I had a really lovely trip to Springbrook for two days recently with some of my best friends 🥰 I love Springbrook so much! We stayed at the Mouse's House, a place with cabins that look like they belong in a rainforest fairytale ❤

We did the Twin Falls hike, which was so beautiful. I had a little swim at the bottom of the falls, because the water looked so nice!! But it was freezing. Once the water was up to my ribs I was like, I need to get out, my hands are going numb 😭 but it was special to have a swim anyway! There was a rainbow at the bottom of the falls, which was so magical 🌈

While we were at Springbrook, we also got to cook lovely food, see some of the lookouts at night (the Gold Coast looked so glittery), and swim in the Mouses House spa. And on the way back we visited the River Mill where we got to feed deer and turtles, and we ate the best vegan Japanese food at Izakaya Midori 🥰 ....sadly I got sick with covid as soon as I got back though, so that's not fun 😭

Many of us want to reduce the number of chemicals we use each day. Whether they be household cleaners or insect control, the goal is to minimize these noxious ingredients from impacting the family and the environment.

Insecticide Poisoning in Cats and Dogs

Certain products may claim efficacy in eliminating mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and other pests, but did you know they can harm your pet? 

Each year, thousands of pets are exposed to these household hazards sometimes unknowingly by their owners. Several toxins are added in most pest control sprays, so be wary of these poisonous ingredients: 

Carbofuran

Amitraz

Acephate

Chlorpyrifos

Diazinon

Fonofos

Malathion

Disulfoton

Fenoxycarb

Methomyl

These ingredients are commonly found in a range of parasite control products, but contain powerful toxins that can cause neurological problems, kidney failure, and other serious emergency medical issues.

Natural Options for Pet-Friendly Bug Spray

In order to keep pests out of the house, the key is to get to know what attracts them. Then, modify what is available to them and use natural forms of repellent. 

Ants

Ants are the bane of every picnic when they start biting and getting into the grub. They also love to hang out in the kitchen, where there is sugar and other sweet treats. But did you know they hate the smell of vinegar? Yes!

Use a mixture of white vinegar and water and spray around doors and windows. The extra bonus is that you can use this concoction to mop the floors, which again, will reinforce your vinegar-ant barrier.

To repel ants, roaches, and termites, mix equal parts of baking soda and powdered sugar. Then, spread the mixture around doors, baseboards, and window sills. Cinnamon has also been known to work well.

Mosquitoes

The first order of business is to remove all standing water around the garden and yard. This includes the bird bath, unfortunately. These places allow mosquitoes to breed and thrive, and if you have standing water anywhere, it’s difficult to get rid of these flying pests.

You can also choose a combination of essential oils combined with water to spray around the home. Or, for the green thumb, use a variety of pest-loathing herbs around the garden, which also make for delicious salads and seasoning.

Mosquitoes particularly dislike the smell of citrus, like lemon, so freshly squeezed citrus can be added to your spray for a good, fresh scent that repels mosquitoes.

Fleas and Ticks

If you have ever experienced a flea infestation or have tried to remove fleas from your dog, you know the struggle. 

Ticks are quite prevalent in Illinois, including those that carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Many flea and tick control products on the market can be quite toxic.

Here are a few solutions that rely on common things you have in the kitchen.

Fleas loathe vinegar and citrus (much like other insects). Make a solution of one cup of vinegar, a quart of water, and one cup of baby shampoo. Use this to bathe your furry friend weekly.

Certain fragrances we enjoy are natural repellents to ticks. Use a few drops in one of the following essential oils and water in a spray bottle and spritz around the home and patio, as well as diluted in your pet’s shampoo.

Lavender

Peppermint

Citrus

Lemongrass

Cedar

Rose geranium

Just remember that essential oils are toxic if ingested by a pet, so store these in a secure cupboard when not in use and keep your pet from attempting to lick off the solution. Distract them with a Kong toy or something edible until the solution is dry. 

Make sure to keep lawns cut regularly and remove weeds, grasses, and places bugs like to hide. Secure any loose screens on doors and windows, as well, to keep bugs from coming in.

People in P.E.I. still reeling from post-tropical cycline Dorian

Four days after post-tropical cyclone Dorian tore across Prince Edward Island, the government is still trying to figure out just how widespread the damage is.

"Our concerns now are the most vulnerable, whether that's the seniors or young families," said Justice and Public Safety Minister Bloyce Thompson.

On Wednesday, the province announced $50,000 would be given to the five food banks across the island.

