Unshaming my indigenous heritage | Mari Boine
Mari Boine grew up in a Sámi family in the North of Norway, where she was taught to be ashamed of her heritage and the close relation to nature. Growing up she found the opposite to be true, and turned the realisation into a life long musical career. Mari is a singer, musician and songwriter from Sápmi, Norway. Her music is infused with Sami roots (joik) in combination with jazz, rock and electronic sounds. Mari Boine has been one of the most outspoken and important representatives of the Sámi culture. As an artist and activist, she has worked tirelessly for the recognition and preservation of the indigenous Sámi culture and for the protection of Mother Earth among other causes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Richard Reynolds, Environmentalist *www.guerrillagardening.org
Guerrilla Gardening : Why People Garden without Boundaries
"We fight not with guns, but with flowers(우리는 총대신 꽃으로 싸운다)"
When Richard Reynolds planted a flower on unused small plot in the middle of night for the first time in his life, he never expected to be on the forefront of the "Guerrilla Gardening" movement. He had never thought of fighting against the forces that didn't care public spaces and cast a nonchalant look at abandoned corners of ever-sprawling cities. Nor had he dreamed of being at the vanguard of a global movement. But soon he stood at the center of a "silent revolution," as guerrillas around the world raided his blog GuerrilaGardening.org to share their story of flower-planting. There are people standing up against things that make our life dry and dull with small but steady endeavor, concerned experts who find the architecture with no consideration of nature and reckless urban planning sick and tired, and the green troops who wish to lead simple and harmonious life. Richard Reynolds is the seed of consolation and hope for these people.

5 minutes with... TEDxBrighton's Laurence Rickard [x]
8 Oct 2015
TEDxBrighton caught up with this year's host Laurence Rickard. Larry (as he would prefer you all to call him) is a BAFTA-winning comedy writer and actor, probably best known for his work on the hit BBC sketch show Horrible Histories and the Sky 1 fantasy comedy Yonderland.
What are you doing right now?
I'm on a train, which is where I spend a fair proportion of my life. I find I get huge amounts of work done on trains, because I can't procrastinate by making a sandwich or going for a walk... Well, not for a very long walk anyway. Though answering these questions means I'm not doing the re-write that I've promised my producer. If she shouts at me, I'm going to give her your number.
What was your first thought when invited to host this year’s event?
Honestly? I was worried that I'd taken on something I wouldn't have time to do. But then I feel that when I agree to do most things. It'll be fine. I just like to worry.
You’re undoubtedly extremely busy this year with your writing and acting, and also with the release of your first film, Bill. With this in mind, what persuaded you to add this role to your already crammed to do list?
I went to school with Sam, one of the organisers, so he probably has quite a lot of dirt on me. I thought it best not to cross him, in case he had a copy of that demo my band did when I was 15. I wouldn't want that getting out. Also, it's TED, isn't it. It's an institution. I felt very privileged to have been asked.
This year’s conference is about losing control. When was the last time you lost control and why?
Well, I'm five days away from the release of a film right now (it's called Bill and it's in cinemas on September 18th – you should definitely go and see it), so I'm probably running on slightly heightened levels of anxiety and reduced levels of sleep. I'm not sure I'd say I've 'lost control' at any point, but there's been a few moments where I've raised my voice a bit, which is very rare for me. That's a very British answer isn't it? You ask when I lost control and I tell you the last time I raised my voice. Hardly a thundering maelstrom – I don't think it'll make the papers.
TEDx is all about sharing inspiring concepts and ideas. Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?
Probably my drama and English teacher at secondary school. He was always so supportive and encouraging. On reflection he was quite anti-establishment – he would give you a thousand merit points for a piece of writing, which both bolstered your self-confidence and made a complete mockery of the 'merit point' system. That was him all over. I was quite shruggy-shoulders about most of my school life, but I looked forward to his lessons so much. He encouraged me to write and act, and now I write and act – if that's not an inspiration, I don't know what is.
If you were asked to deliver a TED talk, what would you like to talk about and who would you most like to deliver your talk to?
