top 10 kdrama bromances to feed your empty heart
if you scroll through my page, you can already guess number 1.
#10 - our beloved summer : choi ung and kim ji ung
Tumblr media
beautiful beautiful men choi woo shik and kim sung cheol played ung bros for life in this beautiful beautiful drama. one of the best handled love triangles ive seen. they were there for each other through thick and thin, and helped each other through sm. best. on the tenth spot because they could've expanded on it more :(
#9 - what's wrong with secretary kim? : lee young joon and park yoo sik
Tumblr media
i could never make it through the series. i left it behind on ep9/10 i think, and primarily because i physically cannot digest how emotionless park min young is. BUT, kudos to the hilarious office best bromance by the great park seo joon and kang ki young. ps - why is kang ki young the pankaj tripathi of korean dramas?
#8 - strong girl do bong soon : ahn min hyuk and in gook du
Tumblr media
can we ever forget the legendary wink? or the dream where min hyuk is dressed as a woman? i think not. this was more of a frenemy type bromance, united by their love for bong soon and ironically divided by it, too. i refuse to acknowledge this as a love triangle tho. bong soon was astronomical in not hurting gook du and i will not take any criticism. is it a bromance if one of them is pretending to be gay? (and no, we will not discuss any sort of iTs pRoBLeMaTiC debates here.)
#7 - tale of the nine tailed : lee yeon and koo shin ju
Tumblr media
don't come at me with the lee rang comments. rang was his half brother, related by blood. their relationship was top tier, but the stay at home husband yeon and working husband shin ju was too cute to not be classified as a bromance. in the beginning, i saw their relationship as shin ju serving yeon, a dynamic that they both seemed to embody. but as the show progresses, yeon baby we know you love shin ju just as much :*
#6 - alchemy of souls : jang uk and seo yul
song joon ki seems to have an attachment to bromances. han seo had the best character arc of the ENTIRE kdrama universe fight me. that court scene where vincenzo pats han seo's cheek was max bro cuteness. still not over his death. he deserved better.
#5 - vincenzo : vincenzo cassano and jang han seo
Tumblr media
even though i didn't very much like the show's first couple, bromance delivered well. hospital scene peaked, complete true beauty sameness. it was pretty hard to understand who was the superior officer in this tbh initially, since their comraderie was so cool, shi jin was kid to soldier in a split second. loved how they chose not to unnecessarily exaggerate the love triangle initially bec i was only rooting for the second couple.
#4 - descendants of the sun : yoo shi jin and seo dae young
Tumblr media
business proposal was the first kdrama i saw. i finished it in a three day trip, and i remember thinking more about the bromance than the romance. i was NOT used to the clumsiness of kdramas in general, like wattpad fics incarnated. the bromance delivered well, made me root for the second couple, and was the only initial indicator of kang tae moo being human instead of archaeopteryx. that word was a nightmare to spell.
#3 - business proposal : kang tae moo and cha sung hoon
Tumblr media
the most wolfstar bromance if I ever saw one. and NO, i do not ship wolfstar just like i do not ship these two. they are totally adorable, and specially since their personalities seemed to switch from when they were children. yeong turned all serious face and lee gon got fun. love their years of friendship sm, their wordless communication and yeong in general. the acting was amazing.
#2 - the king - eternal monarch : lee gon and jo yeong
Tumblr media
#1 - guardian - the lonely and great god : kim shin aka goblin and wang yeo aka grim reaper
Tumblr media
yes, i know I'm missing a lot of iconic ones. unfortunately, i haven't seen alot of kdramas and have left alot in bw (like true beauty bec i couldn't see second lead hurt).
spring onion slays ^
told ya, if u follow me u already knew what the first one was gonna be. being the simp i am for the goblin and grim reaper, these two achieved the max points for their bromance. that slow dynamic of goblin calling reaper's hat tacky to fighting with knives to that iconic 'saranghae' to 'HOW DARE YOU' to goblin boiling eggs with his powers while reaper chills the beer. they know each other so well. love love love them and you should too 🔪
Tumblr media
in my heart, the trio of our boys beats nothing (except for the gookdu-minhyuk relationship of the crown prince and uk). but instead of choosing the frenemy thing, i decided to love yul and uk more. yul was such a quiet character, with incredible potential in him for me to hate him, but then...(the guy is literally too sweet and beautiful and nice i can ramble for days). and uk, man, our power baby who loves every version of our beautiful but slow girl, needed so much emotional support. uk and yul were not afraid to show their affection for each other, a trait i admired in all the three boys (jang uk, seo yul and park dang gu).

Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned.
