Brutal beauty: How a Russian master makes unique art from steel and crude iron
CULTURE
NOV 14 2017 OLEG YEGOROV
Tumblr media
"Lamberjack's rest", a mini-bar made by Nik Faber studioSergey Gaydenkov / Nik Faber
Today gold or jewels will barely raise an eyebrow – these materials are everywhere and each item made of them costs a lot, no matter if it’s worth it. Nikolay Savinkov, a self-employed entrepreneur from Moscow, challenges this approach. His works are made of cheap materials but demonstrate real craftsmanship.
“I used to sell such trash while working in jewelry sales!” Nikolay Savinkov, the founder and the only full-time employee of the Nik Faber studio, recalls with a laugh. “Every item made of gold or other precious metal costs a lot, no matter how primitive it is. You can simply put a hole in a gold brick – wow, it’s already a treasure. It was pissing me off.”
One day, long after leaving his job in jewelry sales, Savinkov decided to shake things up and prove that real art depends on the mastery of the artist, not on the material. So he launched his own small enterprise, Nik Faber.
“My aim is to prove that art can be created not only with cheap materials, like black steel or crude iron, but also without fine jewelry tools,” Savinkov explains. He works predominantly with semi-automatic welding machines, angle grinders and screwdrivers. The result is impressive, with tiny details worked through scrupulously.
Tumblr media
"Steampunk" clocks.Sergey Gaydenkov / Nik Faber
Usually this small business runs as follows: Savinkov invents a concept and makes a sample which attracts buyers (through social nets and adverts). Sometimes people ask him to create something specific, but most just like to repeat an existing pattern. “Few people are creative,” Savinkov notes with regret.
Tumblr media
"Mosquito" lamp.Sergey Gaydenkov / Nik Faber
At least his own mind is creative. Nik Faber’s works range widely: lamps in the form of giant insects, sword or pistol-shaped shoe horns, giant hookahs-lamps-clocks (yes, three in one). Not to mention corkscrews and glass-holders of all possible shapes and sizes – these are among the most popular orders.
Tumblr media
"Pistol" shoehorn.Sergey Gaydenkov / Nik Faber
Savinkov’s approach is very individual as he doesn’t use molds or copying tools. “Even when I’m trying to make an exact replica of an item I made before, it will turn out unique,” he explains. “It’s manual labor, so the details will differ anyway.”
youtube
Nik Faber
Making different items out of metal has been Savinkov’s main source of income for about seven years. He doesn’t always work alone, outsourcing to several people, including a constructor, a woodman and a logistics specialist. But they don’t work with him all the time: when Savinkov is in the workshop with metal, he is alone.
Tumblr media
"Moon-rover" ashtray.Sergey Gaydenkov / Nik Faber
Sometimes the job can be pretty rough. The artist recalls that one of the most difficult items in his career was an ashtray in the shape of a moon-rover: there were eight small wheels each consisting of three discs, with ten tiny spokes in each. “I had to weld 0.8 mm wires, lots of small dots. A slip of the hand or a bit too much heat, and everything would have melted.” Nor was creating a lamp in the shape of Snork’s head (a fictional creature from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe) a piece of cake, but it turned out well.
Tumblr media

Savinkov works in different styles (loft, techno art), but most of his creations recall good old steampunk. That’s no coincidence – the artist respects this style for its combination of heaviness and elegance.
“We live in an époque of plastic, when things are replicated in their millions and break quickly. This is why steampunk is popular, I guess – it represents a time when people were building something to last for centuries with its brutal Victorian-age beauty.” According to Savinkov, steampunk contrasts the modern industry, replaceable and vulgar, that’s why he uses it.
youtube
Nik Faber
As Nik Faber’s work is unique, people have to pay a reasonable price for it, Savinkov supposes. Pricewise, his items basically range from 3,000 to 15,000 rubles ($50 to $253). Some can be more expensive, but it’s difficult to sell them, especially through shops which tend to double or triple the price.
“I’d be happy to expand production,” Savinkov says, but the economic situation is dire and demand in the premium segment is sluggish. So far, the artist keeps on working alone. He compares it to cutting stone: a bit too much force and the whole work is ruined. Any way out? Always stay focused.

Art show and Gloomy weather
The Art Sale and Tour is this weekend in our county. There are about ten different places people can stop in and see artists of all types. I’m set up in a woodworker’s studio, and a found-item artist with steampunk jewelry and lamps and seasonal decorations rounds out our trio. It’s a good mix of stuff, with all different price points.
Tumblr media
Arnold’s woodworking encompassed not only gorgeous custom furniture, but also all the woodwork and window frames in his studio.
Tumblr media
There were not as many people coming through as we hoped. I did sell one painting; a medium-sized sunset. There is always at least one person who visits that is - a Character™. Yesterday it was a small, disheveled, older man wearing shabby clothes. He seemed possibly tipsy or medicated in some way. He walked around our displays and commented rather loudly (but politely). It’s happened before, too - an odd-looking person strolling in and offering not just art commentary, but knowledgeable art commentary. He looked at a set on small paintings of mine and very quickly picked out a personal favorite, and described to me what was working best in the painting. Accurately. Fascinating.
Then he wandered across the room and engaged Arnold. He mentioned owning a piece of Stickley furniture, loving Arts and Crafts style, and launched into a story about seeing pieces by a famous Japanese furniture maker at a mansion in Philadelphia. It was all so strange listening to this story coming out of someone who looked so down-at-the-heels.
Eventually he wandered out again, tottering on his way to the next studio. Life is so random.
I hope to Sell More today.