"We'll use the supplies we have on hand, we'll use the funds to purchase more, so it really is an immediate response," said Mike MacDonald, the executive director of the P.E.I. food bank.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, there were more than 12,000 customers still without power.

In the town of Kensington, downed trees still blocked sidewalks, and even roads.

In Cavendish, winds gusting to over 100 km/h knocked down thousands of trees at the province's national park.

Parks Canada released a statement earlier today saying while some sites have reopened, many of the parks and trails across the island will remain closed until crews are able to complete safety assessments in the area.

Cavendish Beach campground will remain closed for the remainder of the season.

Springbrook resident Dave McDougal woke up Sunday morning to find four of his neighbours trees had crashed into his home.

He says it will be days before his property feels like home again.

"What we have seen over the past few days is Islanders coming together to support their neighbours, their friends," said Housing Minister Ernie Hudson.

After our volunteering on the campground we went further north and the first stop was Grassy Head. There we enjoyed the sun and the beach and did our laundry.

The next night we slept on the Red Cliff Campground. The special thing there is you share the place with a lot of kangaroos. While you're sitting next to the van they are eating not even 10m next to you.

Byron Bay is a small hippie-surf town and aswell the most eastern point on the Australian Mainland. We really liked this place and because of that we stayed 3 nights there. We didn't surf because it's also famous for its sharks. Instead of surfing we hiked some trails, drunk some coffees and enjoyed the vibe.

From this tiny, small place we went to the pure opposite. Surfers Paradise is a part of Gold Coast, where the skyscrapers are biult just next to the ocean. It was really impresive to look but for the night we went back to the nature.

Springbrook National Park was a perfect escape to enjoy the first good day after a rainperiod, did some hiking and see some waterfalls.

We explored Brisbane, the biggest city of Queensland, just for one day. Because all the cities in Australia are similar. But we did an awesome rivercrossing by a ferry.

That river reminded us of our hometown.

After that city we went further inland to see the Glass House Mountains.

This 11 small mountains are funny to see but not a long stay worth it. So we drove back to Coloundra, the Sunshine Coast. We came for a short visit but the waves were so good that we stayed longer.

Noosa Heads was one of our highlights so far. The National Park behind the small town is stunning. Lightblue water, a coastal track, Koalas, Dolphins and Seaturtles. Of course we went surfing twice in this paradise. And it was the last surfspot, because of the Great Barrier Reef and the deadly jellyfishs. Noosa has by the way one of only two Everglades worldwide.

Raimbow Beach was our departure point for our Fraser Island Tour. We spent 3 days on the world biggest sandisland and drove around in a 4WD. We saw some really nice places and enjoyed the time with a cool group. The nights we spent in tents without some mattresses and pillows, that was an adventure.

1770 is named after the year Captain James Cook discovered this place. Agnes Water is just next to the small town and this was the place we relaxed for 2 days after Fraser Island.

    Even though Brock had played in Championship hockey games, he had never been more nervous than he was bringing their daughter home. Being one of eight children, everyone expected him to have a huge family, and maybe this was the start of one, but ever since being in the hospital he didn’t know if he was ready. So many thoughts ran thought his mind about not being able to provide for little Ava due to his career and not being around enough for Jess that it got him a bit paranoid. The last thing he wanted was for either of them to think that he didn’t love them, but he knew after this little break it would be the two of them for a bit. 

   Jess did make things a little bit easier. She was such a natural the minute she held little Ava in her arms. It was like she knew exactly what to do and he just hoped that he could follow along. While he was white knuckling the steering wheel the whole ride home, she helped him relax so he didn’t have to worry too much. It was their first day with Ava in their house, and without the help of any nurses or doctors. They’d have to do all of this by themselves, and he just hoped that they were ready. 

    After everything Jess went through, Brock made sure that she was comfortable in their bed so she could rest, and he happily joined her. That was until they heard crying from the baby’s room meaning she was up from her little nap. “I’ve got her.” He said with a little smile as he headed over to her room and went to go see what was wrong. She was so tiny and he felt like it he picked her up, he’d break her. Carefully he took her into his arms and noticed that she needed a diaper change. One of the nurses thankfully helped him at the hospital, but he hadn’t done it on his own before. It was like everything she said to him went right out of his head, and he forgot it all. As he carried the baby into their bedroom, he gave her a nervous smile and panicked a bit. “Can you help me with her diaper? Please? I kinda forget what I’m supposed to do.”