***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness

Opinion
This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

Art On Defectors and North Korea
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/north-korean-defectors-explore-the-soul-of-a-divided-peninsula-through-art/2020/04/04/8dd1ba1a-7367-11ea-ad9b-254ec99993bc_story.html
This article gave insight into the exepreince fo defectors and their artistic responses
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist Kang Chun-hyuk expresses his distorted sense of identity in his first painting. This issue is common amongst people who have defected from their countries and resettling is challenge when considering cultural differences. The barbed wire painting reflects the border between the north and south and how accessible it is, but only to nature (as reflected the symbolism of the dragonfly). False Peace was a piece in response to the first inter-korean summit. Kang criticizes this meeting for the deception of peace it had bought, as under the surface of North Korea's image, is a land of suffering people.
“Below in the shadows, you can see the real North Korean people".
My aim for this project is to not necessarily directly critique the NK government but to bring awareness to the charity cause itself and this is by sharing the stories of defectors who have found a better life outside.
Tumblr media
Kang also depicts the inherent violence and militia of NK. He explains how he saw his first public execution at the age of 9. This piece is a satirical play on the traditional paintings seen in NK propaganda.
Tumblr media
Artist Jeon Ju-yeong shows a defector looking back from South Korea toward his hometown in the North. The painting demonstrates how the two sides are close, but worlds apart.
Tumblr media
Ahn Chung-guk's works are abstract pieces and often feature abandoned objects. His fascination for the abandoned is a reflection of his upbringing. This piece is conveying the attempt to tear and break something down, a feeling he has experienced not only in the North, but the South also. This tearing can perhaps be related to the stereotypes associated with his name-Ahn’s full name literally means 'dedication to the nation', and he doesn't want this to define him.
Tumblr media
Sun Mu trained as an artist in North Korea, where he painted propaganda posters that glorified the country’s ruling dynasty. He fled in 1998 to escape famine and since then has used the same artistic style he learned in his homeland to lampoon those leaders. He has drawn many caricatures of the North’s ruling dynasty. Instead of looking stately, they appear smug and overweight, often juxtaposed with symbols of Western decadence. Sun Mu’s works often feature images of children; one depicts a pudgy-cheeked young girl scowling as she sips Coca-Cola through a straw.
Tumblr media
UK artist Gareth Fuller created a map of Pyongyang after a tourist visitation. He explains how his maps for other countries were free for him to roam, but NK had strict routes to follow. This reflects NK's attempts to formulate a perfect image to the rest of the world.
Tumblr media
Choi Sung-Gook
Choi sought a better life in South Korea after working as a propaganda animator n North Korea, earning little compared to animators across the border. He also wanted the freedom to make hs own works, away from the risk of exposure and punishment. In South Korea, Choi worked for a radio station that broadcasted information to North Korea for those wishing to defect. He initially struggled to produce work in South Korea as he was so used to porogpand messages in NK. However, in 2016, he started a webcomic which depicted the lives of North Korean defectors in the South. His webtoon “Rodong Shimmun” – a play on words meaning ’labour interrogation', is viewed by tens of thousands of visitors. Its goal is to conjure more empathy between North and South Koreans. The comics Choi creates reflect the cultural differences that North Koreans face as they begin to live new lives in South Korea, using South Korean humour to relay the struggles faced by defectors.
Tumblr media
Among the 300 North Koreans who testified about regime abuses to  International Criminal Court by the UN Security Council was Kim Kwang-Il, a 48-year-old defector who spent almost three years in a North Korean gulag for smuggling pine nuts across the border. After escaping to South Korea, Kim published a book about his experiences that included professional illustrations of the crimes he witnessed. They are graphic images but they reveal the truth of the country.
The People’s Museum of North Korea is an art exhibit that appeared in Canada. The aim was to start a conversation about the North Korean people and not a story where they’re passively suffering under this horrible regime. The interactive space contains elements and objects that help tell a story of resilience and resourcefulness by showing how North Koreans invent creative solutions to access information and other essentials from outside the country.
Tumblr media
The exhibition aimed to cultivate donations, which was a similar idea I had for my project. An immersive experience is effective in getting viewers to sympathise with what they are being shown.

Korean intelligence chief Kim Gyu-pyeong (Byung-hun Lee) has sworn to serve, but his loyalty is tested to the limit in a key moment for South Korea’s history.
There are still tickets available for all these titles. Feel free to have a look at the whole programme on their website and enjoy Scotland in your home. Next year, we’ll definitely go to Glasgow !

Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai
Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, opened to the public in 2021 as one of the top three attractions of the Dubai Expo 2020, and aims to illuminate the ingenuity and possibility of architecture as society looks to intelligent strategies for future sustainable living.
photograph : Dany Eid / Expo 2020
Drawing inspiration from complex natural processes like photosynthesis, the dynamic form of the Pavilion is in service to its function, capturing energy from sunlight and fresh water from humid air. The relationship of building to site, and to its physical and cultural contexts is critical, as the facility’s strength lies in its capacity to demonstrate a new way of living sustainably in a challenging desert environment.
