflict.
Tumblr media
This is why Tartar is shocked that #10,008 would escape the blender after willingly entering it. Tartar printed out #10,008 specifically for the purpose of solving tests, finding thangs, blending themselves up, inviting more people to blend themselves up until everyone in the world is part of Tartar's sentient mint toothpaste clusterfuck.
As Tartar gave birth to Agent 8, this makes Tartar Agent 8's mother.
The Telephone only attempts to destroy civilisation as we know it in response to Eight escaping - there's no indication that its NILS Statue gambit would occur had Eight not escaped. Probably, it was playing the long game, waiting for people to blend themselves into an amalgam until everyone is soup, but then when its perfect, respectable amalgam, its child, developed of a sense of self and escaped, it decided "screw the world of individuality actually".
If you've played BioShock 2, think of Tartar as a Sofia Lamb figure, and specimen #10,008 as an Eleanor, a People's Daughter, the sum of all past knowledge in one unholy vessel.
I believe this is why the character is only referred to as "Eight" - even after they retrieve their memories, they still don't remember their name, even to Pearl and Marina, their closest friends. Why? It's because they never had a name. They're the composite of anywhere up to ten thousand minds in one body.
Tumblr media
In talking of the consciousness of "multiple Octolings mixed together" in this Dev Diary, Marina almost gets the memo. She still asks "could sanitization have also caused Agent 8's memory loss?", she is still under the impression that Agent 8 "lost their memory", rather than coming to my conclusion that Agent 8 was an artificially-constructed being in the first place.
JUST ONE MORE THING...
Tumblr media
Kamabo Co. still carries out tests. Commander Tartar is now powerless to destroy Inkopolis or merge everyone's minds into goo or whatever, but the company is very much still active as of Splatoon 3.
In this White Day 2020 artwork,
Tumblr media
Agents 8 and 3 are playing with C.Q. Cumber.
Recall that Splatoon takes place in real time, and that all of its promotional artwork is diegetic and therefore canon unless proven otherwise.
This artwork is from 2020, and it portrays Agent 3 (who never participated in Kamabo Co.'s tests) in the Deepsea Metro, playing with C.Q. Cumber, who still wears a Kamabo Co. hat, suggesting that he still works for Kamabo Co. as of 2020 (three years after Octo Expansion).
My other proof for this claim is the presence of Kamabo Co. advertisments outside the Deepsea Metro entrance in Inkopolis Square in Splatoon 3, as of Inkopolis Square's addition to the game in 2024.
The metro entrance is blocked off by Marigold and the Tableturf Battle corner, yet the paper advertisements are still there on the ground.
You might suggest that the advertisements are the same ones that were there in Splatoon 2, but paper left on the ground outside doesn't last seven years.
The Deepsea Metro itself is, as we see in Octo Expansion and in the maps of Lemuria Hub, a regular subway system where people commute to work, as well as the site of a weird octopus-Aperture Science facility.
The advertisements, are specifically for Kamabo Co., not for the Deepsea Metro itself.
The fact that Agent 8 willingly returns to the Deepsea Metro in the White Day 2020 artwork suggests that they have some kind of emotional attachment to it, like Marina does to the Octarian domes.
This would make sense if, rather than just a place where Eight was held captive and forced to solve tests for a few hours then escape, the Deepsea Metro was Eight's actual birthplace.
I hope, if nothing else, this post made you think.
On a slightly related note, I got 83% marks on my course assignment about the deep sea and its organisms, including those that gather around hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and whale falls.

okay
so i saw a post about Lemuria Hub and the Deepsea Metro having ties to each other, and i have a conspiracy theory that's been rotting in my brain ever since i saw the Deepsea Metro map in Lemuria Hub
here's all your proof of that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
plus, the eye posters from Kamabo Co. being present in Lemuria Hub as well. it's pretty obvious from these that Lemuria and Kamabo are tied together.
we all know and remember Tartar's goal: bring back humanity. but the name "Lemuria" holds a lot more weight than most casual splatoon players might realize.
because i am a nerd, i looked it up.
