I’m going to be in Bend in October for a wedding - do you have any recommendations for day hikes/great in town restaurants or shopping/other activities for a long weekend visitor?
How fun!!! Depending on when in October, some of the most beautiful hikes in the Three Sisters Wilderness may not need permits (if after 10/15).
If you’re going to be in Bend after 10/15, I recommend any of the following day hikes (they are longer just FYI):
- Green Lakes (9.5 miles, moderate)
- South Sister (12 miles to summit- difficult- l but if you just wanted to climb to Moraine Lake, this hike is much shorter and easier, probably around 6-7 miles total)
- Broken Top to No Name Lake (12 miles- moderate to difficult)
If you don’t have time to do these long hikes, making it up to the alpine area is well worth it even if you don’t finish the full route.
If you’re in Bend before 10/15:
- Tumalo Mountain (4 miles, difficult)
- North Fork at Tumalo Falls (lots of waterfalls and can be however long you want… but if you climb to the valley it’s about 7 miles round trip)
- Shevlin Park (4 mile in town loop)
- Smith Rock (7 mile loop)
Other fun things:
- McMenamins- old catholic girls school turned restaurant/theater/hotel. Book reservations at the Turkish soaking pool, go find the hidden rooms and speakeasy in the hotel, enjoy a movie in the theater
- Tons of breweries. My fave hangouts are Monkless, 10 Barrel on Galveston, Sunriver on Galveston, Bend Brewing Club, or Boss Rambler
- Downtown shopping is fun. Right by the river and Mirror Pond. Lots of local shops and some tourist stuff too. Old Mill also has outdoor shopping but less local, more retail stores
- Food: Ariana, Active Culture, Rancher Butcher Chef, Spork, Pizza Mondo, El Sancho Tacos, Lucy’s Tacos, Bo’s Falafel (fave for bagels and brunch), McKay’s (brunch is okay, atmosphere is great), Sparrow (for brunch- get their breakfast croissant sandwich and/or ocean roll, there will be a line)
Hope you have a great time! ♥️

Update on vacation: Sunriver is very dry and hot 🥵 But I kinda like the climate change, I could live in a desert 🏜 I love exploring the town my honey grew up in every summer since he was our sons age and watching him experience with Jameson now 👶🏼💙
Sunriver pics so far. More to come as we are here until Friday. Jameson is 11 weeks old this week😮‍💨
Tumblr media
Ps. we are surviving the trip in one house with his entire family (whom are all pastors or members of the church his family owns)… so far so good you could say😅
Canoeing and mountain biking today…although last night we rode bike rides on the trails around the community and my legs are Jello now. We are going to the village and the water park tomorrow.
Not to mention I’m pumping every 3-4 hours and maintaining 50oz milk production a day even when on vacation this mamma works hard for her baby boy 🙏🏼💙
Anyway have a good day & enjoy the week 🌿🌞

2019 was intense. Our first year as homeowners. Three stateside tours. Four trips to Europe. A hiccup-riddled Australian tour. Six months with a busted vocal cord. A two-month gut bug. A new @russiancircles album. New collaborations between @sumacbandofficial and @keijihaino_official. Guest spots on Mamiffer and @newideasociety recordings. Sojourns in Kauai, NYC, and Sunriver. A much-needed reset in the form of a five-night camping trip. And all the inevitable crises and celebrations that don't get shared on social media. All in all, it was a good year, even if it felt a little out of control at times. It really felt like the close of a decade, the end of a chapter. Love to yall and may the New Year be full of hope and promise. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6y6qPspEhZ/?igshid=13oo2iehx8px2

