Part XVI - But Human's Can't Magic
Something that absolutely infuriates me.
Most people think they do it because Tolkien did it. The reason Tolkien did it is that he wanted a low fantasy setting. None of the main races can use magic, and most of the magic in the world is leftover from the time of it's creation, or in the realm of literal angels, or damn-near close.
But, if it wasn't Tolkien who said Humans can't use magic, where did we get it from, the Bible?
No. The Catholic put a lot of effort into rent-seeking your salvation, and so says magic is not real. Protestants were the ones running Witch Hunts. The Bible itself says magic is real. The reason Genies are slaves kept in lamps is that King Solomon had such great magic power, (derived from his great wisdom), that he was able to make the incredible feat of enslaving them. He's the reason why the Seal of Solomon is often used in the iconography of magic circles.
The reason why using magic is bad is that the best way to learn it is by summoning and detaining demons. According to occultism. The summoning of demons is the bad part, not the magic part.
So, why do we think Humans can't use magic?
D&D. They honestly had no idea what they were doing, but they had no idea what they were doing because no one had ever done anything like it before. My problem with D&D is that they have never - bothered - to fix the problems.
The big problem they had is what while they use Northern European-inspired classes, they wanted to decouple them from any mythology to make them more extensible. And this is why the world building of anything D&D/Pathfinder is so absolutely terrible.
In pretty much every - other - fantasy setting, magic is something anyone with the aptitude can use. Why? BECAUSE IT'S FUN! BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK AM I IN A FANTASY SETTING IF I CAN'T USE MAGIC?
Okay, yes, you can have one person in the party do all of the magic things, sure, that works. But, if you can't use magic, and your enemies can't use magic, then why are we in a fantasy setting?
And this is a serious question you have to ask yourself. You have to decide how low or high fantasy your fantasy setting is, but if you strip out all of the magic, except one magic MacGuffin, then why are you even bothering making it a fantasy setting. Even Beowulf has multiple magic swords, and they were created by Humans, (swords EARNED their names, they were not given them).
Case in point: Spice & Wolf. Is Spice & Wolf a fantasy setting, or simply a medieval story? The original anime had like 2 magic beings, and everything else was entirely mundane. And while Spice & Wolf doesn't use real-world locations, it reads like some piece of folklore some medieval monk wrote down, and took the effort to research economics before he did.
But, you don't have to think too deeply about it. The reason might be because you want to fight a skeleton army.
This isn't to insult Spice & Wolf, as it's a great anime. But, if Magic is so hard to use it never actually appears in the setting, then why are you even making a fantasy story? If you want to write a Human / Werewolf / (other) love triangle, then just put a shirtless werewolf on the front cover and write the story you want to write.
Okay, but D&D makes magic something that heroes can use, because they are heroes?
And that just creates false expectancy. Your character didn't became an epic hero because of epic training, devious guile, challenging challenges, or even a skillful mentor, but because they are the protagonist. This might sound like the average Isekai, but Isekai actually justifies the Protagonist having his powers because a god - quite literally - blessed him. Just like in Grecian Heroic Myth, most of the Grecian heroes were either demigods, or blessed by the gods.
D&D gives the heroes power because they can use the PC rules instead of the NPC rules.
You Want to Make a Fantasy World: Part I - Magick
The first thing you need to decide when making a fantasy world is how magick works.
That might seem heady, but let's go over what you have to decide:
Who can use magick.
How do they use magick.
And how powerful can magick get.
Do you want 9th level magick, that can rip a giant hole in the world and summon unkillable monsters?
Because, honestly, you don't need it.
Can 9th level magick only be used by decrepid old wizards with one foot in their grave? Only it be used by chosen heroes? Only be by inhuman things, like Dragons and Daemons and Liches?
Low level but common magick can have a huge effect on the setting. Being able to light a fire can allow you to save the time and effort it takes to start a fire. Heating a rock can be used to heat a home, or even a bath, giving the equivalent of modern sanitation. Hand washing, bathing, and toilets have done the most for Human longevity. Can you go to a priest, give him a penny, and have him cure your cancer?
Sure, curing cancer isn't as cool as curing sword wounds, but the medical effects it can have on longevity are staggering.
Maybe magic is something that can only be done by a minority of the population, that dedicate themselves to the study.
None of them are wrong answers, so long as they are CONSISTENT.
If magickal ability depends on your bloodline, then someone, somewhere is going to think it's a good idea to selectively breed mages to keep the magics strong. The mages might become the noble classes, they might form their own class, which they breed endogenously, like Hindus.
If only inhuman things can cast upper level magick, and you see a seemingly ordinary Human cast that kind of magick, then guess what? He's not actually an ordinary Human.
Does magick need a physical catalyst? Does it consume reagents? How rare are these reagents? Do they come in one of a few types, or is every twig of berries a reagent for a different spell? Maybe upper level spells require expensive reagents, and that's the limiting factor? Maybe these spells use too much mana, and therefore can only be done by places of power?
Does teleportation require Line of Sight? Can you open long-range portals only if you have local knowledge? Can you target places of power from a distance?
We start with the simple, coarse questions, and get to the finer ones later on. When? When you come up with a good idea for how it works? Or, honestly, when you need to use it. It's perfectly fine to wait until the characters need/want to teleport to decide how it functions.
Another way to limit spells if by giving the heroes a rare magickal item. Why can they use portals?, because they have the Staff of the Herald. Why do they have the staff of the herald?
Given by someone important.
Monster loot.
They found it in an old, abandoned building.
They earned it by accomplishing some feat, or level of training.
Again, all you have to decide is how rare the item is, and maybe if you need some sort of innate/trained ability to use it.
#how I write#magic II#like magic#but it uses a level 2 slot#it does not have increased casting time because you prepared the spell ahead of time

Summoning Circle XVI
This is a continuation of Summoning Circle. You can find all other IkeSen works of mine here. NOTE: Tagging @katriniac at her request.
They shoved back the furniture in the living room and prepared another circle. Sasuke prepped instruments she didn’t even know the names of around the room. Some whirred, some beeped, some made scrawling measurements like a seismograph. He monitored them all ceaselessly for a week before clapping his hands together.
“Good news. We might not even need a machine.”
