what we know about storm (2024)

coming in october is storm’s new solo, written by murewa ayodele with art by lucas werneck! in the weeks since it was announced, so many hints have been dropped and information revealed that it’s hard to keep track, but i wanted to at least try. under the cut is a list of confirmed information and hints. all of these things can be found on twitter. hopefully having this list will encourage excitement and some cool theories!

murewa ayodele (i am iron man) and lucas werneck (sins of sinister) team up to let a sprawling action-adventure thriller steeped deep in the marvel universe. dominance over a living rage planet in a solar system not so far away, fights against menacing dark spells from africa, political slow boils that span nations, the rescue of innocents from dangerous sea battles, and more.

ororo monroe has lived many lives. she has been the leader of the x-men, queen of wakanda, regent of arakko, and avenger. but before she was any of these, she was a god. in this series, she will become one once again… and perhaps something more. welcome to the labors of storm — where even the physical embodiment of the universe, eternity, cannot keep his eyes away — not until his plans for an eternal storm are made real — even if it will unalive our dear protagonist in the process.

here’s what we know:

first issue has some first appearances (frenzy and some avengers). she’ll be handling a "major meltdown" at a nuclear facility in oklahoma city.

interactions between eternity and ororo are vital to the series.

animal symbolism (hippos & lions) relating to her divinity, emphasis on hippos. something cute to balance out the action and heartbreak.

dark magic plays a significant role in issues #2-4.

issues #5 and #6 feature high-stakes action. ayodele compared them to battles in manga.

confirmed issue titles: "sick day" and "oblivion waits no longer"

appearances from doctor doom (issue #1), scott (issue ?), death (issue #5), iron man (issue #1), rogue (issue ?), oblivion (issue #5), and kwannon (issue ?).

from ayodele’s understanding, ororo is acting as the mutant voice on the avengers

going to see three layers: cosmic destiny, protector of earth (and what that entails), and personal life.

editorial mandates: she must be in atlanta, involved in international politics, trying to be a solo hero, and sharing her with the avengers.

one of the main focuses of the run is figuring out why she wants to go solo rather than be part of a team and how she adjusts to that.

another main focus is what do cosmic forces (eternity, etc.) want with her.

conflict with charles does come up (interviewer jokingly referred to him as her nemesis and he said that comes up)

going to include backstories but hopes to move those narratives forward

she has a secondary costume. one for daily hero things, another for when things get tough.

the second arc is where the avengers appear the most

use of cryokinesis in the first issue

I’m really excited about Storm on the avengers starting issue 17. I feel like it’s a good place for her if they’re serious about her being a solo hero bc the avengers are mostly solo heroes and they tend not to have as much a focus on who is the definitive leader. Probably better than having her inexplicably play second fiddle to cyclops or rogue. Also feels like a good indication that things will remain cordial with the x men

Do you have any hopes for her relationship with Wanda or any of the other members?

I'm not sure how to feel. Ewing's treatment of the character is going to be an incredibly hard act to follow, and I'm finding it difficult to muster excitement for... really anything to do with From The Ashes. Fortunately, Ororo's Krakoan era arc has actually reached a satisfying conclusion, which is more than we can say most characters, but it's just going to be really hard for me to see her leave Arakko behind. She was the best, most fully realized version herself that we've seen in decades, and she grew into a unique, special leadership role that was all hers. I want to see more of that. I want to see that version of Ororo carried forward in a meaningful way. I do not think that's going to happen in Avengers-- it's just not the right book for it, so I'm placing most of my hopes for post-Krakoa Ororo on the Storm solo title. Unfortunately, we don't know much about that book just yet.

Having said all of that, I do agree that putting Storm on an X-Men team book would probably have been a mistake, at least for now, at the beginning of this era. Based on what we know of the general premise and direction of From The Ashes, I think any of these ensemble titles would have stifled Ororo at her current elevation and caliber-- and these teams are not going to be the place where she can do the most good for mutantkind. Again, the Avengers are not, probably, the place for that either, which is why I'm more looking forward to the solo title, but Avengers will allow her to maintain a larger presence, and with MacKay pulling double duty on X-Men, there will hopefully be some coordination and sensitivity to mutant affairs.