We break down Sunriver Brewing Company's 2020 release calendar, so you don't have to.
Only a handful of days remain before 2019 takes its exit before 2020 enters. In its wake, 2019 takes not only the year in review but also the decade. That hasn’t stopped award-winning brewery, Sunriver Brewing Company, from strategizing for 202 with a lineup of beers that rivals those from 2019. So consider the following upcoming releases as part of your next grocery trip or, for the fortunate ones, your next trip to Sunriver Brewing Company.
Year Round *unless indicated, available in 12-ounce cans and draft.
Except for Deseo Mexican Lager, Sunriver Brewing Company is ensuring your favorite, year-round releases are available on draft or at your nearest bottle shop and grocery store. What this means is that fans of Fuzztail, Rippin, Vicious Mosquito, Cocoa Cow, or the newly indoctrinated Deseo; can enjoy more of what you like. Breaking it down, here are brief descriptions, ABV (alcohol by volume) and IBU (international bittering units) if this is your first time introduced to Sunriver Brewing Company.
Fuzztail Hefeweizen.5%. 20 IBU
Fuzztail is an American style hefeweizen that’s light and easy drinking, yet compelling.  A hand selected blend of NW hops give this hazy wheat beer a crisp citrus finish with notes of grapefruit and lemon.  This brew can be summed up in one word….refreshing.
Rippin Northwest Ale.6%. 50 IBU
Amazing dank hop flavor of an ipa, but the easy drinking nature of a pale ale is the greatness behind this ambiguous brew. Hefty whirlpool additions of citra, mosaic and amarillo® hops make this unique ale burst with ripe tropical fruit, freshly squeezed citrus and resinous pine. The finish is distinctly clean, crisp and hoppy, with a restrained bitterness.
Vicious Mosquito. 7%. 70 IBU
“Vicious” is Sunriver Brewing Company’s flagship West Coast styled India Pale Ale. The heavy handed use of the finest Northwest hops define this pungent, resinous brew. This hop attack is coming at you like the vicious mosquitos at our nearby Cascade Mountains.
Cocoa Cow Chocolate Milk Stout *only available on draft and in 16-ounce cans. 7%. 28 IBU
The Cocoa Cow is our interpretation of a classic milk stout but with the addition of roasted Ghana cocoa nibs.  Milk sugar and caramel malt build the rich, full body of this brew, with mild roasted notes coming from two varieties of chocolate malt.  Have some dessert today - just make sure it's served in a glass!
Deseo Mexican Lager *only available on draft
New from 2019, Sunriver Brewing Company is organizing their limited releases into three series; Haze Factory (a blend of Hazy India Pale Ales) and  Also Limited (composed of West Coast-style India Pale Ales, Fruit beers, and garden beers), and Double IPA Factory.
We love hops, plain and simple.  Sunriver Brewing Company has cultivated years of relationships with hop growers.  We walk the hop fields each fall and then hand-select only the finest Pacific Northwest varieties.  The end result of this process is presented in our limited release IPAs and double IPAs.
Breaking it down here's what you have to look forward to in 2020.
Haze Factory *available in both draft and 16-ounce cans
As part of a three-part, limited-edition series of releases; Sunriver Brewing Company is happy to release 12 Hazy India Pale Ales. If you're of the mind, there are 12 months in the year, then you're on the right track regarding how frequently the brewery will release a unique Hazy IPA. Details are scant but the brewery has confirmed the following names, in order of release, starting January 2020 and concluding December 2020:
Next Level, Emotional Support Peacock, Popular Demand, Formerly Known As, Everything's Right, Hugs and Flip Flops, The Life Above, Hawaiian Haze, Turtle In The Clouds, Zero Hour, Secret Galaxy Flight, and Vermont Vacation.
When comparing 2019's breakout IPA Factory series, we see the carry-over from 2019 are:
Emotional Support Peacock. 7%. 40 IBU. *2019
This hazy juice bomb delivers a brilliant display of tropical hop character. Vibrant notes of passionfruit, melon, citrus and papaya leap from this brew. HOPS: Citra, Mosaic, El Dorado, Citra Cryo, Mosaic Cryo
Hawaiian Haze.6.4%. 48 IBU. *2019
This POG inspired hazy IPA combines barley, malted wheat and flaked oats with an abundance of juicy hops. The end result is smooth, easy drinking and ridiculously tropical.  HOPS: Galaxy, Citra, Mandarina Bavaria, Lotus Other Ingredients: Passionfruit, Tangerine, Guava
Vermont Vacation.6.8%. 40 IBU *2019
This hazy IPA combines barley, malted wheat and flaked oats with an abundance of juicy hops. A distinctly hoppy brew, Vermont throws a lush melon character, with background notes of citrus and pineapple. HOPS: Citra, Huell Melon, El Dorado, Sultana
Double IPA Factory *only on draft
Back from 2019, the Double IPA Factory pays homage to both hazy and West Coast-style Double India Pale Ales. Breaking it down and in order, look for the following six releases, with a different one released two months after the previous. Note, we have provided the descriptions, ABV (alcohol by volume), and IBU of any releases which have been carried over to 2020 from 2019.
Thunderstruck
Resin Nation West Coast Double India Pale. 8.5%. 100 IBU. *2019
We brought the big guns to this resinous party - Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops all make a big appearance.  This double IPA is hopped to the max with layers of earthy pine oil, dank tropical fruit, fresh citrus and blueberries.  A moderately malty backbone supports hopping rates of nearly 8 pounds per barrel.
Parkes and Wreck Hazy Double India Pale Ale. 8.2%. 70 IBU. *2019
This big, hazy brew is an homage to Steve Parkes, instructor at the American Brewers Guild. Parkes and Wreck is brewed with British pale malt, Barbarian ale yeast and a ton of juicy, dank hops.
8th Anniversary
Tangible Power
Mele Kalikimaka
Also Limited *avaialble on draft only
Finally, the brewery is set to release the following Pale Ales, India Pale Ales, and Winter Ales; as part of the brands Also Limited series. Look for the following, in order starting in January, each month throughout 2020.
Keep Oregon Green IPA, Cryosaurus IPA, Howdy! IPA, T'Rippin Tangerine NW Pale Ale, Missing Link IPA, Electric Avenue Session IPA, Sounds Like Summer Garden Ale, Bondi Beach Party Pale Ale, Green Initiative Fresh Hop IPA, D'Kine Fresh Hop IPA, Shred Winter Ale, and Cousin Eddie's Leisure Suit IPA.
Of those in the list, the following were released in 2019.
Green Initiative Fresh Hop IPA. 6.5%. 55 IBU. *2019
Strata is a recent graduate of the OSU Aroma Hop Breeding Program. Formerly OR-X331, Strata throws intense flavors of passionfruit, candied grapefruit, strawberry and cannabis.
D'Kine Fresh Hop IPA.6.5%. 60 IBU *2019
This fresh hop IPA uses over 100 pounds of fresh Mosaic hops provided by our friends at B.T. Loftus Ranches in Yakima, WA.  These unique "wet" hops provide layers of tropical fruit, citrus, salted blueberry and earthy-pine flavors.  Enjoy this once a year hop harvest brew!

