That comfort character meme with two of my CCs, Don Flamenco (Punch-Out!!) and Professor Felix Navarro (Phantom Investigators). Did a Spanish version too because since they're both Hispanic and if they interacted, they'd speak Spanish to each other.

Porcupine Tree @ Mexico City 2022 🇲🇽 🇬🇧
Tumblr media
My. Fucking. God.
Where do I even begin to explain the absolute bliss I felt during the 3 hour long show????
Being Porcupine Tree my absolute favorite band ever and being a big Steven Wilson fangirl, in no way I was gonna miss this show. The whole day was an adventure, though. Sadly, my girlfriend had an accident around 5 am that day and was unable to go to the concert. I went to take care of her the whole afternoon and she told me to give her ticket to someone else. By the evening, her brothers were taking care of her and knowing she was safe, resting and feeling a little better but not enough to leave home, after talking about the situation, I left to the concert. (She's even better by the time of this post, thankfully.)
Arriving somewhere but not here at the venue, I waited for some friends that I told to reunite with me at the entrance, and I met at least ten other friends that I didn't expect to see there, from classmates to teachers and fellow musicians. It felt nice to know more people appreciate this band as much as I do (almost).
I entered the venue a little late, mostly because I was waiting for my friends before going into the Pepsi Center auditorium together, so I wasn't in place to enjoy properly one of my favorite songs from them: Blackest Eyes. I was listening to it as I was walking to my table in the VIP Lounge section, almost at the very front. (I'll never be able to thank my godfather enough for that). Said table was next to a metal railing spliting the general section from this one, where I spent the whole concert in monke mode shaking it, shouting and waving at my favorite ensemble.
After Blackest Eyes ended, Steven took the microphone to formally introduce the show and mentioned they'd play the whole Closure/Continuation album just before Harridan began sounding. That song to me is already destined to be a classic of the band. Such a fucking brilliant comeback, my gaaaaaaaaaawd 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I'm not gonna describe the events song by song, though. You should know, however, that there is a tradition here in Mexico that involves throwing a plushie of the mascot from a popular national pharmacy franchise called "Dr. Simi" into the stage. At a certain point of the concert, one of those flew right into the tour's bassist Nate Navarro, so, after that song ended, Steven asked for more plushies to be thrown at them. Only one more Simi, a porcupine and a mexican flag made it there, to which Steven showed a little comical disappointment.
In general we all noticed Steven somewhat quirky and in a very good mood. The whole band was, in fact. Even Barbieri's cheeks rose one millimeter at one point of the night. Steven joked about having to make an intermission because of them being old. Also, at some other point, he asked the crowd to shout "Happy Birthday Yali" while recording it into his cellphone to show the video afterwards to his adoptive daughter. What a sweet, heartwarming detail 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
The songs they played outside of C/C were Even Less, Drown With Me and Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled (not in that order). Love those songs, but when the feels really started to kick in was when Fear Of A Blank Planet began. That album saved my life from eternal mysery of a poor career choice. It felt very intimate.
When I really lost it was with Anesthetize. As soon as I began hearing the guitar intro I couldn't contain myself and I started crying a fucking river. Ugly face, runny nose, shouting the lyrics with no mistakes and headbanging as hard as I fucking could. That song means the absolute world to me. One of my friends had to hug my from how aggressively I was sobbing. I remember that moment and I want to start crying as hard again. I even shouted from the top of my lungs "TE AMO STEVEN" like a K-pop stan. I'm a big dummy for him, I swear.
They ended the show after "playing adult peek-a-boo" with Collapse The Light and Trains, and as if it had been only 30 minutes, the concert was over. Made some impulsive t-shirt purchasing after that and I got an In Absentia one and a FOABP that doesn't fucking fit me because I couldn't fucking read the tag attached to it.
So, yeah. It was a lifetime experience that I am extremely thankful to have lived and shared with my friends, and a memory I'll carry dearly until the day I die. I want to cry again. Hug me, please.

