Saturday Night Must Be A Turning Point For Joel Embiid
“Embiid vs Jokic On Saturday Night is a watershed moment for 2023 MVP race”

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Brooklyn Nets by 137-134 and although the game lacked the presence of Kevin Durant, the Sixers still looked good, but with several creases that need to be ironed out before we can consider this team playoff ready, and more importantly, conference championship ready.
Tyrese Maxey’s continued development is nothing short of spectacular. He is every bit the 3rd/4th scorer we need on this team, his 27 points, 5 assista and 3 rebounds were as big a contribution as anyobe made in that win, and it’s nice to see him getting some love from the national media for his contributions.
The same cannot be said for the buddy, James Harden. I’ll keep it funky with you in saying that “I’m never happy to watch this guy play”, but his role in our offense can be a useful one, in as far getting to the freethrow line and slowing the pace of the game down, because when you’re at the freethrow line you’re not allowing opponents to score in transition.
James is finding that going to the rim is his best friend right now, 23 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds is decent return, and while he managed 5-10 from 3-point distance, there are issues, bro.
In the 4th quarter though, we almost let go of this game, we were not trying to get Joel in post-up position in the 4th quarter and you know what, it nearly backfired hard.
Putting Joel in the post would help negate some of these dumb turnovers, where James is trying to pass to Joel, even when bro is surrounded by like 4 defenders.

And speaking of Joel, that 4th quarter put on display a lot of the things Hakeem Olajuwon was beefing about.
Joel putting himself in the low post also simplifies things for his teammates.
I don’t know if it’s because bro plays with Harden, or it’s the instructions from Doc Rivers but Joel Embiid’s aversion to going in to the low post needs to be dealt with once and for all..
I can’t understad why he thinks standing in the middle of a zone defense is the best way to break down defenses.
It’s actually annoying to watch “floor general” James Harden commit these crazy turnovers with the goal of getting him to shoot stepback 3′s. We are literally one of the worst 4th quarter teams in the league, and it’s a shot selection issue.
It is what it is.
youtube
On Saturday night, when the 76ers play the Denver Nuggets, it’ll give Joel a chance to rectify some of these percieved slights.
For all intents and purposes, Nikola Jokic has been encroaching on this here “best center in the league” territory for a while now and to be honest, Joel needs to send a message here.
Outperforming Jokic in a game that will have the attention of the national media, and a game that will be the only NBA’s only airing in that time slot, will do wonders to remind the league just whose claim to best big in the league is most credible.
It needs to happen, because you know what hurts Embiid’s case? Not being a starter in this year’s all star game, for the 2nd year in a row!!
youtube
Joel Embiid, who leads the league in scoring at 33.4 points per game, is not going to be a starter in the all-star game, for the 2nd year in a row.
That’s the extent that the Joel Embiid disrespect has gotten to.
Balling out against Jokic won’t be easy, and I doubt the Nuggets will opt to have Jokic guard Embiid 1-on-1 because that will not be advantageous.
The Sixers guarding Nikola Jokic, will be a whole other affair completely, and while I trust Embiid’s athleticism to help negate Jokic, I do have my doubts that our team defense will be able to stop Jokic from diming passes and manipulating the entire floor.
The Nuggets are currently 1st place in a very competetive Western conference, so this will no be an easy feat, while the Sixers can try to carry the confidence of a 6-game winning streak in to this upcoming game.
For Joel, the mandate is clear, play your best game of the season. Period

Trail Blazers vs. Grizzlies final score: 3 things we learned as Portland wins play-in series

Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
The Blazers will now face the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.
The Portland Trail Blazers have officially punched their ticket to the NBA playoffs. The Blazers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 126-122, on Saturday afternoon in the NBA’s first ever play-in series for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Portland will now face the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the first round on Tuesday night.
Portland star Damian Lillard continued his tear after being named bubble MVP earlier in the day. Lillard went off for 31 points and 10 assists on 6-of-15 shooting on the afternoon. Lillard out-dueled Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant, who scored a career-high 35 points and nearly willed Memphis to victory. This was a high scoring game powered by two star point guards that featured some brilliant shooting performances and very little defense.
The Blazers took the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter off an and-one putback from Jusuf Nurkic with about two minutes left. Teammate C.J. McCollum hit a beautiful stepback three-pointer and then a pull-up mid-range jumper over Morant on the next two Portland possessions to secure the win.