“How do you figure that?” She asked, propping herself up between two of them on the couch.
“Well, the problem is from the other side. Ergo, we’d need to get through to the other side to block the holes. And I think--” He paused, contemplating his words. “I think it’s a matter of reverse engineering the doorway you made in the first place to place a barrier.”
She narrowed her eyes at him, her brain nigh on meltdown mode. “English please.”
“Remember your sigil you drew to summon them in the first place?” Sasuke flipped the book open, teasing his fingers between the pages. “It’s like an algebra problem.”
“Fuck, Sasuke. The whole reason we’re in this mess is because I’m shit at math.”
He half-smiled, shoving his glasses back up his nose. “Alright. A better analogy. Think of each place in the universe was a door. Naturally, to get in a door, you need a key.”
“Yeah. Sure.”
“So, for instance, to ‘assemble’ the key to our having space travel, we had to map out the lock. The components involved velocity, calculating orbits, etcetera, but in the end it was a key nonetheless.” He tapped the pages to the book. “And this book details keys to other doors.”
She paused. “So basically what you’re saying is the circle is the door, we just have to figure out the components to get us in there. Like a password.”
“Exactly like a password.”
“And once we’re in there...” The details laid bare out before her like the mythical yellow brick road. “Then we block the route back?”
“It’ll take a little doing. But that’s the idea. It’s just a matter of assembling the component to create the block. And in the meantime, we’d have the assistance of Mitsuhide and Mitsunari on the other side.”
It wasn’t a perfect idea, but it was an idea, and it was better than any she had to boot. Besides. Sasuke had never, ever let her down before. Suddenly overwhelmed by the grace of him, she leapt to his side and crushed him in a hug.
“Sasuke, you’re the very best friend in the whole goddamn universe.”
He pet her back gently. “This is as much a fun scientific adventure for me as it is helping you... but you’re welcome.”
Mitsunari stood in the eye of the circling storm.
A thousand dreams swirled around him. He extended a finger and watched them ripple around him, fragments of unconscious thoughts flowing through his mind. Oh, he was so, so hungry for them, so tempted to delve in and devour them whole for their knowledge. But he was hunting first and foremost. That stayed him. Faster and faster the tide turned around him. He shut his purple eyes and focused to the full stretch of his will, feeling the ravenous desire in him fight for control.
But not today.
He felt the dream and latched on, pulling it out of the slipping current and laying it bare before him. There. She dreamed, and his heart screamed and pulled from his chest, threatening mutiny.
She dreamed of them.
There they were--himself and Mitsuhide, standing in her kitchen, fumbling over sandwiches. The contents made no sense, and neither did the fact that all the furniture was floating--but nevermind that. Dream logic had a way of creeping in. He absorbed himself in the details of her.
He watched her hands reaching for them, the way she always fell just out of reach. The kitchen drifted farther and farther away until it was only a lonely blip, the infinite hallway extending before her. Mitsunari wanted so badly for Dream-Him to reach out, take her, grab her! But no. He could only stand arrested as at last, the whole apartment slipped into blackness, the shattering of a mirror sprinkling through her mind.
“There you are.”
Mitsunari shut his eyes and tried not to feel angry at Mitsuhide. “Did we do the right thing?”
The silver-haired demon stepped to his side and stared down at the dream. It turned to a horror so easily. Now she dreamed of blood sprinkled over the vanity, fragments of a vampire skull scattered over her feet.
“Yes,” Mitsuhide murmured, his voice shaking. “We did.”
“It doesn’t feel like the right thing.”
“The right thing often doesn’t.”
Mitsunari sighed. “I suppose coming from you, that means something. You’re the king of doing the right thing in the worst ways.”
The ghost of an amused smile played over Mitsuhide’s lips, but he said nothing. Instead he extended his hand toward his partner. “You can’t stand here in the stream forever.”
“I’m not.”
“You’re starved. You never made the trade I made. You can’t be away from your books this long.”
“I know,” Mitsunari answered miserably. “I know. But I keep coming back here.”
Nothing other than the rush of swirling dreams around them answered. At last, Mitsuhide sighed. “Whatever you’re looking for, I can stand guard for now. She wouldn’t want you to do this to yourself.”
A bitter laugh escaped him. “She wouldn’t want a lot of things that have happened.”
“No. You’re right. She wouldn’t have.”
She took her cat to stay with another friend for a while. After all, whenever they broke through to Purgatory, Theodora couldn’t go without food and water. Kissing her pet a thousand times on the head, she finally resolved herself to the unknown.
Both she and Sasuke threw themselves into working long hours every week, extending their paychecks as far as they could manage to accommodate an unknown length of time away from their respective bills and responsibilities. Each night, they dragged themselves back to the apartment and slaved over the books late into the night. Sasuke pinned an intricate system of notes onto her wall. One night she pointed out it looked like a meme and he struck the same pose, sending them into a several-minute long fit of giggles.
And at last--at last!--they had something.
“Holy shit.” Sasuke announced one midnight. “I think I got it.”
She pried herself from her notes to stare blearily at him. “What?”
“I’ve got it.” And he scrambled for chalk, etching the runes into the floor one at a time. Each of them pulsed and warped in tandem, shimmering a bright red through the apartment until a faint light pooled in the center. Sasuke inhaled deeply. “I haven’t set the last symbol, but when we do...”
“Oh my god.” She slammed the book shut, scrabbling over to him. “Okay. Okay okay. Okay!”
“We need to get supplies.” He nodded resolutely, and suddenly the two of them were scrabbling around the room. “Like a can of beans!”
A moment. She stopped and stared at him. “A... can of beans? Like, a singular can?”
Sasuke, astrophysicist and genius, stopped dead in his tracks, eyes glazed. “I... yes. We probably need more than one.”
“Sleep deprivation getting you there?”
“I’d be absolutely thrilled if we could just chalk it up to that.”
They crashed that night in the living room, and by the next morning, they both sent off emails to their respective employers about an unplanned, long-term absence from work. Shuffling their backpacks together, they checked it for the millionth time.
“A compass won’t be any use there,” Sasuke mumbled. “Do you know how to orient us once we’re in?”
“Not a single fucking clue, if I’m honest. I might be able to get us to the hot springs... if it dumps us out in the correct place.”