I'd probably talk to young people about the celebration of celebrity. I worry that there's a generation who are, in many ways, being robbed of inspiration, and I don't think that's fair on them. People who, in a world of Geordie Shore and vlogs about making a nice breakfast, think that 'being a celebrity' is a goal to strive towards. Not trying to learn a skill or an art or hone a talent, but wanting to get 'rich and famous' by doing something that, in essence, pretty much anyone could do. You just want them to find that thing – whether it's bricklaying or mastering the violin – that enthuses and inspires them beyond the desire to one day have 2 million Twitter followers. Making sure that the world's best UN Secretary General doesn't end up never existing because they became the next Joey Essex instead.
As a born and bred resident of Brighton and Hove, what do you love most about this city?
I like its size. It's a walkable city. I lived in that London for a bit, and people travel for two hours just to meet up for a beer. That seems mad to me. And I like that Brighton is, on the whole, tolerant, liberal and diverse. I don't like that big spike they've put by the West Pier though. I just don't get it – we are a city of vibrant streets, not striking skylines. The view in one direction will just be roofs, and the other will just be just water. I never really got the thrill of looking at stuff from a bit higher up.
If you could take just one book, film and album on holiday this year, which would you take?
The film please.
What do you think events like TEDx offer to audiences?
Tickets I'd imagine. That would be the model I'd adopt. It's simplest in terms of seating etc. Plus the revenue would help to cover production costs. It's certainly worth looking into.
If you could pick a theme for next year's conference what theme would you most like to explore and why?
Special Effects Techniques in the Original Star Wars Trilogy. It's the only thing I can speak about with any authority.

Why Not?" — A Thought That Might Just Change Everything | Bobby Dsouza's Call to Action
What if two simple words could shift your life’s direction? What if “Why not?” became your mantra for bold decisions, career leaps, and personal breakthroughs?
Bobby Dsouza, a leading motivational speaker in India, believes those words can spark transformation. Drawing from personal experience and deep insights, Bobby has touched thousands with his bold thinking, electrifying talks, and fearless mindset. His motto is not just about dreaming — it's about daring. Daring to try, fail, rise, and lead.
Inspired by Greatness — Fueling the 'Why Not' Mindset
In a recent podcast featuring global superstar Kevin Hart, Bobby heard something that hit hard. Despite being one of the world’s famous motivational speakers, an author, and a blockbuster movie icon, Hart’s simplicity struck a chord. When talking about his second book, Hart asked himself, “Why not? Can’t this book also be a bestseller?”
That single line shattered conventional thinking. And it reminded Bobby of something powerful: greatness doesn’t come from limits — it comes from asking better questions.
Why can’t you be more?
Why not believe in your own potential?
Why not start?
More Than Just Motivation — A Movement
As one of the best motivational speakers in India, Bobby Dsouza does more than speak — he leads a movement. A movement that challenges outdated mindsets, ignites self-belief, and brings people face-to-face with their deeper purpose.
In a world full of distractions and doubts, Bobby brings clarity. He doesn’t just motivate — he activates.
His clients range from large corporates and government organizations to schools, entrepreneurs, and leaders across India. Whether he’s speaking at conferences in Delhi or conducting workshops in Bangalore, his message remains grounded and powerful: “You have more inside you than you believe.”
That’s why he's counted among the best motivational speakers in Delhi and best motivational speakers in Bangalore.
Management Training with Meaning
Bobby isn’t just about inspiration; he's also a powerful management training speaker. His sessions for teams and leadership groups go beyond traditional models. He mixes real stories, music, high-energy interaction, and deep reflection to deliver an unforgettable experience.
His training covers emotional intelligence, team dynamics, communication, personal branding, and productivity. But more than the content, it's his delivery that transforms.
Teams leave his sessions not just better informed, but more connected, inspired, and ready to take bold action.
This Is for the Dreamers, the Doers, and the Disheartened
Bobby’s core message speaks to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re climbing the corporate ladder, navigating your first business, or trying to find yourself — his message is a mirror that reflects your true potential.
Here’s what he says:
To the employee who thinks promotions only come through office politics: Why not be the exception?
To the entrepreneur who failed once (or twice): Why not rise again — stronger and smarter?
