Review: The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik

The Golden Enclaves is the third and last book in Naomi Novik’s Scholomance trilogy. I reviewed the first book, A Deadly Education, a few weeks ago. I did read the second book in the series, The Last Graduate, but I didn’t write a review for it before I read The Golden Enclaves. And to be honest, The Golden Enclaves was such a wild ride that I feel like I can’t properly do justice to The Last Graduate if I write a review for it now, so I’ll only be talking about The Golden Enclaves. This does mean that there will be some pretty major spoilers for both The Last Graduate and The Golden Enclaves, so proceed with caution!
The Golden Enclaves picks up right where the previous book left off. El and her friends have successfully executed their world-saving plan, made it out of the Scholomance, and killed off most of the monsters in the world, but at a cost: Orion is now trapped in the Scholomance, floating in the void. Grieving and traumatized, El turns around and marches right back into the Scholomance, but all is not how she left it, because being trapped in the Scholomance has changed Orion. El, Aadhya, Liu, and Liesel (the newest addition to their group) set off on an epic quest to find a cure for Orion. On her journey to save her friend, El uncovers terrifying truths about enclaves, the creation of maw-mouths, Orion’s past, and her own family. El and her friends must overcome all odds to prevent an all-out war between the enclaves of the world.
The Golden Enclaves was an absolute roller-coaster of an adventure. The plot twists and revelations one after the other as well as the gripping story made this book impossible to put down. It was so satisfying how Novik tied up loose ends, building on clues and connections from the first two books that I hadn’t noticed to lead to an absolutely thrilling climax. I appreciated how much Novik lives up to the old adage “Show, don’t tell.” Whereas some books rely on rambling monologues and inner turmoil to push the reader to feel certain emotions, The Golden Enclaves shows you how to feel perhaps a little too well. It was absolutely horrifying (to say the least) when I finally found out the secret behind enclaves, maw-mouths, and Orion’s family. Even though the book does explore El’s inner struggle, it’s never overdone or dragged on, leaving the reader to form their own emotional response. Because of how expertly the plot of this book tied into those of the first two books to build up to the final conflict, I wasn’t resentful at all at the happy ending. After everything the characters went through and discovered, I thought they deserved it. And after investing so much emotional energy into this series, I thought I deserved to see a happy ending as well.
Something I’ve come to appreciate over the course of this trilogy is the author’s ability to create powerful and morally gray characters. Even though El plays the role of the stereotypical chosen one, she is not painfully modest or self-deprecating and knows exactly what she’s capable of. I’ve read so many stories where the main character is either wracked with self-doubt or just doesn’t even acknowledge their own power, so it was refreshing to finally see a main character who is aware of their own capabilities. And despite El’s confidence in her powers, she’s never arrogant, she understands her own limits and shortcomings, and she knows to rely on her friends. This already sets her apart from many other fictional heroes and makes the entire book more mature and realistic, because as a reader, I always get super annoyed when the main character is unable to get out of their own head and be practical. El, on the other hand, is the epitome of practical. She is affected by grief and trauma just like a regular person, but she is also smart and able to think through her decisions—or at least choose to surround herself with people whom she can rely on to stop her from being reckless. The maturity with which this book approaches these ultra-powerful characters allows the author to explore the stickier, more complicated sides of the situation. When a character is already so powerful, whether or not to use their abilities become a question of morality, which El struggles with throughout the books. I loved how her mother is a huge influence on her development, and how El chooses to take the same path her mother did, despite the two of them being so different, because she finally realizes what she truly wants.
Speaking of morality aned ethics, this book also does a great job at dealing with morally gray characters. The main conflict of The Golden Enclaves is basically a magical reimagining of the trolley problem: given the choice, would you choose to sacrifice one person to guarantee the safety of your family? Or would you choose to take the moral high ground and watch as your children are slaughtered by monsters? There’s no one “bad guy” in this book, which makes it so much easier to become invested in the story. Ophelia Lake, the main antagonist of this book, has done some pretty unspeakable things, but her actions are still understandable, because she’s just doing what everyone else is—trying to survive and protect her loved ones. This is actually more relatable and understandable than the typical villain with a sad backstory, because most people would do anything to protect their families.
Overall, this book was an absolutely wild and amazing conclusion to the Scholomance trilogy. The story is original, well-paced, and gripping, and the characters are just as snarky, smart, and fun as they have been for the first two books. Novik has created an incredible fantasy world with a magic system that is unique, intriguing, and oddly realistic. The Golden Enclaves was a truly fitting end to this unforgettable trilogy.