“Not likely, then.” But he smiled anyway, cranking one of his ten wind-up cameras he’d somehow procured. “This will be very exciting.”
“And scary. We need to be on our guard.”
“Of course. But the scientific opportunity here is limitless.”
Count on Sasuke to make it fun. Shaking out her nerves, she nodded at him. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah. Let’s do this. Beam me up, Scotty.”
He gave her the usual muted smile and scrawled out the appropriate signs. Just as before, the whole living room began to swim with ruby light. Affixing the last piece, they stepped back as a massive gate appeared before them--and just beyond, a thick, purple haze.
She exhaled hard and took Sasuke’s hand. “Alright.”
He squeezed it reassuringly. Together, they stepped through, and the gate closed behind them.
“My friend?”
The demon frowned from his place atop a cushioned chair, but answered anyway. “Yes, Shingen?”
Smirking, the redheaded demon flopped into a matching one across from him, adjusting his red and gold robes. “I don’t suppose you’re in a mood for a patrol?”
Those mismatched eyes flicked open with interest. “Is it a vampire incursion? Perhaps some of those hungering spirits again?”
“No, no no, Kenshin, my friend. Nothing that we need to attack, exactly.”
“Oh.” Kenshin’s face soured immediately. “Then I’m not interested.”
“Come now! It’ll be fascinating.” Shingen chuckled, leaning in. “I heard the most interesting report. We have some interlopers out here.”
“If I can’t kill them, then I don’t know what you want from me.”
“I’m certain you’ll find them of interest.” The demon grinned broad, his horns like an ibex shimmering into view. “Because, my friend, they’re humans.”

Our Lady of Fatima
May 13 is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. She appeared six times to Lucia, 9, and her cousins Francisco, 8, and his sister Jacinta, 6, between May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917.
The story of Fatima begins in 1916, when, against the backdrop of the First World War which had introduced Europe to the most horrific and powerful forms of warfare yet seen, and a year before the Communist revolution would plunge Russia and later Eastern Europe into six decades of oppression under militant atheistic governments, a resplendent figure appeared to the three children who were in the field tending the family sheep. “I am the Angel of Peace,” said the figure, who appeared to them two more times that year exhorting them to accept the sufferings that the Lord allowed them to undergo as an act of reparation for the sins which offend Him, and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners.
Then, on the 13th day of the month of Our Lady, May 1917, an apparition of ‘a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun’ presented itself to the three children saying “Please don’t be afraid of me, I’m not going to harm you.” Lucia asked her where she came from and she responded, “I come from Heaven.” The woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand. The woman asked them to pray and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity and to “say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.”
She also revealed that the children would suffer, especially from the unbelief of their friends and families, and that the two younger children, Francisco and Jacinta would be taken to Heaven very soon but Lucia would live longer in order to spread her message and devotion to the Immaculate Heart.
In the last apparition the woman revealed her name in response to Lucia’s question: “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”
That same day, 70,000 people had turned out to witness the apparition, following a promise by the woman that she would show the people that the apparitions were true. They saw the sun make three circles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a manner which left no doubt in their minds about the veracity of the apparitions. By 1930 the Bishop had approved of the apparitions and they have been approved by the Church as authentic.
The messages Our Lady imparted during the apparitions to the children concerned the violent trials that would afflict the world by means of war, starvation, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father in the twentieth century if the world did not make reparation for sins. She exhorted the Church to pray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peace may come upon the world, and that the trials may be averted.
Our Lady of Fatima revealed three prophetic “secrets,” the first two of which were revealed earlier and refer to the vision of hell and the souls languishing there, the request for an ardent devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finally the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism. The third “secret” was not revealed until the year 2000, and referred to the persecutions that humanity would undergo in the last century: “The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated'”. The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been interpreted to include the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13, the 64th anniversary of the apparitions. The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady: “... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.”
What is the central meaning of the message of Fatima? Nothing different from what the Church has always taught: it is, as Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVI, has put it, “the exhortation to prayer as the path of “salvation for souls” and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.”
Perhaps the most well known utterance of the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was her confident decalaration that “My Immaculate Heart will triumph”. Cardinal Ratzinger has interpreted this utterance as follows: “The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time. The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: “In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise.

what's the history behind that photo
I largely answered in the post right before this one, which I saw only afterwards, sorry, but I can add this for summary: our very liberal President, who doesn't really believe in democracy, has been working very hard to bring about the total privatisation of French economy, and in a very thatcherian move, considering there's 'no alternative', isn't letting his own people getting in the way of his feverish dreams of a free global market and zero public expenses.
90% of French press is owned by a dozen of oligarchs (including Bernard Arnault, richest man in the world, and his tech billionaire son-in-law Xavier Niel), most of whom supported President Macron's 2017 campaign, so the mainstream media aren't 'only' reluctant to give a platform to the opposition, they're plainly obfuscating the truth, when they're not downright lying about the social movement, the state of the strike and, glaringly, the unjustifiable violence of the French government against the nation.
So, yes, usually the police charges randomly into the crowd during peaceful protests, they inundate everyone in tear gas that lasts for hours (in fact, days; French police use exceptionally strong gases with high-level toxicity, and occasionally throw a canister or two down the stairs to a tube station) and go up into buildings' ventilation systems so even non-protesters may enjoy, and they often arrest people to confiscate protection such as surgical masks, bike helmets, or saline solution for irritated eyes... People have been fined for wearing a high-visibility vest or because policemen suspected they intended to join a protest; as a matter of fact, if they can prove that a person intended to 'knowingly join a group planning for degradations, violences or destructions' (so if someone is arrested during a demonstration where some damage was done), one may be thrown in jail for a year with €15000 to pay (which is over a year of salary for people working full-time at a minimum wage...).
Police perform random acts of cruelty, such as, recently, an infamous (it did circulate in mainstream circles for once) trip to a young woman in Toulouse, who was walking with her hands raised in fear and fell hard on her face. They club down unarmed people and then beat up the people who try to help them up. The other day a college student had to receive his summons to court as the medics were taking him away on a gurney to tend to his head trauma.