To the mom or dad putting off a creative dream: Why not start today?
To the corporate leader hesitating to break the norm: Why not lead boldly?
To the young graduate wondering if it's okay to shift careers: Why not trust your growth?
Becoming the Best Version of Yourself
When people talk about famous motivational speakers India looks up to — names may vary. But those who have heard Bobby Dsouza in action remember his unique ability to connect.
He's not just shouting slogans. He’s lived through struggles — financial crises, self-doubt, and societal pressure. That’s what makes his success relatable. It’s not theory. It’s transformation through fire.
His voice has resonated at TEDx stages, global webinars, multinational companies, and leadership retreats. He brings personal stories, music, failures, and wins into one seamless experience — making him one of the best motivational speakers in India today.
It's More Than a Talk — It's a Trigger
Every time Bobby steps on stage or speaks to an audience, something changes. People stand up straighter. They reflect deeper. They dare to say "Why not?"
That’s because the question Bobby leaves you with isn’t meant to be rhetorical.
It’s meant to be a spark.
A challenge.
An invitation.
To be brave enough to believe in more. To expect more from yourself. And to model that mindset for your family, your team, your community — even your country.
So... Why Not You?
If you’ve been waiting for permission — this is it.
If you’ve been stuck in doubt — Bobby’s message is your reminder.
And if you’ve ever felt like you’re capable of more — it’s time to act on it.
Bobby Dsouza, through every speech, story, and session, urges you to stop settling. Start daring. Ask: Why not?
Because when you do — you change everything.

Merging design and computer science in creative ways
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/merging-design-and-computer-science-in-creative-ways/
Merging design and computer science in creative ways
The speed with which new technologies hit the market is nothing compared to the speed with which talented researchers find creative ways to use them, train them, even turn them into things we can’t live without. One such researcher is MIT MAD Fellow Alexander Htet Kyaw, a graduate student pursuing dual master’s degrees in architectural studies in computation and in electrical engineering and computer science.
Kyaw takes technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and robotics, and combines them with gesture, speech, and object recognition to create human-AI workflows that have the potential to interact with our built environment, change how we shop, design complex structures, and make physical things.
One of his latest innovations is Curator AI, for which he and his MIT graduate student partners took first prize — $26,000 in OpenAI products and cash — at the MIT AI Conference’s AI Build: Generative Voice AI Solutions, a weeklong hackathon at MIT with final presentations held last fall in New York City. Working with Kyaw were Richa Gupta (architecture) and Bradley Bunch, Nidhish Sagar, and Michael Won — all from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
Curator AI is designed to streamline online furniture shopping by providing context-aware product recommendations using AI and AR. The platform uses AR to take the dimensions of a room with locations of windows, doors, and existing furniture. Users can then speak to the software to describe what new furnishings they want, and the system will use a vision-language AI model to search for and display various options that match both the user’s prompts and the room’s visual characteristics.
“Shoppers can choose from the suggested options, visualize products in AR, and use natural language to ask for modifications to the search, making the furniture selection process more intuitive, efficient, and personalized,” Kyaw says. “The problem we’re trying to solve is that most people don’t know where to start when furnishing a room, so we developed Curator AI to provide smart, contextual recommendations based on what your room looks like.” Although Curator AI was developed for furniture shopping, it could be expanded for use in other markets.
Another example of Kyaw’s work is Estimate, a product that he and three other graduate students created during the MIT Sloan Product Tech Conference’s hackathon in March 2024. The focus of that competition was to help small businesses; Kyaw and team decided to base their work on a painting company in Cambridge that employs 10 people. Estimate uses AR and an object-recognition AI technology to take the exact measurements of a room and generate a detailed cost estimate for a renovation and/or paint job. It also leverages generative AI to display images of the room or rooms as they might look like after painting or renovating, and generates an invoice once the project is complete.
The team won that hackathon and $5,000 in cash. Kyaw’s teammates were Guillaume Allegre, May Khine, and Anna Mathy, all of whom graduated from MIT in 2024 with master’s degrees in business analytics.
In April, Kyaw will give a TedX talk at his alma mater, Cornell University, in which he’ll describe Curator AI, Estimate, and other projects that use AI, AR, and robotics to design and build things.
