Street of Crocodiles by the Brothers Quay
The Quays' masterpiece is adapted from a short story by Polish writer Bruno Schulz. A museum keeper spits into an ancient peep-show machine, plunging the viewer into a nightmarish netherworld of bizarre puppet rituals among dirt and grime.

tw: disturbing imagery, spit.
Street of Crocodiles by the brothers Quay, HT @elizbathplaid who linked pictures in her flickr archives.
Full short story by Bruno Schultz (starting on page 99) available to borrow at the internet archive
As with Maska, the other short film in stop-motion by the Quay brothers, I found this gave a vibe and strong feelings but not really the bulk of the story. I found that it enhanced the viewing to know the story but also enhanced the story to have seen the moody stop-motion.
It’s the strangest feeling to trace back the references to the original: The Cell was inspired by the NIN music videos which were inspired by this. The camera movements were caught me the most off guard, it has an insectoid, alien feeling to it.