Two weeks ago, they murdered Cédric Chouviat. He was a delivery man in Paris who got arrested on his scooter for telephoning. It is claimed he was rude to the policemen: they manhandled him off his vehicle, threw him onto the pavement, sat on his back immobilising him until he turned blue and passed out, his larynx mysteriously broken. He died 48 hours later in the hospital, as his five children waited at home for their mother Doria to return with news. The authorities immediately declared that Cédric died of a heart attack, but for once the autopsy report didn't have time to disappear and his family soon had confirmation of how he died. He wasn't the first one, but it particularly stings to see how calm and brave his 19-year-old daughter has to be when she asks that history would not be repeated.
One of these days the population might not be so compliant anymore. Already, people are pushing through the fear more and more, trying their best to defend one another. One of these days, the would-be king of France might try to protect his head by doing more than sending his attack dogs onto the crowds. Then again, one of the slogans recently heard in the protests went, Louis XVI! Louis XVI! We beheaded him! Macron! Macron! We may do it again! One of these days...

I do not understand sleep, but I will someday soon: an anthology of lovers
II.
I had asked you to listen to a song with me.
You found me on my bed, nestled like a lamb nursling
and
You held me in both arms, letting me cry, your body
bracing my uneven breathing like a splint to a fractured arm.
Your kisses were always a tourniquet.
Sometimes I wanted to bleed.
I.
Love is a cruel ghost.
She murmurs in the corner, never lets you forget how you once
felt whole oceans pulling your bones like the tide towards this woman, this
human
who had more burn than seven thousand suns in
planetary systems that matter not in all their gravity because
She is Here and You are Here and that is Enough, my God, that is God and that
is
so much.
III.
And she holds you and you no longer want to be held. And she croons to you
but you
feel stifled, like a child, you
need to leave and she needs to love and you are rowing in opposite time and
turning circles and my god you
Capsize just to show yourself you can swim.
- 1.
But tonight, it is perhaps a year back, and she is holding you, letting you cry.
She is listening to this song in the dark beside you, because you asked.
-2.
And before then, a girl rolled cherry tobacco into vanilla papers and smoked it on
your porch steps which were
Church steps because you lived above the Presbyterians
that flew a pride flag beside the crucifix.
She smelled like your ex and had a voice of dark silk.
You fell in love in one night. She wrote you poems, sent you tea-stained letters.
You painted her voice.
-3.
And before that, you fell so far in love your hands and feet switched places such
that you held her with every step you took because she was the earth itself below
you.
How you broke through her eggshell self without puncturing the yolk.
She hung all your love letters like lavender drying on the peeling walls of your first
apartment.
IV.
And now you dream of someone,
I mean I dream of someone, and
There is no poetry in wondering if my wondering is somehow driving you away,
like how water only boils once I’ve left the room, like how
I only get what I want when I forget I’ve wanted it.
V.
I remember saying I do not want love now.
Carnivorous by nature
I am forever red,
I need my bones to show.
I am like a snake, this jaw dislocates to swallow.
It’s rather gruesome.
VI.
I remember saying, she is better than you anyways.
VII.
She is better than you anyways.
VIII.
But she has never once been the
companion summoned by my subconscious in dream.
She is not who has made me flip my skin inside out just to
feel closer to your heat.
She has not been written about before.
She hasn’t made me feel sick with delight.
IX.
Maybe you haven’t either.
X.
Maybe I only love you for your voice.
XI.
I think I mostly love you for your voice.
XII.
I don’t love you.
XIII.
There can only be something better, then.
XIV.
What is better than?
XV.
Me, having enough sleep and eating properly and learning how to be alone.
People are fleeting, I am all I can know I will have now and forever.
XVI.
I do not understand sleep, but I will someday soon.

Artist: Circle Of Witches Title: Natural Born Sinners Genre: Heavy Metal / Doom Release Date: 21st May 2019 Label: Sliptrick Records The second record from Italy in a row! This time with CIRCLE OF WITCHES from Salerno, Campania. The record I am going to dissect now is named ‘Natural Born Sinners’ and I have the joy to do so because I made the acquaintance with Mario over Facebook (nice bloke btw). So, let the press text make the start while I summon the gods of review: “NATURAL BORN SINNER is the third full length from the Italian Heavy Metal doom band CIRCLE OF WITCHES published in May 2019 on Sliptrick Records. The eleven tracks on the album follow the path of Heavy Metal and Doom with influences of JUDAS PRIEST, GRAND MAGUS and CANDLEMASS. All lyrics were inspired by the theme of riot and some characters like Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, Lucifer, the fallen angel, the witches, warders of ancient wisdom, Giordano Bruno, Italian XVI century philosopher and mage burnt alive by the Roman Church and Spartacus, the slave who rebelled against Rome. The album was written in a couple of months during the 2015 cold winter and was already played during a pre-release European Tour during the 2018 in Austria, Hungary, Germany, Malta, Italy.” After giving this a few spins I can attest these guys a great talent for hooks and gripping melodies. Bove is a charismatic vocalist that fits flawlessly into the overall concept and the doomy often occult feeling songs. Coppola’s drumming is impellent and always on point, the guitar-work is groovy (the GRAND MAGUS influence is audible and very welcome) and the bass-work of Farabella is beefing the already big guitar sound even more. After a short time with the record I can already can point out three hits that will do nicely in live sets: ‘Giordano Bruno’ catchy, Classic Metal with groove and a feel of impending doom, ‘The Oracle’ a hymn with a little vocal part at the start that feels like a mini intro, this song is a melodic beast. Also check out "You belong to Witches ". #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #doom (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_J-knbojk9/?igshid=1spe9crzis4dj

In Game:
Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau (better known as Mirabeau) was a French statesman and author, as well as a leader of the French Revolution during its early stages. He was also the Mentor of the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins, who sought to establish peace with the Parisian Rite of the Templar Order and its Grand Master, François de la Serre in the early days of the revolution.
In 1776, Mirabeau became involved with various occult societies and joined the Assassin Order around this time. He became a trusted acquaintance of fellow Assassin, Charles Dorian. He eventually became the Mentor of the Assassin Brotherhood based in Paris, and headed the Assassin Council. He also established connections with the French royal court, and became a close confidant of the Templar Grand Master François de la Serre. Together, Mirabeau and de la Serre strived for peace between the Assassins and Templars, as both leaders recognized that they held common ground when it came to the future of France.