Delicately Deadly
Sangchengmonth2020 (ao3)
Day 25: Steampunk AU
“This is a terrible idea,” Jiang Cheng repeated as they walked down the cobbled streets, the damp rocks glistening under the gas lamps lining the road.
“So you keep saying,” Nie Huaisang replied. They stopped at the kerb; a carriage passed by, drawn by two mechanical steel horses, steam escaping out of their nostrils and drifting up to be lost in the cloudy evening sky.
“And I’m going to keep saying it until you start listening to me.”
They crossed the road, Jiang Cheng taking care to avoid stepping into the gutter engorged with earlier’s rain.
“Remember what happened with the last invention you tested out for Wei Wuxian?” Jiang Cheng continued, “That toaster machine exploded after the sixth use and completely destroyed our new countertops.”
“But remember how lovely and golden those five first pieces of toast had been,” Nie Huaisang said.
“Remember how that sixth one was burnt to a crisp along with half of our kitchen?”
They turned into a narrow side street and stopped at a red door that desperately needed a new coat of paint.
Jiang Cheng grabbed the handle and opened the door, letting Nie Huaisang in first. The bell over their heads jingled as they walked in.
The shop was dark and cramped, filled to bursting with all manner of curios and contraptions, though, surprisingly, the shelves lacked the usual layer dust.
“The shop’s actually looking cleaner now that Wen Ning’s started working here,” Nie Huaisang commented, looking out at the windows that could now let in some of the street light, having been rid of years’ worth of grime.
The faded black curtain separating them from the backroom was pushed aside and Wen Ning, the new shop assistant, stepped through. Wen Ning looked especially pale under the shop’s poor lighting, the black artificial veins under his skin that could be followed all the way down to his heart made his complexion as white as chalk.
“Good evening Masters Jiang and Nie,” he said in that stuttering manner he always used, bowing slightly.
“Hello, how’s the new heart?” Nie Huaisang asked because he never could keep his nose out of other people’s business.
“It’s doing wonderfully,” Wen Ning said, clutching at his chest where the metal heart was quietly ticking away, “Master Wei replaced some of the valves, and it’s working much better now.”
“That’s good to hear,” Nie Huaisang replied.
“We’re here to pick up the new fire hazard Wei Wuxian made for Nie Huaisang,” Jiang Cheng said, having no patience for small talk.
“Of course,” Wen Ning replied, “Master Wei stayed up all night finalizing it. Please wait a moment.” He bowed again before walking back behind the curtain.
“This is still a terrible idea,” Jiang Cheng asserted once again in a whisper.
Nie Huaisang absent-mindedly shushed him.
Before Jiang Cheng could add more, Wei Wuxian came bouncing in, wearing a big smile on his face and even bigger bags under his eyes. Wen Ning followed close behind.
“Here you go, Nie Huaisang. This one shouldn’t explode,” Wei Wuxian said without bothering to greet them like a normal person.
Much to Nie Huaisang’s delight, Wei Wuxian handed him a fan made of thin sheets of dark green metal. Nie Huaisang’s fingers brushed over the intricate weaving of silver knots climbing up the fan’s guards. It had a simple elegance to it, and even Jiang Cheng had to admit it was beautiful.
“It’s capable of releasing small knives hidden in the folds and is strong enough to deflect pretty much any bullet all the while remaining chic and decorative,” Wei Wuxian said, finishing his sales pitch.
The fan was deceptively delicate just like Nie Huaisang.
With Nie Huaisang sufficiently distracted by his new toy, Jiang Cheng turned to Wei Wuxian.
“You look like shit,” he said.
“It’s good to see you too, Didi,” Wei Wuxian laughed, throwing an arm around Jiang Cheng’s shoulders. Jiang Cheng made sure to look appropriately annoyed, but didn’t try to dislodge him.
“You should take better care of yourself,” Jiang Cheng reprimanded. “If you don’t, I’m going to tell Ajie on you.”
“Jiang Cheng,” Wie Wuxian pouted, “that’s just mean, and after I made your husband a lovely gift and everything”.
“Keep pushing your luck, and I’ll tell Hanguang-Jun as well.”
Wei Wuxian shrieked in indignation, calling him a big bully, but Jiang Cheng knew he’d get a long night’s sleep after this, the prospect of Lan Wangji’s silent disappointment and discrete mothering too much for even Wei Wuxian to bear.
In the hopes of diverting Jiang Cheng’s attention, Wei Wuxian grabbed a little device he’d been working on.
“Look at this,” he said, shoving it into Jiang Cheng’s face.
It wasn’t much to look at, a jumble of wires and pipes that only made sense to Wei Wuxian.
“It’s going to be a music box,” Wei Wuxian explained, “I was thinking of giving it to Lan Zhan. It’s not done yet, but I’m close.” He pressed a button on the contraption.
Something in the machine cracked, smoke billowed out, and instead of music, shrill distorted sounds filled the shop. One of the small pipes snapped off and flew straight for Jiang Cheng’s face.
Before anyone else could think to react, Nie Huaisang, in one swift movement, opened the fan and extended his arm to block the upcoming projectile. The pipe smashed into the green metal, rebounded off of it and whizzed past right into one of the shop windows, shattering it on impact.
Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning were left staring wide-eyed at Nie Huaisang as the glass crashed down onto the ground. Nie Huaisang didn’t notice the looks, too busy inspecting the fan, searching for blemishes on the metal and finding none.
“Cool, it works,” Nie Huaisang smiled, finally looking up. “Can you make me another one in grey, please?” He asked Wei Wuxian, already planning how to accessorize the fan with all his outfits.
Wei Wuxian could only nod, unable to speak.