TCPL Packaging expands Indian footprint with scalable Chennai plant
Mumbai-based listed company TCPL Packaging, has strengthened its operational footprint with a new facility in Chennai, designed to support long-term growth. The site is built for scalability, allowing for future additions as demand rises. With more than 20 printing lines already in operation across its network of plants across India, TCPL Packaging expects Chennai to become a key contributor to revenue in the coming years.
Dedicated to paperboard carton production, the facility improves TCPL’s logistics and service capabilities, meeting the growing demand for sustainable packaging in Southern India. Marking a major milestone in the company’s long-term growth strategy, the inauguration ceremony of the new unit was held at the Trident in Chennai on 6 March 2025. Packaging South Asia took a tour of the plant on 7 March.
“The commissioning of our Chennai greenfield facility marks a key milestone in our growth journey. This expansion augments our ability to serve customers in a high-potential market while supporting our long-term vision for scalability and industry leadership,” Saket Kanoria, managing director, TCPL Packaging, said.

The current production area currently exceeds one lakh square feet, with the potential to add a similar-sized unit within a few months’ notice. Space constraints are not expected to hinder future expansion.
Standardized operations with local adaptations
Initially, the Chennai facility has replicated the machinery and product lines of TCPL’s other carton plants, maintaining the company’s standardized factory model. Over time, investments will be made to cater to specific local industry needs.
Akshay Kanoria said that previously TCPL Packaging was unable to seamlessly serve its customers’ southern operations. As such, TCPL’s Chennai facility enhances its role as a strategic partner. The expansion has also generated interest from new customers in the region, strengthening the company’s market presence, he added.
TCPL continues to diversify its product range, recently entering the pizza box packaging segment. "The technology required aligns with our expertise in folding cartons. Partnering with VENTiT has enabled this move without additional manufacturing investment," Akshay Kanoria notes. In the near term, the Chennai plant will produce ventilated pizza boxes, with machinery already in place and production set to soon commence. He adds that while TCPL has yet to introduce rigid box production, it remains a long-term goal.
Optimistic about Indian growth

Saket Kanoria remains optimistic about India’s packaging industry despite global economic volatility. With inflation, fluctuating commodity prices, and geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains, he outlines TCPL’s strategies for navigating these challenges.
While India's economy remains resilient, Kanoria acknowledges an evolving demand pattern in the packaging sector. “The growth rate has moderated from double digits to low single digits. Supply chain capacity is expanding faster, adding pressure,” he notes. However, despite inflationary pressures in agricultural commodity industries, overall consumer spending remains stable, with adjusted purchasing patterns.
Chennai plant – a gateway for exports
TCPL’s Chennai plant, located near the port, is well-placed to drive exports, including to Southeast Asia. “Shipping to Southeast Asia from Chennai is comparable in distance, time and cost to intra-SE Asian shipping, giving us a competitive edge,” Saket Kanoria notes.
While Southeast Asian manufacturers benefit from ASEAN trade bloc policies, Saket Kanoria asserts that India’s packaging industry remains competitive due to its broader product offerings. “The Indian sector is on a par with Southeast Asia in scale, although they export more. Their labor policies have historically provided an advantage, but India is catching up.”
Sectoral growth and strategic positioning
TCPL’s diverse client base across multiple industries has provided a buffer against sectoral downturns. “Some sectors perform well while others slow down, ensuring balanced growth. For instance, the liquor sector’s decartonization posed challenges, but demand from other industries offset its impact,” Akshay Kanoria says.
As India positions itself as a global manufacturing hub, TCPL remains focused on both domestic and export markets. “If India’s exports grow, we will actively participate. Our current export business is stable, and any manufacturing shift of end-user industries like electronics, textiles, toys, leather products, and others to India would be an advantage,” he adds.
On global trade dynamics, Akshay Kanoria remains pragmatic. “Shifting tariff structures create uncertainty, but protectionist policies have historically failed. Many importing nations, including the US, lack domestic capacity for specific products, ensuring long-term demand for cost-efficient suppliers like India.”