As the assembly opened on May 5th, 1789, Mirabeau met with Grand Master de la Serre. While discussing the future of the nation, the two arranged a truce between the Assassin Brotherhood and Templar Order. Later that day, de la Serre was murdered at the Palace of Versailles, as part of a coup within the Templar Order. Despite this, Mirabeau remained convinced that the Templars would uphold the truce. Eventually, though, he was forced to give up on the truce when it became clear that de la Serre’s former subordinates were not going to uphold the plans.
In October of that same year, Mirabeau began negotiating with King Louis and Marie Antoinette. In return for receiving funds to pay off his debts, Mirabeau advised the king on how to manage the revolution and remain on the throne, as the count personally wanted to ensure that the revolution remained peaceful. Still wishing the king to be under the power of the Constituent Assembly, Mirabeau sent Arno Dorian (whom Mirabeau had inducted into the Assassin Brotherhood) and a team of Assassins to protect the Women's March on Versailles, which compelled Louis to return to Paris.
It wasn’t until the Grand Master's daughter, Élise de la Serre, offered to work with the Assassins in 1791 that Mirabeau began to hope of a truce between the Assassins and the Templars. Unlike most of the Assassin Council, he was eager to accept this offer. Regarding Mirabeau as a traitor to the Brotherhood, council member Pierre Bellec poisoned him.
After his death, Mirabeau's dealings with the king were discovered, and public opinion turned against him, leading to his remains being moved away from the Panthéon. Viewed as a complex man who is not easily understood, historians disagree on whether he was a great leader who might have prevented the Reign of Terror, an opportunistic demagogue or a traitor to the revolution.
In Real Life:
Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau was born on March 9th, 1749 at Le Bignon, near Nemours, France, to economist Victor de Riqueti, marquis de Mirabeau, and his wife Marie-Geneviève de Vassan. He was said to have been disfigured by smallpox at a very young age and resembled his maternal ancestors, both of which contributed to his father’s strong dislike of him. At the age of fifteen, he was sent by his father to a boarding school by the name of "Abbé Choquard." At age eighteen, he entered the military school in Paris in the regiment of Berri-Cavaleria at Saints.
Mirabeau’s father had hoped that the military discipline would “curb” him, although the army proved to be a bad place for the young man. It was discovered that he had had an affair with his colonel's wife. Mirabeau's love affairs are well-known, owing to the celebrity of the letters to Marie Thérèse de Monnier, his "Sophie". In spite of his disfigurement (or perhaps because of it), he won her heart. Mirabeau’s father obtained a lettre de cachet and had him imprisoned on the Île de Ré, a common type of punishment at the time.
He eventually escaped to Switzerland, where Sophie joined him; the couple then made their way to Holland, where Mirabeau was arrested in 1777. The tribunal at Pontarlier had meanwhile sentenced him to death for seduction and abduction, but Mirabeau escaped execution through his father’s lettre de cachet.
In the château of Vincennes he composed the Lettres à Sophie, some erotic works, and his essay Des lettres de cachet et des prisons d’état (“Of Lettres de Cachet and of State Prisons”). Released in December 1780, he finally had to surrender himself to arrest at Pontarlier in order to have the death sentence revoked, but by August 1782 he was entirely free.
In 1783, Mirabeau became involved in a lawsuit against his wife, who wanted a judicial separation. Pleading on his own behalf, he gained the sympathy of the public but lost his case. Rejected by his wife and by his father, he had to renounce the aristocratic society into which he had been born.

After his divorce, he went to the Dutch Republic, although he traveled to Great Britain sometimes, where his paper on the lettres de cachet had proven popular. He befriended several Whig politicians and became acquainted with the American revolutionaries Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. An anglophile of sorts, he came to be inspired by the British constitutional monarchy and would later propose a similar system for France.
His life changed when he met a group of exiled Genevese revolutionaries, including the financier Étienne Clavière, in Neuchâtel. The exiles became vital to the foundation of Mirabeau's group and political reasoning, writing several texts in his name. After he began working as a pamphleteer for hire to pay off his massive debts, Mirabeau attacked all sorts of issues in his writings.
For his criticism of the French finance minister Charles Alexandre de Calonne, Mirabeau was issued another lettre de cachet and exiled to Prussia. He became convinced that "the middle classes shall only be freed by joining forces with the lower classes". Several circles looked down on Mirabeau for his frequent imprisonment, numerous scandals and famously poor relationship with a father who had seen to his imprisonment several times. Despite this, the general public grew to admire him. He showed what appears to have been genuine kindness and consideration for the lower classes. After having moved to Paris, he personally invited the family butler to work for him there. He treated the butler kindly, paying him twice the going wage. Mirabeau also paid for medicine when the butler's daughter became ill.
In 1789, King Louis XVI summoned the Estates-General to solve the economic problems faced by France. Already popular within politics, Mirabeau attempted to assist in the elections of the nobility, the Second Estate. Rejected, he instead ran successfully for election as a representative for the Third Estate.
After the storming of the Bastille on July 14th, 1789, Mirabeau warned the Assembly of the futility of passing fine-sounding decrees and urged the necessity of action. Although the cause of liberty had triumphed, Mirabeau foresaw that the intervention of armed mobs would only drive the path of Revolution further and further along a destructive path of violence.
In August 1789, he helped draft the constitution, which was named the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Defending the King's power of veto against the Assembly, he argued that the continued protests should end. He also advocated the abolition of slavery in the French colonies in the New World. He also rose to become president of the Jacobin Club, which later became known for its radical views, and took note of one of its prominent members, Maximilien de Robespierre.

In October 1789, Mirabeau began negotiating with King Louis and Marie Antoinette. In return for receiving funds to pay off his debts, Mirabeau advised the king on how to manage the revolution and remain on the throne, as the count personally wanted to ensure that the revolution remained peaceful.