What am I looking forward to? Developing a sincere Wanda/Ororo friendship. Reviving her history and chemistry with Thor-- I'm not pulling for romance, but I think they're great characters to have on a page together. Speaking of romance, I hope that MacKay puts Storm T'Challa's history to rest in a way that's respectful to both characters and resolves any remaining baggage. I'm not interested in that pairing at all-- especially not if we can keep Craig of NASA around!-- but I think both characters are really important to people and I understand why it was a big moment. I don't see it in 616 Ororo's future, but maybe the new Ultimate universe will do something better.

"Did you just sign 'angry penis'?" Sam says, distracted from his unresolved sexual tension with Natasha.

"Whatever," Kate says. She flips her hair. "I'm learning."

Last half of Phase 3! The one I've been waiting for! Let's go!

Black Panther: I don't know if it comes from a place of bias where I'm just excited to see a black superhero movie in the marvel/avengers franchise, but I really enjoyed this movie. It definitely could've besn shorter though. We didn't need a movie over two hours. I liked the antagonist again because once again it doesn't come from nothing. It made sense. I understood both sides. I understand the actor who played T'Challa died, but I'm actually interested in the sequel. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't take inspiration from Lion King. Marvel movies still haven't made me cry, but that end fight made me a little sad.

Infinity War: Ahhhhhh, here it is! What I've been waiting for! This movie did nothing, but piss me off. But they did get a few teardrops out of me from the "I don't feel so good, Mr. Stark." But you can't tell me with how close everybody was to each other, no one didn't inhale a little human dust.

Captain Marvel: Apparently this isn't crucial to endgame so I'm going to watch this after

Endgame: 3 HOURS??? I hate time travel, inception, and heist type movies. But somehow they made it work where it wasn't absolutely hateable. I'll be honest I actually did cheer during the final battle sequence. And more than a few tears were taken out of me. This was a decent wrap up for the avengers.

I finished the avengers film series (for the most part shhhh) and... It wasn't the greatest thing I've watched. In fact, I have a lot of complaints. But I know the people reading this are going to be fans so let me just say some good parts. Visuals/CGI was incredible. They intertwined the universes very well. Their marketing was good to hype people up for the next movie.

However, I think they just stopped understanding the characters they wanted to portray. Like it won't be exactly like the comics, I understand. But it felt like the characters weren't solidly maintained. Some things felt out of character, personalities kept switching, and it started to get sloppy that the characters felt two dimensional by the end of the series. Once again, my opinion. My take on this. And another thing! Always know your audience. Despite what anyone thinks, every movie has a certain audience it's intended for. Of course other audiences might find interest in it, but you specifically focus on the audience that you wanted to watch. My guess for the intended audience at the beginning of this is white males probably 20-40 years old. Presumably straight. And then the intended audience started going everywhere. It definitely took a turn to kid audiences, but also trying to keep that original audience. And also sometimes it seemed for female audiences (presumably straight). It worked out for them, I guess. But like it really irritated me because if you intend for a certain audience, you need to try and maintain that. I lost interest when it seemed like they were trying to please everybody or switched intended audience. By the end, I genuinely can't tell who this series is for.

But it was a chill series for the most part. Probably won't watch any of the solo movies again. Maybe I could watch The Avengers, Winter Soldier (not technically solo to me, and Infinity War. But like I can't go through the other ones again. This is probably not the outcome you guys wanted from me, but from the start I said I'm not a fan of superhero movies. So... Probably wasn't going to change much with this. But I can definitely appreciate the franchise's costuming, design, and behind the scenes stuff! This is the end to my avengers binge watch! Thank you for being a part of the journey!

marvel comics has gotten to a point where they're self-aware that they keep dragging Ororo out of her communities w/ other black people to go deal with white x-men's bullshits and i'm left to wonder. would it be better if her story had nothing to do w/ them at all. if she had always been her own solo hero.

wouldn't it be much more fun to read a story of a living goddess going out to try to make the best not only for her people, but for other black people around the world? T'Challa and Sam get to be solo heroes and heroes for black people, Ororo deserved that too, and so did black girl fans. I want to see that scene of small black kids wanting to be like her and little black girls dressing up as her for halloween, I want her to have her own supporting cast and mythos like her DC equivalent, Diana. But I guess I expect too much of the company that would only hire black women for the first time in the late 2010s.