— Will Gottlieb (@wontgottlieb) August 15, 2020
Here are three takeaways from a thrilling play-in game.
The Blazers are a different team with Jusuf Nurkic
Nurkic played this game with a heavy heart after announcing his grandmother had died of Covid-19 earlier in the day. Even during a heartbreaking day, Nurkic was absolutely phenomenal for Portland, finishing with 21 points, 21 rebounds, and six assists against the Grizzlies. Portland wouldn’t have won this game without him.
Nurkic missed the entire regular season after suffering a compound fracture in his tibia and fibula last season. Nurkic returned to action in the bubble and has arguably been Portland’s second best player since. He turned in a gutsy performance on Saturday battling Grizzlies center Jonas Valanciunas, who was also outstanding to finish with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists on the night.
Nurkic feels like one of the most underrated players in the league. Portland is so much better with their starting center in the lineup.
Damian Lillard continues to stay on one
Lillard has been the hottest offensive player alive inside the bubble, and he’s not showing signs of slowing down any time soon. Lillard didn’t have to fully carry Portland on his back this time as his teammates stepped up around him. Still, there was no doubt who the best player on the floor was.
Lillard simply has no holes in his scoring package. His pull-up three-point shooting keeps the defense on its toes at all times, and he’s also deadly attacking the rim off cuts. Just watch this poster dunk from late in the fourth quarter:
Dame is such a badass pic.twitter.com/mPBe53pnrR
— Will Gottlieb (@wontgottlieb) August 15, 2020
Lillard is a star in every sense, and the Blazers will need him to continue playing that way to have any chance vs. the powerful Lakers. For as good as Dame is, Portland still faces one big problem looking ahead to the matchup with Los Angles.
Portland will have to defend a lot better to have a prayer vs. the Lakers
The Blazers have been a joy to watch in the bubble because of Lillard’s amazing play, the returns of Nurkic and Zach Collins, and the hot shooting of Gary Trent Jr. There’s no doubt Portland is really fun to watch. Their problem is that their defense leaves a lot to be desired.
Portland lacks the long and athletic two-way wings that every team covets. Instead, they have shot-makers like McCollum and Carmelo Anthony on the wing who have never been known for their defense. It makes every Blazers game an exhilarating ride, but they’re going to have to find a way to defend at least a little bit to have a chance vs. the Lakers.
Portland remains a major underdog, but they do feel more dangerous that a typical No. 8 seed. With the way the Blazers play, it’s going to be a fun series against LeBron James and Lakers either way.

As promised, here is my Stepback Sunday reveal, not two weeks later, but the very next day! Kudos to @somewherelostinbooks who slid in just under the wire and came up with the correct title! This was No Mistress of Mine from Laura Lee Guhrke . Thanks again for @pinkcowlandreads for creating such a fun Saturday event to have fun with! Blurb: After spending his youth as one of the wildest rakes in the ton, Lord Denys Somerton has devoted the past six years to putting his past behind him. He is determined to fulfill his duties, find a suitable wife, and start a family, but that plan changes when Lola Valentine—the red-haired temptress from his past—returns to London, sparking the same irresistible desires that almost ruined his life once before. Lola is a woman with no romantic illusions. She knew love would never be enough for a British lord and an American girl from the wrong side of the tracks. For Denys’s sake, she walked away from him and the glittering life he offered. But when an unexpected inheritance brings her back to London, Lola discovers the passion between them is as hot as ever. Can they vanquish it, or will it burn out of control again and destroy them both? #StepbackSaturday #StepbackSunday #StepbackSundayReveal #RomanceStaGram #Bookstagram #IGBooks #HistoricalRomance #BookWorm #BookBlogger #BookLover #Reader #LauraLeeGuhrke #AVONBooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B-mzaNOAPbd/?igshid=fxtn2hgd9vv9