From the Wikipedia page:
Lemuria, or Limuria, was a continent proposed in 1864 by zoologist Philip Sclater, theorized to have sunk beneath the Indian Ocean, later appropriated by occultists in supposed accounts of human origins. (...)
The hypothesis was proposed as an explanation for the presence of lemur fossils on Madagascar and the Indian subcontinent but not in continental Africa or the Middle East. Biologist Ernst Haeckel's suggestion in 1870 that Lemuria could be the ancestral home of humans caused the hypothesis to move beyond the scope of geology and zoogeography, ensuring its popularity outside of the framework of the scientific community. (...)
The theory was discredited with the discovery of plate tectonics and continental drift in the 20th century.
this (now disproven) theory ties in pretty neatly with Tartar's goal. "Bring back humanity". the implications of Lemuria Hub being tied to Kamabo Co. very likely means that Tartar's hypothetical new age of humans would have originated from Lemuria. Splatoon 3 seems to like a focus on origins, because we also get the origins of marinekind in its storymode, Alterna and the Return of the Mammalians.
but there's something else that caught my eye too.
SashiMori.
with the release of Lemuria Hub, nintendo brought back the fictional band, SashiMori! which is great and fantastic, but im pretty damn sure that they didn't bring any other bands back from Splatoon 1 or 2 completely unchanged for Splatoon 3. sure, OTH was brought back for multi-player OSTs, but in the form of Damp Socks. (and the idols are a sort of special case anyways.) Squid Squad returned only as Front Roe. Yoko from Ink Theory returned only in Yoko and the Gold Bazookas.
but nintendo didn't change SashiMori's presentation at all. the only thing that did change, and was notably very mentioned, was the fact that SashiMori's DJ Paul was older now. that's it. (nintendo also didn't change Acht. this is an important detail, but ill get to them in a minute).
Paul is pretty interesting when you look at him. there's very little information, but what we do have about him ties in pretty nicely with Kamabo Co., Tartar's association with humanity, and Lemuria Hub. for starters, Paul's DJ mixing for SashiMori is hailed as unique in universe, for incorporating human voices into SashiMori tracks.
From the Splatoon Wiki page on SashiMori:
Paul is the band's DJ, an Octoling. He is 10 years old in Splatoon 2 and 16 years old in Splatoon 3, and his favorite foods are kelp and biscuits. He remixes from sources including DJ Real Sole, DJ Octavio, and various ancient records, and is surprisingly talented for his age. Originally, SashiMori had a traditional vocalist, but they were replaced due to their self-centered personality, after which Paul was recruited through a tweet. According to the Japanese Family vs. Friends dialogue, he is friends with Marina.
(...) This music has vocals but no vocalist! Through the genius of DJ Paul, all the vocals have been sampled from a collection of ancient vinyl.
so, Paul and SashiMori are associated with humanity because they literally use human voices in their tracks.
here's the final nail in coffin to make it all tie together. it's a pretty popular theory that Paul and Acht "Dedf1sh" (who was sanitized by Commander Tartar and composed all the Octo Expansion soundtracks) are blood relatives.
Here's their designs from Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Acht and Paul have the same symbols on their hats. their ink color even matches (from before Acht was sanitized). Acht has blue tentacles and red tips, Paul has red tentacles and blue tips.
even from the wiki trivia section of SashiMori's page:
In-universe, Paul and Acht are speculated to be blood relatives. They notably have the same symbol appearing on their hats, wear black clothing, with Paul wearing black T-shirts in both album artwork and Acht wearing a black dress, have three tentacles for their hair, and Paul's ink color looks similar to Acht's ink color before they were sanitized.
so what does this have to do with Lemuria Hub?
following nintendo's trend of splatoon artist releases with each season, they bring back an old artist and repurpose them into a new band or presentation. for Sizzle Season 2024, the band they brought back was SashiMori, but completely unchanged. (tangentially related, for the release of Side Order, they brought back Dedf1sh, also completely unchanged.)
the return of SashiMori completely unchanged breaks nintendo's pattern. alongside that, the stage released this time was only Lemuria Hub, and no other stage. (with the exception of Drizzle Season 2024, which released only Marlin Airport,) the trend has been to release two stages per season. this time, it's only one stage.