About Sunriver Brewing Company
Sunriver Brewing Company’s pub in the Village at Sunriver opened to rave reviews in the summer of 2012. Recognizing that the original pub would not accommodate demand, a 13,000-square foot building was purchased in the Business Park in 2014. Since that time, Sunriver Brewing Company has garnered many national and international awards for their craft beer. In February of 2016, Sunriver opened its second pub location on Galveston Avenue in Bend Oregon. The year of 2017 included a major national accomplishment with winning Small Brewing Company of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival.

what's your favorite memory of me?
ok i’m going to do three because idk if i can pick just one:
freshman year spanish class when you couldn’t stop laughing during your presentation because that’s like my first memory of you
literally the entirety of the texas trip but for whatever reason the moment that’s sticking out right now is when we facetimed jarod and were standing in front of the camera with our arms up trying to look all “tough”
and sunriver when you fell off your bike because that was just a really funny moment that i think i’ll remember forever and there’s nothing quite like hearing someone yelling my name and then turning around to see a pair of legs sticking out from behind a tree :)

When I find myself in a creative rut... feeling like my work is becoming predictable... I try to go out and break every rule I’ve made for myself. Lucky for me, Sony puts on an annual event each year called Kando Trip I think for the sole purpose of giving us (Sony Artisans and Collective) a chance to shoot without the expectations or confinement of a art director or client. We get to borrow/test new gear, take a model, and just go out and create... with no obligations to deliver anything to a client. In this test shoot with super cool model @queeenkatie... I attempted to break all of my rules. I used only one zoom lens (24-70mm f/2.8 GM) when I typically shoot with a bunch of primes, I shot in direct sun when I typically shoot in open shade, and I intentionally looked for a location I thought no photographer would choose. Do you notice a difference? Would love your thoughts! @sonyalpha #sonykandotrip #bealpha (at Sunriver, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1Z4Yoygi-Y/?igshid=h192o9zra94t

Took our first mini trip to test the waters of rv life.  Stayed at Thousand Trails Park in Bend/Sunriver, then spent the day lounging and swimming at the Wickiup Reservoir. All in all, I think we’re feeling more and more confident about this endeavor every day. Zant seems to be taking to the rv life pretty well.

March 26, 2017 | 085/365
I awoke this morning to falling snow and a heavy dusting on the ground in Sunriver. It was beautiful yet surprising. They had an  overdose of 90 inches this year. It quickly turned to rain and has been raining ever since making it less fun to hang outside as I enjoy doing.
Coffee. A walk with Radar. More coffee. Trip to Home Depot for some supplies but an otherwise quiet day where I was forced to 'be'.
This evening I took a walk in the rain and got decently wet but wanted to get out in the fresh mountain air.
I am ready for a little ray of sunshine.