Sited in a prominent location, the Pavilion structure works in tandem with the considered landscape of demonstration gardens, winding pathways and shaded enclaves to create an aura of magic punctuated by the sights, smells and tactile opportunities of nature. The gardens are both experiential and functional, setting the stage for the exhibition contents within and creating shaded gathering areas that will manage and distribute crowds while providing retail, food and beverage opportunities.
When creating a building with a goal of generating its own energy and water in a harsh climate, the solution cannot be driven by a single aspect of the design. To achieve net-zero, the design required a series of technologies, building systems and design solutions to act in unison. This self-contained, micro-ecosystem resulted from a combination of strategies: optimizing the natural conditions inherent in its location; working with and within them to maximize efficiency; and supplementing them with pioneering sustainable technologies to create innovative solutions
The design is driven by maximizing efficiency which it does by seeking shade in the one place available: below the ground. The Pavilion uses the insulating properties of the earth to shield it from the harsh ambient temperatures which can soar to 50 degrees in the warmer months.
photo : Dany Eid / Expo 2020
Most of the accommodation is below grade and cased with an earth roof system, creating a substantial barrier to help reduce its cooling loads and conserve energy. The above ground surfaces are clad with a gabion rainscreen wall – sourced with local stone from the Hajar Mountains – which provides enough thermal mass to absorb the heat while the stone’s natural color reflects the sun.
Flora and fauna sourced from the surrounding deserts – including some species that have been never been cultivated by humans – are arranged on the planted roofs and throughout the gardens, creating a water efficient landscape that functions through a series of closed loop systems designed to filter, supply and recycle water. The framing of these local topographical and floral features, combined with the technologies of water recycling and reuse, provide visitors a newfound appreciation of the unique region and its biodiversity. The site also includes areas for productive agricultural landscape featuring halophytic agriculture and other testing beds.
The culmination of the building’s systems can be found in the heart of the Pavilion, its large exterior courtyard. Borrowing from the vernacular of the region, the courtyard provides a large, passively cooled space for visitors. During the design, thermodynamic studies charting the prevailing breezes were used to shape the courtyard to allow desirable cool south-westerly breezes to enter while blocking warmer winds.
Soaring over the courtyard, the Pavilion’s canopy accommodates more than 6,000 sqm of ultra-efficient monocrystalline photovoltaic cells embedded in glass panels. The combination of the cell and the glass casing allow the building to harness solar energy while providing shade and daylighting to the visitors below. The experience in the courtyard is of being beneath a large shade tree with dappled light projecting onto the surfaces below. The form of the canopy works with the courtyard to direct cool air in, while simultaneously exhausting low-lying hot air through a chimney effect at the centre.
The canopy also serves as a large collection area for stormwater and dew that replenishes the building’s water system. The result is a structure that combines the most advanced technology in solar capture and a clear understanding of the natural conditions of the site to actively generate energy while passively cooling and enhancing the experience of the visitor. With over 6,000 sqm of exhibition space, the Sustainability Pavilion will enjoy a long life after Expo is over, transforming into a science museum and expanding on its mission of exploring sustainable practices and the critical stewardship of our fragile planet.
ENERGY E TREES The Sustainability Pavilion is complemented by an installation of Energy Trees which contribute toward its goal of producing its own energy. Nineteen E-trees ranging from 15-18m in diameter are dispersed throughout the site and provide 28% of the energy required to power the building. Inspired by the Dragon’s Blood, a tree found only on Socotra, an island 200 miles off the coast of Yemen, the E-Tree is designed to be a deployable freestanding shade structure that harvests the sun’s energy. The structure is constructed from steel and complex composites and has been optimized to support an 18m photovoltaic array.
Taking further cues from nature, the array follows the sun in the same manner as a sunflower, rotating 180 degrees throughout the course of the day to maximize the energy yield and increase the efficiency of the solar cells, before returning to its original position at night. Bespoke trapezoidal panels composed of highly efficient monocrystalline solar cells, embedded within three layers of glass, provide shade below without casting severe shadows or blocking views to the sky.
Supporting the array is an engineered carbon fibre structure inspired by the design of the steering wheel of a yacht. The structural design maximizes strength in its shape, with radial branches encircled by a compression ring while decreasing the load of the structure itself. Carbon fibre was chosen for its light weight which allows the form to extend unsupported for up to nine meters in all directions.
The E-Trees have become an integral part of both the exhibition and the Pavilion site – showcasing and educating visitors on the research on solar harnessing and panel technology – while at the same time, serving as an integral part of the systems that contributes to a net zero energy goal of the building.

