TPG acquires majority stake in health information network Surescripts
- By InnoNurse Staff -
Private equity firm TPG has acquired a majority stake in Surescripts, a leading health information network, to boost investments in its technology and explore potential mergers and acquisitions.
Financial details were not disclosed, and the deal is pending regulatory approval. Surescripts, which dominates the e-prescribing market, is co-owned by pharmacy associations and major pharmacy benefit managers like Express Scripts and CVS Caremark.
CEO Frank Harvey stated that TPG’s involvement will accelerate Surescripts’ efforts to improve healthcare by enhancing e-prescribing, addressing administrative burdens, and expanding into areas like data analytics and AI. With TPG’s financial backing, the company plans to scale its existing solutions and pursue strategic acquisitions. Despite private equity’s growing influence in healthcare, the deal may avoid the scrutiny that large corporate acquisitions often face.
Surescripts connects millions of healthcare professionals, facilitating billions of transactions, and aims to continue transforming healthcare intelligence sharing. The company settled an antitrust case with the FTC in 2023 regarding monopolization of the e-prescribing market.

Improved access to healthcare: Telemedicine allows patients to consult with healthcare professionals remotely, eliminating geographical barriers and improving access to medical care. This is particularly beneficial for individuals living in rural or underserved areas where healthcare facilities may be limited.
Convenience and flexibility: Telemedicine provides convenience to patients by eliminating the need for travel and long waiting times at clinics or hospitals. Patients can have virtual consultations from the comfort of their homes or workplaces, saving time and reducing the burden of scheduling appointments.
Timely medical assistance: Telemedicine enables timely medical assistance, especially for urgent or time-sensitive cases. Patients can receive quick medical advice, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations without the need to wait for in-person appointments.
Continuity of care: Telemedicine facilitates continuous and ongoing healthcare management. Patients can have follow-up visits, monitor chronic conditions, and receive prescription refills through virtual consultations, ensuring they receive consistent care even if they cannot physically visit a healthcare facility.
Cost-effective healthcare delivery: Telemedicine has the potential to reduce healthcare costs for patients. It eliminates travel expenses, reduces hospital readmissions, and decreases the overall burden on the healthcare system. It can also be a cost-effective option for healthcare providers, enabling them to reach more patients without the need for extensive infrastructure.
Remote monitoring and health tracking: Telemedicine allows for remote monitoring of patients' vital signs, health conditions, and progress. With the help of wearable devices and remote monitoring tools, healthcare providers can gather real-time data and make informed decisions about patient care.
Outbreaks and emergencies: During pandemics or other health emergencies, telemedicine plays a critical role in minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. It helps in triaging patients, providing initial assessments, and guiding them on appropriate next steps, reducing the burden on hospitals and preventing overcrowding.
Overall, telemedicine offers a range of benefits that address challenges in healthcare delivery, improve access to medical services, and enhance patient outcomes, making it increasingly necessary in today's healthcare landscape.

Work has been kind of boring since Tech C and I figured out the whole problem with the surescripts program that’s been eating the communications between me and the LC doctors. We’re finally getting responses, I don’t have to email her every day with 10-20 meds that need refills, things are running super smoothly.
Except like too super smoothly because I’ve been getting all my follow ups done before noon for two weeks. This morning I had all of my follow ups done before I’d been at work for an entire hour. So like, besides releasing holds (takes roughly 15 minutes) and doing my 2-week report (takes at most 45 minutes), I had nothing to do today except watch triage and study.
For seven hours.
Like I’m all for literally being paid to study on company time, but I really need something more to do because my whole shift shouldn’t just be studying and watching triage trickle in.

This last year I was asked to participate in one of the most bizarre and engaging projects of my design/art career. I was tasked by Surescripts to take old and broken fax machines and rebuild them into something more useful. This is an article that tells some of this story and shows off some of the work we did. Click the link in my bio to my links page to access the article from there. I will also be joining @surescripts on Linkedin next Tuesday the 17th at 11am EST for a live interview on the project. You all are welcome to check it out! . #thepxsmith #joshaweston #maker #faxmachine #artifax #robots #cyberpunk #artistinterview #project #photoessay (at Hanahan, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHgeh7ejQhL/?igshid=2e2xbl3qzvkx