One of these projects is Unlog, for which Kyaw connected AR with gesture recognition to build a software that takes input from the touch of a fingertip on the surface of a material, or even in the air, to map the dimensions of building components. That’s how Unlog — a towering art sculpture made from ash logs that stands on the Cornell campus — came about.
Play video
Gesture Recognition for Feedback-Based Mixed Reality and Robotic Fabrication of the Unlog Tower Video: Alexander Htet Kyaw
Unlog represents the possibility that structures can be built directly from a whole log, rather than having the log travel to a lumber mill to be turned into planks or two-by-fours, then shipped to a wholesaler or retailer. It’s a good representation of Kyaw’s desire to use building materials in a more sustainable way. A paper on this work, “Gestural Recognition for Feedback-Based Mixed Reality Fabrication a Case Study of the UnLog Tower,” was published by Kyaw, Leslie Lok, Lawson Spencer, and Sasa Zivkovic in the Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication, January 2024.
Another system Kyaw developed integrates physics simulation, gesture recognition, and AR to design active bending structures built with bamboo poles. Gesture recognition allows users to manipulate digital bamboo modules in AR, and the physics simulation is integrated to visualize how the bamboo bends and where to attach the bamboo poles in ways that create a stable structure. This work appeared in the Proceedings of the 41st Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe, August 2023, as “Active Bending in Physics-Based Mixed Reality: The Design and Fabrication of a Reconfigurable Modular Bamboo System.”
Kyaw pitched a similar idea using bamboo modules to create deployable structures last year to MITdesignX, an MIT MAD program that selects promising startups and provides coaching and funding to launch them. Kyaw has since founded BendShelters to build the prefabricated, modular bamboo shelters and community spaces for refugees and displaced persons in Myanmar, his home country.
“Where I grew up, in Myanmar, I’ve seen a lot of day-to-day effects of climate change and extreme poverty,” Kyaw says. “There’s a huge refugee crisis in the country, and I want to think about how I can contribute back to my community.”
His work with BendShelters has been recognized by MIT Sandbox, PKG Social Innovation Challenge, and the Amazon Robotics’ Prize for Social Good.
At MIT, Kyaw is collaborating with Professor Neil Gershenfeld, director of the Center for Bits and Atoms, and PhD student Miana Smith to use speech recognition, 3D generative AI, and robotic arms to create a workflow that can build objects in an accessible, on-demand, and sustainable way. Kyaw holds bachelor’s degrees in architecture and computer science from Cornell. Last year, he was awarded an SJA Fellowship from the Steve Jobs Archive, which provides funding for projects at the intersection of technology and the arts.
“I enjoy exploring different kinds of technologies to design and make things,” Kyaw says. “Being part of MAD has made me think about how all my work connects, and helped clarify my intentions. My research vision is to design and develop systems and products that enable natural interactions between humans, machines, and the world around us.”

As we travel through life, everyone you meet is at a different point in their own unique journey. Some of us know where we’re going. While other paths are full of twists, turns, and obstacles thrown in our way. The trick is to embrace the detours and delays. Because there are no shortcuts on a journey of self-discovery or creative expression.
Just please remember: you are not traveling alone.
And we love that our global partner, Adobe, is on this journey with us. Thanks, Adobe!

Houses made of grass | Elora Hardy | TEDxUbud This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Thousands of handmade pegs, 18 meter long poles, bare feet, and hundreds of hands. This is what it takes to make a house designed by Elora Hardy. She’s interested in changing the perception of luxury in relation to scarcity and abundance. Her tool? The super grass that is bamboo.
Raised in Ubud, Elora spent 14 years of her young adult life in the United States, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University and went on to become sole textile and print designer for Donna Karan Intl. In 2010, Elora returned to Bali to carry on the incredible work of the design-build team that created the world-renowned Green School in Bali, founded by her father John Hardy. She reconnected with the culture and landscape that she loves and today continues to cultivate Balinese artisans alongside innovative designers and architects with the goal of making Bali a global center for sustainable design and bringing those designs to the rest of the world.