Mirabeau's health had been damaged by the excesses of his youth and his strenuous work in politics, and in 1791, he contracted pericarditis. With the continuous medical attention paid to him by his friend and physician Pierre Jean George Cabanis, Mirabeau survived to perform his duties as president of the National Assembly until his death on April 2nd, 1791 in Paris. Even close to the end, he directed debates with an eloquence that further increased his popularity. The people of Paris cherished him as one of the fathers of the Revolution. During the Trial of Louis XVI in 1792, Mirabeau’s dealings with the royal court were brought to light, and he was largely discredited by the public after it became known that he had secretly acted as an intermediary between the monarchy and the revolutionaries and had taken payment for it.
He received a grand burial, and it was for him that the Panthéon in Paris was created as a burial place for great Frenchmen. The street where he died (rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin) was renamed rue Mirabeau. In 1792, his secret dealings with the king were uncovered, and in 1794 his remains were removed from the Panthéon and were replaced with those of Jean-Paul Marat. His remains were then buried anonymously in the graveyard of Clamart. In spite of searches performed in 1889, they were not found.

21 February - Blessed Memorial of St Peter Damian (c 1007-1072/73) Bishop, Confessor, Benedictine Mon, Cardinal, Theologian, Writer, Teacher, Preacher, Poet and Doctor of the Church. Petrus Damianus; Italian: Pietro or Pier Damiani
Peter was born in Ravenna, Italy, around 1007, the youngest of a large noble but poor family. Orphaned early, he was at first adopted by an elder brother, who ill-treated and under-fed him while employing him as a swineherd. After some years, another brother, Damianus, who was archpriest at Ravenna, had pity on him and took him away to be educated. Adding his brother’s name to his own, Peter made such rapid progress in his studies of theology and canon law, first at Ravenna, then at Faenza and finally at the University of Parma, that when about twenty-five years old he was already a famous teacher at Parma and Ravenna. As well as a good grounding in the field of law, he acquired a refined expertise in the art of writing the ars scribendi and, thanks to his knowledge of the great Latin classics, became “one of the most accomplished Latinists of his time, one of the greatest writers of medieval Latin” (J. Leclercq, Pierre Damien, ermite et homme d’Église, Rome, 1960, p. 172).

About 1035, however, he gave up his secular calling and, avoiding the compromised luxury of Cluniac monasteries, entered the isolated hermitage of Fonte Avellana, near Gubbio. Both as novice and as monk, his fervour was remarkable but led him to such extremes of self-mortification in penance that his health was affected, and he developed severe insomnia. On his recovery, he was appointed to lecture to his fellow monks. Then, at the request of Guy of Pomposa (Guido d’Arezzo) and other heads of neighboring monasteries, for two or three years he lectured to their brethren also and (about 1042) wrote the life of St. Romuald for the monks of Pietrapertosa. Soon after his return to Fonte Avellana he was appointed economus (manager or housekeeper) of the house by the prior, who designated him as his successor. In 1043 he became prior of Fonte Avellana, and remained so until his death in February 1072.
Subject-hermitages were founded at San Severino, Gamogna, Acerreta, Murciana, San Salvatore, Sitria and Ocri. A zealot for monastic and clerical reform, he introduced a more-severe discipline, including the practice of flagellation (“the disciplina”), into the house, which, under his rule, quickly attained celebrity and became a model for other foundations, even the great abbey of Monte Cassino. There was much opposition outside his own circle to such extreme forms of penitence, but Peter’s persistent advocacy ensured its acceptance, to such an extent that he was obliged later to moderate the imprudent zeal of some of his own hermits. Another innovation was that of the daily siesta, to make up for the fatigue of the night office. During his tenure of the priorate a cloister was built, silver chalices and a silver processional cross were purchased, and many books were added to the library.
Reformer Although living in the seclusion of the cloister, Peter Damian closely watched the fortunes of the Church and like his friend Hildebrand, the future Pope Gregory VII, he strove for reforms in a deplorable time. When Benedict IX resigned the pontificate into the hands of the archpriest John Gratian (Gregory VI) in 1045, Peter hailed the change with joy and wrote to the new pope, urging him to deal with the scandals of the church in Italy, singling out the wicked bishops of Pesaro, of Città di Castello and of Fano. Extending the area of his activities, he entered into communication with the Emperor Henry III. He was present in Rome when Clement II crowned Henry III and his consort Agnes and he also attended a synod held at the Lateran in the first days of 1047, in which decrees were passed against simony. After this he returned to his hermitage.
Pope Benedict XVI described him as “one of the most significant figures of the 11th century … a lover of solitude and at the same time a fearless man of the Church, committed personally to the task of reform.”
Philosophy Peter often condemned philosophy. He claimed that the first grammarian was the Devil, who taught Adam to decline deus in the plural. He argued that monks should not have to study philosophy, because Jesus did not choose philosophers as disciples and so philosophy is not necessary for salvation. But the idea (later attributed to Thomas Aquinas) that philosophy should serve theology as a servant serves her mistress originated with him.
Papal envoy and Cardinal During his illness the pope died, and Frédéric, abbot of Monte Cassino, was elected pope as Stephen IX. In the autumn of 1057, Stephen IX determined to make Damian a cardinal. For a long time Damian resisted the offer, for he was more at ease as an itinerant hermit-preacher than a reformer from within the Curia but was finally forced to accept and was consecrated Cardinal Bishop of Ostia on 30 November 1057. In addition he was appointed administrator of the Diocese of Gubbio. The new cardinal was impressed with the great responsibilities of his office and wrote a stirring letter to his brother-cardinals, exhorting them to shine by their example before all. Four months later Pope Stephen died at Florence and the Church was once more distracted by schism. Peter was vigorous in his opposition to the antipope Benedict X but force was on the side of the intruder and Damian retired temporarily to Fonte Avallana.

Milan About the end of the year 1059 Peter was sent as legate to Milan by Pope Nicholas II. So bad was the state of things at Milan, that benefices (a reward received in exchange for services rendered and as a retainer for future services) were openly bought and sold and the clergy publicly married the women with whom they lived. The resistance of the clergy of Milan to the reform of Ariald the Deacon and Anselm, Bishop of Lucca rendered a contest so bitter that an appeal was made to the Holy See. Nicholas II sent Damian and the Bishop of Lucca as his legates. The party of the irregular clerics took alarm and raised the cry that Rome had no authority over Milan. Peter boldly confronted the rioters in the cathedral, he proved to them the authority of the Holy See with such effect that all parties submitted to his decision. He exacted first a solemn oath from the archbishop and all his clergy that for the future no preferment should be paid for; then, imposing a penance on all who had been guilty, he reinstated in their benefices all who undertook to live in celibacy. This prudent decision was attacked by some of the rigorists at Rome but was not reversed. Meanwhile, Peter was pleading in vain to be released from the cares of his office. Neither Nicholas II nor Hildebrand would consent to spare him.