📽️ Uptown Girls (2003)
Have you ever watched a movie when you were young, and you can remember snippets of it but never the whole thing or the name of it, and you spend years wondering what the movie was until you finally find it, and it’s nothing like what you thought you remembered even though you’re sure it’s the right movie? Yeah, that was this movie for me. I did not remember Brittany Murphy’s character being so annoyingly immature. And Dakota Fanning’s character is a total brat. Even though both of those character traits are main parts of the movie, and they do get better at the end, they’re still tough to sit through. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the movie. It ends up being very cute, and both characters help each other. The teacups scene is especially touching. I would probably watch it again.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (upper female back and side nudity, some sexual content with the adult lead)
Language: 3/10 (the little girl flips people off several times, a lot of God’s name)
Violence: 2/10 (comedic fighting, some slaps/hits/kicks)
Overall rating: 6/10

14 Essential-Listening Taylor Hawkins Tunes
… that aren’t “Cold Day in the Sun”!
1. Pitiful (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders)
One of his most emotionally raw tracks. I love the strange chords he used on the acoustic guitar to convey the somber depiction of guilt and shame associated with drug addiction described in the lyrics. This is a really painful song to listen to, but it’s beautiful.
2. The Path We’re On (Nighttime Boogie Association)
Matt Cameron and Taylor share vocal duties on this tune (Taylor sings the verses, Matt sings the choruses). Their voices together are pure heaven! Also features Melvins’ Buzz Osbourne snd Steven McDonald on guitar & bass. This group unfortunately only put out 2 songs during the pandemic, but they’re a magical 2.
3. I Could Be Somebody Else (NHC)
Psychedelic in every aspect of that word, this one is best experienced cranked with headphones. Trippy as hell. Dave Navarro was right when he said Taylor is a mind-blowing lyricist and singer. Another emotionally raw tune, when he said one of NHC’s songs makes him feel naked, I think he was referring to this one.
4. Running In Place (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders)
This song takes you on a journey. It eases you in, then crescendos into classic prog-influenced chaos before it turns to a stream of pretty guitar work and layered vocals as it drops you back off. Taylor said this one was something he wrote talking to himself, trying to bring himself back down to earth and not go crazy. “The Teacher” by Foo Fighters almost certainly took inspiration from this song - the breakdown is nearly identical, and the “…say goodbye” outro is very similar.
5. Too Much for My Own Good (Phil X & the Drills)
This song by Phil X features Taylor on the drums. This is such a fun rock & roll tune that will definitely be stuck in your head for days but you won’t be mad about it. Every person I’ve ever played this to has loved it!! PS- you’ve definitely heard Phil X before, his discography as a studio musician is wild.
6. You Drive Me Insane (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattails Riders)
I love the trippy riff and the vocals in this song, it’s a California rock & roll vibe and it’s one of my top favorites of his. One of his sexier tunes he said was written about Mrs. Alison Hawkins.
7. Southern Belles
No group credited as he played every instrument and sang this one! (I think the bass is either Chris Chaney or Nate Mendel, but I couldn’t find out for sure). This is a heavy-hitting, super catchy one about his southern family roots. Really under-appreciated track from the same EP that gave us “Range Rover Bitch”.
8. Never Enough (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)
Taylor’s vocal range doesn’t get talked about enough… The cathartic way he belts his heart out at the end of this song gets me every single time. His voice was so beautiful. Another of that emotionally raw side of his music.
9. It’s Ok Now (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)
Another earworm, this one’s rhythm is bound to make you move. His voice is pure rock and roll. I think you can really hear how much his songwriting impacted the Foo Fighters’ music on this album, even though many people think Dave told everyone what to play…when you really listen, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This song feels like summer sunshine to me.
10. Guess I’ll Go Away (Edgar Winter)
Taylor on vocals for “Brother Johnny”, a tribute to Johnny Winter album, this was one of the last things he did musically. He SLAYED that shit. He sounds so good. Rock and fucking roll.
11. Louise (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)
I have no idea how he played that drumbeat and sang this song at the same time. Mind boggling. This song is so unique and so catchy, I don’t get why it wasn’t a hit. The rhythm section is my favorite part of the whole thing, Taylor and Chris Chaney locked in together SO well. It’s no wonder they played together from the Alanis days all the way up to him putting the ‘C’ in NHC.
12. Fearless (NHC)
This is a Pink Floyd cover…But it’s an amazing one! It’s groovy and trippy and they’re so locked in together, they were made to play music with each other. NHC unfortunately has a very small discography, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have selected a cover…but maybe I would’ve anyway, this one is just so good!
13. You’re No Good at Life No More (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)
Taylor and Dave Grohl split the vocals on this one and it’s such a wild ride. You can really hear his Queen influence throughout this album… so much so that he manifested Roger Taylor’s appearance on the last track! D&T’s voices together are magic as you hear on “Rope” by Foo Fighters and their cover of “Come Together”, I always wish they sang together more often.
14. Perfect Day
Only a minute long, this beautiful song is just Taylor and his guitar. A sweet reminder he wrote for Mrs. Hawkins that his love is always with her no matter where he goes. I’m sure she treasures this one. There’s so much love in it.