Bend
Chatting with a friend about how terrifying it is to say goodbye to everything you know, and everything that is comfortable, and everything that is easy, to try something new (Hi, Irissa!). I’ve never been the most adventurous person and my personality actually craves consistency and the dependable. So the first few weeks of this trip (and if I’m honest, every few weeks since we’ve been gone) were (and occasionally continue to be) really hard.
I couldn’t pick up the phone to call my Mom (which I wanted to on several occasions) because just the thought of talking to her made me sob. I remembered a talk I heard one time about how you should never call or write home if all you have are negative things to say because it frames your situation in a way that is impossible to change. I heeded that advice and waited until I had my first really *great* day in Bend to call home. It took a while for that to happen, mainly due to the unreal amount of snow and ice on the ground, causing us to fall down multiple times while walking anywhere and get our car stuck every time we tried to get groceries or go on a hike.
Tumblr media
The first *great* day was after I had gone to my first yoga class, something I hadn’t ever done by myself, and Dave and I had gotten drinks at a Brewery afterwards and chatted with some locals. After that evening, I was finally ready to share some of my experiences with the people I care about most. And I think I was ready to embrace the city for all it has to offer. Which is a lot, despite having over 18 inches of snow dump on us the day after we arrived, and it being January. So without further adieu, here’s what we found in Bend after a month.
Hikes: Deschutes National Forest: There are miles of forest available for off-leash hiking with your dog, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and more. We opted just to do a short hike due to not having any proper equipment. We were not disappointed.
Tumblr media
Sahalie Falls/Clear Lake: After googling some sweet hikes, we decided to try and head to Clear Lake, about an hour from Bend. We didn’t realize that the several feet of snow on the ground might have any impact on our hikes. We weren’t discouraged though, especially after landing at Sahalie Falls and finding this view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clear Lake was virtually deserted and so Dexter got to have an off-leash experience. We could only hike on paths that had been packed down by other hikers and snowshoers, and Dexter found out the hard way several times what happens if you deviate from the path. You wind up thigh-high in snow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumalo Falls: Our friend Alex made the long trek out West to visit us and we opted to hike Tumalo Falls one day while he was in town. The road to the Falls is closed so you have to hike 2.5 miles on the road to see it. Totally worth it.
Tumblr media
Alex explored the area while Dave and I worked (gotta pay for these AirBnB’s!) and mentioned Smith Rock State Park is amazing. We were sad to have missed it.
Pilot Butte: This is an easy 1 mile up, 1 mile down hike right in the center of town. We went on a sunny day and could see for miles. Bring your yaktraks, folks! Dave and I were slippin' and slidin' all over the place. Fun times. Also this picture is awful because we only had my phone and it only takes selfies and is v old.
Tumblr media
LaPine State Park: We hiked to the “Big Tree,” the biggest tree in Oregon. In theory, this was an easy hike. However, we opted to try it on a rainy day where the snow caved beneath our feet constantly. Not so easy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shevlin Park: A gorgeous park 5 minutes from the city. We did a 5 miler in the snow with Dexter and he didn’t move the rest of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beverages: Bend has no shortage of coffee shops and breweries. Some of our favorite coffee shops included Bluebird, which had a London Calling tea latte that will blow your mind. We frequented Backporch Coffee Roasters as it was a short walk from our apartment, and Spoken Moto, this amazing combination motorcycle garage/coffee shop that also serves beer. Dave was in heaven. I think his heart is still there, smelling that grease and drinking way too many iced coffees.
Tumblr media
We attempted the Bend Ale Trail, which involves hitting 10 of the 20 million breweries in Bend. While we didn’t get to them all (our livers thank us), we did stop by 10 Barrel, Silver Moon (Katie’s favorite), Sunriver, Crux (another favorite), McMenimans, and Deschutes.
Tumblr media
Both times we went to Silver Moon they had something awesome going on- the first trip was to see Lief Whitaker talk about climbing Mount Everest twice and the second time was to come in last place during Trivia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We tried to take pictures of McMenimans’, this huge brewery/restaurant/movie theater/hot tub/outdoor complex but they didn’t turn out. We went to a High Gravity brew fest here and enjoyed the fact that many of the bars and restaurants have outdoor fire pits where you can drink and eat outside regardless of the temperature.
We also made sure to try some of the beer from other breweries, including Upworthy, Cascade Lakes, Goodlife, and Boneyard. All delicious. Personal favorite: Silvermoon’s 97 IPA. Tastes like home.
Food: We really tried our best to not spend all of our money on food in Bend. We ate the most amazing brussels sprouts at Crux Brewing Company, had some delicious burgers at Brother John’s Ale House, and the best brunch ever (?) at Chow (thanks for the recommendation and gift card, Mikey and Lauren!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other mentions: Thanks to Dave’s Brother Kevin and his wife Steph, we went on this awesome tour called Shoes, Views and Brews on Mt. Bachelor, the big mountain in the area best known for skiing. We snowshoed, stopped and tried different beers from local breweries, and got to catch some amazing views. This was unlike anything we’ve done and so worth it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got to attend a free teacher training put on by the National Forest in Bend all about teaching outdoor education in early childhood education. It was an amazing program that allowed me to see how schools out West are incorporating the outdoors into their daily curriculum- nerd moment.
We also tried to go to this K-9 keg pull, a race where a bunch of dogs pull kegs around. We drove out to the race only to find out it was cancelled due to the weather. #bummer.
That’s it and that’s all. ’Til next time, Bend.