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports
Road woes continue in Oxford... for a while.
Once again, the road wasn’t easy for Auburn, as they fell into a huge hole and had to dig their way out in a hostile arena. Trailing by 19 early in the second half, the Tigers surged back to force double overtime at the Pavilion in Oxford before somehow coming away with an 83-82 win in double overtime. It’s Auburn’s third-largest comeback ever, and it improves the Tigers’ record to 18-2 overall.
The first half was a study in futility, as Auburn couldn’t find a way to successfully pass, catch, shoot, or rebound. Ole Miss got two wins over the Tigers in 2019 by employing a similar style of basketball, and Bruce Pearl had no answer. It didn’t help that the Rebels seemingly made every late shot clock three and Auburn had two of their worst shooting nights of the season. You would’ve thought we popped in the tape from those games this evening.
Auburn committed 10 turnovers, went 1-12 from three, and hit just 21% of field goals overall, while the Rebels blistered the nets for a 56% total from the field. After going up 2-0 on an Austin Wiley jam, Auburn gave up a 15-0 run to Ole Miss and never got within single digits for the rest of the period. Wiley’s dunk was the only basket for the Tigers until Danjel Purifoy hit a little floater at the 10:00 mark of the half, and Auburn trailed 17-5 at that spot. It took thirteen minutes for Auburn to hit double digits, and they only cracked the 20-point mark when Anfernee McLemore hit the Tigers’ first three with 35 seconds left in the half, but Ole Miss went into the locker room up 37-20.
Things didn’t begin all that well in the second half either, as Ole Miss scored the first basket out of the break, but Auburn went on a 10-0 run to pull within single digits, as McLemore’s second three fell to make it 39-30. Unfortunately, the Rebels answered Auburn’s run with one of their own, pushing the margin back to 17 points at 48-31 on Blake Hinson’s stepback three. Hinson had been doing most of the damage for Ole Miss with 16 points at the 11:49 mark of the second half, as Auburn had limited Breein Tyree for the most part.
Despite the drudgery, Auburn somehow strung together a 12-0 run, buoyed by back to back McLemore threes, and with 10:21, they trailed just 48-43, forcing Ole Miss to take a timeout of their own. At the under-8 timeout, the Rebels had rebuilt the 10-point lead at 54-44 thanks to a few trips to the foul line, and Auburn was in danger of running out of time for the comeback.
With 5:15 left, Samir Doughty forced Breein Tyree to commit his fifth foul and then buried a pair of free throws to cut the lead down to just 63-56, then Isaac Okoro scored a tough rebound and putback, and at the final timeout of the game, Auburn trailed just 63-58 with the ball. Two free throws from Okoro and a transition bucket from Purifoy later, and the deficit was one point with 2:54 left. Finally, J’Von McCormick drove and scored to tie the game at 64 at the two minute mark, and then Samir Doughty did the same to put Auburn on top at 66-64. It was Auburn’s first lead since going up 2-0 to start the game. Devontae Shuler knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game, and Auburn would have one final chance to try and win the game in regulation.
After a frenzied near-disaster, where Ole Miss stole the ball from McCormick but Doughty was able to get his hands on it, Auburn’s last possession ended in a missed three from Okoro, and we headed to overtime.
Danjel Purifoy hit a huge three midway through the period to give the Tigers a 70-69 lead, and then another McLemore triple put Auburn up 74-69 with 1:45 to go. After an Ole Miss dunk, the Rebels seemingly tried to employ the strategy of fouling Auburn, and Doughty banged home two foul shots to put Auburn up by five with 50 seconds, but Devontae Shuler converted a three point play to cut the deficit back down to two for Ole Miss, and then Shuler got fouled on a rebound and got to head to the line for two shots to tie the game with 22 seconds left. Tied at 77, Auburn missed a final shot to win, but the officials said that there were still 2.1 seconds on the clock when Ole Miss called timeout, and the Rebels threw the ball away on their inbound play. Isaac Okoro corraled it, called timeout, but Doughty missed a long three at the buzzer, and we headed to another overtime.
K.J. Buffen put Ole Miss up 82-78 with two straight driving buckets in the second overtime, but an Isaac Okoro drive and foul put the Tigers back up 83-82. After a Samir Doughty miss on Auburn’s final possession, Ole Miss had a chance to win but Blake Hinson’s three glanced off the rim as time expired.
Either way, the first half was more of the same when you look at the issues that Auburn has faced all season. There were better trends heading into the second half, obviously, as the Tigers erased a 19-point deficit. The losses at Alabama and Florida didn’t have any positive to hang onto, but tonight the comeback was indicative of a different attitude on the road after a slow start. We saw once again that Samir Doughty can take over a game, but the consistency needs to be there more since he went scoreless in the first half.
Anfernee McLemore led Auburn with 19 points, including 5 threes, while Doughty, Okoro, Purifoy, and McCormick all finished in double figures as well. Ole Miss was led by Devontae Shuler’s 26 points, which include a 13-18 mark from the free throw line.
Up next for the Tigers it’s the biggest game of the season as Kentucky comes calling on Saturday night. College Gameday will be in attendance Saturday morning at Auburn Arena, and the Tigers will host the Wildcats for the first meeting since the overtime win in the Elite Eight last season. Tipoff comes at 5 pm CST from the Plains.