TLDR:
Kamabo Co.'s goal was to bring back humanity via testing and blending marinekind through the deepsea metro. Acht "Dedf1sh" was the musician of Kamabo Co., and sanitized in the name of this goal. Paul from SashiMori uses human voices in his tracks. Acht and Paul are very likely related. Lemuria Hub has Kamabo Co. posters and its deepsea metro map on display. the name "Lemuria" is associated with the origins of humanity via a (now disproven) theory. SashiMori's new music was released alongside Lemuria Hub.
SashiMori's new songs, with human voices mixed in them, playing over the train station of Lemuria Hub, which was likely an access point of some kind or tied in to Kamabo Co. somehow, is an EXTREMELY POWERFUL AND INTERESTING IMAGE. Lemuria Hub is hearing human voices for the first time via SashiMori's new songs, and it's been taken over for the one thing Tartar hated the most about marinekind: Turf War. (in a twisted way, Lemuria Hub hearing human voices is probably what Tartar wanted, but I doubt it wanted it like this. very ironic, i approve.)
so what does all of this mean? well... we can only speculate at this point. the themes of humanity in Splatoon 3 are matched in quantity only by Salmon Run lore (but, that's a whole other essay post, i won't get into it here). i personally think it means that we're going to see some kind of connection to humanity, OR salmonid development/lore in the next game. and with the FinalFest theme for Splatoon 3 being "Past, Present, or Future", im REALLY excited to see what it could mean. maybe Tartar's alive somehow, or maybe we'll get to look back at the evolution and development of marinekind, or maybe Lil Judd will finally snap since he's taken over Grizzco and the salmonids will have their apocalypse.
(as a final ending note: there's also a TON of association from all of this... with Off The Hook. OTH is associated with nearly everything here; its speculated Pearl was SashiMori's original vocalist before they got Paul, Marina is friends with Paul, OTH helped 8 break out of Kamabo Co., Pearl herself murdered Tartar with her voice; Off The Hook changed the world with Chaos vs Order, and Off The Hook is representing "the present" in the FinalFest. coincidence? maybe. who knows?)

There's some very, very strange dialogue leading up to the bossfight against Mr. Grizz that I never see anyone talk about - maybe because nobody has any idea what the heck it means.
When Mr. Grizz is explaining his "business plan," he says that it has three parts - "The vessel, the spirit, and the wisdom of the ages."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...What? What is any of this? It never gets mentioned again, and doesn't seem to have any relation to his plan to fly a rocket into space and explode it to rain Fuzzy Ooze everywhere. This just never gets explained.
Immediately after this, Mr. Grizz sucks out Cuttlefish's brain juices.
Tumblr media
This also never comes into play??? Why did he suck out Cuttlefish's brain? He had already created the Fuzzy Ooze, it wasn't a component necessary for that. The rocket was already about to go into space. Why would he even need Cuttlefish's "essence" for any of that?
I think he wasn't just trying to turn all the sea creatures hairy - I think that was just the first part of his three-step plan for success.
I think he was trying to recreate humans.
The Wisdom of The Ages: A suitably intelligent brain fitting for a human.
The Vessel: A suitable body to become the human. (Inklings are already humanoid - adding hair to them makes them... a vague approximation of a human. Hence why this is the first component listed - turning the Inklings into mammals to create a suitable vessel is the first thing he does.)
The Spirit: ...??? It's also possible that The Spirit is Cap'n Cuttlefish's brain, and the Wisdom of the Ages is the crystals contain mankind's hopes and dreams, or perhaps O.R.C.A. since it contains all of humanity's wisdom.
Whatever the case is, there was more to his plan than just coating the earth in Fuzzy Ooze.
But... okay, so what? Why even bring up all this weird information at all if it was never gonna go anywhere? We don't even get to see the second and third steps of his plan. We don't even get to know what they are. So what was the point of having this even be a thing?
Personally, I think it's setting up for a future plot point. Cap'n Cuttlefish's brain essence juice is still out there somewhere, yeah? I bet this is going to come into play in the future.