Maggie - 2.5 (Fall 2017)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You love to sneak into my office and play with my pens and anything you can find!
Tumblr media
Your first trick-or-treating. You insisted on the Ariel mermaid costume, even though it was too big and you looked like you were about to trip every 2 seconds. I held my breath the whole time! But you are so coordinated and kept your balance chasing after Owen and Parker! You went to so many houses then your little body was just done. Tears on the way home, and a BIG SLEEP that night.
Tumblr media
Our summer trip with the Moodys to Leavenworth. We played in the river the first day (I forgot your swimsuit in the car!).
Tumblr media
You and Lucy just LOVE each other. You like to FaceTime each other and play play play when we visit.
Tumblr media
You want to hold Audrey all the time. You won’t let anyone else have her! You just sit so quiet and calm, and are the best cousin.
Tumblr media
Trip to Sunriver 2017!
Tumblr media
Meeting Audrey for the first time at the pool! You didn’t hesitate. You were SO gentle and immediately gave her kisses and “ugga muggas”.
Tumblr media
All your little personalities in one photo ;)
Tumblr media
Crazy hair like mama!
Tumblr media
We could not be more in love with you! Maggie I don’t know how to start describing you. You are a force and a light. As your Dad says “everyone should wake up like Maggie”. You are SUCH a good sleeper. We put you down around 7pm and you’ll sleep 12, sometimes 13 hours. When you wake up you start singing, then one of us will go into your room to get you out of your crib. You greet us with a smile and say “I wake up!”. You’re immediately ready to start your day with curiosity and excitement.
Everything is “I do it myself”. You want to do everything we’re doing, and your brother is doing, yourself but you’re so sweet about it all too. You’re non-stop movement.
You are a little mom. I don’t know if it’s from watching me, or your daycare teachers, or just you, but you LOVE to take care of babies. You constantly push your dolls around in the toy stroller, tuck them in, and give them bottles. At school, the teachers say you know your classmates’ coats, shoes, and backpacks and you help them find them at the end of the day.  You’re so empathetic. You genuinely ask “you okay?” when people are hurt.
Your means of getting around is jumping. You just JUMP. It’s hilarious.
You play the victim a little bit. Owies are a big deal. If you bonked your head 3 days ago, you continue to recount the experience and ask for a band-aid or “hice pack”.
You’re ALWAYS getting into my purse. Now you’re extra sneaky about it too! You wait until I’m in the other room then you go get it, pull out my wallet, ALL my credit cards, and cash, and help yourself to the mints and lipstick.
Our bedtime routine is so sweet. You take a bath with your brother, then we go upstairs and sit in the rocking chair. You want 2 books, then (in THIS order) we sing Jingle Bells, Twinkle Twinkle, You Are My Sunshine, then the “Pie Song” (from the movie Waitress). We “rock a lil bit” after, then you point to your crib and say “cib”. You go right in and conk out like a champ.
MAGGIE-ISMS At dinner you say “I wanna sit your lap” (you only want to eat sitting in my lap) “Pack-back” how you say backpack You insist on us singing “Jingle Bells” before bed. This started in September. “Wash the crying” is what you say after a tantrum and you want me to dry your eyes
Tumblr media
Fearless with your first pumpkin carving!
Tumblr media
Always carrying your babies...
Tumblr media
At the pumpkin patch! You were a little scared to go down the slide, so you waited like this at the bottom for Owen and Parker (”I catch them”). Always the little mom!
Tumblr media
YOU. We love you so much!
Tumblr media
Fixing dinner, I heard the water running and ran in. Found you like this! You wanted to wash your hands by yourself. You are such a daredevil!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely a mama’s girl and I EAT IT UP. You’re getting to the point where it’s hard to hold you for a long time, but I keep trying. Just want to hold on to every last minute of your babyhood!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More jumping! Every time you see purple clothes you say “Go Huskies!”. We’ve trained you well...