Chadwick would've wanted it to be the role the character T'Challa to live on he knew what the character T'Challa meant. T'Challla was created in 1966 during the Civil Rights Era by Jack Kirby to Stan Lee. T'Challa is the FIRST mainstream Leading Black/African superhero. T'Challa has been the focal point even integral to the world of Black Panther and to his nation Wakanda. T'Challa was created to be positive Black Representation he wasn't no side kick; he didn't speak in a stereotypical jive tone or have stereotype features. The whole idea is if the rumor of T'Challa Jr or whatever they call the Child he has with Nakia come true that's an issue. One reason we don't want a Jr. is because of racial stereotypes the fatherless Black Child trope is a no then you have the single independent strong Black Woman. Those things hurt Black people in the long run it only reinforces those stereotypes which is not our reality. Chadwick was fired for standing up against Stereotypes, so I doubt he'd be happy or fine with them adding in two.

His widow even said, "It really was the most powerful piece of work that Chad was able to lay the FOUNDATION for." What do you do with a foundation? You build off it you, so by not recasting and killing TChalla you're killing a legacy and letting the foundation he created be wasted.

No, we don't want Killmonger back nor do we care about the mantle or who takes up the mantle we care about the character beneath the mantle. We care about T'Challa, we're also asking to not use according to the leaks T'Challa will pass away via sickness aka using Chadwick's real-world illness as part of their story which is insulting, disrespectful, distasteful and disingenuous if said rumors are true. Chadwick Boseman's real-world death/ilness as part of the plot. We also don't need a film to teach us or show us how to grieve we see Black Death every day and many have become so desensitized to it. They should've recasted if they wanted to grief take time off reshuffle the film, they did it to make themselves feel better which might trigger someone else. Honestly that is selfish if that's the type of film you're cool with that's you I personally can't get down with that. We don't know what kind of person T'Challa would've been as a father as a King or Husband, he was reunited with his family after the blip for 5 years. On top of all that we don't know how he will deal with the people of Wakanda after opening the boarders, are his people for it or against it how will he deal with it we don't know because his story hasn't fully been explored or told. The most we have seen of T'Challa is him in cameos and only one solo film and him in the what if series without the mantle of Black Panther because it's not about the mantle it's about the character himself. Unless this film is set during the blip it won't make sense. Otherwise, how will you explain killing off a perfectly healthy and alive character?

A tributes as they're calling it don't sell tickets it doesn't market or profit off a dead man's image. That's explotive recently its come out the cast and crew took their new cast and crew to see Chadwick's grave.

Honor: How are you Honoroing Chadwick by killing off the character he brought to life, as his brother Derrick Boseman said he honored them by making sure they had a career.

So if they did want to honor him, they'd recast T'Challa to give someone else the opportunity to honor Chadwick by taking on the character he brought to life in turn them having a career as a lead alongside Shuri as lead. But no, they're going to kill off his character putting his family back through that trauma. That's not how you honor him that's how you dishonor him and how legacies die. They say they were Chadwick's friend but you're fine with killing off the character your friend brought to live. That don't sound like a friend to me, I could never do that to a friend I want to honor and respect.

What people have to understand is T'Challa isn't dead, people have separate the actor from the character. Chadwick Boseman has passed on the character T'Challa hasn't.

People don't care about mantles of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, it's always been about the character beneath that role. Just like no one cares about the 007 mantle it's James Bond they care about the same applies here anyone can take the mantle we don't care it's about the character beneath the mantle we care about with all that being.