post side order release edit: this theory was debunked within the first five minutes of the game. lol
HI SPLATOON FANDOM IM HERE TO MAKE A POST BC I HAVE SEEN NOBODY TALK ABOUT THIS (probably because it's most likely insignificant and means nothing)
ok so take a look at these renders of 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
do u notice that weird like. armband thing on their left arm? kind of looks like it was sort of attached to or even drilled into them in a way, judging by the look of the round silver things on the armband. sort of like a futuristic attachment type deal
ok now take a look at acht's left arm.
Tumblr media
bandages? on the same arm as the armband 8 has?
and we KNOW acht didn't have these bandages b4 if their album art is their canonical appearance before side order.
Tumblr media
they have their iconic wristband, but no bandages and no weird future armband thingy.
if it's just an insignificant little detail, my theory is that this armband is something similar to the tags we see on 8's arm and leg during Octo Expansion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's even on the same arm!
it may even play a bigger role, such as maybe being connected to the color chips and board ? perhaps it's what actually gives 8 the boosts from said chips
am i on copium? probably. but it's really strange to me that acht would have bandages in the exact same place when they definitely were not depicted with them before, and im definitely not the only person who thinks that the bandages are odd
if acht DID have the armband, then the bandages could mean they just. violently ripped it off of themselves to avoid having to go thru whatever testing facility this one is
also as a bonus:
Tumblr media
ACHT WAS PLANNED FOR SIDE ORDER THE WHOLE TIME. THATS THEIR BOOT AND THE SKIN EVEN LOOKS GREEN (despite it being kinda dark and desaturated due to the way the photo is finished)

it's 2 am right now and I'm trying to think about the decor and outfits for my OCs in an idol AU with a space theme but it's hard to not feel like I'm copying off the hook because not only do they have this whole space vibe in their sp3 design (Pearl's outfit kinda reminding us of astronauts and Marina having literal space in her tentacles) but their inkopolis news set up also have this vibe. The shape of the TV + Pearl sofa being all rounded can make us think of retro futurism : when people in the past imagined the future. and this theme sometimes involved space so?? idk I might be tired and overthinking things
Tumblr media
exemple of how rounded furniture are in this aesthetic

are you in the opinion that inkfish (ig really just inklings) are viviporus, oviparus, or ovoviviparous? ovoviviparous would make sense seeing theyre trying to "imitate" humans to some respect but still have squidlike features... but as far as i know we only have proof as to where octarians come from and no proof as to if inklings do the same
reproduction lore posting 🔥🔥🔥 i see them as egg layers. maybe them being ovoviviparous could work maybe but??? idk, eggs have to be involved. also them being egg layers is weird and i like when inkfish are Weird. I've gotten into this topic before on this blog but it's been a couple years and i think it's worth rehashing First thing to address: bellybuttons. They have them and I hate it almost as much as i hate that they have breasts. i think both are just a result of "imitating" humans in universe, and for design reasons so they don't come off as too uncanny to us, the human playerbase. which is just cowardice to me but okay.<3 In this concept art for Callie in the Art of Splatoon 2 i think this is the only time bellybuttons are addressed, in the top right corner:
Tumblr media
"I realized this while drawing, but inklings have bellybuttons..."
that really sounds like it was a design choice that wasn't thought about that deeply...
now there's 2 things that make me believe they have to come from eggs. first from the first artbook:
Tumblr media
This is the growth cycle of a squid from its larval to juvenile stages.
larvae come from eggs.
second, this excerpt from the Splatune album jacket about the Calamari Inkantation.
Of course, when we talk about these girls, we can't leave out the "Calamari Inkantation" which is both heavenly to listen to and heavenly to sing. This song, which is also used as the train melody for the Inkopolis Line, is imprinted in the DNA of all Inklings. The sea is our mother, the place where all of life hatched from, and the place where there is no way to return. Since ancient times, this song has been filled with the swirling feelings of "love" and "reverence" towards the sea.
I translated this myself, the word there is specifically "hatched" like from an egg, and not a general term for being born.
One could argue that since this is referring to the squids of the past, it might not apply to modern inkfish. But still real life cephalopods lay eggs, and I don't think it'd be out of the question for modern inkfish to do the same. There are other sapient species that didn't "evolve out" of egg-laying, evidenced by Nishida's 247 siblings and this scroll on coconut crabs.
