We feel so incredibly privileged to be able to share this fundamental love story around the nation, and to have had such a vocal and receptive support system on our #SAWTheMusical National Tour opening night, last night. Thank you to all those involved who have worked so incredibly hard to make this product the most daring, bold, humorous, heartfelt, and stellar project it can possibly be. And thank you to the #SAW creators and crew for gracing us with their presence and love during the evening. It meant more than we can put into words. We sawed it through together and cannot wait to continue sawing in new places for new people who have yet to witness this bittersweet parody musical!

Noel Gruber was known for a lot of things in Uranium. Mainly the 7th grade winter play, of course, but in a town with a population that could fill a single neighborhood, people seldom forgot a single fact about you.

Fact. Noel Gruber played with his mothers clothes and makeup well into middle school, and only realized he was supposed to be ashamed of it at age 8, when another little boy punched him in the nose.

Fact. Noel Gruber, ages 6-9, used to convince kids to play 'Ophelia', where they would all lay face down in the community swimming pool. He is still banned from said community pool at age 17.

Fact. Noel Gruber, at least once a week, is seen riding the bus around town. He'll stay on for three full loops, eventually getting off at the same stop he got on.

Shows I saw in 2023, Part 10: Swept Away

First time at DC’s Arena Stage to catch the new Avett Brothers musical that’s trying to get to Broadway. I went in with zero knowledge of the show until I was getting in my seat and my friend, who had read a WaPo article about it mentioned something slightly, well, unappetizing that takes place. Let’s just say that shipwrecked sailors have to resort to desperate measures to survive.

I enjoyed it. The story is transporting and takes the audience on an emotional journey. The audience was definitely into it and there are some numbers in the first half (note: there’s no intermission, but there’s a clear break in the show) where I could see a whole theater clapping and stomping their feet.

I don’t normally like jukebox musicals because I think many are made just to be cash cows and not good art. This is technically a jukebox musical but it’s definitely not about “hey listen to Avett Brothers music!” In fact if you came to be transported on the same emotional wavelength that Avett music normally does, you’ll probably be disappointed. But if you come with an open mind of just wanting to see good art, you will not be disappointed.

It is quite dark, but the music is good, the set design is stunning, and the cast is excellent. I hope this makes it (esp considering that there are several Not Good shows on Broadway right now that just need to go, as well as empty theaters). If you can get to DC, I rec. going before its limited run ends.

I am a director who leads a non-profit gaggle of actors, we’re currently piecing together a musical from scratch. i left the decision of our summer musical in my cast and crew’s hands. that put Noel in his current predicament; celebrating his 19th birthday with a bottle of wine he officially bought legally from a local gas station, and drinking it in a public park at 10pm. It was fucking freezing out; it had been 12°c in the heat of the day, and had dipped to 3°c with the setting of the sun. But he'd be damned if he spent the birthday he'd been building up all of highschool inside with his mom.

Anyone he would've celebrated with was long gone by now.