Later career He rendered valuable assistance to Pope Alexander II in his struggle with the antipope, Honorius II. In July 1061 the pope died and once more a schism ensued. Peter Damian used all his powers to persuade the antipope Cadalous to withdraw but to no purpose. Finally Anno II, Archbishop of Cologne and acting regent in Germany, summoned a council at Augsburg at which a long argument by Peter Damian was read and greatly contributed to the decision in favour of Alexander II.
In 1063 the pope held a synod at Rome, at which Peter Damian was appointed legate to settle the dispute between the Abbey of Cluny and the Bishop of Mâcon. He proceeded to France, summoned a council at Chalon-sur-Saône, proved the justice of the contentions of Cluny, settled other questions at issue in the Church of France and returned in the autumn to Fonte Avellana. Having served the papacy as legate to France and to Florence, he was allowed to resign his bishopric in 1067. Early in 1072 or 1073 he was sent to Ravenna to reconcile its inhabitants to the Holy See, they having been excommunicated for supporting their archbishop in his adhesion to the schism of Cadalous. On his return thence he was seized with fever near Faenza. He lay ill for a week at the monastery of Santa Maria degl’Angeli, now Santa Maria Vecchia. On the night preceding the feast of the Chair of St. Peter at Antioch, he ordered the office of the feast to be recited and at the end of the Lauds he died. He was at once buried in the monastery church, lest others should claim his relics.

Today we have the release blitz of Ribbons of Scarlet! Check out the gorgeous new release and grab your copy today! Title: Ribbons of Scarlet Authors: Laura Kamoie * Kate Quinn * Stephanie Dray * Sophie Perinot * Heather Webb * E. Knight Genre: Historical Fiction About Ribbons of Scarlet: Ribbons of Scarlet is a timely story of the power of women to start a revolution—and change the world. In late eighteenth-century France, women do not have a place in politics. But as the tide of revolution rises, women from gilded salons to the streets of Paris decide otherwise—upending a world order that has long oppressed them. Blue-blooded Sophie de Grouchy believes in democracy, education, and equal rights for women, and marries the only man in Paris who agrees. Emboldened to fight the injustices of King Louis XVI, Sophie aims to prove that an educated populace can govern itself--but one of her students, fruit-seller Louise Audu, is hungrier for bread and vengeance than learning. When the Bastille falls and Louise leads a women’s march to Versailles, the monarchy is forced to bend, but not without a fight. The king’s pious sister Princess Elisabeth takes a stand to defend her brother, spirit her family to safety, and restore the old order, even at the risk of her head. But when fanatics use the newspapers to twist the revolution’s ideals into a new tyranny, even the women who toppled the monarchy are threatened by the guillotine. Putting her faith in the pen, brilliant political wife Manon Roland tries to write a way out of France’s blood-soaked Reign of Terror while pike-bearing Pauline Leon and steely Charlotte Corday embrace violence as the only way to save the nation. With justice corrupted by revenge, all the women must make impossible choices to survive--unless unlikely heroine and courtesan’s daughter Emilie de Sainte-Amaranthe can sway the man who controls France’s fate: the fearsome Robespierre. Exclusive Excerpt: National Convention Paris, France December 1792 “There she is, the harlot . . .” “La femme Roland . . .” “Traitorous slut . . .” The whispers followed me as I made my way across the floor, looking neither right nor left. It was the first time a woman had been called to address the Convention, and I’d dressed for the occasion as though it were an honor: a blue gown that foamed about my feet as I stalked to the bar, a white fichu pinned with my tricolor cockade, red ribbons twined through my hair. A revolutionary patriot, top to toe. When I turned to face the questions, I let my eyes travel, bold and confident, to the high bleacher seats where the radical Jacobins held court. Before the proceedings could even begin, some heckler from their ranks called, “How do you answer the charge of treason, citizeness?” I replied with calm contempt. “The charge is ludicrous, and all here know it.” It was a smear job of the crudest kind: an unsavory informer reporting he had discovered a London conspiracy to restore the king, and that my husband and I were complicit. My husband had already been summoned to account for himself and had perhaps not done as well as he might: he couldn’t hide his indignation, and he became flustered when the tone turned sneering. I would not give my questioners a chance to sneer. “The informer states clearly, Citizeness Roland, that you—” “I did not summon him.” I spoke briskly, taking the reins before my questioner could bring down the whip and speed this interrogation to the pace my enemies wanted. This was going to go at my pace, not theirs. “From my files of letters I can see the man wrote to me, asking for an interview with Minister Roland. I receive dozens of such requests every week.” “You do not deny you received the man?” “He paid a brief call, and from his probing I concluded he was sent to sound us out about some scheme or other.” I smiled. “Or perhaps I was wrong. I am a woman and not skilled in these matters.” The questioner took turns with his colleagues, trying to turn my words on me, trying to talk me in circles. As long as I had listened to politicians drone over my dinner table, I could talk anyone in circles. I shredded their accusations and stamped the shreds underfoot, feeling the color rise in my cheeks—not embarrassment, but the fierce heat of pride. Was this what Roland felt when he addressed the Convention? This rush of power that tingled the fingertips, the confidence that my words were deploying like obedient soldiers and the crowd sat in the palm of my hand? Why would anyone who had command of this floor ever leave it? Finally, I was excused to the sound of ringing applause among the deputies, the charge dismissed in full, the honors of the session formally accorded to me. I looked from Robespierre to Danton to Marat with a wide bland smile as I glided out, and the smile became a beam as my husband drew me into the nearest empty hall. “Thank goodness it’s over.” His face was creased with relief. “Let me take you home, calm your nerves.” “My nerves are calm, and I can take myself home. You stay, speak with those who need reassuring.” He kissed my forehead. “I hated seeing you up there,” he muttered, before rushing back inside. He’d hardly gone before a low voice spoke behind me, prickling my skin. “I loved seeing you up there. You were born to it.” I turned, smile draining away. The man who loved me stood feet planted wide, arms folded, dark hair rumpled—he must have been waiting to catch me alone. “Citizen,” I managed to say, not daring to put his name through my lips. “You were brilliant,” he said quietly. “Brave as a lioness.” A voice of calm power for a man not yet thirty-three. Six years younger than I, what did that say about me? “They should have known better than to try to trap you in so crude a snare.” “That shabby excuse for a conspiracy might have been crude, but it was real, even if we had no involvement.” I kept my voice brisk, turning the conversation to safer waters. “As long as the king lives, there will be plots to restore him. The matter will have to be dealt with.” “The king is just a man, and a small one.” “With a long shadow.” We both smiled involuntarily. It had always been like that with us, the eager cut-and-thrust of our minds. “If you wish to speak to my husband . . .” But the man who loved me took my hand. “Manon, I honor Roland and support him always. But I am here for you.” About Laura Kamoie: New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller Laura Kaye is the author of over forty books in romantic suspense and contemporary and erotic romance and has sold more than one million books in the U.S. alone. VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis accepted the resignation of a U.S. bishop Thursday and authorized an investigation into allegations he sexually harassed adults, adding awkward drama to an audience with U.S. church leaders over the abuse and cover-up scandal roiling the Catholic Church.
