Ladies and gentlemen, i am displeased to announce, my job is officially so short-staffed that some weeks I have to spend 20 out of 40 hours in decontamination. Lol. Lmao even.

Anyways just endured one of the most brutal shifts I’ve ever had the misfortune of being stuck with. (10 hour decon shifts should NOT be allowed) And this was the second day this week I got to do it this week! Yay! That’s not supposed to happen btw! My back is wrecked and I am completely emotionally sapped bc decon was so atrocious.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Allow me to explain! I do Sterile Processing for a job, and decontamination is one of the main job processes you can be assigned to in a day. Imagine you’re a dish washer. But you are standing in a 75 degree room with no windows. It’s humid as hell. You are coated head to toe in plastic and rubber. You are shrimp postured over the sink. You are scrubbing. And scrubbing. But it’s not dishes. It’s surgical tools. There are bodily fluids everywhere. There are carts and carts and carts of stuff for you to clean. The operating room keeps giving you more to do. Third party vendors are bringing you more stuff to clean. They say it’s urgent. They need all 30 in the next 3 hours. It’s not possible. But you must do it. Dear god you’re thirsty.

also old people think you can easily acquire any job on earth by virtue of having a bachelor's degree and it is bonkers fucking yonkers. this nice christian lady was trying to convince me i could just go get a hospital lab technician job because i have a "science degree" ma'am i could not even get a response from the local farm store paying minimum wage with this degree. and those lab jobs require specific certifications and degrees of their own which often take years and many thousands of dollars to complete. but yeah maybe i should try to "go work in a lab"

Advantages of Food Irradiation Reduces Foodborne Illnesses: Irradiation is extremely effective in eliminating pathogens that cause serious foodborne illnesses. It can destroy bacteria like E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella and other parasites in meat, poultry, seafood and spices. This significantly improves food safety. Lengthens Shelf Life: By halting microbial growth and arresting ripening/sprouting processes, irradiation extends the refrigerated shelf life of various produce and foods by several weeks. This reduces spoilage losses during storage and transportation. Controls Insect Infestation: Low dose irradiation is approved globally to control insect pests in grains, cereals, dried fruits and herbs. This eliminates quarantine issues and reduces post-harvest losses from insects and insect-borne diseases. Maintains Sensory Qualities: When performed at approved low doses, irradiation does not alter the appearance, texture, aroma or flavor of foods. Irradiated fruits and vegetables look and taste fresh for much longer. Sanitizes Spices: Many spices are irradiated to kill Salmonella, E. coli and other pathogens that may be present naturally or from cross-contamination during processing. This eliminates food safety risks from consuming contaminated spices. Applications of Food Irradiation Fruits & Vegetables: Irradiation preserves the quality and extends shelf life of several delicate produce including mangoes, papayas, potatoes, onions and garlic by 3-4 weeks. It arrests ripening/sprouting to prevent losses during storage and transport. Poultry: The poultry industry uses irradiation to destroy Campylobacter and Salmonella bacteria routinely present in raw chicken and turkey. This significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses from consuming undercooked poultry meat. Spices: Many commonly used herbs and spices like black pepper, cumin, coriander, basil, celery are irradiated to kill pathogens and insects. It ensures the microbial safety of spices. Grains: Low dose irradiation is used globally to control insect pests in grains like wheat, rice and pulses. This eliminates quarantine issues and reduces post-harvest losses during transportation and storage.