Tumblr media
Regarding Octarians, Octolings develop in the same way Inklings do. so they too would likely come from eggs.
Tumblr media
we're ignoring this because 1. it's clearly just concept art that 2. has more recent evidence going against this being the norm for octoling development. I think this is just a weird edge case or just straight up not canon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
baby marina matching the 3rd stage of inkling development shown on the above chart while paul looks like the 4th stage. There's also smollusk that looks like the first stage/ a real octopus paralarva, but since it's a digital entity, who knows how valid that is? Also, Mashup/Warabi from Diss-pair was also confirmed in Ordertune to have come from the same hometown as Acht (the underground) and was described in Haikara Walker as having parents. So Octoling development=Inkling development=eggs??? finally, not 100% if this is what you're asking but as for cut-tentacle Octarians, but with Inklings, this has come up...once
-- But the Octarians like the Octotroopers...? Amano: That's a different thing. Inoue: All together they're part of the Octarian species, but Octarians like the Octotroopers are a separate thing.  --Does that mean that there are some squids that can't take a humanoid form? Inoue: So far, none have been discovered. There may be some somewhere, though
I think the "there may be some somewhere" is just keeping it vague in case they wanna use that idea. but i seriously doubt they will at this point. the concept behind octarians is that octopuses have basically tiny brains in each of their arms, so those tentacle octarians are like if their arms grew into a separate being. Real squids are not built like that, and we even see in game inklings having less movement in their tentacles, and use more styles that cut into their tentacles compared to octolings.
ok that's all TL;DR EGG SUPREMACY 🔥🔥🔥

The Sexualization of Octolings
Hey y’all! My friend Ray suggested this lil thread essay post whatever it’s called, and I figured it would make perfect sense to do. I’ve never really made an in-depth Splatoon post before, but I’m not afraid to try. Today’s topic is.. the sexualization of Octolings.
We all know Octolings. We all think they’re cute and fun and cool, but they’re just so.. you know.. sexy. That’s not a bad thing, but it seems like it’s their whole entire species which is literally sexualized and shown in midriff-baring, skimpy outfits. I mean, come on guys. When Callie, the most wholesome Inkling around, briefly joins the Octo Party, she’s suddenly turned into the hottest dominatrix-looking rigid icon ever (a number of my friends started to crush on her after that).
Tumblr media
It’s definitely not just Callie. We all know Marina, guys. I don’t even have to show you images to prove what she looks like, her and her love for crop tops. And Marina, as we all know, is an ex-member of the Octarian army, like all Octolings.. like Agent 8, whose Octo Expansion outfit was on the sexy side with a crop top and high-heeled little booties. And who later in Side Order wears a form-fitting bodysuit that shows off their midriff and causes several Splatoon players to meme the fact that their backside seems to be lookin’ large to death. Why is it that Marina and Eight, who used to be in the army, have sexualized attire even now? And when Callie linked up with them, she too was wearing a shirt that in certain poses accentuates her chest, and pants so loose-fitting you can see her actual underwear.
Have you seen the enemy Octoling’s outfits? Yes, they’ve got on armor, but it’s stylized as crop tops and short shorts. Not to mention that most of the enemy Octolings present as or resemble females, and their armor has the age-old shoddy trope of having extra panels for their breasts. They’ve got little booties too and look more like a dancing glam squad or sexualized warrior cosplay than actual warriors, but this is just a design choice and doesn’t affect the way they fight. A pretty weird design choice for a game like Splatoon if you ask me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I find this very bizarre and random. Because it seems that the entire Octoling enemy brigade has some level of sexiness to them, especially the females. Every single one. But wait on a second. There’s two Octolings we haven’t covered yet. Shiver, an Octoling, has an outfit no more racier than Frye, her Inkling co-star’s. And Acht’s outfit may have a questionable thigh slit, but that’s nowhere near the typical belly-button-bearing short shorts of the Octarian army. That seems to make my theory seem dumb, huh?