🐰 has sent you a voice message
1:14 AM
Incoming call: 🐰mr rabbit csy🐰
You jump from your bed, “Hello?”
“Come outside.”
You quickly throw on a hoodie on and rush outside, your eyes adjusting to the darkness of the night. Your eyes don’t have to wander for long before landing on a raven haired male, his hoodie flopped over his messy hair. He looks disgruntled, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as he lets out a yawn. Oops, you definitely woke him up.
You quickly walk up to him, and before you can greet him, are met with a plastic bag offered to you.
“I bought your favorite— green tea flavored.” Your eyes widen before rustling through the contents, pulling out said ice cream.
“Yah, you bought ice cream at this time?” You rip open the wrapper, taking a huge bite of the creamy treat and sigh with delight, “Did you really feel threatened by me buying ice cream for Daeyeol? I was kidding! Well, actually if he asked I probably would, but wow I actually managed to get you to buy me ice cream.”
He ignores you, watching silently as you quickly devour the dessert before pulling out a napkin once he notices the mess that you’ve made on your face.
“Hey!” You whine as he wipes at the corners of your mouth. You try not to lean into the warmth of his touch that you feel even through the napkin; it’s a crisp night after all. You will your cheeks to not grow warm, but your ears quickly glow red instead.
“You’re so messy,” he sighs, finally pulling away and taking note of how you’re unusually quiet. Usually, you would playfully push his hand away, complaining that you weren’t a baby, but your head is turned away, eyes downcast at your shoes. You can see that he’s trying to meet your eyes, but you can’t look at him, not with your heart pounding a mile a minute, nervous and slightly embarrassed.
Pat. You look up as his hand rubs the top of your hair gently, carefully caressing your head through your locks.
“Are you nervous because of the presentation tomorrow? Is that why you can’t sleep?” He muses softly, eyes still trying to meet yours. You grow shy, extremely shy, but shift your eyes to meet his for a brief second before looking away. His eyes dripped of warm honey, enveloping you in a feeling only he could ever have on you.
Seeing you avert your eyes, he takes that as a yes, and brings you closer to him by a tug of the arm. You squeak in surprise, suddenly finding yourself enveloped in his arms. Warmness spreads through your body like a blazing fire, now being fueled by the beating of your heart.
The things you do to me, you think as your arms slowly wrap around his waist, hugging him back. You take in his scent, a scent you’ve come to recognize as familiar and comforting, ever since you met him freshman year.
“I know you have a lot of stage anxiety, but you’ve gotten so much better at public speaking. You’ll do great tomorrow, don’t worry.” Even his voice is warm, his comforting words becoming even more meaningful.
Stage fright was the last thing on your mind at the current moment, but he didn’t have to know that.
If you don’t let me go soon, my heart’s going to explode.
Instead, you nod, allowing yourself to rest your head against his chest. You can feel his heartbeat through his hoodie; a tiny voice in the back of your mind wonders if you have the same effect on him that he has on you.
You stay like that for a while, his arms bringing you closer when you shiver from an incoming breeze.
You wish you could stay like this forever, but you now realize how late it must be, and he’s right, you do have a presentation tomorrow morning, and you do suffer from stage fright still.
“Ah thanks. I’m fine now, I swear,” you start blabbering, reluctantly pulling away from his embrace. You suddenly feel bad; you made him get out of bed for no reason, and he brought you ice cream, “Sorry for troubling you, Sungyoon-ah.”
He sees a pout forming on your face, and he studies you closely.
“I’m your best friend, Y/N, isn’t it my job to make you feel better,” he tilts his head, but doesn’t question you further as you widen the gap between the two of you.
You stare at him blankly before finally smiling at his words, “Sorry, you’re right. I guess the nerves are keeping me awake. But I do feel better now! Thanks for coming, and ah- for the ice cream! I swear I won’t buy any for Daeyeol, only for you, since it seems to bother you so much,” you try to tease him in an attempt to lighten up the mood.
He smiles back, relieved that you seem to be acting normal again. Little did he know, his smile was making your stomach do summersaults, but you tried to push past it as he let out a chuckle.
“Go get some rest, okay? You have a big day ahead,” he ruffles your hair, laughing as you swat his hand away.
“My hair,” you whine, but nevertheless, grin back at him.
“Bye, Sungyoon-ah!””
“Bye Y/N, make sure to wake up on time.”
He waits until you reach the door of your building before turning around and heading back in the direction of his dorm.
As you enter your room, you immediately fling yourself onto your bed and scream into your pillow, kicking your legs.
“Can my heart not do that for once,” you whine, settling on your side as you hug a pillow to your chest.
You allow a smile to spread across your face after a while, cheeks once again flushing red as you remember the feeling of him embracing you.
