MNCBA Brings SpringCon into 2024 with Plans to Return to the Fairgrounds
MNCBA SpringCon is this weekend. The organization has a new board of directors and big plans to grow.

This year, MNCBA has a new board of directors and big plans to grow. Ahead of the organization’s spring convention, which is happening at the M Health Fairview…

Here’s a pic of Trina Robbins at SpringCon 2016 here in Minnesota. Loved her books spotlighting female cartoonists from a generation past. #TrinaRobbins #Icon

Introducing the Minnesota Comic Book Association (MNCBA)
FallCon comes to the Bloomington Armory this weekend. Learn how the newly formed Minnesota Comic Book Association is keeping this Twin Cities comic con tradition alive.
On Saturday, the Bloomington Armory will host the Minnesota Comic Book Association’s FallCon comic convention. It’s the second convention for this new local comic fan association, whose inaugural event, SpringCon, took place at the same venue earlier this year. If your reaction to that information is that you’re pretty sure SpringCon and FallCon are not, in fact, new conventions, you’re sort of…

Hey guys. : ) Yeah, just to let everyone know. I have two May conventions that I need to start getting merchandise ready for. Got SpringCon and Animinneapolis coming up, and here is my wall of noted ideas of what I am going to be working on.
So I'm thinking of taking a hiatus and focusing everything on trying to get this wall done! And I will post stuff in bulk, like all the badges together and all the buttons together once their done. Though prints I may upload them slowly one at a time or at least by fandom. x'D But yeah..  just may seem a bit inactive in the art part from me while I work on this. Just a heads up. ^^ Later guys~

Privilege Walks + Race
At my convention this weekend, we did this interesting thing called a privilege walk, where everybody stands in a single line and a speaker reads statements based on privilege. If the statement applies to you, you either take a step forward or step backward, the idea being to create a sort of scatter plot of who is privileged and who isn’t. Because the theme this weekend was race, these questions were race-based. For example, “if your native country has ever lost a war with the US and become part of the US’s territory, take a step backward.”
I came into this not having done it before, thinking it would be kinda like a fun game. But in the end, there was nothing fun about it. The best two words I can describe it as are heavy and powerful. About ¾ of the people there were white, and by the end, most of us were in the front line. Even the farthest back white person (maybe 4 or 5 steps behind the front) was not as far back as any POC there.
Lemme repeat that: Even the farthest back white person was not as far back as any POC there.
I remember a statement that was read: “if you were ever told to dress or act a certain way because it reflected on the image of your entire race, take a step backward.” I felt my stomach plummet, a lump in my throat. Why does this apply to POC, but not to white people? Why is society like this?
There were a few times I was tempted to step backward or stand still- if your school taught you in detail the history of your race/ethnicity, take a step forward- because my schools so often glorified white people and western culture. But I didn’t because I knew that at least I’d learned something, and many kids didn’t get that opportunity to learn about their native culture because they weren’t white. In elementary and middle school, the only thing I remember being taught about Africans and African Americans was the slavery part. We didn’t go into it extensively until this year in APUSH.
Being in the front didn’t feel good, I didn’t feel proud of it. But those times when I wanted to step backward or stand still, I realized was just me trying to ignore my privilege.
And another thing along the lines of ignoring privilege is the idea of basically removing yourself from white culture. Sure, it can be a white person saying “god, white people are sooo terrible” but it’s also saying “I’m 1/32 Native American so I’m oppressed.” I use this example because I am 1/32 Native American but I’m pasty white and don’t even know my tribe. I don’t suffer from any Native American struggles, so I don’t have the right to “relate” to that culture/ethnicity. If you’re someone who tries to to “remove” yourself from your whiteness, it’s highly disrespectful and doesn’t solve any problems. All it does is take away from the struggles of real POC.
Being at the front of the line was supposed to make us uncomfortable. It was supposed to say “wow there really is a problem here.” But what knowing what privilege you have is not supposed to do is make you try to deny your privilege. The goal isn’t to try to make everyone equally far back in line, it’s to try to make everyone equally as far forward. And there’s a real difference there.