Not in the slightest. See, Acht was never in the Octarian army’s fighting unit with the rest of the girlies (they were in the army and wore the same uniform, but as they were never on the front lines they seemed to be able to wear it differently, tilting it so their midriff wasn’t easily seen and wearing a bracelet instead of those tight gloves). As for Shiver, she was born into a clan of Octolings long separated from the other Octarians. Agent 8 on the other hand was once an Octarian warrior, as was Marina (she was later promoted though, but even so along with other enemy Octoling warriors was there during Octavio’s fight with Agent 3), and Callie was turned into one briefly, or something like one, despite her being an Inkling. It seems all the sexualized Octolings were once on the front lines strutting their stuff while fighting. So why is this?
Well, here’s my theory added onto another random semi-theory that I am here to share with you all. You see, in Japanese, the enemy Octolings, preferably the ones you fight, are called “Octo-Amazons”, and the Amazons are legendary female warriors. So perhaps DJ Octavio knew what he was doing with this, and it’s a sort of empowerment move that perhaps the masculine Octolings work on maintenance jobs or something given we never see them, whereas most feminine Octolings are fighters with their female-ness put on blatant display, waggling their little hips as they jump in to do battle with the Inklings. And this practice is so well-known among Octolings that those formerly in the army still tend to gravitate towards more revealing clothes even when they are free. Just a penny for your thoughts, Splatoon community.

So the logic of Mr grizz for the quota number (700,000,000) is that the salmonids used to do the swarm on inkling octoling territory every 70 years and then it ramped up and this time is the 7th place they've attacked so 7 0s at the end of 70 is 700,000,000.
BUT
you know what else we have 7 of? Idols. 2 squid sisters+ 2 lesbians+ 3 best friends = 7 lesbians
Wonder if there's gonna be a recurring theme of 7 coming up or if this is a coincidence.
(cuz like s3 has had so many things around three, trizooka, tristrike, tri stringer, three idols instead of the usual two, three teams at splatfests, )

I think the best way to get a picture of how splatoon money works is translating it to Japanese yen. And then translating it back to USD (cuz im a filthy amurican). Doing it this way makes the economy of Splatoon look very interesting
…So can someone tell me how LE Soccer Shoes go from $17.42 (G2,600) in splatoon 1 all the way to $50.26 (G7,500) in 2&3????
These are just the shoes, btw. And most things were reasonably raised over the years (like $2 to $5) or even lowered but sometimes things like that catch me off guard. and no, idc if the math is not 100% accurate. This is a video game we’re talking about…

OK ITS TIME FOR ME TO YAP ABOUT WHAT I WANT IN THE NEXT GAME TO COPE WITH SPLATOON 3 ENDING
ok so first of all, congrats team past!! y’all fought hard (hard enough for me to ragequit at one point actually,,,)
im gonna be completely honest, i reallyyyyy dont want a great turf war/legends-arceus-but-splatoon game, or for that at least to be the entire game, anyway. that would put the main story on pause for around 5 years, and bring us back to the main conflict between the inklings and octolings, and im gonna be honest, im so done with that. and plus, the weapon roster would have to be narrowed significantly in order to fit in with the plot.
what i think would be absolutely AMAZING would be for the main city to be have an 80’s retro vibe, similar to the aesthetic of the octo expansion. we can all agree that octo expansions aesthetic was on point, yeah?? i feel like that could be an awesome main city.
now, getting to the story mode/dlcs,,, i think it would be really really cool to have a time-travel based game. for the main story mode we could travel back to the past, maybe to the great turf war, but also maybe to other important events in splatoon lore, like stuff going back to the human extinction.
for the dlcs (plural, i hope and pray) we could have one take place in the present, im not entirely sure what the storyline of that would be… i haven’t thought about it a bunch… but continuing the theme of time travel, we could travel into the future for the next dlc. i think that’d be so cool.
im gonna be kinda honest- im not entirely sure i want a new agent. i think a cool feature could be a 4-player mode in the solo campaigns could be maybe picking your agent, and then playing as them maybe?? im not really sure how that would work out, but i was talking about it with my little brother today and i thought that was a fun idea. not sure how realistic it is, but all the same.
ok yap session over, did i cook chat