“I wonder if you feel the same way I feel about you?”
You didn’t know when it had happened, but somewhere along the way, you had fallen in love with your best friend.
---------------
“Y/N!!” You turn around at the sound of your name, yelping as someone jumps on you, almost making you lose your balance.
“Jangjun!” You shove him off of you as he laughs. You turn around and see Donghyun and Joochan following close behind, concentrating on their phones as they play Kart Rider probably. You stare at them for a bit before messing with their phones, randomly touching their screens. They complain in unison, swatting your hands away as you chuckle.
“Did you just get out of class, Y/N?” Jangjun bounces from foot to foot, looking as happy as ever. You shake your head.
“I got out a while ago. I’m just waiting for Sungyoon to get out of class. I promised him I’d buy him ice cream-”
“What, you never buy us ice cream,” Joochan cuts in, finally looking up from his phone as Donghyun shouts in victory.
“Do you want to come with? I’m sure Sungyoon wouldn’t mind,” Joochan quickly shakes his head, holding his hands up.
“I don’t want to be a third wheel on your date, but thanks though,” You sputter at his words, heat quickly rising to your cheeks. Jangjun bursts out laughing at the look on your face, and it takes all your willpower to not punch him.
“D-Date? Sungyoon and I aren’t like that,” You finally manage to say, but your ears are still burning in embarrassment. The three boys look at you expectantly and you grow even more self-conscious, holding your hands up in defense, “Why are you all staring at me like that? It’s true!”
“Anyway, are you going to the fireworks display tonight? I heard it’s going to be really nice. Our school really went all out planning the event!” Jangjun asks, his tone still teasing. You sigh in defeat, but are grateful for the topic change.
“Oh, was that tonight?” You think about the number of assignments you have piled up and grimace, “I don’t know, I kind of got a lot of work to do-”
Jangjun quickly waves you off, “Nonsense! You need to relax once in a while, Y/N.”
As you’re forming a reply, his eyes focus on something behind you and an evil grin appears on his face.
“Oh! Sungyoon hyung, great timing! Y/N is dying to go to the firework display tonight!” Your eyes widen in horror as you realize who exactly Jangjun spotted behind you, “She’s too scared to go alone though, so she wants you to-”
“Lee Jangjun, I swear, I will end you-” You try to whisper threateningly, but he pays you no mind as he waves at who you now know is Sungyoon, finally coming out of his class. Both Joochan and Donghyun are laughing hysterically behind Jangjun, and in that moment, you’ve never wanted the ground to open up and swallow you whole more.
“Hm?” You turn your head as Sungyoon comes to stand next to you. You simply gape at him, at a loss for words as he turns in his head to you curiously, “You wanted to go to that?”
“I- uh, well,” You try your best to muster up an answer, but to no avail. Curse you, Lee Jangjun!
He takes a long look at your face, definitely questioning why you’re acting so strange, before shrugging, “Sure, why not? I think it’ll be fun. Are you guys going?”
You silently plead with Jangjun, staring at him intently. Jangjun hums in thought, deciding to spare you a little.
“Yeah, we’ll be there,” You sigh in relief, not noticing Sungyoon sneak a glance at you.
---------------
“It’s not a date, it’s not a date, it’s not a date,” you repeat to yourself multiple times as you get ready. Yet, you can’t help putting more attention to your outfit, making sure your hair looks at least presentable. As you put on a touch of makeup, you frown. It’s not like this is the first time you’ve hung out with Sungyoon, let alone in a group- he’s your best friend! It is the first time in a while though, as you both have been very busy with school and extracurriculars lately.
“Get your head out of the gutter, Y/N,” You slap your cheeks, “You haven’t hung out with your friends in a while; It’ll be fun!”
---------------
“There he is,” You see Sungyoon leaning against a wall, his eyes glued to his phone. You quietly make your way to him, being extra careful to not get noticed. Once you’re close enough, you tiptoe and lean in close to his ear.
“Boo!”
“Oh, you’re here.”
You pout as Sungyoon simply turns his head in your direction, slipping his phone into his pocket.
“You didn’t even flinch,” You complain, feeling disgruntled. He snorts, pushing off the wall to fully face you. His eyes settle on your figure, making you nervously shift your weight from foot to foot. Silence envelops you as he continues to stare.
“Is there something on my face?” You try to break the silence, feeling shy under his gaze. He tilts his head before humming thoughtfully.
“You look nice,” Your cheeks grow hot almost immediately upon hearing his compliment. You don’t dare meet his eyes, knowing that you would probably combust. Instead, your eyes settle on your shoes, finding them very interesting.