The resignation of West Virginia Bishop Michael Bransfield was announced just as the four-member U.S. delegation was sitting down with Francis in his private study in the Apostolic Palace. Among the four was Bransfield’s cousin, Monsignor Brian Bransfield, secretary-general of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Bishop Bransfield had been investigated for an alleged groping incident in 2007 and was implicated in court testimony in 2012 in an infamous Philadelphia priestly sex abuse case. He strongly denied ever abusing anyone and the diocese said it had disproved the claims. He continued with his ministry until he offered to retire, as required, when he turned 75 last week.
The Vatican said Francis accepted his resignation Thursday and appointed Baltimore Archbishop William Lori to take over Bransfield’s Wheeling-Charleston diocese temporarily. Lori said in a statement that Francis had also instructed him to “conduct an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment of adults against Bishop Bransfield.”
No details of the allegations were revealed and his diocese said it had “no idea” where Bransfield was after the Vatican ordered him to live outside the diocese.
Lori set up a hotline for potential victims to call, said the Vatican had instructed him to make the investigation public, and vowed to conduct a thorough study into what he said were “troubling” claims against Bransfield, who was a major fundraiser for the Vatican via the Pennsylvania-based Papal Foundation.
The revelation was the latest twist in an incredible turn of events in the U.S. church that began with the June 20 announcement that one of the most prestigious U.S. cardinals, Theodore McCarrick, had been accused of groping a teenage altar boy in the 1970s.
Francis removed McCarrick as a cardinal in July after a U.S. church investigation found the allegation credible. After news broke of the investigation, several former seminarians and priests came forward to report that they, too, had been abused or harassed by McCarrick as adults.
The McCarrick affair — coupled with revelations in the Pennsylvania grand jury report detailing decades of abuse and cover-up in six dioceses — has fueled outrage among the rank-and-file faithful who had trusted church leaders to reform themselves after the abuse scandal first erupted in Boston in 2002.
Outrage has also been directed at Francis and the Vatican and has fueled conservative criticism of Francis’ pontificate.
The head of the U.S. bishops conference, Houston Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, had requested the papal audience last month following revelations that McCarrick had risen through church ranks even though the allegations of sexual misconduct were known in U.S. and Vatican circles.
DiNardo requested a full-fledged Vatican investigation into the McCarrick affair, and said he also wanted answers to allegations that a string of Vatican officials knew of McCarrick’s misdeeds since 2000, but turned a blind eye.
A statement issued by DiNardo after the papal audience made no mention of his request for a Vatican investigation. It said that the Americans briefed the pope on the “laceration” that abuse has caused and that “we look forward to actively continuing our discernment together identifying the most effective next steps.”
The statement also made no mention of the Bransfield investigation. McCarrick was a co-consecrator when Bishop Bransfield was ordained a bishop in 2005 and the two were active in the Papal Foundation, the big U.S. fundraising organization that McCarrick co-founded and which has funneled millions of dollars to the Vatican over the years.
Bransfield was president when the foundation was thrown into disarray last year over a revolt by its lay donors. They were incensed that the cardinals who run the foundation had agreed to a $25 million request from the Vatican to bail out a troubled Rome hospital. Under pressure, the cardinals pulled the plug on the funding mid-way through.
Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston spokesman Tim Bishop said Thursday he couldn’t answer questions about Bransfield’s whereabouts or whether he has an attorney.
“The Holy See has instructed him to live outside the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston,” Bishop said. “I have no idea of his whereabouts.”
The Vatican hasn’t responded to allegations by its former ambassador to the U.S., Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, that Francis effectively rehabilitated McCarrick from sanctions imposed by Pope Benedict XVI over allegations McCarrick would routinely invite seminarians to his beach house and into his bed.
Francis has, however, responded to the overall scandal with a series of initiatives aimed at trying to convince the faithful that he “gets it” and is prepared to take measures to put an end to what he has called the “culture of cover-up” in the church.
On the eve of the U.S. audience, Francis announced he was summoning the presidents of bishops conferences around the world to a February summit to discuss prevention measures and protection of minors and vulnerable adults.
The surprise announcement was largely dismissed as a belated damage control effort by victims’ advocates. Church historians questioned why such an urgent problem was being scheduled for discussion six months from now with the very bishops who are blamed for much of the scandal.
“Where are the laity and others who might provide both new and uncomplicit voices and insights into the process?” asked Margaret Susan Thompson, associate professor of history at Syracuse University.
Even DiNardo’s own record on protecting children has now come into question. On the eve of his audience with Francis, The Associated Press reported that two victims in Houston had accused him of not doing enough to stop a priest who was arrested this week on sexual abuse charges.
The archdiocese issued a statement Wednesday confirming that both alleged victims had come forward to report abuse by the priest, the Rev. Manuel LaRosa-Lopez, one of them in 2001.
The delegation of U.S. bishops announced no plans to speak to the media after their audience.