Lighthizer “frequently” brought up currency devaluation during Trump’s first term, said one former administration official with knowledge of the discussions, as did Trump economic adviser Peter Navarro. But they faced opposition from Wall Street-aligned officials like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and former National Economic Council Chair Gary Cohn, and the idea never got off the ground. Trump even reportedly squashed a dollar devaluation proposal from Navarro during a White House meeting, POLITICO reported in 2019. “Lighthizer brought that up all the time becauvse he felt like tariffs weren’t enough to achieve the objective” of rebalancing trade with the rest of the world, said one of the former Trump administration officials. “Mnuchin didn’t want to do it.” Mnuchin is not alone. Wall Street banks and large U.S. retailers would also oppose efforts to weaken the U.S. dollar, arguing it would hurt U.S. consumers and drive up already problematic inflation. Other corporate actors worry about the ripple effects if the U.S. government moves into currency markets aggressively, concerned it could spark a global trade conflict.
Folks there are some people in our government, very bad people who says "The dollar is worth too much, we need to make it worth less." Not me though, I know the dollar should be worth more, and if you elect me president the dollar will be worth more than ever before. Some people don't think it's possible, they say "you can't do that" but I know, I know that the dollar can be worth more, much more.

My Favorite Musicals (#2)
Another favorite is Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman’s A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. I’ll put it number 2 on my list, but I really don’t quantify them like that. For organizational purposes it’s number 2.
Tumblr media
I knew nothing of this show before the performance of “I’ve Decided to Marry You” on the Tony’s. That was the best advertisement this show could have and the only one I really needed. It’s really the one I had. I have one friend reach out after having seen it and recommend it to me. It became a “let’s go see it” with my wife. We had already only been to Broadway together once, so this was the second time I took her to NYC. We loved it. A few months later, we heard it was closing, and we went again-catching it in the final two weeks. We saw it on Tour in Baltimore and we almost saw it again. (That's not my wife with Jefferson Mays, just that's the best pic we had of him. That IS me with Bryce Pinkham.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What made this show sing to me was the interplay with the audience. I love shows that find the space between presentational and representational and exploit it in interesting ways. The narration aspect of the “book,” and Monty’s winks towards the audience break the fourth wall in ways that were delightful. The music box aspect of the set and the less than realistic props and settings…and of course this was this guy playing 11 different characters! The music was funny and accessible. It was just a fun treat. (Image Below: The Broadway set with about a week to closing, after the show, the ghostlight is on.)
Tumblr media
It immediately found its way onto my list of shows to direct. The small cast and stylized somewhat unit set really made it fit into my wheelhouse for directing.
I used “I Don’t Understand the Poor” as my audition song for that director in 2017 for the role of Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. I got that part. ( Image Below: Show art from the 2022 production of Gentlemen's Guide that I was part of.)
Tumblr media
When it did come up in my area for a production, the timing was bad. I wasn’t even going to audition. I’m not a singer and with only two male leads I only had a shot at ensemble, and with a small ensemble, I’d be doing a lot of singing. It really wasn’t something I could do. The audition turn-out was low, so I got prodded into auditioning by the choreographer.
I decided to audition for Miss Shingle because they didn’t have any older women. Mind you, I’m not an older woman, but she doesn’t sing that much, and I could handle her singing as character. Character singing is something I can do. I spent my afternoon preparing Wouldn’t It Be Loverly from My Fair Lady. I felt good, but there were six older women. I still did my piece as planned…and that led to me being heavily read as the D’ysquith family. My choreographer friend told me that I almost go it…but it went to a different guy.
Tumblr media
I was cast as part of the company and was able to play a variety of roles including the Inspector who sings in That Horrible Woman, which is one of my favorite songs from the piece.
Our production of Gentlemen’s Guide sold out and was well received. I cracked up laughing one night as one of the Ancestral Portraits, one of the tour group whispered something rather inappropriate to me as he passed and I just couldn’t control myself. It caused a lot of laughter. We all lived to perform another day.
Tumblr media
I joke about being an accidental victim of Monty Navarro because I pretended to eat something off the table as a servant, “got sick”, walked off the stage and then never appeared again. It was a little thing and since the director was not in tune with the comedy of the show I assumed it would get cut (as he did with most of the humor in the show,) but he didn’t say anything (probably didn’t notice we suspect.) It’s the little things.
Tumblr media
It took me a while to listen to it again after the production, but it’s back in my rotation now.
Favorite Song: Foolish to Think. -Might use that for an audition someday.
Favorite #4: Jekyll and Hyde
Favorite #3: Jane Eyre
Favorite #2: A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder
Favorite #1: Assassins