“Ah- thanks,” You squeak out, racking your brain for an appropriate response, “We haven’t hung out in a while, so I thought I would dress up a little more? To not look like a sleep deprived college student, you know-”
Shoot, you were starting to ramble. Quickly shaking your head, you try to change the subject, “Where’s Jangjun and the others?”
“Did they not tell you?” You look up at his words, confused. Seeing the puzzled expression on your face, he continues, “Jangjun said they were going to be late. Something about Joochan and Donghyun fighting over this game, and they’re pretty serious about it.”
You stop yourself from screaming at the world.
“Let me message Jangjun real quick.” He nods his head as you take your phone out of your pocket. He doesn’t miss how your mood has soured upon learning of the absence of your friends.
6:49 PM
Y/N: Lee
Y/N: Jangjun
Y/N: You are dead.
Y/N: When I find you, you better run
🐮: Woah, Y/N, calm down!
🐮: We’ll only be an hour or two late, no biggie :9
🐮 : Have fun on your date tho~ But not too much fun, okay?
🐮 : ;))))
“I’m going to murder that guy,” You curse underneath your breath, letting out a big sigh as you put your phone back in your pocket.
“Everything okay?” You jump, remembering where you are. Sungyoon has an unreadable expression on his face as he studies you, and you try not to get too caught up in his gaze.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” You try to reassure him, but your smile is weak, “Let’s just go.”
You both start walking towards the food stands at the entrance of the field, trying not to get too caught up in your nerves.
It’s not a date. It’s not.
“Y/N?” You look up, and find Sungyoon farther ahead than you thought he was. It’s suddenly crowded as everyone is trying to get food before the show starts. As someone pushes past you, Sungyoon’s hand reaches out to grasp your wrist and pulls you close to him.
“Be careful, it’s really crowded here.” Your head automatically nods, not trusting your voice to say anything as all your attention goes to the grip he has on your wrist. His hand lowers until your palms touch, and he squeezes your hand. His hold is gentle and warm, making butterflies dance in your stomach. You let yourself be dragged by the pull of his hand as he weaves through the crowd.
The time spent at the food stands is relatively enjoyable. Both of you haven’t eaten before coming, so you allow yourselves to look through all the stalls, buying all the food you want. You easily share your food and quickly fall into a comfortable pace, laughing and finally relaxing.
You do notice that once your hands are empty, Sungyoon reaches out to grasp the one closest to him. You convince yourself that it’s because he doesn’t want you to get lost, having experienced your lack of sense of direction first-hand. Still, you allow yourself a bit of giddiness, glancing down at your hands occasionally.
Having filled your stomachs, you both finally settle down on one of the provided picnic blankets laid out on the grass, the show nearing its start time.
As you hum absentmindedly, taking a picture of the darkening sky with your phone, you see Sungyoon staring at you from the corner of your eye. You turn your head in his direction, tilting your head, “What?”
He shakes his head, propping his chin on his hand, “Nothing, it’s just…”
“Hm?”
“I’m glad you’re having a good time,” He finally says after a long pause, turning his head to look up at the sky, “I feel like you’ve been distant lately? Not that I blame you, school is in full swing after all. But you’ve definitely been acting a little strange; I thought the stress was getting to you.”
He then turns to you, suddenly smiling, “But you seem to be in a better mood now, so I’m happy.”
Your eyes widen in surprise, the nature of his words dawning on you.
You really messed up, didn’t you?
Before you can respond, a loud horn goes off, signaling the start of the fireworks show. You both turn to look up the night sky as one after another, balls of colored flame shoot up and explode with a giant pop.
You lower your eyes to stare at Sungyoon, the fireworks casting various hues of color on his face, highlighting his features. You didn’t realize it, but you had probably grown more distant as your feelings for him bloomed, becoming too nervous to simply hang out with him anymore. And here he was, just happy that you were finally having a good time with him.
What a best friend you are.
You’re suddenly overwhelmed, feeling guilty for having worried him, yet grateful that he’s still the same Sungyoon that you met back in freshman year, the same person who is in tune with your feelings no matter the situation, who at the end of the day just seeing you happy makes him happy; he’s the one you fell in love with.
Before you can even process what you’re about to say, your mouth opens.
“Sungyoon-ah. I like you.”
You clasp your hand over your mouth, your eyes widening in surprise. Did you just-
You quickly bury your face in your arms, your face blazing. Your heart feels like it’s going to explode out of your ribcage, the embarrassment hitting you in waves.
You did not just confess, you did not, you did not-
“Y/N.” You refuse to look up, afraid of what you’d just done. You just confessed to your friend, your best friend! You feel tears well up in your eyes at the possibility of having ruined your friendship.
“Hey, look at me,” His voice is surprisingly gentle, not the tone you were expecting at all. You mentally count to ten in your head before gathering enough courage to look up at him. Your breath hitches in your throat as your eyes finally meet his, his face growing closer to yours.