I looooove libby. Shout out to TCPL for being based as always
"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

Plastic Container Manufacturers in India [Top Manufacturers]
The amount of plastic consumed every year is gradually increasing. Low density, strength, user-friendly design, manufacturability, extended life, low weight and low cost are all features that contribute to its rapid growth. Plastics are also considered lighter than other packing materials by consumers.
In the 1960s plastics overtook many other materials such as wood, cardboard and glass in packaging. In the 1970s plastics replaced many lighter alloys and metals and in the 1980s plastic production expanded and diversified and became one of the top industries in the world. The use of plastic products has increased dramatically in recent years, with many new businesses entering the industry and a greater variety of plastics being produced. Okay but I might actually take advantage of this once TCPL opens up again.. I always feel like such a bother asking for things but I guess if you want teen engagement….
Librarians of tumblr- do these potential things sound semifeasable for a library? (My library is pretty big and well funded- upstate new york if it makes a difference)
-build little free libraries? I want to make my own but I don’t have the skills or resources. Would I be able to do that?
-would they let me/help me make posters to advertise my favourite books/series? And put them around in the library?
-video essay watching as a group, and discussion? (I love like contrapoints and philosophy tube but I never have anyone to talk to about them! And I feel like that limits my experience slightly.)
I have so many ideas that almost have words to describe them but not quite yet I had no idea you guys wanted us to help you design programs
You guys are like the sweetest people thank you for what you do!
On a side note- do libraries take book/resource requests? I’m learning Irish but I’m in upstate new york so basically my only resource is duolingo and I’m told it’s flawed.
about to drop literally the sickest insider knowledge you will ever receive pls use it responsibly:
are you a teenager? do you wish you had the space & resources & organization to do a thing, whether that's an anime club or a movie night or a big craft workshop or creative writing group or literally whatever? would you like to do your thing totally for free? yes?
okay, then bring it up to a librarian
seriously, teenagers are the absolute hardest group to engage at most libraries & we'll often organize programs that absolutely no one will show up to & it sucks. if you go up to a public librarian & say "hey, some friends & i want to do this thing. does that sound like a feasible teen program for the library?" most people will move heaven & earth to pull it off for you because we know there's an interest in our community. we will go balls to the freaking wall to make it happen
do you want a cosplay contest? a video game tournament? a free escape room? bring it up to the library. it's not a burden or an annoyance at all. it'll be like christmas came early for us

Review: What You Are Looking For Is in the Library

“What are you looking for?”
This is the question that the seemingly mystical librarian Sayuri Komachi poses to five very different people who are all, in some way, lost.
Michiko Aoyama’s 2020 novel, What You Are Looking For Is in the Library, traces the stories of five ordinary people in modern-day Tokyo, all of whom are searching for something. These characters lead very different lives, but they are all drawn to a small library located in the community center of their Tokyo Suburb. There, they meet the fearsome, unmoving librarian of the community center: Ms. Komachi, who resembles a fairy-tale witch characteristic of a Studio Ghibli movie. Whether it is a magazine editor struggling to balance motherhood and work, a disillusioned art major, or a newly retired cookie factory worker, each character comes to the library and leaves with a book recommendation (and a felted trinket, courtesy of Ms. Komachi) that will change their lives forever.
Translated from the original Japanese by Alison Watts, this is the first of Aoyama’s many celebrated novels available to English readers. Aoyama’s distinct voice shines through the five chapters, manifesting in a light and comfortable tone, resembling a conversation with your best friend. These characters are smart and snappy; they tell it like it is, a welcome diversion from the flowery, descriptor-heavy prose I’m used to reading.
Don’t be deceived by the casual atmosphere, though. This book explores the intricacies of life and dreams with such tender care that you’ll be taken aback. I certainly was—at the sheer empathy that is steeped in these pages. This book slips you into its characters’ minds and dreams effortlessly. It’s easy to become invested in these characters’ lives. My heart ached for their troubles and pined for their happiness—whether that was for Tomoka, a young retail worker, to get unstuck in life, or for Ryo, an anxious accountant, to work up the courage to pursue his love for antiques—and when each character’s story ended and the next began, it was as if I were saying goodbye to an old friend.
The beauty of these five stories is how ordinary they are. These people are not superheroes; they’re not saving the world (at least in the conventional sense). They are office workers and comic book fans and mothers and fathers. There’s something beautiful about the familiarity of these characters’ lives. Real life is not always an exciting adventure, but this book shows how even the most ordinary of days can become meaningful in their own ways. Aoyama has created an ode to the beauty of the little things, like how only a reader can understand how these five characters, complete strangers, can lead lives that are linked in many unexpected ways.
Still, Aoyama’s characters are far from ordinary. Faced with the hardships of ordinary life, they are just like the rest of us—they get stuck, unmotivated, uninspired. But they keep going. They are empathetic and communicative. They never stop thinking and searching, and eventually, they are led to the library, and something resembling inner peace. My personal favorites of the five were the first story, about a young retail worker who finds joy and motivation through baking castella (cake) from a children's picture book; and the last one, about a retired elderly man who finds new purpose through his daughter and a book of poetry. It's hard to put into words how these stories make you feel. Rewarded? Triumphant? Inspired? All of the above.
I believe that these characters represent the best qualities in all of us. Maybe we all have the potential for a happy ending, if only we look in the right places. Like a library.