“Can you repeat what you said?” He asks, not breaking eye contact with you as your body grows hot, keeping his gaze steady. The fireworks up in the sky are long forgotten as you visibly gulp before clearing your throat.
“I- I like you, Choi Sungyoon,” You muster out, willing yourself to not look away, “I like you a lot.”
The anticipation makes your stomach drop; you can hear your heart pounding wildly in your ear as you wait for his response. He gazes at you for a while before smiling.
“I like you, too.” He says easily, leaving you utterly shocked. He looks away as you gape at him, not believing your ears. He raises a hand to his nose, scratching it awkwardly.
“Wait- what- I-” Your mouth can’t keep up with your thoughts, your mind an absolute mess, “Did you- huh?”
It warms your heart when you finally catch the red glow of his ears- a shy Sungyoon wasn’t something you witnessed every day.
He shyly runs a hand through his hair, “I said I like you, too. And I have, for a while now.”
“Oh.” Your face quickly matches the shade of his ears, maybe even more so. But a wave of relief and giddiness passes through you and you can’t help but smile widely once the words process in your brain.
Because your best friend felt the same way about you.
You spend the rest of the night in comfortable silence, your heart still beating fast, but it’s a good kind of warmth that spreads through you, one that makes you feel like all is right in the world.
You don’t realize when he draws close, but suddenly your hands are touching, his shoulder grazes yours and his breath is right next to your ear. You slowly turn your head in his direction, your breath hitching upon realizing how close his face is to yours.
You close your eyes, grasping his hand as you take a deep breath and lean forward. When your lips meet, it’s like your heart is mimicking the explosion of the fireworks in the sky. All these feelings surge through you as you share a kiss, and you swear you’re flying.
As you part, you both look away shyly; your face is blazing, your heart still hammering in your chest. You don’t complain when he tugs on your arm and brings you close to him, letting you lean your head on his shoulder as you continue watching the sky together.

Pulgasari 1985
Published by www.grimoireofhorror.com and The Yurei 31/12/20
Since the division of Korea into two separate countries in 1948, North Korea have used its cinema to spread propaganda for their “Juche” or self-reliant ideology to the masses in the guise of entertainment, some of which, are more controversial than others.
Hey Y’all, Jim here with an article about the lesser-known Kaiju film, Pulgasari, released in North Korea in 1985, directed by South Korean director Shin Sang-ok who is known for other work such as A Flower in Hell (Jiokhwa, 1958) and The Red Scarf (Balgan mahura, 1964).
During the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) of feudal Korea, under the King’s (Pak Yong-hok)  harsh rule, his people are being subjected to misery and starvation. A local blacksmith (Ri Gwong) is imprisoned for trying to protect his people and, whilst imprisoned, makes a statue of a monster out of his last meal and calls upon the Earth and Sky gods for his creation to come to life and protect the peasants and rebels fighting the king’s army. After the statue comes into contact with the blacksmith’s daughter’s (Ri Jong-uk) blood, it transforms into a giant, iron eating monster known as Pulgasari. As the populace decide to unite in revolt against this tyranny, Pulgasari aids their struggle against the king to overthrow the monarchy but it's never-ending hunger soon becomes a problem for them. As the peasant's hand over their metal tools for working the land to try and stem the beast's eternal appetite, the blacksmith’s daughter realises she must use her blood to destroy the monster in order to save the people once again.
Although the film is based on an ancient Korean folklore, the film is said to be propaganda against western consumerism, the dangers of unchecked capitalism and the importance of the power of a collective and one’s role in said collective. Though it is speculated the director Shin Sang-ok left his own message in the interpretation of the film, the monster being Kim Il-sung, leader of North Korea at the time, using an uprising for his own personal benefit.
This film is controversial through the means that its director was ‘hired’. In 1978, North Korean intelligence agents kidnapped Shin Sang-ok's then ex-wife, actress Chio Eun-hee in January, 1978 on the orders of Kim Jong Il, then director of the Motion Picture and Arts Division of the Propaganda and Agitation Department, whilst in Hong Kong after she was offered a lucrative film role. Six months later, Shin was also kidnapped whilst in Hong Kong searching for her. Sung was kept unaware that Choi had been captured by North Korean agents and, after two failed escape attempts was subjugated to a prison sentence, after his release, he was finally reunited with Choi at a dinner party March, 1982. Kim Jong-il expressed that he wanted Shin to direct a film to enter in an international competition, knowing that the strong internal propaganda of his own films does not have the same appeal to an international audience, allowing Shin to take a more open approach to different subjects to garner spots in worldwide competitions. Some years later whilst on a trip to Vienna, under the pretence of finding a financial backer for Kim’s latest film, the pair managed to inform the US embassy that they were under duress and was seeking asylum. They managed to lose their caretakers and make it to the embassy, ending their ordeal in March, 1986.
Before their escape, Shin and Choi made a total of six films for Kim Jong-il, An Emissary of No Return (Doraoji annun milsa, 1984), Love, Love, My Love (Sarang sarang nae sarang, 1984), Runaway (Talchulgi, 1984), Salt (Sogum, 1985), The Tale of Shim Chong (Simcheongjeon, 1985) and their final film being Pulgasari (1985) which is said to have had the biggest budget. The special effects were done by the same Toho staff that worked on the Godzilla films, being tricked into thinking they were filming in China for an unrelated company.
The Film was released by Korean Film Studio in North Korea in 1985 but did receive an international release, being released in 1998 in Japan, 2000 in South Korea and had a US cinema release in New York as part of Columbia University Japanese culture center's year-long “Godzilla” festival in 2006, having a DVD release later in 2016.
The film is beautifully shot with great use of colour, amazing set designs and its soundtrack, portraying the struggle of the people very well. The special effects are very well done for the time and holds up very well by today’s standards with great character acting by Kenpachirô Satsuma, who started playing Godzilla in 1979’s Godzilla v’s The Smog Monster. It has great pacing, never seeming to slow down for story like other Kaiju films of the time, with huge medieval battle scenes against the Kaiju is a nice change to the usual formula. Though at times it seems like a family film, it has graphic depictions of peasants being beaten and tortured, capital punishment and actual animal remains that would suggest otherwise.
The film could have been just another obscure non-Japanese Kaiju film such as Yonggary 1967 from South Korea or Gorgo 1961 from UK/US but it has carved its own path as a unique and very enjoyable film and having gained a lot of attention over the years due to the shocking story of Shin and Choi’s eight-year detention really helped spread its reach to all over the world.
If you are a fan of Kaiju films, I would make some time to sit down and enjoy. This film is fully available to watch on YouTube for free with English subs.

sung vs choi family home (exterior)
word count: 591
tldr; who knew i had so much to say about the OUTSIDE of a house. sung’s family owns a House house. he doesn’t feel like it’s his, but he loves it anyway. sung’s parents fulfilling stereotypical masculine and feminine ‘roles’ part 928493
sung’s parents live in a single family home on the outskirts of seoul
he was a trainee when they bought the house, so it’s never felt completely like home. since he left his first home in gwangju, no place at All has managed to 100% give him that feeling of the place he spent the youngest of his adolescent years, though he’s gotten closer with time in his new idol life
nowadays, when his childhood home has been rented out to who knows how many people, his parents’ home is the closest thing he has to a family space
apartments are still what he’s used to, though, since yk, every other place he’s ever lived in has been an apartment
for his parents (mostly his dad), it was the peak of success to be able to buy a single-family style home for their family
it’s not a massive property, (in the span of the world, not sk where it Is quite big) as having it is already a luxury and the chois believe in managing waste
however, as it’s their dream property, they splurged
there is a fence that closes off the property, with a rounded driveway leading in and out
there isn’t grass, because of water waste, but there are litterings of plants, both in the ground and in planters, along with bird baths and feeders, and really cheesy sculptures
think the energy of a gnome holding a sign that says ‘live laugh gnome’ and you’ve got it
it’s very possible there is a gnome like that somewhere in the home storage
there’s also a picnic table and an outdoor grill that stays tucked away and covered the majority of the time. they only use the grill for special occasions, like larger family gatherings, or on days sung brings a friend over and his dad feels like showing off that he can cook too
as a trainee, when sung would enjoy doing school work, or trainee work at the picnic table, where he could enjoy the quiet of the outskirts in the fresh air
most of the neighbors are rental properties from richy-richs who want to profit off of foreigners, but the people who actually live in their homes are at least friendly with the chois
mrs choi usually ends up going around to their houses to give them leftovers of food she’s made (after sending her sons off with plenty first) and welcomes every new neighbor that she knows of with a pot of food as well
idk anything about house style names since i get all of my information on those from sims builders on youtube
it’s like if you take an american white picket fence house but then u make it more old. more brick-style. like take that and then put it in stereotypical old ass uk style
no that doesn’t make sense, but you’ve just gotta Imagine it alright
she’s a good size, two levels, but there’s a hint, a HINT, of cottagecore vibes on the outside. like you know these people have money but you also know when you walk inside you’re going to be very comfortable with the energy that has been created in that room
and that’s the goal, for anyone who comes to the choi family home to feel like it’s their home too
though sung tells this to others when he brings them over, he gets a pang in his heart when saying it, because it feels as if he’s lying, unable to completely take on the home as his own