TCPL gets into rigid boxes after acquiring Creative Offset
TCPL Packaging acquired a 60% stake in Creative Offset in 2021, and the balance 40% in late 2023. In these years, it has modernized the Noida plant and brought it into its overall orbit. Now known as Creatives, the plant marks the group’s diversification into new markets and segments such as rigid and luxury boxes for mobile phones, smartwatches, wearables, and specialty gift packaging segments.

Several post-press and finishing machines have been moved to Noida from TCPL plants in Haridwar, including a Bobst die cutter, a Robus folder-gluer, and the Sakurai screen printing machine. In addition, a new Komori 6-color plus coater with UV and IR curing was recently installed and duly inaugurated on 31 January 2024. The new press has a maximum sheet size of 750 mm x 1050 mm and is rated at a maximum speed of 16,500 impressions an hour. Khanna said, “It’s a new relationship for TCPL with Komori,” implying that much depends on the performance of the new press.
The company has the whole printing and packaging solutions in-house at the plant in Greater Noida. During our visit to the plant, Shubham Vashisth, Creatives’ assistant manager of maintenance, took us through the whole plant, showcasing its monocarton, corrugated, and rigid box-making capabilities. The complete in-house setup from prepress to finishing and despatch starts with the prepress including the Kodak CtP, printing, corrugation, lamination, die-cutting, foldergluer, and window pasting sections, till the final cartons and boxes are dispatched.
According to Vashisth, the Sakurai screen printing machine is currently one of the busiest – as its finishing effects are in great demand. The rigid box-making section was also buzzing during our visit, continuously making luxury boxes with magnetic closures. Among the new additions in this section are the three Zhongke automatic rigid box-making lines and the magnetic closure machine, which have increased the capacity of this section with the earlier Pinchuang automatic rigid box-making machine. He says that all the carton printing, converting and finishing processes at the plant have moved towards automation after the TCPL acquisition and investments.

Investors shall also pay attention to the financials of a company. This might help investors in their decision-making & also become a bit cautious about certain ratios where the stock might be over-valued.
Let's begin by assessing TATA Capital's Market Cap in comparison to its industry counterparts. With a robust market cap of Rs. 2.34 Lakh Cr., TATA Capital outshines its closest peer, L&T Finance Holding. The company's strong financial performance is evident in its expanding Operating Profit Margin, reaching an impressive 46.01%, 53.07%, and 71.56% in FY21, FY22, and FY23, respectively. The Net Profit Ratio follows a similar upward trajectory, standing at 42.85% and 55.62% over the last two years.
Additionally, TATA Capital exhibits a positive trend in Returns on Assets (RoA), indicating efficient asset utilization with RoA figures of 1.94 and 2.48 for the corresponding years. Investors will find encouragement in the company's healthy Return on Equity (RoE), recording 15.23% and 19.01% in the same period.
Despite these commendable performances, caution is warranted, especially in considering the Price to Book Value (P/BV) and Price to Earnings (P/E) ratios. TATA Capital's P/BV ratio is notably high at 15.2, approximately 12 times that of its peers, and a staggering 14 times higher than the industry average P/E of 1.5.
